Australian customer
Australian customer, rented from Thrifty/Hertz JoBurg Airport in Oct/Nov -- 4 weeks, paid in full with all insurances at time of booking, requested a certain vehicle, was informed they'd do their best but can't promise the exact car is avail on the day (but instead another one from the same category). On pick-up the desired car was unavail - I got offered an upgrade to larger/nicer vehicle for same price (and basically a new/2025 car) - much appreciated! I drove some 5500kms, had the car washed&cleaned before return (1000km on dusty roads left one very dusty car), noticed a couple of new very small scratches (superficial 1-2cm). Return was easy, quick, brief inspection by agent, all was well from their end (scratches semed too small to worry about). Final invoice showed no extra costs. I later requested and was sent a confirmation that my R9000 pre-authorization bond was cancelled (not used). Very happy with all of that. NOTE: more generally - I researched extensively re rental companies... and eventually realised that it's always going to be a bit of a hit&miss&luck . One of the best reviewed companies (Woodford) was initially my firt pick - but their poor relpies&explanations to my questions regarding their contradictory T&Cs let me talk to Thrifty/Hertz -- and eventually book through them (and will do so again if visiting SA). Many thanks!
Zero stars. Scam
I should have reviewed TrustPilot prior to renting from Hertz. I rented a car for a month in Gabarone Botswana. 1. The actual price was more than double (BWP22k) quoted (BWP 10.6k) once local insurance add-ons were included. I discovered later I could have purchased a cheap car for the price. The car was fine. The real issues began when they processed a bond (BWP 5.5k or over NZD$750) as a payment rather than hold on my credit card. After two months too and fro they insist it has been refunded when it hasn't My bank advised the "refund" bounced back to the payer's account. This is clearly is a scam. My bank and credit card company are now challenging the original payment. I am very disappointed.
This is to rate Hertz Mthatha
This is to rate Hertz Mthatha - Specifically a lady by the name of Ngcali who works there. She always goes out of her way and assists me as an avid customer who hires at least once a month with them. People like Ngcali, who not onky meet but exceed our expectations as customers are a joy to be around. May she soar to higher heights at her work.
This is probably the worst company…
This is probably the worst company ever.
They allowed me to rent a car. The day of pickup they said "sorry sir you don't have a credit score" after long fights of why did you allow me in the first place to book a car and eventually using a different company. They are not refunding my payment. They said it will take about 72 hours. It's now 2 weeks and still haven't received anything.
You have been warned ... proceed at your own risk
We rented a car from Hertz South Africa through CarJet. We were never told that we would have to pay a security deposit when we collected the car at Hertz. Hertz at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg made us pay a $2,000 security deposit which was only released five weeks after the rental had finished; when we were back at home in Australia! Neither CarJet nor Hertz wanted to expedite the release of our security deposit. Why did they have to hold it so long? Last time we use CarJet and Hertz because CarJet wasn't transparent that a security deposit would be required, and Hertz was unwilling to expedite the release of our deposit.
Simply atricious, appalling and utterly rubbish.
Simply the worst experience of my life. Atricious, appalling and utterly rubbish.
I rented a car in March 2025. The windscreen was chipped. Against policy, they repaired it and charged my card - no communication. They REFUSE to send me any proof of cost and now I cannot claim on my UK insurance. Honestly if I could I'd walk in and wreck the place until someone listened. They dont answer the phone, they dont answer emails. Simply and completely appalling business. AVOID.
Ripped off by Hertz
We've been ripped off by Hertz Joburg Airport.
When we gave back the car, they told us that the car needs to be cleaned so that they will charge additionnal cleaning fees. The problem is that nobody told us at first that we would need to give back the car cleaned ! Otherwise, we would have done it !
I have travelled all around the world and this is the first time I hear about giving back a cleaned car...
I told the employee that I refuse to pay anything and they gave up after a while telling me that they apologize and that, indeed, they cannot bill anything they didn't warn us about before.
