Terrible distance purchase experience

In March this year, I distance purchased an XC60 from Riverside Wakefield. I was confident that the first class Volvo customer service which I had experienced with other Volvo purchases, would be repeated. I could not have been more wrong, Problems arose from the get go when the car arrived with significant bodywork issues. It was obvious, as was admitted, it had not been checked or prepped properly. Promises made were routinely broken. Opportunities to put matters right were not grasped. The car was rejected, yet getting it collected was a nightmare and obtaining a refund was a long drawn out costly, stressful, draining experience. This caused me very significant disruption. People further up the branch management structure became involved, yet the same appalling service continued. This was not one problem or one rogue assistant, it was a systemic Branch failure. There was a lack of care or consideration of the impact on the customer. Ultimately, following a desperate call to their Head Office the HOB kindly intervened and thankfully my main refund was processed. I would mention that Oliver, the initial contact was very pleasant and I was left with the strong impression that he had been failed by others,

After-sales customer service let them down

I can see Riverside has a decent number of positive reviews, and I'm pleased that many customers have had good experiences. Unfortunately, my own experience was very different once an issue arose after purchase.

Communication was generally prompt, which I appreciated. However, I found the overall handling of my complaint to be unnecessarily difficult and felt opportunities to resolve matters at an early stage were missed. What I believe could have been resolved through constructive dialogue instead became a lengthy and stressful process that ultimately reached court proceedings before a settlement was agreed.

For me, the true measure of a dealership isn't just the sales process—it's how customers are treated when something goes wrong. Sadly, that's where I felt Riverside fell short.

As a result, Riverside has lost my future custom, together with that of several family members who had previously purchased vehicles from them and used their servicing department.

Incompetent

I had my car booked in for a free service, over a month before it was due. For a modest fee they offered to collect my car, take it for the service and return it. Within 3 days of the service they cancelled the collection part. Gave me a lame excuse. This was probably down to the fact that the car was over 1 hour away which they had not realized. A bunch of wasters.

Beware hyper inflated service prices

Took my Volvo recently for service at Riverside Volvo Wakefield, during which I was sent a text explaining they’d performed a “free health check” of my vehicle. This highlighted the need for two front tyres as urgent, (I knew about these anyway), and recommended a third tyre and discs and pads. All to the tune of over £2,000. Yes, you heard right, over £2,000. Firstly, I’d not asked for a free health check, and secondly this price extortionate. Clearly done to try and generate even more income. At sale last year everyone was so nice and happy to help. What a difference. So, I took my car to a local trusted garage who quoted me £630 for the same work. Now I understand they are not Volvo mechanics, and I didn’t have premium tyres replaced, but they’re still qualified to do standard work like tyres and brakes. Over 3 times the amount of a local (and trusted garage I’ll add) is outrageous. This hyper inflated price is neither justified or warranted, and is an example of how Riverside try to take advantage of people. In fact the third tyre I was told had at least 4-6 months still remaining based on current mileage, so didn’t need replacing yet at all. My advice is take your Volvo elsewhere, especially for basic routine items such as brakes and tyres. At £1,500 more than a trusted local garage, this is shockingly disgraceful. I honestly don’t know how they can quote these ridiculous prices.

Useless!

Incompetent, ignorant Stay Clear! Purchased a vehicle, all hunky dory during sales process. Paid all deposits as requested. Pre-arranged in advance a time / day for collection as I was travelling 3 hours to collect. Arrived on time on collection day. Car was filthy and had deep scratches after being told the car had no marks. Negotiated scratches off the price after some back and forth. Had to wait around for the car to be valeted. Then they couldn't tax the vehicle so was ferried around Doncaster looking for a post office. The Car was then also not charged up (electric) so I had to wait even longer for it to charge before I could drive back home. Missing pump, first aid kit and tyre repair kit, all of which I was told during the sales process would be replaced prior to collection. Still haven't got them, even though promised. Called over 8 times and sent just as many emails to request warranty papers and invoice. Took over a week to get these. No real apology at all from anyone I spoke to, just seemed to be the norm. Really quick to try and take payment, but that's where their urgency stops. Place is a joke, seems to be ran by people that couldn't really care less. Really shocked to have this level of poor service from a Volvo dealership. I love the car, but honestly, stay clear and spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Quick to ask for full payment but…

