Considering 253 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. People frequently struggled with unexpected hidden charges, additional fees that were not clearly communicated, and sudden price increases after completing their vehicle bookings. Customers described the support teams as completely unresponsive and unhelpful when trying to resolve complicated billing and deposit disputes. Reviewers also noted that local counter employees were often rude, dismissive, or completely indifferent to customer concerns. Some reviewers were happy with specific individual employees, describing them as exceptionally polite, patient, professional, and genuinely welcoming. A few consumers also experienced surprisingly quick, efficient, and smooth vehicle pickup service at several specific airport locations.

Van supplied almost empty, fuel card declined, no support

Extremely poor and stressful Hertz 24/7 experience.

I had a very poor experience with Hertz 24/7. I hired a Ford Transit van and, when I collected it, the fuel level was extremely low — only around 10–15 miles of range left. This made the vehicle almost unusable from the start and immediately caused stress and delay.

I had to divert from my route to find a suitable fuel station that accepted the fuel card. This alone added around 30 minutes to my journey. When I refuelled, the Hertz fuel card was declined three times. There was no clear information on the card or in the app showing the maximum fuel limit, so I had no way of knowing that the transaction would be rejected. I ended up having to pay £80.41 for diesel myself.

There was also no effective live support available at the time, which made the situation even more frustrating. Overall, I lost around 1 to 1.5 hours dealing with the fuel issue, payment problem, and the lack of immediate support. I also had to extend my booking because of the delay, which caused extra cost.

To make matters worse, Hertz appears to suggest that a £15 processing fee may apply to fuel reimbursement claims, which is completely unfair in this situation. The issue was caused by the van being supplied with almost no fuel and the fuel card limit/instructions not being clear.

This was a very stressful and disappointing experience. I would not expect this level of service from Hertz. Hertz should refund the full fuel cost, waive any processing fee, and review the additional booking cost caused by the delay.

The worst rental car company out of all i have used

I am a presidence circle member with Hertz due to being a Marriott ambassador. I tried switching to Hertz this year. Ive has about 6 Bookings and all of them have had issues:

There is no customer support number to call and branches dont answer their phones.

Their email is a black hole that takes days to get a responce if at all. The branch and customer service seem to work off different systems.

Twice I made a booking through the App and was told on arrival it was a US booking and had no insurance so was liable for the entire value of the car. The only way to upgrade to a basic 2.2k excess doubled the price.

I had a late charge, the time listed of return I was in an uber 30minutes away having dropped the car off, I have had to chase refunds multiple times.

The final straw for me was i left a vlog camera in the glove box, Ive chased and chased and no responce. It obviously been stolen by who ever cleaned the car. I will never use them again and will actively warn people not to use them.

Enterprise I have moved to answer calls in 2 minutes on the phone. Its night and day a better service

Avoid

I was issued a fine for a parking violation. Problem is - I had correctly paid for the parking and the fine was issued in error. Hertz 'paid it on my behalf', but that meant I couldn't appeal it. The citation was very clear - you can pay or you can appeal, but you can't do both. So Hertz decided I was liable for both the fine and their £40 'administration charge' for costing me £60.

I was told if I submitted evidence of the fine being issued incorrectly they would quash the invoice. I did. They didn't. They honestly expect me to pay £100 for a parking violation I did not commit.

I've elevated this to the BVRTK and they won't be getting a penny from me regardless, but just bear this in mind - they expect you to swallow the cost of their mistakes. This is clearly for them and the parking company to battle out. Miss me with this, Hertz.

Also, incredibly byzantine process of booking a car. Like you stepped back into the 90s before anyone had a computer.

Don’t let their past reputation deceive you.

I redelivered my hire car at Stansted airport on a Sunday afternoon, 54 minutes later than the time it was due. Apparently no problem and I caught my plane home. I was billed for an extra day’s hire, plus a late return charge plus 20% tax, USA style, which I had expected to be included in the price. I ended up paying not far short of double what I was expecting. I complained. No response. This company is down there with the other cowboys in this business. To be avoided!

Poor response to complaint

I was upgraded to a more expensive hire car under advice from the desk at the airport which turns out to be incorrect.

Hertz are virtually uncontactable. The two phone numbers given on their website and facebook page return 'you've dialled an incorrect number' and the chat button is unresponsive.

I found one phone number (again obscure) which only returned automated messages to my kind of query

I raised a two complaints 12 days ago but have heard nothing, only receiving 'no-reply' automated messages.

