Sri Lanka and Red Spokes: an impressive pairing

UK based staff were patient, calm and helpful in the sign on process. Sri Lankan staff were generous, attended to detail, and were invested in our journey. The route chosen was challenging at times, character building at times, but always scenic, always sensual and often utterly spectacular. Sri Lanka itself delivered postcards at every turn.

Patagonia Lake District Cycling Tour

We have just returned from a Redspokes cycling trip in the Patagonia Lake District. The whole experience was excellent, from the organisation and the accommodation through to the route and scenery. The 3 guides who accompanied us were brilliant; they couldn't do enough for us and were always cheerful and helpful with a great sense of humour. Overall, a brilliant trip and one that I would fully recommend, thanks....Michael

17 Redspokes Tours

My wife and I have been on a total of 17 tours with Redspokes. My first tour was Tibet, Lhasa to Kathmandu. I researched over 20 touring companies before selecting Redspokes for the Tibet tour. Their devotion to using local Tibetan guides was one of the deciding factors. The Tibet tour changed my life and the next year my wife (Berta) and I embarked on the Redspokes Cambodia tour. Berta experienced the life changing experience. We both come from modest means and scrimp and save each year to cycle abroad. We have also chosen Redspokes to cycle Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Colombia, Nepal and Scotland. All tours have been truly amazing! Our next tour is Argentina and we can’t wait to see this beautiful country. Redspokes appeals to both of us as they truly focus on cultural immersion. All our guides have been very supportive and knowledgeable about their respective cultures. Our only regret is that we must bade our farewells to our wonderful guides at the end of each tour.

Hi Mike and Berta,

Thank you for such a wonderful review — and for sharing 17 adventures with redspokes! We’re incredibly grateful for your loyalty over the years, from Tibet through Southeast Asia and beyond. It’s great to hear that the cultural immersion and local guides have meant so much to you both.

We’re really looking forward to welcoming you again on the Argentina tour in Sept/Oct 2026.

Warm wishes,

18 years and 5 tours later, I’m still coming back for more.

I’ve been on five cycling tours, all with Redspokes, and they’ve never disappointed. My first was 18 years ago to Laos. Since then, I’ve completed four more over the last four years. I’m now planning my sixth tour, this time to Kyrgyzstan.  I’ve looked at other providers, but I keep coming back to Redspokes because, for me, they get the balance right between ensuring a great experience and value for money.

I can’t think of a better way to get an authentic feel for a country’s culture than cycling through its towns, villages and countryside, stopping and meeting people as you go and staying in locally owned hostelries. It’s this sense of immersion that, for me, makes these tours so special.

The cycling is as challenging as you want to make it. Groups tend to include a wide mix of ages and abilities, but the local support crews are excellent at making sure everyone feels included and gets the most out of the experience. They handle the logistics seamlessly, leaving you free to enjoy everything the tour has to offer.

I’ve found Redspokes to be a friendly, down-to-earth company and a genuine pleasure to deal with. On the rare occasion something hasn’t gone to plan, they’ve dealt with it quickly and professionally. They’re also very open to feedback and suggestions, which says a lot about how much they care about continually improving what is already a great experience.

Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review. It really means a lot to us, especially coming from someone who has been travelling with redspokes for so many years.

It’s fantastic to hear that your first trip to Laos 18 years ago sparked what has now become five tours — and soon to be six! Your comments about cycling being the best way to truly experience a country’s culture and meet people along the way capture exactly what we hope our trips offer.

We’re also really pleased to hear your kind words about the local teams. They work incredibly hard behind the scenes to make sure everyone, whatever their pace or experience, can enjoy the adventure.

Thanks as well for recognising our efforts to listen to feedback and keep improving — that’s something we genuinely care about.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you back on tour in Kyrgyzstan this July. It’s a spectacular place to ride and we’re sure it will be another memorable adventure.

Thanks again for your continued support over the years, Paul — it really does mean a lot.

