An upsetting experience

Following my previous Trustpilot review, I received a phone call from Motor Angel that I found deeply upsetting and wholly unprofessional.

The individual who called identified himself as Dane Walters (Customer Success Manager). From the outset, his manner was rude and dismissive. When I asked about the status of my refund, the tone of the call became hostile. I was told that if I were to “take this further” through the courts, my refund would not be issued. This came across to me as an attempt to intimidate me into dropping the matter.

In addition to this, several snarky and belittling remarks were made, which left me feeling that my concerns were being mocked rather than addressed. The overall impression was that my vulnerability as a customer was being exploited rather than handled with any professionalism or care.

This call was not about resolving an issue - it felt like damage control through pressure and humiliation after I spoke publicly about my experience.

If this is how Motor Angel responds to complaints and refund requests, I would strongly urge others to think very carefully before dealing with this company or MotorEasy.

Due to the conduct I experienced and the ongoing refusal to resolve this matter appropriately, I will be seeking to raise this case with an independent consumer journalist to ensure wider public awareness.

Motor Easy (Motor Angel/ASDA Warranty)…

Motor Easy (Motor Angel/ASDA Warranty/Asda Motoring) markets its warranty as comprehensive, but my experience suggests otherwise. When you actually need to claim, the extensive "what’s not covered" section is used to deny all repairs—especially those you'd expect to be essential, like clutch or flywheel issues. The burden is on the customer to prove any fault isn’t pre-existing, and only actual failed parts are covered (recommended replacements, even if critical, are excluded). In my case, a motorway breakdown left me stranded, but my claim was still rejected on technicalities: not calling Motor Easy first, “wear and tear” exclusions, and the refusal to cover recommended associated parts. Despite long lists of “covered” components, almost any scenario can be excluded due to restrictive small print or discretionary decisions. The gap between what’s promised and what’s delivered is simply too wide for me to recommend this plan.

Beware of constant phone calls!

This is a sister company of motoreasy.co.uk.

Check Companies House. Both Motorangel and MotorEasy are from the same address and have the same 'directors'. So please stop telling trustpilot to remove my review as 'you think I got the wrong company'.

Beware of harassing phone calls from different numbers!

I made the mistake of completing an online quotation for GAP insurance. Having decided not to proceed AND TICKING ALL THE OPTIONS NOT TO BE CONTACTED, I now find myself bombarded with sales calls harassing me into purchasing a policy.

I do not have a '8 digit reference number' and I did not open an account with you at the time of the quotation.

And another point I'd like to bring to your attention. Why is it when you ring me, my phone flags you up as "SUSPECTED SCAM"? Is there something you're not telling us?

Motor Angels are a third party to…

Motor Angels are a third party to Warranty assist!
Gearbox barrings, Hyundia Tuscan 2018.

I purchased a second-hand Hyundai Tucson 2018 last year and decided to buy a £600 Gold warranty from Car Planet, hoping it would provide peace of mind in case of any issues. Unfortunately, my experience with Warranty Assist has been far from satisfactory.

Recently, the gearbox bearings on my vehicle failed. Despite having the warranty, I have been experiencing significant stress and hassle over the past eight weeks trying to get this issue resolved. To my dismay, my claim was denied on the grounds that I did not complete a gearbox service in March 2024. However, this requirement is not mentioned in the maintenance manual. I am certain that even if the car had been serviced, the vehicle would have failed due to wear and tear, and the company would still have found a way to not honour the warranty.

Additionally, my vehicle has only completed 52,000 miles. It is unreasonable to expect a vehicle of this age and mileage to have such a significant failure. The purpose of purchasing a warranty is to cover unexpected repairs, and it is clear that Warranty Assist is unwilling to honour this agreement.

I believe it would be more prudent for customers to save the £600 and use it towards repair costs directly, rather than dealing with the frustration and inconvenience of a warranty that does not provide the promised coverage.

My experience has left me with no faith in this company’s services. I have left my warranty number and would be interested to know what their response will be. I expect it will be something along the lines of, “I’m really sorry, but you didn’t have the gearbox serviced as per the T&Cs, so we cannot honour the claim.” Drivers, I’ll let you decide.

Dear Mr Singh,

Thank you for your 8th review regarding your claim.

When purchasing a £20 monthly warranty you chose our value lite plan rather than the recommended full plan for your 8 year old Kia Ceed. The Lite plan costs around half the price of the full plan as it requires vehicles to breakdown at the roadside and require recovery as part of a valid claim.

