Loving the challenge

Not hub member, (yet). Loving the theory, loving the teaching and practicals. Need to watch all material over as so much to absorb but makes lots of sense to me.

Working with Tom has been a very pleasant opportunity. I would love to join the hub but we are seniors on a fixed income. But if you have the opportunity this will be a great investment for your furever pup.
I did the 2025 Challenge and have been so impressed with the explanations of why these communication are so important.

Make time in your life for Help My Dog!

I have followed Tom and his teachings for years. I feel that he makes dog training accessible for everyone. I am an Expert member of the Hub and practice his method with my challenging, reactive dog. I recommend him to everyone I talk to about dog training. Does he do a lot of self-promoting in his courses? Yes, but I honestly believe that it is because he wants to help people improve their lives with their dogs. I understand, because it works!!!

I am a member of the HMD Hub and have also attended the free 10-day training plan, separation anxiety and Thrive in 2025 5-day challenge with Dr. Tom Mitchell and happily give these all 5 stars! Learning is easy and more fun with Dr. Tom Mitchell and the BehaVet team that also participate. Highly recommend any of the free training and the Hub where even more learning is readily available.

I have just completed the Thrive in 25 challenge. It was free but full of a wealth of helpful games and strategies which I have started to use with my complex little dog. I feel I have hope now, and have been inspired to join the hub to learn more and put it into practice. I loved Dr Tom Mitchell's and Dr Anita's down to earth, real approach, and also their humour but so practical and thought through. I have learned such a lot. Thank you.

An amazing learning resource.

I started with the 10 day plan and it was so good, I joined the Help My Dog Hub, which has been a fantastic resource, with lots of different courses to help whatever struggles you're having with your dog. Very accessible, games based training and I'm seeing results with my three hooligans.

10 day course is basically an advert

I signed up to the 10 day "help my walks are stressful" course. I can't deny that there are some handy tips in there, however it mostly seems to be a rather clever marketing scheme. They use these incredibly well trained dogs to demonstrate reward based training methods. None of which are exactly innovative and once I got to day 7 and he is talking about getting the dog to stand on a bowl to distract it from other dogs I thought this to be ridiculous as just training the dog to stand on a bowl is a whole course in itself but it is taught as if its the most easiest thing in the world! And then if I did eventually manage to get the dog to do that to use it in the street to distract from being reactive to other dogs!? Seriously? I'm not doubting the theory or psychology behind it I'm sure it is sound and that they know what they are talking about. But the practicalities? It was at this point the penny dropped and I realised, aside from the constant referrals to the help my dog hub, they are using these incredibly well trained dogs as subtle advertising to try and get sign ups to their subscription programme by imagining your own dog to be so well trained. Clever psychological techniques. It would be good if they used some untrained dogs to demonstrate how successful their techniques are, it would hold more weight. I'm sure they do get results. If you don't want to sign up you can learn the basic psychology in "Think dog" by john fisher. And there are free videos with the same techniques on you tube, from battersea and rspca etc. I'm not knocking it, I may yet sign up to the help my dog hub. But just beware with this initial course you are paying for one big advert.

Hi Alex, thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a review.

I totally understand the points you are making in your review and also want to thank you for your lovely comments about the efficacy of the techniques and Tom's qualifications etc. It's true that we really do know what we are talking about! Tom is a world-renowned Veterinarian and Behaviourist and he founded the UKs largest online Behaviour clinic - Behavet - where his team help even the most severe of dog behaviour cases via the techniques demonstrated in the videos.

Regarding your point re: the well-trained dogs - in the videos, Tom is training his own dogs who have a range of familiarity with the techniques he is demonstrating. Within Tom's family are dogs of different ages and breeds and in the Stressful Walks programme, he trains a number of different dogs to demonstrate how well the games can work with different breeds and dogs with different skills. They are not all trained on the concepts he is using. However, he is an incredibly skilled behaviourist and, of course, his mechanics and experience can sometimes make the games look easy! He does break the games down step-by-step into manageable chunks for beginners, and he does troubleshoot hurdles that you may face initially. We always encourage repeating the videos twice or three times to get the hang of the games.

The game you reference re: a dog standing on a bowl is actually not so much to do with the bowl itself! The technique is called a 'power-pose' and is a confidence-building mechanism for reactive dogs who react out of fear or anxiety. Per the videos, it is something that needs to be practiced and installed as a tool in your dog's toolbox before taking it out and about. Some of our members (of whom there are over 2,000!) do choose to bring an object out on walks with them, such as a tupperware, a towel or small yoga block (it doesn't have to be a bowl!) but many members choose to use something in the environment instead - such as a log, a rock or even their own feet. So, I totally understand what you are saying about the bowl potentially being impractical, and it's something we make accommodation for.

