Awful.Warm wine (white) cold food not fresh probably pre cooked and reheated, dogs in dining areas, love dogs but don’t want to eat next to them on your anniversary when you’re all dressed up. No real care, it’s expensive and our food was average . Not a great experience . Won’t be returning . Staff are unmotivated and surly .

Lovely experience

My daughter, 2 grandchildren & I had a meal at the Groes Inn last week. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was very tasty & the service we received from Naomi & Tom was excellent. Our 2 dogs had a chilled time there too! Thank you.

Just average

Although the place itself is beautiful and the staff friendly and helpful, unfortunately the food was just average. It was lovely and hot but just nothing out of the ordinary and the awful background music didn't do anything to enhance the experience! We visited last year and couldn't fault it so it's a shame, but we won't be rushing back sadly.

Poor quality food

Four if us had booked a table for evening meal at 1900 on a Sunday. Unfortunately, the quality of the food was not brilliant. One roast beef dinner was returned because the kitchen had run out of roast potatoes (early evening on a Sunday!) and, without any consultation, substituted mashed potato, also the sliced beef was dry, curled up at the edges and the Yorkshire pudding was rock hard! The management did change the meal for another and did not charge us for this but it's a worry the original meal was allowed to leave the kitchen in the first place. The alternate choice of steak and ale pie, which two others in the party also ordered, was a bit average, being slices taken from a larger pie and clearly re-heated. All in all a disappointing experience.

Just so slow service

A lovely setting. We booked for 19:00 but arrived 10 minutes early. We were shown to our table but then waited 40 minutes to order our drinks. The rest of the meal, which in all honesty was ok rather than excellent, followed the same pattern. We finally got and paid the bill 2 hours and 5 minutes after we arrived. The staff were very nice but too few of them and rushed off their feet.

Booked a table for five

Booked a table for five. Mother's Day meal. Very busy, & the staff were very polite & courteous. We ordered drinks, which took a while to arrive, & placed our meal orders. Two of us had prawn cocktail starters, which were, to be fair, full of prawns & sauce, but no salad apart from a tiny leaf of lettuce which was buried at the bottom of the glass. The other starters were good. The main meals were hot & plenty of meat, veg & gravy, but my roast beef was quite thickly sliced, had a lot of fat in it & was extremely tough & chewy. I wish I'd had the lamb shank as someone else had, & it fell off the bone. We ordered extra drinks, which never came, so had to chase them up after half an hour. They only brought them out when we added another drink to the order. Our suite order had gone astray apparently. We waited 45 minutes for them to be brought out, & that was only after adding another suite to the order. They brought that out straight away, & we had to tell them we'd still not had the original four on our order. In all, we were there for 3 hours, & although we had a nice time, it could have been better. The staff were very apologetic & we could see they were rushed off their feet at times.

My 60th

I had always had fond memories of the Groes the history the great food and having a surprise graduation meal with my family. So it was my first choice. I booked it well in advance for the 6th of March and specified my birthday. When we arrived the staff seened unaware of my booking.Despite I had days earlier confirmed the table was next to the bar as my father was 91 and had mobility issues.
We were rushed to a different table (despite my table being free) unplanned un set. I had to go to the bar twice to get someone to come to the table, both to order and get drinks. The menu choice was poor and the food disappointing. In all it took an hour and 15 minutes to get food to the table .This was a quiet Thursday evening .I felt very let down The people who now own the Groes do not appear to care for their reputation or their customers. Such a disappointment on such a significant day.

Hit and Miss

My wife and I, together with our Welsh sheepdog , stayed at the Groes Inn at the end of August this year. The room was really excellent with an outside private terrace which we all enjoyed.
Sadly the same could not be said for the evening meal with a large ( over an inch in size) black strange looking area on my wife’s potatoes and my gammon was so salty as to be inedible. We cancelled our reservation for our second evening. This was really Disappointing because breakfast was well cooked.
Dogs , quite understandingly, are kept to one area of the pub but, unfortunately, all customers have to wait to be seated in this area which is a problem if they are queueing up to be booked in and their dogs are nervous.
There is no garden the pub although it has a huge paved outside eating area which is not dog friendly.
Access to walks is across a very fast B road.
There are other more dog friendly places to stay in the area.

Sadly - poor service today

Sadly, the service today was dire. The two waiting staff seemed overwhelmed by what seemed not very many diners. At one point, there was no-one to be found anywhere, while we searched for someone to produce a soup starter that had been ordered, but not delivered. It was over an hour for main courses to be delivered. Food was good, but poor service was very disappointing. No sign of any management resource.

Awful Fish & Chip meals

My Husband and myself both ordered Fish and Chips. I am sorry to say that it was the worst Fish and Chip meal we have ever had. There was next to no fish and the batter was rock hard, so hard that it broke one of my teeth!
I was really disappointed as I was celebrating my birthday.

Hidden Gem

This is a beautiful old pub and we had the nicest meal and service to boot.
We both had the blackened chicken burger, chips and home made coleslaw. It was amazing.
We will definitely be back

We searched the area for an establishment that could cater for a large birthday lunch to include vegan and vegetarian dishes for guests. The Groes came up trumps and eleven of us had a lovely meal yesterday. The setting with mountain views would be difficult to beat. Great choice of food. Lovely welcoming staff. Topped off with a birthday card from the establishment. What more could you want.

We have stayed at the Groes Inn near…lovely place

We have stayed at the Groes Inn near Conwy for 3 times now, and each time we have been made to feel very welcome. It is very pet friendly, but even if you don't have a dog there are areas and rooms away from dogs and their owners. All the staff are extremely warm and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are warm and comfortable with lovely views and extremely clean. We would definitely recommended the Groes Inn to couples and dog lovers. Even our two rescue dogs loved going back each time. Food is very good to.o For us it is definitely a win win.

A lovely place to dine.

Popped in without a reservation and they were so accommodating. Even though they were really busy managed to fit us in. The food and service was excellent. First class all round.

lunchtime menu

We made a reservation for 12.30, weekday and were shown by a pleasant waitress to a table in the conservatory. The lovely countryside view was partly obscured by a huge vine, and although it was a sunny day we could not eat outside as the seat cushions were soaking wet.

From the menu we chose mussels for starter and lamb shoulder, gammon for main. the gammon was accompanied by chips, fried aggs and battered onion rings. Being on a low cholesterol diet, I asked whether the chips might be exchanged for some other form of potato but was informed not. The fried eggs similarly were a fixture whereas surely poached could have been suggested? However there was nothing else on the menu that interested me so I went ahead.

As we were sharing driving we both had soft drinks while waiting 25 minutes for the starter to come.

The mussels came in a tasty sauce, but were disappointing both in number and quality. About half the mussels contained hard grit which was very unpleasant.

The lamb shank meal was very tasty and well cooked.
The gammon steak was good quality and well cooked but had a wide margin of fat which I could not eat. The chips were plentiful but oily, as were the 2 eggs. I put the onion rings aside.

The poor quality of the mussels and the lack of choice regarding lower fat alternatives spoiled what otherwise was a pleasant meal and hence just 3 stars.

We shall not return and are unable to recommend this restaurant despite its interesting history and pleasant ambience.