You reported a fault, noting that you were hearing odd noises from the vehicle but the vehicle had not broken down, so we were unable to open a claim in line with the terms of the lite policy you chose. You then stated you would drive the vehicle "all night long until it breaks" and were advised you would need to get a diagnosis and rectify the fault which your warranty could not cover.

2 weeks and 4,400 miles later you opened a further claim for the same fault, which was declined as the fault had been exacerbated by being driven on in a known state of failure, as you had advised you would do.

No warranty can cover damage relating to known faults being driven on in a state of failure, nor can they cover faults specifically excluded by the level of cover chosen. Covering faults excluded by the warranty is not fair and equitable to other members, who must pay through increased premiums.

Regards,
Rory

STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAM!!!

STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAM!!!

Update and answer to your comment:
Everything you are saying is a lie and has nothing to do with the problem! The oil leak you are referring to has nothing to do with the gearbox problem so do not even mention. The gearbox doesn’t have worn out plates or anything in that matter that is worn out in a 60k mile car and we have the proof for that and you will be receiving it very shortly. So the MECHANICAL FAULT of the gearbox came from the gearbox COOLER which is now changed as well as the gearbox. Also the leak from the engine is fixed now which has no relation to the gearbox problem but just so you know. So everything in your report from your “independent” inspector is made up and simply a lie so you do not have to cover the claim. The specialist garage- Tom Lenthall will provide a report of everything they fixed and this will be sent to you along with our bill and they also confirmed that they had cancelled their work with you after our case because of the scam you do.

We had an extended warranty through MOTOREASY which hand over the repairs to MOTOR ANGEL. So we had the engine light on and we called instantly they arranged for a diagnostic with Halfords and we went there as they were not sure where the problem is so we had another diagnostic arranged by them with another service and the same happened there so we insisted they arrange a third diagnostic but with a specialist, after a month of waiting our car actually broke down and the gearbox went into limp mode, we finally had our third diagnostic with Jaguar Specialist and we were told that we will need a new gearbox and quoted £10k for it. So MOTOR ANGEL said they will need to send over an independent advisor who needs to determine if this claim can be approved. SO after a week no one contacted us but we had to call them to see what has happened and we were told that they cannot cover our claim due as this independent advisor decided that this is wear and tear situation which is the only thing they do not cover (WHAT A SUPRISE). So we called the specialist that diagnosed out car and they laughed at the reason and said that a car on 60k miles cannot have wear and tear in the gearbox and that their advisor did not even spoke to them to see what their opinion is. So we called MOTOR ANGEL again to ask them how can they make such a decision on the opinion of someone and not on FACTS. So they said if we opened the gearbox to investigate and it is not wear and tear they will reconsider, but we had to pay for the investigation. We were more than happy to do that and when we called the specialist that had our car to check how long this will take they said that they have been contacted from MOTOR ANGEL to arrange the investigation and the specialists have asked MOTOR ANGEL if it turns out that it is not wear and tear which the yare confident is not will they cover our new gearbox and MOTOR ANGEL replied 'we doubt it' .... soooo we decided that we are not spending 1k on investigation when they will come up with something else so they do not pay. So now we need to fix our car at our own expense as they for sure will not cover anything and they left us without our car for over 2 months just playing us around and sending us to garages that have no idea what to do with JAGUAR make. THEY ARE SCAMMERS THAT TAKE THE MONTHLY PAYMENTS BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING BACK THEY MOVE THE EARTH AND LIE SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT. I WILL BE REPORTING THEM EVERYWHERE FOR SACM AND WILL WRITE THE THE MOTOR OMBUDSMAN AS COMPANIES LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT EXIST. JUST LOOK AT THEIR REVIEWS AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS IS NOT LEGIT COMPANY.

Dear Denisa Rankova,

Re: pre existing gearbox fault.

In December last year you took out a warranty for your vehicle which had an EML light on the dash in March this year.

The the garage found the vehicle required a full gearbox replacement.

After investigation, it was noted that your vehicle had a reported oil leak last year at its MOT test, prior to you taking the policy out.

An independent inspector confirmed that 'We also noted an excessive oil leakage from the underside of the vehicle which requires further investigation, although if the vehicle has been utilized in this condition, it is highly likely that the early stages of engine damage have started to occur although may not be immediately evident.'

