Exceptional

Stayed in Leven, fife for the night to visit family. What a wonderful 1st of many stays at The Caledonian hotel. Service with a smile, catering was fabulous, room was well worth the money and even then it wasn't as expensive as other hotel chains. Comfortable beds, bathroom was huge, and TV working. WiFi connection was straight forward and best of all the restaurant is directly underneath the rooms, so no need to walk outside in the rain for dinner. Will definitely stay again.

Disappointing Customer Service…

Disappointing Customer Service Experience with Greene King App at Rothley Court Leicester

I had a very frustrating experience with Greene King due to issues with their app and poor customer service.

I placed a drink order through the Greene King app and waited 45 minutes, but nothing arrived. Eventually, I went to queue at the bar for another 20 minutes, only to be told that “the app probably isn’t working.” Despite showing proof of payment, I was not given the drinks I had paid for. The bar staff said I’d need to wait up to 7 days for a refund from head office, and if it didn’t arrive, I’d have to chase it up myself.

This left me feeling anxious that I’d have no proof I didn’t receive my drinks. Even though I had clear evidence of payment, they still wouldn’t fulfill the order or offer an immediate resolution.

I contacted head office, and after 6 days, they finally agreed to process a refund – which will now take an additional 3 to 5 working days to reach me.

The entire experience was ridiculous and unacceptable. Poor communication, no accountability at the venue, and a refund process that puts all the burden on the customer. I expected better from a national chain like Greene King.

Beware when you stay at Greene King Hotels

Beware when you stay at Greene King hotels to check your credit card bill when it arrives!
I stayed at the *ock Hotel in Stoney Stratford in December 2024 and on receiving my credit card bill in January 2025 found they had added food to my bill after check out. No-one contacted me to inform me that they were doing this even though it was an error on their part.
After protracted e mails with the manager he reversed the charges and even offered a £20 Greene King gift card as an apology. Of course this NEVER arrived!
I have stayed at several Greene King establishments over the years and some have been diabolical (eg Scunthorpe). But also some have been fantastic (eg Masham), though I see this establishment is now part of the Chef & Brewer brand!

Great place to stay in Fareham

Arrived at Red Lion Hotel later than expected, very friendly staff. Room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. As an old building it does not have the facilities of a new building. But if you are just using the room as a bedroom it it ideal. The bathroom was clean and easy to use. I have never slept in a hotel as well as I did here, that is such a bonus for me.

Attended a family Wedding on the 12th October 2024.
The Wedding was amazing apart from the food which came out under cooked.
I took the raw burger to bar and asked the bar attendant to make sure the manager was made as
Lots of other guest had the same problem. I was really worried that the bride would find out and ruin her day,
I later found out that even her food was raw, and she didn’t eat it in case it made her ill on her honeymoon.
Unfortunately I was ill the following day.
I emailed The Ock hotel and green king advising them and when the bride returned from honeymoon she tried to speak to someone as the food was not cheap.
To this day no one from the ockHotel or green king has contacted me to try and put this right.
If you are a couple looking for a wedding venue stay clear of this place they are happy to take your money but are dreadful at deal with complaints. The customer service is non-existent ,
The ock Hotel Stony Stratford Milton Keynes
I am going to go on every social media platform to let everyone know how bad you customer service is.

Glad we only stayed one night!

Stayed at The Weathervave Hotel, Stoke on Trent, recently. Staff friendly and mainly helpful. Check in fine. Room and bathroom not so good. Tired and unloved. Badly in need of a makeover! So glad we only stayed one night. I took pictures of the grubby curtain, bath edges, scratched furniture and split bathroom flooring, but no opportunity to share them here!

