I am extremely disappointed with the service from Standard Chartered Bank. I completed my KYC verification over a video call with their agent, but since then nothing has progressed. My account is still not properly functional, and I am unable to operate it smoothly.
Every time I call customer service, they simply ask me to “wait 24 hours.” This has been repeated over and over with no real solution or follow-up. It is very frustrating and shows a complete lack of responsibility and customer care.
A bank should prioritize its customers’ ability to access and use their own accounts, but Standard Chartered has failed to deliver even the most basic level of service. Very disappointing experience.
Standard Chartered Bank does not understand client service at all
In February 2024 my wife passed away in The Netherlands. I live permanently in Thailand and came to The Netherlands to arrange funeral, empty apartment etc. When checking her email, found out she stil had an active bank account with Standard Chartered Bank in The Gambia. I contacted them by phone and email but info was rejected due to privacy reasons. Whose privacy, I asked? I am the sole heir to her estate, being her husband and Dutch will. I sent proof with lots of documents (all of those had to be translated into English) to The Gambia. I also informed Standard Chartered Bank in London. However, they claimed the issue had to be solved by a branch office in The Gambia. Made several telephone calls from Thailand to UK (as the Gambia never answered phone or answered to my emails). Even sent letter to CEO in UK but no reaction. In June 2025 I checked email of my late wife on her laptop and there was a message. Standard Chartered Bank The Gambia was taken over by another bank and a new account would be made. So far nothing heard, but maybe now I have to go into discussions with another ban and start the whole issue again? Incredible that after more than 17 months, this issue still not has been solved.
Dispute resolution on a transaction
Dispute resolution on a transaction.
I had placed a call to Standard Chartered customer care regarding a transaction SMS that i had received and they had informed me that the amount is not yet processed and then they gave me a authorization code to inform vendor to process for refund. Upon communicating with the vendor, they answered vaguely and stated they will process for refund without giving any assurance. Due to the kind of reply I received from the vendor, I got back to Standard Chartered customer care seeking to put a dispute on the transaction but was met with astounding level of incompetence and inefficiency.
The inability to simply lodge a dispute for a card transaction is deeply concerning.
In this scenario, it seems that they are siding with the vendor and me being a customer for the 2 has been stonewalled.
Absolute trash experience
Absolute trash experience. Standard Chartered caters to a certain clientele: the infinitely patient and infinitely gullible. Why does it take over a month to start a new account and receive money? That's like going to the hospital and waiting for a month for panadol. This institution (hardly worthy of that name) is nothing but a joke and a scam, a waste of time and a blight on society.
The worst banking experience
The worst banking experience. Full of crap. Very poor customer service and no one knows what’s going on with the bank. Each month a customer relationship manager changes and no one tells you until you make about 10 calls to the customer service. That also if you get through it. So many unnecessary bank charges and crapload of lies. Zero benefits at all. The lounge access at airports is their biggest scam for credit cards. You should never go for this bank and I will never ever recommend this bank to anyone. This is the most ridiculous banking experience I’ve had. You should try Sampath, HNB and there are plenty other banks. Basically they want me to pay for me doing all my work with zero customer support. Banking app is a nightmare too.
Absolutely worst bank (Singapore)
Absolutely worst bank (Singapore). No way to speak with any live person in helpline at all, you're just helpless if your issue is not one of the options in the helpline.
Disappointing and Inconsistent Annual Fee Policy
I have been a Standard Chartered credit cardholder for a number of years. For the most part, the card has been average, with a standard credit limit and no particularly noteworthy benefits or rewards.
The main reason I kept the card was that the annual fee could be waived. However, this process was always an inconvenience, as it required me to call customer service annually to submit a waiver request.
This year, my experience has been very disappointing. When I called to request the annual fee waiver, as I have done successfully in previous years, the customer service representative informed me that it could not be waived and that I must pay the full amount.
This sudden and unexpected change in policy, without any prior warning, is frustrating. It gives the impression that Standard Chartered does not value customer loyalty. The hassle of having to pay an annual fee for a card that offers no compelling perks, coupled with the inconsistent application of their own fee waiver policy, has made my decision clear.