Few days later, I saw a money transfer on my bank account to Hertz for 11€.
I consider that Hertz stole money from me without my consent. It is a shame !
When will rental cars companies stop acting like mafia ?!
Hertz South Africa disgusting customer…

Stay away.. Fraudsters at work
My husband rented a car from them and was given a car with some previous damage, which he wasn't made aware of when he got the car. When he returned it 2 days later, the guy checks randomly under the car and says the car is damaged. My husband insisted that there was no way that could be possible as he was not in any type of accident or incident. Company then sends an email that they will charge R4000 for 'damages incurred'. Plus they charged him for fuel despite him having informed them that he's filled up the car. Unscrupulous company.
Avoid at all costs and where possible
Avoid at all costs. How I wish there was a negative star for this company.
I rented a car from them through another referral company, collected car from hERTZ Capetown Airport in March 2024, up to now they have never refunded my deposit.
The car Was violently seized from me for going over the speed guide on south African freeway. This very uncouth big but 'little brain' recovery guy his name Stanley, intercepted me in Johansburg, was heading to Polokwane, This unprofessional Stanley stops me and says "you have been overspeeding I have to take the car from you, and you have to find some other means to continue with your journey"... And I said fair enough, but show me something so I am sure that NOT some random guy is stealing the car from me. And I asked stanley for formal procedure to execute a seizure, and he did not have nor know of one, and he calls another random guy and give the phone to me and I listened to no use. But this stanley did not serve me with anything to assure me that he is genuine, the ID he had was faded and it was not from Hertz! Long story shorter, when I insisted that for a big company like Hertz, there should be a certain procedure to follow under such circumstances,... Stanley flipped, started swearing at me, threatening me (In his own words; "I going to fck you up if you don't give me the keys" shouting on top of his voice, the 6foot+ guy looking over me 5.2ft little guy.... Really there was absolutely NO reason whatsoever to come to me in such a manner totally unprovoked. People gathered and without me reacting and quiet people were pulling him away as if I was retaliating, even when I had not moved a finger. So I told this guy, ok, you made you case, let me take some pictures of you taking the keys so atleast I have some evidence who took the car from me because you have failed to follow any formal procedure... you are behaving as if this is your personal car in circumstance where you are suppossed to be professional, when I said that he went MANIC like he had been attacked by wasps. some guy pulled him on the side to calm him down, only then I realise that this guy had been his coleague all along... Fast forward,>>>>
After all that Altercation, I gave the keys to this new guy, stanley's colleague and took pictures of the car but without this big but little stanley guy...
All along I had been trying to get Justin at Hertz capetown Airport to no avail, now he replies me by text after stanley the crook has taken the car unprofessionally; after explaining to Justin what and how has happened, Justin told me and I quote; "Those recovery guys are from a different office and there is nothing much I can do, I am in dispatch, but I will get my manager to call you." up to now NO manager from Hertz ever called me.
Back to going over the speed guide on a freeway; Why doesn't Hertz install speed limiters in all car if it is a matter of life and deathe as little stanley made it seem, instead of Harrassing their customers using those rouge, untrained and ignorant recovery guys like stanley the crook..??
Then when it came to refunding my deposit, over 11,000rands.... I have never seen a penny back and the irony is when I contacted Justin at help desk at T.O capetown airport, Justin confested that he doesnot understand how the deposit refund is administered yet he is the one who secures the deposit before handing out the keys.. Again as before he tells me that "I will get his manager to call you about the refund" and suprised Not,... I am still hopeful that mr manager will call me one day, perhaps an email.....
VERY UNPROFESSIONAL FROM START TO SEIZURE TODATE.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE.
Hertz is a scam
People Hertz is a scam plz be careful. I recently used one of their vehicles and upon pickup showed the hertz employee all the scratches on the vehicle and he seemingly recorded it and when I took the car back they want me to explain the scratches that are just below the scratches that I pointed out. Plz plz take photos of the vehicle when you get it or do not accept a car with any damages at all. They try to pin old damages on you. Plz plz be careful.
