Go Iceland? Perhaps not the best choice

All in all, the car was fine and we didn't experience any problem. But the car already had 140.000 kms, the navigation system was not updated and the key battery was very low, so that it was always a struggle to remotely open and close the car. Could have been better.

This company can not be trusted. Avoid them at all costs

I rented a camper van from Go Iceland for 8 days for an Iceland trip in June 2016.

The vehicle was a 2016 Renault Kangoo diesel and the vehicle was excellent. Iceland is beautiful and the hiking was some of the worlds best.

I highly recommend Iceland as a destination

But NEVER rent from this company

After an uneventful rental experience, I returned the vehicle to the Keflavik rental office to catch my flight back to Canada.

This is where the con job started. They told me they found "damage" to the vehicle and proceed to charge me equivalent of CAD$1300 for a "contour irregularity" in the door. I searched up close and could barely see something when the light shone at just the right angle. I didn't use the word "dent" because that would imply that you could see it.

interestingly this contour is also present in the photos I took when I rented the vehicle

When I resisted they continued to reassure me that I would be reimbursed by my credit card insurance. They told me I had returned a damaged vehicle that required the door to be removed and repainted

After reading other reviews I have learned that this is a common practice for this company. They know you have plane to catch. They know that nobody could ever notice this "contour" in the pre-rental examination.

This is a crooked practice where Go Iceland is making significant revenue through this dishonest practice. They justify it by reassuring the customer that the credit card insurance wil reimburse them

This practice borders on criminal and they should be investigated by local police, as well as tourism and business bureaus

AVOID GO ICELAND

Service minded

We're very happy with our trip to Iceland. The car we used was cheap and didn't have a single problem. Even though we messed up a bit with the return date the staff took great care of us and solved it all when we needed help. We are extremely satisfied with this car service and we'll make sure to use it again next time.

Cant wait to go back!

I recently spent 2 weeks in Iceland and rented a Suzuki Jimny from Go Iceland cars at a very reasonable price. From day 1 their costumer service was a treat, the guy who picked me up from the Hostel friendly and on time, also very comprehensive with telling me about the car and driving in Iceland. Eleanor at the office was lovely - communicating via email the next day when there was a hiccup with the card machine. I had an amazing time in Iceland which ended unfortunately in the worst way. I had an accident with the car which involved it rolling over off road. Everyone involved was superb, I was told to "don't worry, make sure you are ok first and then we will sort the rest out". Sure enough their agent Hilmar made time to come to me to sort everything out. I do not have much experience renting cars abroad but after what happened, I feel it was lucky I was in their hands. I will definitely be recommending them to family and friends and will be back to see them soon!

Great service, reliable car for a road trip

My girlfriend and I rented a Renault Kangoo Max campervan for 9 days to go around the island. We arrived late at night (2 am local time) and easily found the Go Iceland office thanks to the map we received before departure. The staff was helfpul to hand-over the car and show us all the features. The van soon became our travel companion, showing an excellent condition and reliability even in the most difficult terrains and weather conditions. The equipment included in the price covers all the needs of such road trip and the sleeping compartment was clean and comfortable. If you are looking for a reliable car and helpful staff for your trip to Iceland, I can definitely recommend Go Iceland. Mirko

BEWARE!

Beware of Reykjavik Cars / Go Iceland!

Foolishly I chose to use an unknown car rental company due to the (apparently) lower rental costs.

This was a family trip and we ended up renting a 9-seat meeting minibus. They had sold me Renault Trafic.

The car I was given was an old, unwashed, tank half empty, mistreated Hyundai with 83,000km with an impressive collection of damages, scratches, dents and rust ( see rental condition report).

After 4 thankfully uneventful days, I returned the car at the airport prior to our return flight.

With nobody to attend us at the returns desk, I ended up speaking to the guy washing the cars at the back of the building ( he is also the front desk person)

And then... The big con job.

Being aware that I declined additional insurance beyond third party, they proceeded to inform me that one of the (many many) scratches on the door was not there before and that I would be liable to pay 350,000 ISK ($2,300) Their reasoning being that a) This is Iceland and everything is expensive and b) They would have to paint the entire door ( and conveniently fix the other 28 scratches already present on the car at no expense to the company).

I was in a rush to catch my flight and did not have much time to argue my case. Best I could do was get them to reduce the fee to 150,000 ISK ($1,000); I am currently considering my options, including legal action.

In the meantime, I just wanted to make sure others do not make the same mistake. Sometimes paying a little extra for the well-known, safe (and honest) options definitely pays off.

Reykjavik Cars / Go Iceland - NEVER AGAIN.

THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD WITH A RENTAL CAR COMPANY!! STAY AWAY!