Best wishes,

Another memorable experience - The Old Silk Road Pakistan

My third Redspokes' trip in the same number of years, Kyrgyzstan 2023, Uzbekistan 2024 and the Baltistan area of Pakistan 2025. All have proved to be truly memorable experiences, great comradeship with both the guides and support crew as well as fellow travellers. Of the three, Pakistan proved somewhat unique, in part due to the trip unfortunately coinciding with the May 2025 India / Pakistan military hostilities. This resulted in the cancellation of many flights. After two aborted cancellations I managed to secure one of the first scheduled flights following the announcement of a ceasefire the day prior to the tour's scheduled departure after firstly checking with both Redspokes and the local team in Pakistan that the tour would still go ahead regardless of the number of participants. As it happened I was one of only two who managed to secure re-arranged flights. Nevertheless the tour went ahead regardless.
Once in Baltistan, two aspects of the trip's experience soon became apparent - spectacular scenery and the welcoming hospitality encountered throughout Baltistan. On most cycle days destinations were reached early afternoon leaving sufficient time to explore nearby villages and glaciers according to location. While most of the cycling was on the main Karakorum Highway which carried relatively little daytime traffic, the ultimate piece de resistance proved to be the ascent to and subsequent descent from the village of Shimshal via a 56km cliff hugging marvel of road construction climbing to an elevation of just over 3,000 metres. In all my years of cycling the descent from Shimshal now ranks as one of my most memorable.

What an amazing experience in Albania…

What an amazing experience in Albania with Redspokes. I have been on many fun, interesting and sometimes challenging cycle trips with this company, all over the world. Albania was no exception. Wonderful country and people, with constantly changing landscapes and terrain. The trip was well planned and organised allowing us the opportunity to see the best bits of a beautiful place. The Redspokes team have always been attentive and quick to answer any queries. They have a vast knowledge of their destinations with experienced local guides to facilitate the smooth running of the tours. Sometimes in this world of uncertainty s..t happens!! Thank you Redspokes.

Colombia - Medellin to Bogota

Another fabulous (my 7th), Redspokes tour; and my second to Colombia. Somehow this company seems to capture the best guides going; many of whom have become friends. The cycling was challenging but that is what I love - plenty of hills and entering remote areas. The accommodation is always clean, although it may not be the best but this is part of the experience & based on what is available in the area. 80% charming - and eco when they can manage it. The Colombian people are very friendly and the guides were beyond helpful. We all enjoyed their company and the local knowledge they furnished us with. Where to next? NE Vietnam I think! Well done Redspokes - you surpassed expectations once again!

Most memorable Cycling Holiday of my life

A few years ago, I embarked on an incredible 21-day tour to Peru, which included the breathtaking Inca Trail. This holiday stands out as the most memorable experience of my life. We had the opportunity to explore the stunning Colca Canyon, the serene Lake Titicaca, and the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, each offering its own unique charm and beauty. Cycling through these landscapes was an unforgettable adventure, especially when tackling the challenging Malaga Pass, which tested our endurance but rewarded us with spectacular views.

Throughout the journey, we were fortunate to meet some of the friendliest and most welcoming people on earth, whose warmth and hospitality made our trip even more special. The tour was impeccably well-organised, ensuring that every detail was taken care of, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. Our tour guides were exceptional, providing us with insightful knowledge and ensuring our safety and enjoyment at every turn.

I highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking an adventure filled with stunning scenery, cultural richness, and unforgettable memories. If given the chance, I would jump at the opportunity to go on this remarkable journey once again!

Inaccurate Travel Advice, Unsafe Conditions, and No Refund When Tour Became Inaccessible

I had booked the Pakistan – The Old Silk Route – Karakoram Highway cycling tour with Redspokes in March, prior to the most recent outbreak of conflict. Having completed two previous tours with Redspokes, I initially trusted the company to handle trips in remote regions responsibly. However, this latest experience has made me reassess the level of risk involved in those trips and how those risks were communicated by Redspokes.

