Clever application and improving

Clever application and improving. I now use it everyday. I have started moving money from one account to another via the app but mostly use it to obtain an instant understanding of overall balance and transactions across many accounts. I don't use it for budgeting yet. Customer service were very responsive when I had a question. Definitely would recommend.

Excellent Finance Tool

I have used Money dashboard for several months. It is an excellent way to track and plan expenditure, saving many hours of trawling through bank and credit card reports.

MoneyDashboard best of the bunch!

After doing the usual research I chose Money Dashboard to help manage finances and family budgets.

Classic: Easy setup and imported historic transactions across different accounts and providers which is key for immediate insights and value, although it could not connect to my saving account. Initial categorisation was pretty good, however, there were 170 uncategorised transactions which I had to manually correct but the software does allow you to apply to all the other similar entries so reduces administrative overhead.

The web app is MUCH better than the IOS app as the web app offers chart drill down and much better functionality overall the IOS app in very limited by comparison but fine for quickly checking balances and budgets.

The planning feature again is a key requirement for me and I can replicate my usual monthly activity by importing individual income and expenses. For some reason the balance was way out so I will have to try and figure out what is skewing the numbers.

Neon: doesn’t work with NatWest (no historic data) & other reviews would indicate a common experience with other banks. MoneyDashboard clearly state that it’s a WIP but are still promoting Neon as a capable product. It’s not, it’s really a beta release and causing frustration.

Classic is almost the perfect tool I do have concerns that it will be retired or not developed in favour of Neon which would be a shame.

I have been looking for a replacement for MS Money for a long time and this is the closest I have found. Don't bother with Neon, at least not yet and use the classic web app (online) to benefit from the full functionality and financial insights.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your feedback. Firstly if you're having problems with Natwest transactions on Neon please contact our support team so they can assist further. We're continuing to develop new functionality for Neon, and while this is our priority, Classic will certainly remain open for our older users as we appreciate there isn't yet feature parity between Classic and Neon.

Moneydashboard used to be a great app

Moneydashboard used to be a great app. Now my key accounts, Metrobank and Marcus will not connect although I can still use it for Barclaycard and HSBC. The Neon App is a major backward step, categories didn't transfer and sub categories don't even exist. I have all but stopped using it. currently looking for an alternative.

Hi David,

Sorry you are having problems with Neon. Unfortunately it's not possible for us to support Metrobank or Marcus at the moment as they haven't provided Open Banking APIs to allow us to connect. We're continuing to develop Neon, and there are plans to bring in sub-categories soon.

I loved Money Dashboard Classic but hate Neon

I loved Money Dashboard Classic, but I can't say the same about the new Neon version!

First of all, I had to set up all my categories and budgets again, when I'd spent ages getting them exactly how they worked for me.

Second, I no longer seem to be able to see how much all my budgets add up to and how much I've spent total out of my total budget? It says I have "£X" amount to spend, where "£X" is everything in my accounts, including my savings. No, I do not have all that to spend. I just want to see how much of my monthly budget I have left to spend.

Third, the Budgets are no longer a tab at the bottom and are hard to find.

Useless and hard to navigate now. Will be finding another app to manage my budgets. I've heard good things about You Need A Budget.

Hi Ollie,

Thanks for your feedback. Currently, not all account types are available for connection through Open Banking. As an example, you may not be able to connect certain savings accounts or ISA's as they don't currently come under the PSD 2 legislation for Open Banking. As Marcus deals with savings accounts they are not obliged to provide an Open Banking API at this time. Although some banks do support some of their savings accounts this is at their discretion. We don't have any information about plans Marcus may have for providing an Open Banking connection.

Updates

Hi,

Love the App. Much better than some I have recently tried. However, it would be nice if there was:

1. Split records
2. Edit tags (name, colour, icon)
3. Sub categories
4 Overviews in Mastercard (categories)
5. Have a cash record
6. For some reason it lists multi entries of the
same transaction(s) in D/D's? It's not poss
to delete.

I look forward to new updates! Soon!!

Thanks,

Shaun (not my actual a/c name)

Have used classic for a couple of years…no category import!?!

