Avoid - very poor warranty return/repair experience

Consistent with other feedback - everything was OK, until I needed to use their customer service for warranty repairs of an e-bike hub motor bearing failure. At that point not only they were unprofessional and incompetent about the item they are selling (e.g. raising my applied dielectric grease as a big issue for motor electronics - not realising that it is a non-conductive material and is in fact exactly used for those purposes), but also attempted to avoid all of their legal responsibilities under the Consumer Rights Acts, Warranty section, including:

1. Agreeing to a warranty repair AFTER I have disclosed via email that I changed the connectors and have opened the motor, and then having a complete change of heart once I have sent the item to them, asking I pay additionally for their time and claiming that warranty is void because I have opened the motor and that they "are not legally required to read my emails in full";

2. Not willing to pay for warranty shipping (that must be covered by the merchant if the item is under warranty and not being returned);

3. Not exercising due-care while repairing the unit and causing further electrical damage and blaming it on me without acknowledging that there are more speed controllers on the market with different connectors / pinouts than what they are used to;

To get this resolved I was forced to issue a letter before action for small claims court. Please consider if you are willing to go this far too if you do end up using their services. I personally would have not, with the experience I have now.

September 22, 2020 point in case on avoiding their legal responsibilities: their website now states "Warranty is voided with immediate effect if ANY of the Mac Motor wires and connectors are cut, deformed or changed. [...] If your existing controller does not have the relevant connections then you will need to change the connectors on that to suit the factory connections on the Mac Motor. Opening of the Mac Motor casing will also invalidate warranty." - please KNOW YOUR CONSUMER RIGHTS and be willing to enforce them. Their policy is not enforceable simply because a) you cannot waive your statutory rights with commercial agreements (even if you sign one - "your statutory rights are your minimum guaranteed rights under the law, so they always apply and overrule the retailer’s store policy"); b) it would be classed as "unfair terms" and c) warranty is still in full force if your modifications did not cause the fault under claim.

In short, I would personally avoid them at all costs if there is even the smallest chance that the item might need customer service / warranty repairs.

September 23, 2020: responsibility avoidance further example re. vendor response below:

1. "infamous greasing of the motor[...]these bizarre actions" - as per review above it seems that the merchant is not aware of common industry practices and, in fact, industry research (please google "oil cooling your hub motor" and similar, as links are not allowed in reviews)

2. "We agreed to a warranty repair BEFORE we were aware that the customer had initially opened up a sealed mechanical unit himself.":
My email to them on 19 September 2019 at 21:15: "Hi, The motor developed the following issue: LINK (please google "Loud clicking noise MAC 12T hub" to find the post - as links are not allowed in reviews) [...] Further, I've changed the cable leads to bullets"

Their response on 20 September 2019 at 08:54: "That is almost certainly a faulty bearing [...] We will be happy to honour a warranty repair, the only thing we need to charge you for is the carriage of the motor back to you."

3. "Buried within this third party online thread was an admission": As you will note, the post above has not been updated since originally posted and dated BEFORE the email and I literally state in the original post 2nd sentence that "I've disassembled the hub" and pictures clearly showing that.

4. "At no point did we attempt to extricate ourselves from our legal obligations" as a simple example, please see above email statement "the only thing we need to charge you for is the carriage of the motor back to you.". Under warranty it is merchant's duty to pay/refund shipping fees, using "need" is a clear attempt to avoid that.

5. "the customer had connected the 5v and ground wires incorrectly" again, instead of slowing down and realising that there are different motor controllers with different pinouts, the customer gets blamed for their lack of due-care during the warranty repair.

6. "Our 100% eBay feedback" indeed - ebay does not allow to change feedback once it is left, e.g. in cases the item needs warranty repairs and they do not go smoothly.

I believe this concludes my review beyond doubt of their lack of professionalism, competence and responsibility.

This was in over thirty years of retail trading, one of the most unorthodox cases we have ever had the misfortune to deal with! Unfortunately, the customer in question recklessly took it upon himself to diagnose/repair the motor himself and only subsequently decided to contact us when he was unsuccessful. To compound matters further, he adopted an aggressive and confrontational approach throughout and failed to take responsibility at any point for his highly irregular actions.

With regards to the infamous greasing of the motor, which he refers to...it is indeed customary to grease mechanical parts; to drown the motor, both externally and internally, in grease, is extremely unconventional to say the least. The clean up operation due to these bizarre actions would have taken us hours.

The facts are as follows:

We agreed to a warranty repair BEFORE we were aware that the customer had initially opened up a sealed mechanical unit himself.

By his own admission, he conceded: 'This is my first build so don't have much experience in
mechanical hub failures .'

Having prodded and poked around in a motor and unsurprisingly been unable to diagnose any fault, then, and only at the suggestion of another forum member, did he deem it necessary to contact us and even then, he did not directly inform us about what he had done. We were instead sent a link to an external online forum to view a video illustrating the issue with the motor. Buried within this third party online thread was an admission, not to us, the selling merchant, but to other forum users that he had taken it upon himself to open up the motor. Lacking the necessary skills to remedy the problem and only on the suggestion of other forum users did he contact us.

Had the customer directly communicated to us what had taken place, we would have, at the very least, questioned his actions and clarified what needed to be done before we could even discuss the returns procedure, as this was very clearly not a routine case.

