Having dealt with Martin tolhurst solicitors nearly all year I have had a lovely experience. Trying to purchase a flat for the most part of the year and then deciding on buying a house I was supported by Alan Stevens then was passed over to Josh Ingleton. Looked after very well by both and a special thanks to Josh who made the last part of the process as smooth as possible. Would highly recommend Martin tolhurst to friends and family.

We have used this company before & had not had an overly bad experience. Sometimes it had been difficult to get hold of someone then others had got involved. House selling is still a stressful procedure even after over 30 years of 3 house sales. Right up until the last minute of exchange & completion you feel in limbo. On this occasion I thank Emily for her attention & communication getting this complete.

Great and professional experience through my mortgage process.

After receiving such a great service from Martin Tolhurst from the sale of my previous property, I used them again for my next purchase.
I found them to be very responsive, friendly, informative, proactive and really helped push the sale through as quick as possible. I never had to chase them on anything (they were actually chasing me!). They also have a very useful app where you can see what steps are outstanding which means you don't have to sit there wondering where you are in the process and stops you keep sending them emails.
I will definitely continue to use them for any further purchases/sales. Gemma Nie in particular is GREAT!

I used Tolhurst as they had been recommended by the vendor's estate agent.
Basically everything seemed very slow. I had no property to sell and the vendor was not buying a property. But it still took from the offer date of 19/5/25 until 10/10/25 to complete. I don’t believe any major time consuming issues arose. If I thought things had gone quiet I would send a chaser and then things got moving a little. There were also specific errors/annoyances:
15/7/25 I received another SDLT exemption letter to complete despite the fact that one had been completed a couple of months earlier. This was pointed out, but no comment was made by Tolhurst
21/7/25 It was only at this advanced stage in the process that Tolhurst asked for certain things (proof of the source of wealth - my parents were helping me to buy. The estate agent had asked for the same details two months previously. Tolhurst asked for a previous formal ISA closing statement despite having seen a “transfer in” transaction on my current ISA provider’s statement. This took closing statement took some getting hold of.
15/8/25 I chased Tolhurst as the seller had responded to queries on 12/8/25. I had been helpfully told this by the estate agents' sales progressor Wards. I eventually got the responses from Tolhurst on 29/8/25 with no update in meantime.
9/9/25 I found out from the estate agent that Tolhurst had notified seller's solicitor that they (Tolhurst) thought they had already reported to the buyer with the Contract for signature when they hadn't. "We apologise for this". This followed an earlier estate agent email on 26/8/25 saying seller had signed the contract papers and they had answered the additional queries. Tolhurst didn't tell me about this error
I chased Tolhurst on 6/9/25 as we'd had an email on Monday 1/9/25 from the estate agent that papers had been sent previous week.
I was never advised whether the detailed information I had been asked to provide was satisfactory.
17/9/25 A Tolhurst email quoted to us from the estate agent implied that I was holding the process up as the deposit is awaited. I had not been asked for the deposit yet. We hadn't yet exchanged contracts.
8/10/25 Tolhurst criticised me for not having yet paid the deposit when I still hadn't been asked for it, even when I had previously pointed out that all monies were ready and pushing for a completion date. Tolhurst did not use that as a prompt to say pay it. Indeed an earlier Tolhurst letter had said that they would separately contact me asking for monies - never by email. I had merely adhered to that advice.
9/10/25 It was only at 0759 that we were asked by Lesley Well of Tolhurst to pay balance by close of play that day. And that was after an email from me at 0656 on the same morning, asking how payment is made. In the end I ended up paying a huge deposit (73.2%) actually before exchange
10/10/25 - completion day. Tolhurst forgot to attach the final bill in email where they said it's attached.
I m still considering whether to seek a partial reduction in fees. I daren’t hold back monies before as completion would have been delayed.

Buying our first home was one of the most exciting but also nerve-wracking experiences we've ever been through — and we honestly couldn’t have done it without the incredible support from Martin Tolhurst Solicitors.
From day one, Abdul Muttalib was calm, knowledgeable, and completely reassuring. As our solicitor, he took the time to explain each stage of the conveyancing process in detail, always making sure we understood what was happening and what to expect next. He was extremely thorough and meticulous with the legal side, and we felt fully confident that nothing was being overlooked. No question ever felt too small, and his professional yet approachable manner made a real difference in putting us at ease.
A massive thank you as well to his wonderful support team — Amy, Abbie, and Lorna — who were all incredibly friendly, efficient, and on the ball throughout. Their communication was excellent; they were quick to respond to emails and phone calls, kept us regularly updated without us having to chase, and made sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. It was clear that they genuinely cared about our experience and were just as excited as we were to help us get across the finish line.
What we appreciated most was how personal the service felt. Despite how busy the property market can be, we never felt like just another case. Everyone we dealt with took time and care to make sure our first home purchase was handled properly — and it truly was.
Thanks to Abdul and the team, we completed on time, with minimal stress, and are now happily settling into our new home. We honestly couldn’t recommend Martin Tolhurst Solicitors enough, especially for fellow first-time buyers looking for a team that is professional, responsive, and genuinely supportive from start to finish.
Thank you all so much!