Have used classic for a couple of years and it's been really useful. I understand why the move to Neon has been made by the company but having spent AGES setting up and fine tuning the very important categories in classic, replicating that in Neon is probably a bridge too far. I can't believe there's no "import" function for categories and category hierarchies into Neon, seems such a simple thing to introduce(?). Also missing some key reporting and dashboard functionality and don't want to migrate over until I see that this will be added to Neon.

Also there doesn't seem to be a hierarchy for categories which is ESSENTIAL, eh?!

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. My opinion is that you've launched Neon too early. Virtually every post & response refers to missing and important functionality that "is coming soon". There's very little if anything I can do with Neon at the moment that I need to do. I also need capabilities over 2 to 3 years so if I switch to Neon I'll have to use both systems to cover this timespan.

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback. Unfortunately it is not possible to migrate Classic accounts and data to Neon, and furthermore importing tag hierarchies as you suggest is in fact particularly complex. The tagging system works completely differently in Neon, and part of the reason for developing the new app is to address the unwieldly and complicated tagging structure in Classic, so the last thing we would want to do is import this again as is.

We'll be bringing in more tagging functionality soon, including sub-tags and more flexibility with editing tag, along with more reporting functionality and we'll keep you updated on progress.

Good speedy budgeting but could be much better

After just creating an account I have realised that there is a lot of functionality not available which i thought would be. Having now read previous reviews and feedback I have seen that developers are working on updates as neon is a new product, and i will wait to see what appears, would be good to have an estimated date of new functionality however. Having used You Need a Budget previously I feel i had more control of my finances but it was time consuming due to having to manually upload transactions and it was costly.

What would be a great benefit on the dashboard would be:

1. Option to Categorise accounts, to enable account filtering on the overview. i.e. i have a joint and single accounts, if i filter out the joint accounts on the overview page I still see all the budgets for the joint and single accounts so don’t get a sense of what my own separate spending is.

2. Ability to split transactions, I have 1 transaction that should be split across 3 different budgets but at the moment i can only categorise the transaction which does not reflect truly into my budget.

3. An annual budget option or a choice when creating the monthly budget for the unspent funds to be added to the rolling budget amount. 2 examples - i save monthly for house insurance, instead of putting into a savings pot i would like to see on the budget the £20 allocated adding up each month but not being spent. Also if i budget £40 a month for clothes but only spend £20 one month i would like £20 to remain in the budget. This allows me to see my budget at the bottom of the page and not have to move money from various saving pots.

Has potential but a few features I would consider obvious requirements are missing.
I can't have my "month" start when my pay goes in - since that's how I organise my finances it makes the usage data fairly hard to use in any practical way.
A portion of my regular income is in cash and there doesn't seem to be any way to add this or add a cash transaction.
Some of my banks aren't compatible with the app - I don't seem to be able to add my Danske bank account or my preloaded revolut card

Since I can't include all my financial activity it's hard to use it, but it has great potential if these issues are addressed

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your feedback. The facility to change the 'month start' date has been in from the beginning and you can set this (your paycycle) by going to the filter options (funnel icon, top right) on the Home page.
Offline Sources accounts can be set up to track balances for things like unsupported accounts, cash in hand, the value of assets, etc, but I'm afraid it's not possible to manually enter or upload transaction data for them. It's something our developers are considering but there are no definite plans at the moment.
We're currently looking at supporting Danske bank, and if you are having problems connecting to Revolut please contact our support team at support@moneydashboard.com so we can assist further.

Hi Fabienne,

Unfortunately due to the PSD2/Open Banking regulations we are no longer able or permitted to connect to Marcus accounts via our old data provider Yodlee. Being able to support Marcus again is dependent on them having an Open Banking API in place, and I'm afraid we don't yet have any information on this.

This was a great tool for us to plan and manage spending - once we went through the pain of setting it up and sorting through and allocating spends to the right categories. Now, suddenly, all my historic transactions (> 90 days) are duplicated! I do not have the patience (even during lockdown....) to go and find and remove all of these without a guarantee they wont just come back again.

Have used and loved this software for a couple of years now but it’s no longer a viable product.

