My experience with Hedley Solicitors in Sunderland has been extremely disappointing. We’ve been passed around between various managers, conveyancers, and administrators, with no clear point of contact and very little continuity.
Calls are rarely returned when promised, and on several occasions I was told the solicitor (Leo) would speak to someone “that day,” only to discover days later that nothing had been done. They also insist on using post rather than email, which slows everything down and makes the whole process far more stressful than it needs to be.
Overall, the lack of follow-through, poor communication, and constant handovers between staff have made this an incredibly frustrating experience. I wouldn’t recommend them based on what we’ve had to deal with .
Hedleys&Co were recommended by our bank, and what followed was easily one of the most frustrating and distressing experiences we’ve ever had. We were assigned Kirsty, who—without exaggeration—has been the worst solicitor I have ever encountered. Unprofessional, disinterested, and unfit to carry the title.
From the outset, communication was almost non-existent. Emails were treated like second-class post—if you were lucky to get a response within five days, it was a miracle. We spent weeks chasing updates. Even receiving the welcome pack turned into a saga—we had to drive over an hour to hand-deliver it because we genuinely didn’t trust that they’d received or actioned it. That’s how little faith we had in their processes.
Kirsty rarely, if ever, responded to messages through the bank’s conveyancing portal, and when she did, it was after significant delays. There was zero transparency, no initiative, no clarity—just an exhausting slog through what should have been a manageable process. We ended up having to escalate a formal concern to our bank and later submitted a detailed complaint directly to the company partner, laying out a timeline of issues. It was only after this complaint that things started moving, which is both telling and disgraceful.
What’s worse? When we visited the office to hand over the contracts—again, physically, just to be sure—Kirsty showed up, didn’t say hello, didn’t acknowledge the inconvenience or the issues, didn’t apologise. She looked utterly disinterested. No ownership, no remorse, no professionalism.
A stressful process was made immeasurably worse by Kirsty’s appalling conduct and the firm’s sheer lack of urgency, empathy, or competence. It was a constant battle to get even the most basic communication.
This review is not written lightly—it is based entirely on our direct experience. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, and I sincerely hope our bank stops recommending Hedleys&Co. For anyone considering them: don’t. Save yourself the distress and go elsewhere. This firm is not worth your money, your time, or your peace of mind
Leo Johnson is the rudest man I have ever came across in my life, he just wants your money his business wants closing down. The girls that work for him he rules with an iron fist. Today is the 29/07/2025 I am still getting documents not completed on my sale that went through on the 28/02/2025
My experience with Hedleys Solicitors was very disappointing. I was assigned to Kirsty, and unfortunately, her service was slow, unresponsive, and lacked basic communication. Reaching her was nearly impossible — she would often ignore calls, and when I left messages with her assistant, I was repeatedly told she would call back, but she never did.
What made this experience even remotely tolerable was her assistant, Beverly. She was consistently patient, polite, and far more helpful than the solicitor herself. If not for Beverly’s professionalism, I wouldn’t even be giving one star.
No comunication considering the probems i had, not good. I even had a phone call saying i was at crown court in the morning as stewart hadnt done my defense statement!
When i look back at my experience it was disgusting the way i was treat with indifference ,april 2023 to 2024
I cannot thank you enough for your expertise and professionalism which ensured a highly satisfactory conclusion to my purchase. Leo Johnson & Ashley Clough was incredible from start to finish, no question was too much trouble and they was able to offer clear and comprehensive guidance and advice at any given time, also was very patient with me as we're the receptionist's. Thank you for you everything. Would highly recommend using again If necessary
Really disappointed in this service. No communication. Felt like I was talking to a computer as they would only answer my email not returned my call but one!
Hadn’t got a clue what was going on had to constantly phone or email to ask what’s happening. Communication is key just a simple email to say it’s in the post would do!
Took months to complete a home purchase with a chain less property.
Caroline was the appointed person to deal with our purchase and was just slow, uninterested and in the long run, costed us additional money. Avoid hedleys solicitors at all costs and especially Caroline
id have given 0 stars if it was possible AVOID
i contacted them around 15 weeks ago to do a simple transfer of equity and was told would take around 34 weeks to complete. ive lost count of the amount of times ive rang them and as always the person dealing with my file is busy on the phone and will call back. called them today mr //// will call you back later did he ?? of course he didn't just like when i called Friday he will call you back and guess what no call back as a law firm you would think they might treat there customers with a bit of respect and want to have repeat business and a good reputation it seems to me because its only a small fee im paying them its the more bigger cash jobs they prioritize or some how manage to complete like when they did my house sale and was a few grand involved take your cash and business to a solicitor who appreciates its customers
I used Hedleys as a conveyancing solicitor for the sale of my house in late 2022, this was on the strength of great service in 2014 when I bought it. Throughout the sale I received poor service, there was no interaction with a solicitor only the assigned apprentice. I had to refuse to pay for indemnities twice which were already in place and sufficient. When asked for feedback at the end I provided a honest account and there wasn't even a response. Honestly a shocking service, they may give a cheap quote but you'll pay for it every second your dealing with them.
Company is a disgrace definitely would not recommend Been five months trying to correct a name on a deed that this company itself mispelt after numerous calls emails getting nowhere getting passed around from reception to secretary to calling back complete waste of time definitely better solicitors out there you should be ashamed of yourselves