During a period of armed conflict between India and Pakistan, I was encouraged to travel to Islamabad. At the time, there were widespread flight cancellations to Islamabad. In addition, sections of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) — including areas on the itinerary — were under a UK Foreign Office (FCDO) “Do Not Travel” advisory.

Redspokes minimized the situation, assuring me that “normal flight operations will resume from tomorrow.” Based on this, I flew to Dubai where flights remained cancelled for several days, stranding me in Dubai. They also inaccurately claimed the FCDO warning didn’t affect our route, though the affected section of the Karakoram Highway was the only viable overland route, and flights to Gilgit — which also passed over the “Do Not Travel” zone — were frequently grounded. As a result, both Islamabad (itinerary Day 1) and Gilgit (itinerary Day 2) were unreachable.

Despite widespread airspace closures and safety concerns, the operator continued to push for participation. I was unable to join the tour for reasons clearly outside my control. The operator later described the tour as “cancelled” in a support letter, acknowledged that I had paid in full and that I couldn’t join due to continued flight cancellations, and yet stated that no refund would be offered.

When reminded of their obligations under UK Package Travel Regulations (Reg. 12(7)), the responses were evasive and inconsistent.

In my view, the priority was preserving tour fees over participant safety. In my experience, the company had no clear refund process when the tour could not proceed. Despite multiple efforts, I was unable to recover the money I paid. I would strongly urge prospective travelers to consider how this company handles crisis situations.

We’re very sorry to hear how stressful and disappointing this experience was for you, and we appreciate the opportunity to clarify the situation for others reading this review.

1. The tour did go ahead safely and was completed by two participants.
Several other travellers made considerable efforts to join but were prevented by airline cancellations — something neither they nor we could control. Under the Package Travel Regulations, we must operate the tour if it can run safely and in line with official travel advice.

2. We consistently followed the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) guidance.
At the time of departure, the FCDO did not advise against travel to Islamabad or the areas included in our cycling itinerary. Had that advice changed to “advise against all travel” in the regions we visit, we would have been obliged to cancel the tour immediately.
While some parts of the wider Karakoram region were under separate advisories, these did not apply to the route we planned to use. We also checked conditions daily with our local team, who confirmed the itinerary remained viable.

3. Flight cancellations were outside our control.
Airspace closures led to unpredictable airline changes that affected travellers differently depending on routing and carrier. Our booking conditions — similar to most tour operators — state that refunds cannot be issued when a tour runs as scheduled but a participant cannot join due to third-party disruption such as missed or cancelled flights.

Even so, we did not rely solely on the contract. We:
• Provided written documentation to support insurance claims;
• Reviewed each case individually as a goodwill gesture;
• Assisted with alternative routing where possible.

Several travellers have since received full or partial reimbursements from their insurers. Outcomes varied due to differences in individual policy wording.

4. We do not accept that participant safety was minimised.
We never encourage travel into areas deemed unsafe by the FCDO. When asked about flight operations, we relayed information provided to us by airlines and our local partners at the time. We recognise that fast-changing news can create confusion, but we must base decisions on verified guidance rather than speculation.

5. Why the tour was not cancelled.
Cancelling a trip has significant consequences for all booked clients, including those who were able and willing to travel. As the itinerary remained safe and operable according to the FCDO and our Pakistan team, we were not legally permitted to cancel under the Package Travel Regulations.

6. We regret that the outcome did not meet your expectations.
Missing a long-planned adventure because of circumstances outside your control is deeply disappointing, and we are sorry this experience has overshadowed your previous positive tours with us. As a small, independent company, we aim to be transparent, fair, and consistent in how we manage complex situations such as regional unrest and airline disruption.

We stand by the care, communication, and support provided throughout — but we are genuinely sorry that this situation has led to such frustration. We will continue to review and strengthen how we manage crisis-related travel disruptions so that we can support our riders as effectively as possible in the future.