In addition, your vehicle has worn clutch friction plates, which has developed over time through the use of the clutch.

No warranty covers pre existing damage or worn clutches, to do so would be inequitable for other members, and result in inflated premiums.

I thought those comment was just words…

I thought those comment was just words until I try to use my warranty, what I realised was that when we buy a policy we don’t always read those little writing terms and conditions and that’s when they take advantage, I had my gearbox gone on my Range Rover all under warranty kept up to date with servicing and mot and then when you start your claim they send a inspector to inspect the gearbox that’s where they find a way not to pay you cos that part inside the gearbox called dog clucth is worn by wear and tear and it’s not sudden so it’s not covered anything goes wrong they agree at first then they find a way not to pay you. I will never use them again I will pay little extra and have dealer warranty trust me it’s worth it.

This company should be AVOIDED at all…

This company should be AVOIDED at all cost, I am a single parent of a disabled child and looked thoroughly for a warranty that would cover me for any eventuality, got a quote from motoreasy, then loads of calls from there sales people to try and get me to buy, which I was going to, they went through everything that was covered and advised I'd need to take my car for a health check, which I did and passed no problem. Few weeks ago I had a transmission fault warning come on dash, called motoreasy and it was booked in for following week, my car was parked in drive since then and then transported by rac to garage. I took out the policy that covered wear and tear as I was advised to by sales rep, my car now needs new gearbox which they won't pay for as they say it wasn't a sudden breakdown, well firstly IT WAS a sudden breakdown as I'd had no issues before and my car had 2 diagnostics before this that showed nothing, secondly if it wasn't a sudden breakdown it has to be due to wear and tear, which I was sold. I appealed the decision and they still say no. So I will be taking this to the motor ombudsman and running a story in paper as well as leaving reviews everywhere I can to stop more people being scammed, cos that's all they are is scammers. I was even willing to contribute to repair but no, this company should and will be named and shamed. Also once u buy it u won't get to speak to anyone, its always someone will call u back but never do.
I will also be requesting a copy of the sales call under the foi.
UPDATE. I am now getting my car recovered to another garage at my cost which is £2000 cheaper to repair, motoreasy say they will inspect it again when stripped, but I'm not holding my breathe, I even offered to contribute.
ITS NOT A SUDDEN BREAKDOWN so if its not sudden it must be wear and tear WHICH I HAVE COVER FOR but still no joy.

Warranty inspection road test not noticed
Wear and tear
Car had 2 previous diagnostic done by motoreasy that no transmission fault showed.

I will update as and when things happen.

Dear Miss Macdonald,

In January this year, you purchased a Plan B policy for your 9 year old 89,000 miles Ford Kuga.

You attended a visual health check, which identified your vehicle needed front and rear discs and pads renewing.

2 days after the health check you reported an EML light on the dash.

The vehicle had a DPF blocked beyond repair and issue with the fuel vaporizer, both faults that are not listed under your plan and pre-existing your policy inception.

We refunded the diagnosis fee you paid as a gesture of goodwill.

3 weeks later, you reported an issue with the gearbox and we paid for an independent inspector to assess the vehicle.

They stated that the ‘concern on this transmission type is not unexpected or considered to be a sudden breakage.’ And ‘taking into consideration the short amount of time elapsed since inception, we consider the condition would have been developing at that point.’

Unfortunately, your vehicle clearly has a number of pre-existing faults at the policy inception. No warranty is able to cover pre existing faults.

Due to the condition of your car, we do not believe your policy is fit for purpose so offered a full refund which you refused.

Warranties do not exist to fix cars with pre existing problems, we believe we have treated you fairly and equitably and have already offered goodwill assistance despite your short time on cover. We cannot cover failures that are specifically excluded as this pushes up premiums for other members.

They don't want to pay out make excuse after excuse i and the garage I'm using have been chasing them for well over a week and I have now given up and I'm going to have to pay for the work to be done. Told the guy I'm cancelling and he wasn't even bothered said ok sorry to hear. Most of the reviews on here are fake the I'm using said there's always issues with warranties not paying out won't be using anything like this again wouldn't recommend to anyone and I'm still waiting for a call back from a supervisor who is looking at my notes.

AVOID THIS SCAM!