Quick to ask for full payment but that's all that's quick. Handover of the vehicle was delayed twice due to a couple of issues I noted before buying. I was told that was because the parts were on order and they were waiting for them. Finally got a collection date. Turned up to collect the vehicle and hay presto the parts that had been on order and delayed the collection still hadn't been fitted even though the salesman said they had! Got passed to the service manager who took a list of the issues including new issues and photos of the parts that wanted ordering. Weeks passed and no communication so I called back myself to find nobody knew anything about it. More emails with photos and a booking in date to fit the pre ordered parts. Took the vehicle in expecting it to be a couple of days. No, waiting for pre ordered parts to be ordered again! Collected the vehicle and drove 500 yards before realising thay one of the faults still hadn't been fixed. Answer we don't work on your brand of car usually so don't know how it works! Still waiting for a call back nearly 2 weeks later.
I shouldn't have to be considering taking my vehicle to another garage and having it fixed myself just so I know its done

mixed customer service levels

can't really fault the sales side of things. Helpful, not pushy. however the after sales care is not the best. had an issue within days of collecting vehicle. phoned to explain what was wrong with it. they told me it needed a replacement part and booked it in for the following week. I drove it over to them (40) mile round trip for them to take it into workshop look at it and tell me it needed a replacement part! you already knew that! was told it would about a week for part to come in and they would ring when it arrived. two weeks later still nothing so I rang them to be told " oh sorry part was on back order so delayed but would be in within next couple of days" would have been good service to have informed me of the situation unless of course it hadn't even been ordered originally! Had to then do another 40 mile round trip to get it fitted when it did arrive. Didn't help when the job sheet that was sent to me had a load of question marks after the fault description as though I was either a liar or an idiot.

Riverside Hull - Zero customer service as soon as you have bought

Buying a car from them is extremely frustrating. Awful customer service as soon as you leave the forecourt. Had the car 2 months now and they still haven't fixed issues they assured me would be done before handover, still haven't been given both keys for the car. They say they will call you back and don't. Every single interaction I have had has been the result of me chasing them up on their promises. I wouldn't ever buy from them again and would recommend you go elsewhere

I recently visited Volvo Cars Doncaster and had a very positive experience from start to finish. The whole process felt straightforward and genuinely customer-focused, with no pressure sales approach which made it easy to take my time and make the right decision.
Johnny was especially helpful throughout my visit. He came across as polite, approachable, and respectful, and never pushed or rushed the sale at any point. Instead, he took the time to answer questions clearly and made sure I felt comfortable with every step.
The service was also impressively quick and efficient, with minimal waiting time and everything handled smoothly. Overall, it was a relaxed and professional experience, and I’d be happy to return in the future or recommend the dealership to others looking for a stress-free car buying experience.

Unprofessional, incompetent, and zero communication

Unprofessional, incompetent, and zero communication.
I took my car to this official Volvo main dealer in Leeds to diagnose a screeching engine noise. I paid a £160 diagnostic fee and a further £450 for parts and labor that their technician "confirmed" would fix the issue.
I picked up the car, and the exact same noise is still there. They completely misdiagnosed the vehicle, charged me £610 in total, and fixed absolutely nothing. To make matters worse, they couldn't even manage basic attention to detail; they handed the car back dirty while assuring me it had been washed.
When I complained, the Service Manager, Richard, tried to blame a wheel bearing. As a basic mechanical fact, a wheel bearing cannot make noise when a car is at a complete standstill (which is when this noise occurs). I am a customer describing a symptom, not a mechanic; I paid premium Volvo prices for their expertise, not to play an expensive guessing game at my expense.
I sent a formal email outlining these facts and asking for a resolution. The Service Manager, Richard, has completely ignored me and gone radio silent since Monday.
If you expect premium main-dealer service, competence, and basic customer care, avoid this place. They are happy to take your money for unnecessary parts, but will ghost you when they get it wrong.

Good choice of cars

Brad was a great salesman and provided all of the information I needed without being pushy in trying to sell me a car. The car I purchased was in great condition and I was well informed throughout the process. I felt that Brad went above and beyond to ensure that I received the car quickly and to a standard you'd expect. Thank you.

I picked up my BYD Seal U DM-i from the Wakefield branch, and the whole experience was spot on from start to finish.
I worked with Georgia, and she was honestly a breath of fresh air. I had quite a few questions about switching to a plug-in hybrid—everything from charging times to the tech inside—and she really knew her stuff. She was super patient and took the time to explain everything clearly, so I never felt rushed or pressured into making a decision.
The entire buying process was incredibly straightforward and stress-free. It’s rare to find a dealership where things feel this relaxed and friendly, but Georgia and the rest of the team made it feel easy.
I’m really happy with the car so far—it’s a fantastic drive. If you’re heading to Riverside, definitely ask for Georgia; she’ll look after you. Highly recommended!

Volvo Riverside Motor Group

This was my first time purchasing a vehicle entirely online, and the experience exceeded my expectations. Jack Smith, the salesperson, found exactly the vehicle I was looking for and met all my requirements perfectly.
Communication was smooth throughout the process, and all my questions were answered promptly and clearly. Jack was extremely helpful, friendly, and professional from start to finish.
I would definitely give this a 5‑star service. Well done! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
