I hate LA Fitness

I hate LA Fitness, I went there to find out about Silver Sneakers. they said i had to talk to Assad, I didn't know he was s salesman. All he did was tried to pressure me to buy Personal Training and would not take no. He wanted to sign me up for $299 down and $200 a month for a year. He was so persistent he started scheduling me on my Google calendar. I stopped going or answering calls. Told him to cancel my membership, he said I have to talk to the GM.

DO NOT JOIN LA FITNESS

DO NOT JOIN LA FITNESS. Go to the YWCA or YMCA instead. It is more affordable and they have experience working with middle class to low income individuals.

I am severely disappointed in the treatment and services at the LA Fitness Uptown located at 3001 Hennepin Ave S Suite 2210, Minneapolis, MN 55408. I brought in an ad from the LA Fitness Website stating that there was a “$99.99 Initiation Fee and just $29.99 for multi-club access” (I have enclosed the ad there was NO expiration date listed). At sign up, I was told that even though the promotion had passed its trial period the $128.99 would be honored. After sign up, I requested a receipt 3 times from Damon Brown, the membership coordinator. Each time he stated that “You will receive the receipt via email.” I insisted on having a paper copy for my records and was given the runaround each time.

I have checked my email everyday since 9/8/2017 and have still failed to receive a receipt in my spam or main email boxes. The $128.99 promised was not honored and my bank informed me on Saturday, September 9th that I was charged $171.34. On my second visit, Monday, September 11th 2017 at 4pm, I was given a “preview” training session with a man named Nick. I told him I could not afford the membership fees and he kept negotiating down to $160 a month and a split of the initiation fee ($259, $130 scheduled for 9/15/2017).

I felt pressured and he was giving me a very cold response when I explained to him that I did not have the funds to pay for the personal training. I called him afterwards at 5:54pm on Monday, September 11th (9/11/2017) stating I no longer wanted personal training services. I asked Nick if I needed a cancellation form and he stated no. Naturally, due to the lack of documentation I received with Damon, I decided to write this letter instead.

Closed gym one day after accepting membership fee - AVOID

As stated in the Financial Times newspaper, LA Fitness is in financial trouble and is attempting to sell off 40% of their gyms to raise the money they need. Unfortunately my wife did not realise this and one day after paying a membership fee, she was told that the gym was closing. We were promised the membership fee back but this has not happened so we are now having to threaten the company with legal action to get the money back and we will take legal action if they continue to resist this request. We suspect they may be trading whilst insolvent. Learn from our experience and avoid giving them any money as you may lose it.

DO NOT SIGN UP TO

I received a call from Adam at my local branch and advised they were offering special promotions which included no joining fee and a monthly price of £35. I had never been into this gym so advised I was possibly interested but would need to see it first. He was pushy and advised me this promotion was due to end and unless I provided my details to him there and then he could not guarentee this offer. I agreed with him that I would provide my details to secure the offer, he would supply a 3 free day pass and if I decided I liked it after this he would sign me up.At the end of the call I asked what I would do next and he advised he was actually too busy to see me himself so I would just have to go into the gym and speak to someone else on reception to get access and they would provide paperwork to look at. After sleeping on this I decided the next day that I realy didn't have the time to attend a gym and I made a phone call to the branch to advise I was no longer interested and could they remove my details from there system.
Around 3 weeks later I saw that payment had been taken out of my account so I immediately made a phone call to the branch and was told Adam was busy but would call me back to get this sorted. I never received a call back after I phoned 3 times and so at this point I decided to cancel the direct debit.
A week later I received a debt letter in the post to advise I owed them money. I made a phone call to the head office where I spoke to Emma and explained all of the below. She was very helpful and advised she would speak to the branch to get this rectified.I heard no more until yesterday when I received a voicemail asking me to call Emma back.Upon calling her back I spoke to 3 different people, each of who said they did not know who she was and they were unable to transfer me through to anyone else who could help. After calling on a different number I found online I finally spoke to Dennis who found my details and advised me that they had my details down on there system as having joined so there was nothing more they could do and I had to pay. When I questioned that I had advised I didn't want to sign up and had not actually signed any contract/seen terms and conditions, he advised me I didn't have to under there policy as they had signed me up themselves!!! What they have done is clearly wrong and I will not be making any further phone calls/making payment. If someone within management would like to get this issue resolved then I can be emailed as I do not trust that anything discussed on the phone is actually noted!!
