So just passed my class 1 HGV 1st attempt
So just passed my class 1 HGV 1st attempt and couldn't be happier. Paul of Ace Driver Training was exceptional and although I can't say I wouldn't have passed with anyone else, what I can say with confidence is that Paul was the reason I did pass.
After holding a full driving licence and embarking on a lifetime ambition to hold a class 1 licence, I thought I knew it all, but things have changed and it soon became apparent there was work to be done. What really helped me was Paul being a direct speaking instructor who will tell you when you are making a mistake (no prisoners taken), but all with good reason, to make you a better driver.
There was no ambiguity or grey areas, when I was wrong, I was told, but it was also followed up with an explanation of the right way to do it and we would go over it again until I got it right. As an older person who needs things drumming into him, Paul did exactly that. Initially I sensed some frustration in my driving from Paul, but I soon learned that it was coming from a good place as he really wants his students to pass, he was frustrated for me.
Due to challenges with local test availability (Birmingham), Paul booked me in at Weedon (Northampton) and to ensure I gained some local knowledge, on the morning of the test, he set out at 4.15am to take the lorry over and we started training at 5.30am. This was the most useful time of all and Paul really helped by allowing me to shape that morning, letting me state what I was uncomfortable with and when I wanted a break to ensure I was not too stressed going into the test itself.
Since the test Paul has also assisted me trying to find a place to MOT my Motorhome which I think gives a good indicator of the type of person he is. We will keep in touch, especially as I considering taking a PSV with Paul too - why not?.
In short, a hard working no nonsense knowledgeable guy who is as pleased to see you pass as you are yourself.