After buying a new phone and downloading the app I was constantly being met with incorrect password I was slightly confused, turns out they have brought out a new app and requires you to setup a new account.

Having setup the said new account and begun using the app, I am not sure of its purpose, its featureless and my own banks app offers more functionality including the ability to collate accounts from other banks? It’s truly a shade of its former self. I appreciate this is an early release, but it’s nowhere near ready for public use yet.

Even if fully updated to the standards of the classic app, it’s not something I would consider using. The fact it’s a new account means the years of data I have collated and carefully managed all this time is gone, gone just like that! I can off course continue using the existing setup, but it’s clear the app is the new priority and the old software will no longer be developed further.

Time to look for an alternative, absolutely gutted as this has become an integral part of my financial lifestyle :)

3 stars but only out of the love and use its provided me over the years.

Hi James M.

As you mentioned, we're keeping Classic available for existing users so you will continue to have access to your historic transactions and existing functionality. There is no obligation to move across to Neon.

The reason for developing the new Neon app was two fold: 1) the Classic app is built on ageing technology that does not enable fast development or scalability and 2) the financial landscape has changed massively in 10 years and it was felt the functionality in Classic was not best set up to deal with changing demands.

Neon is absolutely a work in progress and there is still lots of functionality to be added, but user retention on Neon is already better than our Classic version. Classic required a lot of work for users to set up and maintain it; we're aiming to avoid this with Neon to make it more widely accessible.

If you have specific feedback on what you're missing with Neon we'd love to hear it. Neon support can be contacted at help@moneydashboard.com

Used for 3 years, now looking for an alternative.

Used for 3 years, now looking for an alternative. Such a shame.

I like the fact that all my accounts were in once place, saving time with personal finances and having a good sense of where my money is, and how much I can save and spend.

Lately, the company has released a neon version. It looks and functions well, but sadly is missing some elementary features such as personalised self-created tags, or even a running balance on each account. Because you can't create your own tags, it is difficult to draw up budgets. You can create budgets (on the phone app, though not on the web version), but these budgets can't be personalised to individual areas of spending. This naturally doesn’t distinguish between "wants" vs. "needs." For example, My wife and I used to have pocket money each month, where we could spend it on our own hobbies- not possible with the neon. This is akin to accountancy software unable to create new nominal ledger codes - instead you are forced into lumping funds into big accounts. I no longer can separate my income into 'my salary','wife's salary','self employment income' and 'dividends', now it's just all under 'Income.' (not good!).

Secondly is the lack of a planner for one-off spends. For example, I would like to know if I can spend some money on a new iPad. Original app: go to planner and add this - beautiful charts. Neon: nothing. Neon seems to suit the individual who is out of control of their finances and needs to be told how much money is left over after bills to spend happily. The important concepts of "wants" vs "needs", planning to save and good budgeting are not available in the Neon app's design and methods. The app reflects more a headless-chicken approach to personal finances - promoting instant-gratification spending with money spare after you've paid your bills.

I’m really disappointed. What seemed like such a good company is fading in my opinions. The original app was good for the financial novice all the way to the fully qualified accountant.

So why can't I just stick to the original app and not worry about Neon? (This is where I really think the company has really shot itself in the foot). By releasing the neon version it marks a statement that they will no longer make improvements to the original app. (though they do promise that it will be supported). This intentional decision, followed by a poorer new app, has sadly guaranteed me leaving.

EDIT: Money Dashboard say there are new features being added to Neon. - but why didn't they delay the launch until these new (in my opinion, essential) features were added?

Hi obliss1.

We decided to build a new app from scratch because our original app was becoming increasingly difficult to develop upon, meaning our ability to deliver new features was really restricted. We know our 'Classic' app users feel very passionately about it and have spent a long time personalising the set up. We didn't want you to lose this set up which is why we continue to support Classic.

That being said we want to develop an app that is more accessible and has wider appeal, which is why we're developing Neon. Neon has got a long backlog of features that need added to it and the important thing is we can develop this quickly. We have already delivered the custom categories you mention in your review. We're releasing new versions of the app frequently with new functionality, so hopefully you'll start to see the features you're looking for.

I will pass on your feedback to the Product team.