Great room, poor service

Booked a two night stay at The new inn, Newport. I had emailed the company to ask that our two rooms be close together but obviously they did not get the email as our two rooms were on different floors. The rooms were perfect, warm, clean and just what we needed to get ready for the wedding we were attending on the second day. The first evening was perfect we attended the on-site restaurant and the food and service was excellent. We returned to our rooms to watch some tv before getting a good night of sleep. We woke early to begin getting ready for our day before breakfast. When I booked the information said breakfast was between 7am and 11am but on arrival we were told it was 8am till 10am. On the wedding day breakfast was not even ready at 8am. No-one came to take our order so I went to the bar to ask and was told to sit down and someone will come to take the order. There were no hot drinks ready either so when our breakfast came we ate it and left, as we had to get my daughter to the brides hotel for her hair and make-up to be done. We were asked if breakfast was ok but did not have time to explain our frustration so did not say anything. I can only say the offering would not have filled up a sparrow and did not look anything like the advertised pictures. After a beautiful wedding we returned to the room and slept so well we didn't wake until 9am. We rushed to get down for breakfast and sat for approximately 10 minutes before anyone came to ask if we had ordered. We placed our order and waited again for a poor offering, 2 strips of streaky bacon, 1 tiny sausage, dried up mushrooms, a tablespoon of baked beans, no black pudding as advertised, but there was a perfect hash brown and fried egg so well done for that! My mother in law asked for 2 sausages to put on a sandwich, which they mistook for extra sausages on a breakfast. My husband then had to go without sausage so my mother in law could have her breakfast (without the bread as it had been cleared away. They said they would cook him a sausage but we had eaten our breakfast and left before it came. By the time we were served our breakfast the staff had cleared all the other breakfast items away so we were unable to have a hot drink or toast with our breakfast. To be honest the customer service was very poor and the breakfast was certainly not worth the price. Sadly I don't think we will be returning to this venue.

Hucknall

Hucknall, Nottingham
Would not recommend this hotel,
stayed in room 19 above the reception was
kept awake by rowdy crowd outside,
reported this to the hotel, 2 police cars were called
in to remove these people, did not get to
sleep till 12:45am, could not close windows
because they are faulty (would not close)
will be asking for compensation as we did
not get a decent night's sleep.
Maintenance not being done in the rooms, felt unclean while staying here, photos taken to show how bad it is.

Golf pub Ipswich: inedible food; poor customer service

I visited our local pub, The Golf, with my husband, son and my son's girlfriend from the United States. We did not want to travel far this evening (29.5.22) and thought we would stay local and have a simple meal. I thought as it was a Greene King Inn it would be fine, as I have to eat Gluten-free food. I have eaten at two or three Greene King Inns before - out of Ipswich, and also In Ipswich, and there had always been a good selection of food I could eat. I have never been unhappy before. But two out of three meals were inedible! There was only one thing I remotely wanted on a very limited menu for Gluten free. It was either salad, ham egg and chips, Tomato soup or Hunter's chicken (or sandwiches with a choice of two fillings. I chose Hunter's chicken as it was the only thing resembling an evening meal. My chicken was full of skin and fat and had been cooked hard in the microwave. The sale tasted like it had dirt on it and was wilting. My coleslaw was a pile of red onion with mayonnaise added to it. My husband had a steak with a lot of fat, frozen chips and undercooked onion rings from a cheap supermarket. My son got lucky with his fried chicken, but his GF had macaroni cheese which was a pile of stodge re heated. She was far too polite to complain but ate nothing. I did complain, but first the waitress went to tell the 'chef' (frankly I could be a chef where I simply pinged something in a microwave) then questioned my guest, and came back to say the chef was happy to refund the Hunter's chicken but that was all, as my guest said she didn't feel well (the waitress said this with some self-satified smirk). She also said that it was Greene King's policy to re-heat all food in a microwave. This hasn't been my experience before, but is it is the case that they now serve sub-standard food I won't be eating there again. As for Gluten-free - my stomach is 'on fire' so I suggest it was not Gluten free after all. I did expect a full refund for the ruined evening and the poor and rude customer service. If a customer complains (and suffers illness afterwards) it should be without question. I can no longer visit my local pub, it just isn't good enough for me, and I am very disappointed, Greene King. I did not expect The Ivy, but I do expect my food to be cooked and edible.

