Shonky business

I live in Australia now and David Howie's company shipped our goods here from Glasgow. Initially a lot of our goods were missing and thankfully we managed to retrieve most of them, eventually. Unfortunately we cut our losses and let go of some of our remaining items.
Our first contact with David was great and we thought everything went smoothly... until we received our goods and realised some stuff was missing. Then things got very bad. He wouldn't return emails and phone calls. We had to get Mary Hill police involved, and this involvement, I believe lead to David sending the extra pieces to us. The police were terrific.
During this process I was writing bad reviews on DH's company on as many websites as I could find. This hits him were it hurts - he came out swinging and claimed that I had mental health problems. This isn't true, I was just relentless in my reviews and he had his back to the wall. He also told other victims that he sued me... Rubbish - he is a deluded person that doesn't know fact from fiction. At one stage he had a two bob lawyer send me a letter, which I ignored.
He needs to be stopped and his reputation needs to be out there for all to see so this doesn't continue.

First class service

I moved from abroad and was let down by removal company on the day of the move. I phoned about and David Howie got back to me at short notice and I agreed that he should organise my removal. After agreeing I did read some negative reports and I called David to speak about it. I genuinely found him open and honest. Anyway at this point I had little choice to go with him as he was the only company who offered to step in at short notice. On the day of delivery David turned up with his team and they provided an amazing service and ensured everything was in order. He even sent a family member up to my home on the day to assist in building furniture, which was not part of the contract. I have recommended David since to various family members and he has genuinely provided a first class service. I've also had to help move a family member and the moving date had to be reviewed a few times, David accommodated every request for a change of date without any bother despite it causing him inconvenience.
I would honestly recommend David Howie without hesitation.

Beware of potentially fraudulent business practices and undelivered and/or damaged goods

In July 2012, I placed antique furniture (family heirlooms), paintings, and other personal possessions in a climate-controlled storage unit with Caledonian Moving and Storage for an agreed four-weekly sum of £60, which I faithfully paid until May 2016. So a total sum of £3,015 (inclusive an over-payment of £60 made by accident in June 2016).

At that time, I made arrangements with Caledonian's owner for my belongings to be shipped to Germany, where I now live. I paid Caledonian £2,280 by wire transfer for the shipping, which owner David Howie confirmed in an e-mail sent 9 May 2016 that he had received.

My belongings were scheduled to be shipped in June 2016. They never arrived. And Mr. Howie stopped answering e-mails and wouldn't answer the phone when he recognised my number. Eventually, I reached him on the telephone and he claimed that everything had been in transit, but that due to the Brexit referendum, his drivers had all cancelled and refused to take the shipment. He also gave me a personal sob story about his business being in trouble and that he was really no longer in the moving business, rather only storage, but that he would see this one shipment through and I needed to just give him some time but that he guaranteed I would get my belongings back.

I heard not a word from him in the following years. I tried here and there to reach him, but he never answered the phone and ignored all e-mails. Once, I caught him on the telephone and he again spent a long time explaining his woes and that he's in a period of difficulty and that I just needed to be patient. It has now been years since I have been trying to get my belongs back. Quite frankly, my depression over the loss of so many family treasures - paintings by my grandmother and great-grandmother, a four-poster bed that has been in the family since the 18th century - had me paralyzed with inaction, scared that if I "upset the apple cart," that I would never see them again.

After a prolonged period of depression as a result of my losses - which I have now accepted as permanent - I recently decided to make one more effort to regain possession of my belongings or at the very least to hold the man who took them accountable. I expected the task to be gargantuan, and indeed it is proving so. I have learned that there have been multiple victims of this company and that others have had similar experiences. Here is what I have learned so far. Please do have a thorough look around the internet before entering into any agreement with this company, as I am not convinced that it is being operated legally.

Caledonian Moving and Storage was involuntarily struck off the Companies House register in May 2015 - a full year before I made the shipping agreement with Mr. Howie. In this time, my four-weekly payments for storage were continuing to be paid into his account. I now understand that the company is registered as Air Road Sea Experts Ltd. Davie Howie is listed as the sole Director. He also operates a second removal and storage company for a relative. You can find the connection through googling and by searching the previous Directors listed for Caledonian Moving and Storage on the Companies House register. betacompanieshouse dot gov dot uk.

The company is also potentially operating its vehicle fleet without proper O-licenses. You can find a few news articles online about this issue by googling the owner/directors' names.

I also have come to understand that the company operates without insurance.

I am currently seeking restitution for the theft of tens of thousands of pounds worth of furniture and heirlooms. The financial loss is nothing, however, compared to the sentimental loss and emotional distress I have suffered. This was everything I owned in the world. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about something I used to have and will probably never see again.

My primary advice to anyone considering using this company is: don't. If you are unfortunate enough to have already stored items with them or agreed a future move - make sure you get everything in writing and insist on proper invoicing. Do not communicate by telephone as avoiding the paper trail is one of the common tactics the company used with me and with other victims.

In the interest of full disclosure - I am in contact with Mr. Howie at his new company, which he claims is operated above the board. He also continues to assure me that he will return my goods undamaged. You can imagine how comforting this assurance is after my previous experience.

You can read further reviews about the company at removal reviews dot co dot uk and on Google reviews.