I appointed Martin Tolhurst to handle the sale of my rental property as they were recommended by the estate agent I was using. They got the job done eventually but when I put my residential property up for sale also with the same estate agent I did not want to use Martin Tolhurst again.
They main reason for this was a distinct lack of a personal touch. They have an office 5 mins drive from my house so to try to expedite things instead of emailing I decided to visit the office instead. On the 3 occasions I did so I did not meet or get to speak to the solicitor who was handling my case. Despite the fact that I was paying them for this service. I felt I was not important enough for them to get up off their office chair and come to speak to me for a moment. Instead they sent a pair of very young ladies to talk to me who looked like they'd left school no more than 6 months ago. They of course knew nothing of my case so spent time walking up and down the stairs relaying messages back and forth. On one occasion of signing the contract my witness initially signed in the buyers witness place. I got him to to sign in the correct place also and took the contract to the office to see if it was acceptable or would I need a replacement. After the minions came back from upstairs they produced a new contract for me to sign. I said I would take it away and return it later that day. The senior minion replied if I signed it then and there, then she could witness it. This struck me as odd because I didn't know the girl and she didn't know me. She didn't even ask me for any ID. Not wanting to delay matters further, I just signed it there and then. She then took it away and presumably signed as a witness later. I also seemed to have an issue with the boiler installation certificate which wad causing a delay. It turned out the buyer wasn't interested in this as was intending to replace it anyway. We both emailed our respective solicitors to drop the matter and move on. I received no reply to this. So overall a disappointing experience and not one I would recommend.

Completed the house sale competently. There was room for improvement over certain aspects, but there was good comms all the way through and everything needed was done.

It’s hard to put into words how grateful I am for everything Hannah has done for me. When I first came to her, I was emotionally drained, overwhelmed, and unsure how I’d ever get through what was ahead. I was coming out of a difficult marriage and facing a long, drawn-out legal battle over finances that stretched on for 18 painful months.
From the moment Hannah took on my case, I felt a shift. She didn’t just manage the legal side with total professionalism and expertise, she truly understood what I was up against. My ex used every bullying tactic possible to wear me down, but Hannah never once lost her composure. She remained calm, steady, and in control throughout, no matter how aggressive or unreasonable things became.
Her quiet strength gave me strength. She saw through the manipulation, stood firm when it mattered most, and never allowed intimidation or delay tactics to derail the process. She protected my interests fiercely, and I always felt that she had my back, not just legally, but emotionally too.
This wasn’t just a legal battle, it was a fight to reclaim my life, my voice, and my future. And thanks to Hannah, I walked away with all three.
If you're going through a high-conflict divorce, I can't recommend Hannah highly enough. She is not only a brilliant solicitor, she's a fierce advocate and a deeply compassionate professional. I’ll be forever grateful for her.

I dealt with Giles at Martin Tolhurst and he was brilliant. Giles has been a huge support for my family during a complex time, providing great information, actioning requests with a quick turn around and no matter how long between communications, was always up to speed on the case and updates. Thank you for all your help. Wouldn’t use anyone else now.

If I could I’d give 10 stars. Cannot rate this solicitor highly enough. Particularly Gemma, Ellie, Nicola and Anita at the gillingham branch. These ladies worked tirelessly right up until our move date. We were kept in the loop every step of the way with everything being explained to us in simpler terms. Moving and paperwork can be quite daunting but these ladies took the time to break things down and answer any questions we had.
They went above and beyond on our move day as we experienced a blip with our mortgage lender. At no fault of Martin tolhurst they took responsibility of the problem and made sure we moved on that day even working later than office hours. Constantly chasing for us and calling us every 30 minutes with an update. The compassion and care shown by these ladies was second to none. We cannot thank you enough for everything you did. We hope to never move again but if we do we know we’re to come for our conveyancing.

Tolhurst’s conveyancing team transformed a daunting two-property sale into a seamless experience. Alicia’s constant reassurance and swift answers put my mind at ease, while Lesley’s clear, stage-by-stage updates kept me fully informed and in control. With just one final transaction to go, I’m confident they’ll deliver the same exceptional efficiency.

We instructed Martin Tolhurst Solicitors for both the sale of our property and the purchase of a new-build, and we were very pleased with the service throughout.
The team was consistently professional, responsive, and helpful at every stage. They explained each part of the process clearly, including the extra complexities involved in buying a new-build and dealing with a deed of variation. We always felt they had our best interests in mind.
Even when things became stressful and time-sensitive, the team remained calm, reliable, and efficient. Communication was clear and timely, and we were never left unsure about what was happening or what the next step would be.
We would confidently recommend Martin Tolhurst to anyone buying or selling.
A special thanks to Abdul Mutallib, Amy and rest of the team for their hard work and support!

I would highly recommend this solicitor. Our move experience was made all the less stressful due to the dedicated service that we received throughout, both for the sale and purchase of our old and new property. The team at Martin Tolhurst always responded to all our enquiries within 1-2 hours, (on occasion out of normal office hours). Although telephone calls were not answered immediately, our backup E Mails and voice messages were responded to in the time detailed above by either E-Mail or via a direct call. Charlotte, Abbie and the team were friendly, professional and attentive to all our needs throughout the sale and purchase periods. I would use the firm again without question.