I was promised that my initial chat (I found an obscure route on my phone) would be emailed to me, and I could save it. It wasn't emailed and it was not explained how to save it (It's not obvious) My second chat was cut off by the agent before the chat was finished.

I can't see myself using Hertz again.

I will rate zero if I can

I will rate zero if I can. A rubbish company for rent a car. I booked a car and they said it is not fit for my luggage. They claim they upgrade me to another car with the price doubled.
They didn’t accompany me to the car and then I walk with all the luggage and find out there is no key in the car and then I walk back Waiting for another client to finish. In order to get the attendance service. Then I get the car and find out it is a manual car. then they need to raise up 25 pounds per day more if I want to get an automaticand up 125 pounds for a manual car! Extremely expensive and cheating

duplicated demage charge without authorisation

I rented a car from Hertz London two months ago. While the rental experience itself was good, they charged me twice for the car damage charges and were unable to provide an invoice with the correct amount for me to claim my insurance. I emailed them, they sent me the new invoice with wrong amount again and charged my card immediatedly. I emailed them but no one responded. I then used the live chat, and they forwarded my case to customer relations, telling me I need to wait 3–5 business days. This means that I need to pay the duplicate damage charges before they resolve their mistake.
I am totally disappointed, even though their rental service was initially good.

My 160 euro quote has turned out to be 250 euros
I wish I had read these reviews -
Telephoned to sort this out & spoke to a lovely man whom i could barely understand and he me!
My advice is 'DON'T!
I am annoyed I have to award one star - Hertz needs to realize that a company is judged by how it deals with customers whom they have let down!!

30 Days and Counting

Two weeks after hiring and returning a car to Hertz, I still have a pre-authorisation deposit blocking almost £500 on my credit card.
I have a receipt from Hertz showing nothing outstanding and have also had an email saying "Our records show that your rental vehicle has been checked in and notification has been sent to your credit card provider to release the deposit amount."
Lloyds tell me that they cannot remove this pending transaction as it has to be instigated by Hertz and seemingly this hasn't been done despite the email from Hertz.
Edit 29/06/26:
Over 30 days since Hertz took the deposit as a pre-authorisation on my credit card it was still showing as pending despite Hertz repeatedly telling me that they had requested it to be released. I phoned Lloyds again who still have not had a release request from Hertz but agreed to remove it from my pending payments due to the elapsed lengthy time period.
NB. My daughter hired a car from Budget at the same time in order to get to the same wedding venue in France from the airport. Her pre-authorisation was cleared within a week!

I would strongly advise against using…

I would strongly advise against using Booking.com for car hire.

I booked a hire car through Booking.com with Hertz and paid for full insurance coverage. However, when I arrived at the airport, I was told by Hertz that the insurance purchased through Booking.com was not valid and would not be accepted.

The Hertz representative advised me to cancel the Booking.com reservation and book directly with Hertz instead. I was assured by Booking.com that if I did this, I would receive a full refund.

Trusting their advice, I booked the car again directly with Hertz, costing me significantly more money. Three weeks later, I still had not received the promised refund. After chasing Booking.com, I was then told that they would not be refunding me after all because the original booking was considered valid.

As a result, I have effectively been forced to pay twice for the same car hire. I feel completely misled by Booking.com and badly let down by their customer service. What started as a simple car rental turned into a stressful and expensive experience due to conflicting information and broken promises.

I will not be using Booking.com again and would recommend others think carefully before booking car hire through them.

Worst customer service I've ever…

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. Local Agents didn't email confirmation as promised so don't have any documentation for an insurance claim. Email communication is slow, poor and unsatisfactory. Agent provided a number to call that was full of errors. No customer service numbers that are listed actually work so unable to speak to anyone. Messages on Facebook just ended chat prematurely. Shocking. Avoid.

So unhelpful

So unhelpful. Portacabin ‘office’ cold, dirty and not enough staff to deal with number of renters.
They failed to help as I had booked through a 3rd party. The 3rd party (booking.com) also refused to help to change an erroneous name on the booking.
We were frustrated and the employee deemed our frustration to be abusive! She then refused to give us the car and told us to leave the portacabin and get a taxi elsewhere. There was no way our behaviour could be deemed as abusive. Frustrated. Yes. But never abusive. No refund has been offered. We have paid for a rental car that we were not supplied with and have had to endure extra financial cost and hours of wasted time trying to source another rental car.
Do not complain about poor service - you’ll be accused of abuse and thrown out with no refund.
DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ.