Due to this negative experience, I will be cancelling my credit card with Standard Chartered once this term is over. I would advise potential customers to be cautious and aware that the annual fee waiver is not guaranteed, despite what may have been the practice in the past.
Advertising? Lies more like.
Indicated an interest rate on their promotional material for a loan. When I actually applied, the interest rate offered was EIGHT PERCENTAGE POINTS HIGHER. Misleading advertising, and as I sadly know from the inside, a dreadful bank.
Horrible
If there was any way to give rating in minus that's what they deserve not even 1 star. Banking sector globally is becoming digital and they do not even have an email id where i could contact to get my issue resolved. I am going around in circles for past 1 year with the issue but matter remain unresolved. I will strongly suggest not to waste time with such a crappy bank.

I worked in Indonesia for more than 20 years. I trusted Standard Chartered Bank for keeping my funds. I was the only person on that account. 20 years later I wanted to get my money for retirement and was informed that the account was closed 1. Year after opening the account. I have tried to contact Standard Chartered Bank on Battery Rd in Singapore but no one will tell me where my money went. I am in process of getting my passport renewed an will travel to Singapore and hire a advocat to file a law suit against the bank.DO not trust Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore.
Your money including FDs are not safe in SC Bank
Your money including FD is not safe in SC bank having poor Cyber Security System. Rs.1 lakh has been fraudulently withdrawn by premature closure of FD through my saving account in SC Bank, Noida Branch on 20-03-2025. I am surprised that the bank is holding me only responsible for this act of cyber scammer where my FD account of Rs.5 lakh was prematurely closed and the hacker got the amount transferred in my saving account and unauthorizedly withdrew Rs. 1 lakh from the saving account.
While my FD account was being prematurely closed and the amount was being transferred to my saving account, I did not get any message. This reflects the weakness of SC Bank cyber security system.
I have accounts in other bank like ICICI. Similar attempt of fraud was made by the hackers in my account of this bank on the same day and time but I got timely SMS from ICICI half an hour in advance which alerted me, and I could protect against the fraud attempts.
Had I got some message from SC bank at the time when my FD was being prematurely closed, I would have taken immediate action.
Similarly, if anyone searches for customer care number in ICICI, SBI, BOI etc, one toll free number is prominently displayed for help which is not the case in SC Bank.
After the above fraud, I registered my complaint on mail to customer care service on the same day but a very casual, general response and update was mailed by SC bank two days after the incident. With the help of Cyber Crime Branch, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, I shared the account number, IFC code of the bank where the amount was transferred by the hacker with SC bank Branch Manager and my RM and requested them to help in early blocking of the hacker’s account, but their response was not encouraging. Before getting the hacker’s account information from the cybercrime branch, I was requesting similar information from my RM, SC bank but he declined to share.
With above brief narration of the cyber fraud incident, I can conclude that the poor cyber security system of SC bank, indifferent attitude of the bank staff has resulted into this loss of Rs. 1 lakh to me.
They really do not know how to be…
They really do not know how to be flexible and understanding towards customers. Overlooked a payment for just 2 days and they refused to budge to waive off late fee charges. End up I settled the outstanding balance in full, paid that $100 late fee. Cancelling all cards and banking with them.
The call center agents are not clear on…
The call center agents are not clear on what they say , every time its a hassle with these agents .
the system they have is also really disappointing considering the fact that they call themselves international bank . Most of local banks would have more features and facilities than them.
also their APP-its pathetic , there is no way to complaint from app, and most of the features are neither comming soon or showing error code
I am extremely disappointed with the…
I am extremely disappointed with the level of service I have received. I requested a statement a week ago, and since then, I have been calling daily to follow up. However, I have yet to receive any update or the requested statement.
Pathetic service
Each time I call, I am told it’s a server issue or that I will receive it by evening or morning. Yet, nothing has been sent, and no clear resolution has been provided.
Credit card not recommended
Getting through the service line to cancel my hubby's credit card is frustrating, as the staff are unable to resolve my issue. Regardless of what you say, you can tell that their online service staff don't listen. It came across as if they were trained to follow a standard script. So yes, I would never recommend or consider their credit card service.
