Disappointing Stay – Serious Hygiene and Safety Issues Not Properly Addressed
We were really looking forward to our stay at Pirin Meadows, but unfortunately, the experience fell far below expectations, especially considering we were travelling with a toddler and a dog.
Upon arrival, we were met with a significant ant infestation in the kitchen area. Ants were visibly running across cupboards, into cracks around the fridge and freezer, and even over cutlery and plates. Shockingly, we even found ants inside the kettle. This made the kitchen completely unfit for use and raised serious health and safety concerns for our family.
We reported the issue to reception immediately and were told someone would be sent to investigate. After returning from a local supermarket—where we had to purchase our own cleaning supplies—we were told no one had come to the lodge. When we followed up again, we were informed that the cleaners had gone home and we would have to manage it ourselves. This response was extremely disappointing and not what you expect from a place marketed as family-friendly.
Due to the unsanitary condition of the kitchen, we were forced to eat out instead of preparing meals at the lodge, which significantly cut into our holiday budget—something we had not planned for. The £40 bar tab offered as compensation didn’t come close to covering these unexpected expenses.
While the infestation was eventually treated, the ants returned just five days later, showing that the treatment was not effective.
In addition to the hygiene issues, the children’s play area was not monitored, and our toddler was forced out by older, rough-playing children, despite it being clearly marked as suitable for ages 5 and under. This made it unsafe and unusable for younger children.
We were also woken up by teenagers banging on caravans and running away late at night, adding to the disruption and giving the impression that the site is poorly supervised.
While the manager did respond, the overall experience was stressful, unhygienic, and disappointing. We had been planning to return to Cornwall next year and had considered rebooking at Pirin Meadows, but sadly, this experience has left us very doubtful. This site has real potential, but without better maintenance, supervision, and guest support, it simply does not meet the standards it promotes.