This is about the Hertz PCO Marble Arch…

This is about the Hertz PCO Marble Arch branch.

Absolutely terrible service. They cancelled my PCO booking the day before pickup with a 10‑second phone call, no apology, no explanation, and no attempt to offer another PCO car or another PCO location. Just “we don’t have a car” and goodbye.

Yet they still took my £150 deposit, and now I have to wait up to 48 hours to get it back for a booking they cancelled.

Completely unreliable and disrespectful to PCO drivers who depend on these vehicles to earn a living.

No help and rip off

No help and rip off. Arrived at Heathrow hertz to collect prebooked car after long 30hr flight from Melbourne. I had forgotten my driver's license which I acknowledge was my fault but it had been very stressful in last 24 hours before leaving with adult son in hospital and unwell. And travelling to uk to visit very unwell inlaws. The booking was in my name and I was designated as main driver. Despite having passport ID and booking on my phone accessible via pin, and my husband having his license and able tp be the sole driver. They refused to allow us to use the booking. Due to the fact it was cancelled at booking in time the booking costs were lost. And we were then offered a car at more than 4 times the original cost to rebook. Which we can't afford. So now trying to get to see family by train. I will NEVER use Hertz again. I know I forgot my license but I had strong I'd to show I was the booker and my husband with a license to drive. Where is any humanity. Absolute nightmare.

Scammed for Damage !

Worst experience with a hire car company ever in Italy.

Following drop off of car at Malpensa airport T1, I was shocked to receive an email listing supposed 'damage' to the vehicle - Hertz retained my 690 euro deposit.

Forwarded a video of the car upon pick up WITH THIS DAMAGE ALREADY ON IT ( A FEW SCRATCHES) they denied it was there; when I pointed out that I am a lawyer and I would be pursuing legal action against them for wrongful theft of my money and fraud - they quickly replied, that they were very sorry and of course the damage was already there. IT WAS CLEARLY IN THE VIDEO I TOOK OF THE VEHICLE AT PICK UP SO THEY TRIED TO MAKE ME PAY FOR DAMAGES THAT WERE ALREADY THERE. ..ASTONISHING INCOMPETENCE.

Awaiting a full refund. Scammers and liars - had I not been persistent and spoke fluent Italian they would have unlawfully robbed me of 600 euros.

Avoid at all costs!!!

Hertz charging my Mastercards with no authorisation

Returned a Car 18/05/26 and on arrival the guy receiving the vehicle told me within 60 seconds of looking over the car that I’d be charged £215 for a new tyre. 2-3 times the cost of the tyre, fitted!

I challenged this at the Customer Service desk within a couple of minutes and they told me I can take the car to have the tyre changed. Minutes later they told me I can’t as the guy who told me I’d be billed £215 had already closed the hire! They advised that I email customer-relations-uk @ hertz .com to dispute the charge.

I emailed and received what read like a part scripted/Ai response saying the matter would be looked in to; I have their name! I don’t believe the responder ever did look into the situation fully if at all!

The next day, Tuesday 19th May, Hertz attempted to charge my Business Mastercard £114 at 12:00, this continued everyday, at the same time, up until and including Monday 25th May!

Comms back and forth via email to customer-relations-uk @ hertz .com always ended in me receiving basic scripted/Ai responses!

Despite me requesting a call back via reservations line (I have their name!) and multiple emails… to date, no call from Hertz!

Wednesday 27th May 20:00 Hertz charged my Personal Mastercard £260.72! No call, email or any kind of comms prior to doing this!
Thursday 28th May I receive an email with a Rental Agreement/Invoice for the amount, but no mention of what the charge is for! I could never submitted an Invoice like this to my Accountant!

I’ve called Heathrow multiple times, no answer!
Emailing has proven pointless! Scripted/Ai responses is Terrible Customer Service in such matters, so I’m escalating this to BVRLA

Poor experience

Booked a manual. Told at the counter small print says no guarantee of manual or automatic.
Asked why a preference was offered then. Counter person couldn’t explain.
Had to accept a smaller manual.
Read this fine print then.
WILL NEVER USE HERTZ AGAIN.

I rented a car from Budapest airport

I rented a car from Budapest airport, and the cost is under £200 for six days. I drove it across the border into Slovakia (paying the road tax myself) and then into Austria (again, paying the road tax myself). The charge for having picked the car up in Budapest and dropping it in Hungary was £482.60.
This is disproportionate.