I am experiencing a horrible time with…
I am experiencing a horrible time with Hertz in South Africa.
I paid through my international office and gold plus card a car for JHB, they did not receive any payments which I have done online in my home country, credit card receipt available, the do not care and charged me a second time the same amount. After this, no contact anymore.
Betrayers, real thieves!
I had the most horrible experience with Hertz OR Tambo
I had the most horrible experience with these fraudsters. Please AVOID at all cost especially if you live abroad because these thieves will continue taking money out of your account without any explanation or communication.
I rented a car from JHB international airport for approximately two weeks and I paid in full for rental and an additional deposit of R9000. I rang them to extend my rental and they said it was sorted, two days later I received a nasty call from a guy called Stanley and he told me that if I don’t return the car they will report it stolen, he told me that he has been tracking my moves (people get hijacked in SA because people like him communicate with thieves, inside job). Immediately I was worried about my safety and I drove to CPT international airport to verify the matter, all staff there are good and helpful. However they said Stanley told them to take the car from me. They checked the car, clean, full tank no scratches and they signed the paperwork. All of this was recorded on my son’s phone.
I waited for my refund and emailed them, they ignored me. In Jan 2024 they made several attempts to take more money out of my account, my bank AIB should have blocked them as this was suspicious but unfortunately they succeeded in taking a further R7500 (unauthorised payment) I still don’t know why as my emails are ignored.
On 20.09.24 they passed on my contact details to a third party (0783076624) a lady who claimed to be from their legal team, she said Hertz told her that I owe them money.
Firstly I asked her why have they ignored my emails for 9 months.
Secondly, where is my refund and the additional money they stole after I left the country.
Finally, why is she calling my phone and not following the right procedure by putting everything in writing. They have my email, I asked her to put it in writing and then I will get my solicitor to respond. I have not received any correspondence from them.
Overall they are nasty thieves and give the company and the country a bad reputation especially from overseas customers. What a corrupt company!
Rent vehicle with them on a month to…
Rent vehicle with them on a month to month basis
Vehicle was scratched by another vehicle - I reported the case to them and the police. I have a case number.
I then got a second vehicle which I am also paying in full every month because they requested the one with the damages. In the mean time I requested a quote for the damaged and suddenly was told to pay R35000 for a scratch and no quote was received. I have no idea what the R35000 entails. I tried to speak to Hertz Mthatha but the manager unfortunately does not care about client relationships. Tomorrow they are collecting a paid up vehicle over an accident damage vehicle by third party for damages I was not even quoted on.
I pay
I had a very negative experience with…
I had a very negative experience with Hertz in South Africa. I booked a rental car through a third party and because there was a crack on the windscreen they took a significant proportion of the deposit. I had cover with the third party but Hertz would not provide me with an invoice for the damage or the money that they took from me for two months, and this was only after 10 emails requesting the invoice. In addition to this, 4 months after I received the car I received a payment on my credit card from Hertz without any explanation. When I emailed them they said it was for a fine from a local authority but did not provide any details on what this fine was for or any evidence.
Haven’t received deposit in nearly 3 weeks
Rented a car on and returned it on the 5th. They told me that I would receive my money latest by the 15th. It is now the 22nd and they have still not given me my money. Do not use Hertz or Firefly.
Hertz Sandton Branch will never…
Hertz Sandton Branch will never dissapoint, I got my Car Full and Clean. They Assisted me by checking the Car even when I returned it, it was full and clean.
25/05/24 - 28/05/24
Will not use Hertz again
Will not ise Hertz again
They are nice when you are picking up the car but after your retun they ignore your emails. Money was debited out of my account when i had already gone overseas. When i tried to follow up my emails were ignored, the girl who responded wasnt polite either and its more expensive to call South Africa from overseas so I let go but im not happy. Not using Hertz again. Sorry