An edit: as an update, this experience is slightly negated by the fact that Greene King have now refunded me the full price and some compensation, which restores a little faith in the brand, as I have not had a bad experience in the other Greene King inns before.

A further edit: I did get the refund, but despite contact ing them twice more, I did not get the vouchers in compensation I was promised. So much for customer service! I haven't been there since and I won't go again.

White Hart Hotel in Braintree

White Hart Hotel in Braintree. Was given a dog-friendly "family" room which was incredibly small. One double bed with a pull-out couch for a second bed. The carpet had stains all over it, the bathroom was tiny and falling apart, not to mention poorly cleaned. There was no bath, only a shower cubicle which was tucked behind a half-wall and really dark. The toilet had been used, and not flushed. The carpet was covered in stains, and one of them looked like cat sick. The room was sitting right above a noisy generator which was shaking the room, and was so loud it immediately triggered my tinnitus. There was no way we'd get any sleep in there. That was Room 26. We then asked politely if they'd consider letting us move rooms. We were then moved to a non-family-sized room (Room 8) which was at the opposite end of the hotel, by the high street. We were woken in the early hours by drunk people shouting right outside the window. There was a rather large radiator in the bedroom, right next to the bed, set on a high heat which we struggled to turn down, so we roasted for the first night. I had a terrible night's sleep. There was no air conditioning and you could not open the window, as the external one was a sash window and had had the lift-handles removed. The internal window had had the latches removed, and also couldn't be opened. There was an awful lot of noise coming from the function rooms which were directly next door and below the second room we occupied, and during the night we could hear doors constantly slamming as none of them were fitted with soft-close apparatus like you see in most hotels. The room itself was falling apart - large cracks in the plaster, poorly painted, poorly joined coving with massive gaps, stained carpet, inch-thick dust everywhere and a dilapidated bathroom. The fixtures and fittings were incredibly old and poorly kept, the shower curtain wasn't clean (it wasn't a glass screen, it was fabric and had not been washed), the grout had black mould all over the place (which they had painted over), there were water stains on the floor that had not been cleaned since the previous occupant, and the shower curtain railing was for a corner bath, but had been installed over a straight bath so you had the wet thing stuck to your ass throughout your shower.
The restaurant booking app wasn't working properly and so we couldn't book our meals. The first night we were accommodated on arrival but the second night, they said they were fully booked so we had to eat a takeaway in our room. The food in the restaurant was a little bit grim, (some of it pre-cooked and reheated, my best guess) and I couldn't finish anything they served. Took 40 minutes to get two desserts, and they forgot to take our room discount off one of our meal bills. There were very few non-alcoholic options other than Coke-brand soda. The breakfasts were better, but most of it contained bread which I can't eat, and they were out of stock both days on the only thing I wanted. The "continental selection" is only put out once on a small stack of shelves, and it was all gone by 9am. Couldn't get proper coffee from the bar, only what came out of the heated decanters, which wasn't the best. Tolerable. The only thing giving them any stars at all is that the staff were so good with my dog. But I definitely won't be staying or dining here again I'm afraid.

The Bowman, Hucknall Overnight Stay

We booked a night away at the above Green King Inn back in October.

Unfortunately my partner had to have a small operation, that we subsequently found out about after we had booked the above, the operation was scheduled for last Thursday, with us staying away on Saturday. Unfortunately the operation was rescheduled due to a Covid outbreak in the hospital, meaning that we were unable to take the room up as she had to self isolate.

We contact Green King immediately to try and reschedule the room Friday, but were told to contact the manager on Saturday, so I sent an email instead. When making the booking I had mistakenly forgotten to tick the box for re-scheduling or refund.

As a lesson to all, Greene King are now refusing to reschedule our date even though circumstances were beyond our control and Covid related. We have offered them the evidence, but unfortunately they simply don't want to know. We haven't requested a refund, all we were asking is if they could reschedule the room date for the new year and now refusing to do so.

Take heed whilst you find the room rates attractive, you will need to add on the above costs to ensure you can reschedule given the current pandemic.