At no point did we attempt to extricate ourselves from our legal obligations. We have been trading successfully since 1988 and we are a company of principles. Attaining customer satisfaction is our primary goal and we pride ourselves on our exemplary after sales service. Our 100% eBay feedback record (10,366) is testimony to this. eBay is a very tough trading platform for sellers and our feedback alone illustrates that we must be doing something right to have achieved such impressive results. This case, however, was exceptional. We were denied an opportunity from the outset to repair the alleged faulty product when an issue was identified. We committed to honouring the warranty, unaware of the unorthodox activities that the customer had carried out, having viewed the online video and not having delved deep within a third party thread. Our conduct throughout has been more than reasonable and we have at all times been motivated by a genuine desire to resolve this matter.

Despite all the irregularities that had taken place, we accepted the return of the motor in order to carry out a repair in our own time and at our own expense – the only condition being that the motor be completely cleaned of grease. We carried out the repair during lockdown and even replaced additional parts in the motor, namely the hall sensors as the customer had connected the 5v and ground wires incorrectly. The motor was sent back months ago and until now, we heard nothing further from the customer.

At every opportunity we respectfully attempted to reach out to the customer, but regrettably, he has steadfastly refused to accept any responsibility for his actions and unfortunately, when one adopts such an entrenched and defensive position, it is impossible to make any meaningful progress.

Stay safe everyone

Brilliant service

My battery on my Raleigh Velo finally died and my local dealer told me it had to be recelled as Raleigh had stopped making them. Found this company via a cycle forum and contacted Jimmy who replied quickly and was very informative about the options I had with the battery. Payment was only taken when the battery recell was completed. Jimmy kept me informed as to how long the recell would take and this was done within the time he stated. Very happy to recommend ebike batteries. Great service and I am now mobile again thanks to Jimmy and the team!

Couldn't fault this service - highly recommended

I'd called my local e-bike dealer only to be told that the battery was too far damaged and could not be repaired (and had accidently dropped it and it wasn't charging). At £500+ for a new one, I wasn't giving up so searched the website and found Jimmy and eBikebatteries.co.uk and am I glad I did. The communication throughout was excellent - he was upfront and honest about whether or not he could repair it (so much so I had started to research cheaper batteries to buy a new one) BUT.....he worked his magic and I am now back on the road. Great service, good value and a pleasure to deal with - thank you Jimmy!

An excellent service

ebikebatteries provide an excellent service from pick of the battery to return. I have an old but good peugot ebike . The battery ceased working . Jimmy recelled it and also found that the charging system was no longer working so he adapted the battery with a new charging system and et voila I have a trusty ebike with a new lease of life. All this during lockdown!!
I appreciated the skill, problem solving and ready communication that was on offer from Jimmy and the company .
I highly recommend them.

Had a failing 36V 10Ah battery

Had a failing 36V 10Ah battery, could not track down any replacement battery packs from this overseas manufacturer, so sent it to Jimmy at eBikebatteries to re-cell. They did so promptly, raised it to 36V 17.5Ah and the range has been extended. Excellent service thank you, regards, Nick

electric bike battery recelling

My 3 year old battery was losing range and power.
I was delighted with my electric bikes battery recelling!
I was provided with excellent after care information but most importantly the battery now has about 20% more range and feels a lot more powerful. This has greatly extended the range of my trips.
Brilliant job well down and thanks.

Good service and a good product

I never write reviews for anybody who requests them, so I'm happy that I found this place to review without any prompting from this company.
I found them to be very informative about the process of recelling my battery and the technical specifications of the cells to be used. I was more than happy to pay a little more for the superior Boston Power Swing cells on the basis that they would last for many many more recharge cycles than the cheap ones being flogged on ebay.
The battery was collected next day after my email request, and was back with me within a week. They also diagnosed a fault with the BMS which I was immediately emailed about and which was fixed at my request at a reasonable cost.
I am very happy with the service, and the battery is a great improvement over the original one.

My ancient e-bike's now going like a train

My ancient electric bike's original battery was fading so I took the plunge and asked Cem and the team at ebike batteries if they could re-cell it.

They couldn't have been more helpful and my bike now goes like a train and am having great fun going round the Isle of Wight on it when it’s not raining!

It’s genuinely like having a brand new bike. I'm really happy with the service and the results.

Re-build of Cytronex battery

I just wanted to say that your battery conversion on my Cytronex is a revelation. I have been using this system for over 10 years with the old NiMH battery and I know it really well. The new battery is so much better that it makes me think that the old one under-powered the motor even from new - of course it then faded from there over time.
I now have much more power, making hill climbing a doddle and it now maintains power for my whole approx 24 mile very hilly journey, it is also of course lighter to carry around. Very satisfied!

Amazing service, amazing product!

I have now well and truly tested my recelled battery and I love it!

It's made such a difference. I now no longer need to get off my bike when attempting even a small hill. Today I cycled up one that I would not normally consider and my bike sailed up it. Also, the battery life has massively improvedI

Anyone looking to enhance the power of their electric bikes and their battery life, definitely go to Ebikebatteries.co.uk.

Amazing Battery Has Tranformed My Bike

I wanted to write and let you know how happy I am with the battery.
Overnight it has transformed how I use my bike.
I am 48 and have the starts of arthritis in my knee from years of cycling.
For the last 3 months I have been riding out using throttle only on my bike, but have been really limited by the small 10Ah battery. I couldn’t go more than 12-13 miles or a 6 mile radius from home.
This morning I rode 20 miles over the South Downs and still had plenty of juice left.
I got home and charged up for a bit, then went out for another 10 miles after lunch.
Absolutely brilliant and thanks a million 😀