The 'Help! my Walks are Stressful' 10 Day plan is our entry level course and is currently priced at just £67 for the stressful walks course + 2 other courses on recall and food motivation. So it represents great value for money. We do also have the Hub Membership site which is a monthly or yearly membership and includes all of our standalone courses as well as a training and troubleshooting community. Of course, the library of training and live teaching with Tom will help you to get even faster results just due to the breadth of knowledge in there, and the tips from others who are learning alongside you.

If you'd like to join us, we'd love to have you. Or, if you have any further queries at all, please don't hesitate to contact me at: team@helpmydog.com. I hope the answer to your review has cleared up any confusion!

Thanks again,
Madeleine

Do I recommend Help My Dog

Do I recommend Help My Dog?
It's a resounding Yes!!!
Dr Tom's teaching has helped me help my dog!
My dog's reactivity has greatly reduced, she can now pass strange dogs (on the opposite pavement) without any reaction at all.
She has even made a couple of canine friends.
I have the 10-day plan.
We've made huge Progress and had great fun along the way.
The plan alongside the FREE content on their FB page and in the podcasts is making a huge difference.
Thank you Help my Dog.

Not worth it

While there are some good techniques here, the 10 day "course" does not deliver anything beyond a few games. I thought it was oversold and overpromised as a training program, what it actually is seems to be is an upselling opportunity for all the other programs and add ons that will ACTUALLY give some training solutions. Classic web-based marketing.

Hi Fiona,

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your review.

I'm so sorry to hear you felt the 10 days of teaching was overhyped. As I've mentioned in other reviews here, the 'Help! My Walks are Stressful' course is our entry-level course and we do provide the opportunity at the end of the course for members to access our Help! My Dog Hub with a 50% discount. It might be this that you're referring to.

To explain a little bit about maybe why you didn't feel like it hit the mark for you, this course is aimed at owners who are coming to games-based learning with no experience of this type of training, and who need structured guidance with starting from scratch. It may be that you are more experienced (I notice that you recognised that there are lots of great techniques in the teaching) and therefore we might recommend a different starting point for you.

I would love to chat to you to help tailor a learning pathway for you as an alternative and I'm always available at: team@helpmydog.com if you would like to get in touch.

Thanks so much,
Madeleine

Give it a Go!

Highly recommend HelpmyDog. I’d tried group dog classes and individual training with 4 different trainers and none worked.
I was resigned to the idea that my dog’s behaviour couldn’t be improved but tried Helpmydog as a final thing before giving up and living with it.
The changes in my dog are beyond anything I could have hoped for. We had some immediate wins and we’ve stuck at it for 6 months.
He’s now so much more confident and we can walk in close proximity to other dogs without the barking, lunging and crazy behaviour we had previously.
He’s a much more confident and happier dog (and this has been commented on by people who didn’t know we were doing any kind of training).
The future looks much more positive for us.
And all this was from basically playing (very carefully devised) games in short bursts so it doesn’t really feel like work at all and it’s easy to fit into a busy life.

If you’re questioning whether to give it a go - my advice would be to give it a try. You’ve nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Don’t waste your money

Don’t waste your money. The “course” is really a marketing exercise to join a monthly subscription service. The training is all about continual rewards in simple games which are all similar. Most dog owners already know and use this and it works fine at home but not so easy when out walking. A very overhyped package

Hi Paul! Thanks so much for taking the time to share this feedback.

I'm so sorry to hear that you felt the programme was overhyped. To provide some context - the Help! My Walks are Stressful plan is our entry level course to help owners who are totally unfamiliar with how we can reshape dogs' brains via reward-based training, and it may be that you were already quite au-fait with this type of training. Dr. Tom Mitchell is an incredibly skilled Behaviourist who has helped thousands of owners overcome behaviour struggles through his Behaviour clinic, and Help! My Dog is where he shares these techniques more widely in a group and self-led setting, in order to help as many dogs and owners as possible.

As you mentioned, as well as the 10 Day Plan, we do also have a more advanced learning platform called 'The Help! My Dog Hub' which is where we have 1,200 owners who learn together and implement science-backed games. There is an invitation to join the Hub within the 10 Day Plan (which offers users of the plan a special discount) to help those who would like to advance their training further.

I'd also love to mention that we on the team at Help! My Dog are all super experienced with rewards-based training and we are always more than happy to answer any questions or provide guidance where you might be experiencing a hurdle in your training. If you would like to get in touch with me to get some help with transitioning to outdoor environments, I would love to help! You can get in touch here:
team@helpmydog.com

Thanks again and I really hope to be able to support you further, if you would like to reach out.

10 days to stress free walks- transformational and fun

10 days to stress free walks

This course helps with so many other struggles apart from transforming your walks. Playing fun games each day helps build relationship between you and your dog and is so enjoyable you don’t realise it is working until you walk your dog through a really busy distracting environment as I did this morning and he stays close and focussed on you. A fraction of the cost of 121 dog training and lifetime access granted , what’s not to love ? This is a course you will want to revisit time and time again.
Since doing this course my dog wants to stay close and focussed on me, leash pulling is a thing of the past and the best thing- we didn’t even realise we were training !