AVOID THIS SCAM!
I bought a Peugeot 308 (2017 Model) about 3 months ago from a dealer with a warranty from Warranty Assist ( They handle the repairs through Motor Angel ). The engine management light came up couple of weeks back. Took it to a garage that this scam company found and the garage told the Oil Sump needs to be replaced and it would cost about £1300. They sent an engineer to confirm this and the engineer wrote a scam document saying this problem was a developing issue when the warranty was started and declined the claim. This is just so unfair as the part is clearly covered under warranty and they find excuses to decline the claims. WE SHOULD ALL GO TO MOTOR OMBUDSMAN and Report this Scam!

Review Feb 2021

EDIT: Since an employee at Motor Angel/Warranty Assist has replied, for the benefit of all customers I have edited this review and would like to comment as follows:

1.The report from the independent third party states that the condition of two of the tyres MAY have had an adverse effect with regard to the gearbox issue…. The specialist gearbox company that now have my vehicle to carry out said repairs have confirmed this is highly unlikely to have negatively impacted any gearbox, let alone a high end vehicle.

2. No consumer would buy a car that had a pre-existing gearbox issue and there was no evidence of said gearbox light having previously appeared in the cars diagnostic report.

3.I truly hope my honest review below coupled with Motor Angels/Warranty Assist’s reply together with the overwhelming amount of poor reviews of this company on trust pilot will help future consumers make a smart decision when purchasing any vehicle warranty.

Original review:

I very rarely write reviews but after an appalling experience with this warranty company, I thought I would make an exception.

I might add I have taken out extended warranties on all second hand cars I have brought in the past and never experienced an issue like this before.

They point blank refuse to pay out. I had a gearbox issue for my vehicle and it has barely done 35,000 miles and is a high end vehicle…….the claim got refused because the issue is wear and tear and expected for a vehicle of this age and mileage…… 35,000 miles and four years old…….I’m sure we can all agree that isn’t an old car nor excessive mileage for a gearbox issue.

They get an independent company to review the quote from the garage and vehicle and this is the document that they will rely on if you take the matter to court.

Once again, I cannot stress enough to avoid this company! You would be much better off setting the money on fire instead of paying for a years warranty, and this is a gold warranty that I have!

If you are as unfortunate as me, take the matter to the Motor Ombudsman and take out your own independent review of the repairs that need to be carried out with a third party so you have your own report to rely on in court.

Worst company I’ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

Hayley,

You claimed for a gearbox malfunction warning on the dash.

We sent an independent inspector out who found that both front tyres were ‘in extremely poor state and not in a legal and roadworthy condition’

They also stated they were ‘heavily cracked, deteriorated and perished’

The issue found was in the torque convertor which was due to general in-service fatigue.

The fault was emphasised by the condition of your tyres. The fault would have begun before policy inception.

Unfortunately, we cannot cover pre-existing claims as this would push up premiums for other members.

Disgusting Company

EDIT: Update, have been advised to go to the Ombudsman and speak to a solicitor, as the horn is an MOT requirement.

Took my car into local garage because horn is not working. Received a text message from Motor Angel, saying that "We have authorised the workshop to start the repair on your, etc.." I then get an email from Motor Angel telling me the part is not covered. Basically, anything that might fail or any parts that are expensive will not be covered. My policy is a Gold one, I hate to think what little is covered on a bronze!!
Clearly, everything that is not likely to fail will be covered. Study the policy carefully. My repair will come to £929 but because I have a policy with them, I SAVED £70!!!! WHOOPY F***ING DO. What a bunch of scammers but of course, they ARE an insurance company and will always find a loophole not to pay. Next port of call is Vauxhall. Avoid Motor Angel and Warranty Assist. I purchased the car from Midland Sports and Prestige who must have known the horn was not working plus a few other faults that fortunately for me, they had to rectify under the '14 day cooling off' period I had. I am utterly convinced that the MOT was dodgy, as the horn is an MOT requirement. Let's spread the word and see if we can do these vile companies some damage. I will also be putting the whole charade on Facebook and my two websites. P.S. WE RECOMMEND that the following failures.....!!!!! LOL

Dear Grant

We are sorry, but based on your warranty terms, we recommend that the following failures are not covered under your warranty:

Your Column Integrated Module faulty (CIM) problem is not covered under your warranty because as per 'Warranty Summary' Only Components (Parts) listed are covered and 'What this Warranty Covers' Any component not specifically mentioned is not covered.

Yours sincerely,
