Boiler installation
The reviews here are very positive. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. I had an Ideal Icos boiler where the control board had failed having only been replaced 18 months previously. Chris persuaded me to replace the boiler with a Baxi boiler (rather than getting the existing boiler repaired) and assured me that we would not have the same reliability problems with a Baxi boiler. He did not disclose that he only installs Baxi boiler. On installation of the boiler, he specified the size of the boiler based on the existing boiler (30kW). He did not consider the size of the house, the number of radiators or the fact that we had a water softener. From day one, we had problems with the boiler. There was a gas leak. Both Chris and Baxi could not locate the leak. Baxi replaced the combustion unit, but still gas was leaking. After 3 years, the heat exchanger failed. Baxi was called out to replace the heat exchanger. The Baxi engineer was very honest. He explained that the boiler was not suitable for houses like mine. The boiler was having to continuously work at the limit of its capacity to heat our home. The boiler is fitted with an aluminium heat exchanger and that was corroding due to continuous use of the boiler. In spite of the fact that the boiler was only 3 years old, he strongly advised replacing it with a boiler that had a stainless steel heat exchanger. He said that he could replace the heat exchanger, but it is a messy job and it would fail again in 3 years. I took up the case with Baxi head office. They tried to reassure me that their boilers were reliable and they extended the warranty a further 3 years and so I got them to replace the heat exchanger. I also asked them to carry out further checks to locate the source of the gas leak. After over 3 years, they eventually located the leak. One of the pipes had not been properly welded during installation of the boiler. 2 years and 11 months later, the heat exchanger failed again. I emailed Chris asking why the boiler was repeatedly failing. However, all he would say was that he had not had issues with the heat exchanger on other boiler installations and that it was a matter for Baxi. I tried ringing him on a number of occasions to discuss the issue, but he would not return my calls. On a positive note, Chris and Shane are pleasant to deal with. However, my experience is that they don’t want to take responsibility for their failings in the problems with my boiler and the fact that they did not carry out a proper assessment to determine whether the boiler would be suitable for our home. For others out there, it is also worth understanding that they only install Baxi boilers so you need to ensure that the Baxi boiler will meet your requirements. Baxi do not do heat only boilers with stainless steel heat exchangers so there are limitations in the performance of their boilers.