First of all, I rented a car from Reykjavik Rental Cars, which is apparently now Go Iceland rental cars. I say this because I researched good rental companies before my trip and Reykjavik Rental Cars was in the top 5. NOT Go Iceland. I definitely would have picked a different company if I had known this.
When I arrived at the Go Iceland rental office (after walking a quarter of a mile from the airport with heavy suitcases and extreme wind)-there was NO ONE in sight. The office door was wide open, but no employees to be found except one exceptionally rude man cleaning cars in their bay. This man claimed to not know who Go Iceland or Reykjavik Rental Cars was even though he was one of their employees. He refused to help me. I was forced to use my cell phone to make an international call to their customer service and received a very angry response that they would be their shortly. After waiting an hour, they finally arrived. This man was nice, but far from apologetic and gave us an old SUV with 200,000 miles on it (2500 of which was past the oil change date) and it was a gas guzzler. This is not the 1 year old Ford Escape economy SUV we were supposed to get/paid for, but they claimed it was all that was available-even though I had called 2 weeks prior to ensure the vehicle we scheduled was still available. The employee showed me where the driver side door had been hastily repaired the day before bc of a broken door hinge and dent. We took the car and began our trip....by day 2, the driver side door would hardly open and a dent began to form at the door hinge. This dent grew as our 10 day trip continued-despite our efforts to be extremely careful with the doors. When we returned the vehicle, they claimed the door had been completely repaired and we must have damaged it ourselves. The employee argued with me for over an hour and a half, putting me at risk of missing my flight so I finally had to leave. They are now trying to charge us $700 for damage that we never caused. Iceland was wonderful and thankfully this was our ONLY bad experience in the entire country, but WOW it was TERRIBLE. Save yourself the time and worry and go anywhere else for a car.

The worst experience of my life

If you are considering renting a car from Go Iceland I urge you to read this first!! A group of friends and I rented a car from Go Iceland three weeks ago for our one week trip to Iceland. When we arrived at the car rental company they did not have the car we originally rented and they gave us a different one; the important thing is that we all fit in the car so we took it without complaints. On the third day of our trip our car broke down near the Glacier Lagoon, it completely stopped working. Thankfully, we were near a information center that was about to close and they let us use their phone to call Go Iceland’s 24 hour emergency number. It took more than three tries to get someone to answer the phone, and when they did they were very rude and kept telling us to jump the car. Jumping the car didn’t work (we tried it several times). I continued to call them as the employees in the store waited on us so they themselves could go home. The man on the phone continued to say we needed to jump the car because he "knew" that car (admitting he gave us a car with problems). We continued to explain to him that it was not working, that we didn’t have a phone, and the center was closing and we were not going to be able to use their phone anymore. We told him we needed a tow truck or some form of help since it was pitch dark out and the temperature was dropping very quickly. He hung up the phone saying he needed to talk to someone and we never heard back from them. We had to use our cell phones to make an international call to our bed and breakfast host for help. Thankfully our bed and breakfast host was so nice that he drove TWO HOURS to pick us up, take us to drop the car keys off at a mechanic, and then take us to the bed and breakfast. The day after, we called from the bed and breakfast to check on our vehicle and no one picked up the phone. We called three different lines and nothing; not even the “emergency line” was answered. Our host, again, drove us to get the keys from the mechanic who had repaired the car so we could move on. We gave our host gas money for his trouble (and gas in Iceland is not cheap). Two days after that, we got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. When we inspected the tire we discovered it had a very poor patch job on it that had come off; it had a gaping hole in a tire thick enough meant for an SUV. After all this ordeal, we contacted them by email telling them the day and time we were going to be at their office to return the car and talk about our situation. When we got to their office there was no one there. We had to borrow a phone from a near by shop to call them, and they instructed us to just leave the car at the airport’s parking lot; clearly avoiding having to meet with us face to face. Three weeks after the event we are still sending emails trying to get our money back from the days wasted, the extra gas spent on our host, and the international calls; or at the very least an apology. No answers! Please DO NOT RENT from this company. They do not care for their cars or their customers!! Yes, they are cheaper than other places, but ultimately you get what you pay for.

Servicio mejorable

We rented a car in September 2014. The car worked properly. However,it was an old car. The attention was defficient. The timetable was clearly inssuficient (from 9 till 18). We arrived at 19 and we waited one hour until someone arrive (after call them because there was nobody at the office). Furthermore, the office was suposed to be at the airport but it was 4km far from the airport.
We don't recomend it, I would rather prefer pay more and get a better service.

Bad experience, old car, insurance for nothing

I've rented a 4x4 this summer.

First they don't have office in the airport. I rented a 4x4 that looks new in the web. The reality was and old 4x4, that spend a lot o fuel (and there the fuel is expensive), and the license plate was lost. I'm sure it was loose and in some gravel road ...

I had to pay the license plate :-( if not they don't take me back to the airport

Great car, good service at a very reasonable price!

We rented a nice Nissan Qashgai 4WD from Go Iceland earlier this month and had a great time.
We were picked up from the airport just 5 minutes after we called the Go Iceland office.
The car was only 8 months old and took us across Iceland in 9 days (lots of gravel roads).
Great car, good service at a very reasonable price!
Next time we will rent a car from Go Iceland again!
