Check your receipt!
Last Friday, while on vacation, we had dinner at Mormor's Landkøkken. It was our last evening before leaving Hejlsminde, so we wanted to go to a restaurant right in town to avoid having to drive too far.
The food itself was good and the portions were generous.
Unfortunately, however, the bill was incorrect. There were two of us, and we each had a serving of fish and chips, a glass of white wine, and a side salad to share. However, we were charged for two additional dishes as well as two beers that we didn’t order. As I said, there were just the two of us. We generally don’t drink beer at all because we don’t like it. Sure, we were hungry, but two people can’t possibly eat four dishes.
Unfortunately, we didn’t notice it until the next day when I checked the credit card app. My husband had paid with his card that evening and isn’t very familiar with the Danish currency, which is why he didn’t notice it right away.
When we got home, I contacted the restaurant by email, explained the situation, and sent photos of our meal and a photo of the receipt. The only response I received was asking if we were still in Hejlsminde. After that, nothing more. When I followed up again today, I received an extremely rude and insolent reply from the restaurant. They said they were closing the case because they don’t issue refunds based on photos.
That’s just poor management. Mistakes can happen - no question about it. Presumably, other people were sitting at the table before us who had just eaten those two extra dishes and drunk those two beers, and the order wasn’t logged out. But instead of finding a solution, all you get after asking several times is a snappy reply. That’s poor customer service and suggests a trap for tourists. “We can’t come back anytime soon anyway, so they might as well treat us badly and rip us off.”
It’s not just about 5 euros, but a total of 55 euros that we were overcharged. That’s a lot of money, and it’s outrageous that the overpaid amount isn’t being refunded. Instead, we only received a rude email from the restaurant’s owner.
So we won’t be recommending this place - and a word of caution to all tourists: check your bill.