Utterly Disgraceful Banking Experience – Total Lack of Transparency, Accountability, and Integrity
My experience with Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) Hong Kong has been nothing short of appalling. I feel compelled to share this in full to warn others—especially expatriates or international clients—about the level of dysfunction, misinformation, and outright negligence I endured.
Over the course of several months, I was repeatedly in contact with SCB Hong Kong regarding the status of my personal banking account due to some compliance situation (which I managed to complete and solve. I raised concerns about whether my account was at risk and was given written assurances—not once, but on multiple occasions—that my account was safe and not under review for closure.
These reassurances were provided by:
Ron Zhaoyong Zhang
Heaven Jiayan Jian
Sisi Tang.
Despite these assurances, I woke up one day to a letter (delivered 24 days after the date on the letter) to discover my account was to be abruptly and permanently closed within 30 days of the letter (giving me 6 days to sort this situation out). Not only was this a gross violation of trust, but it directly impacted my ability to manage personal finances and access funds.
What followed was extreme periods of customer service failure:
1. My emails were ignored or responded to with vague and scripted replies.
2. The hotline (if I got through or passed their 'security test' provided conflicting information, often contradicting what was said in writing.
3. No one took responsibility, and I was never offered a formal explanation or apology.
The closure happened despite clear documentation showing my attempts to resolve and clarify everything well in advance, which I have in writing (email copy).
Due to this mishandling, I was also forced to liquidate investment holdings at a loss, since I could no longer manage my funds via the SCB platform. This resulted in direct and unnecessary financial damage that could have easily been avoided if SCB had acted transparently and professionally.
Let me be clear: this was not a simple banking error. This was systemic failure, lack of communication, and what I believe to be misconduct and internal mismanagement. Even when I tried to seek clarity from the named individuals, they either did not respond or gave inconsistent answers.
I have since begun filing formal complaints with the following Hong Kong regulatory bodies:
1. Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) – for failure to follow fair banking conduct.
2. Hong Kong Consumer Council – for unacceptable customer service and communication.
3. Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) – due to forced liquidation of investment products without choice.
4. Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) – due to suspicion of biased internal processes and negligence.
It is deeply disappointing that an international financial institution like SCB would operate with such a lack of transparency, human decency, and accountability, especially since I was with them for almost 10 years in Hong Kong.
If you value your peace of mind, access to your own funds, and honest communication—do not bank with Standard Chartered in Hong Kong.
I will give negative star. horrible
I will give zero star. They changed me memebership fee after more than 10 yrs of free membership credit card I thought I have cancelled. I asked for cancellation and they ask me to pay $2.70 outstanding fee. But they didnt tell me how to pay. Later I emailed them ho wto pay but didnt get a reply . AFter that I called them and they say it is with collection department and say they cannot do anything. The collection department just say you have to pay up. I then ask for membership fee waiver and late charges . They only waive membership fee and 1 month late fees but the past months they will not waive. I called again to ask for waiver of late charge due to memebership after yelling to them. they say they will put up a waiver request . But I didnt get a answer and they didnt inform me. So they didnt approved the waiver so now I called up collection department and they asked me to call another number. After call the other number the person said it is with collection company and they not incharge. So they just keep pusing around and no solution. They ask me to ask waiver from collection company. I asked why would collection company waive ? So terrible this passing around .I told them reason to waive but they just passs it to someone else. I gie the m negative stars.
Harassing customers for Interest Certificate
Despite several visits to branch & repeated online requests they haven't issued an Interest Certificate for previous FY. This happens every year. Stanchart recently doubled the minimum balance demand, but service is pathetic to the point of criminal negligence. This is purely harassment of customers, including Super-Senior Citizens.
Please give option of -10 stars.
Fraud Fraud Fraud Biggest Fraud Bank In India
So Until the end of March, my account was fully operational and suddenly from first of April 1025 my account stop working after sending so many emails I got to know that they closed my account without prior notice is completely unacceptable. This appears to be fraudulent, and I will make sure to raise my voice against it I’m leave out of India and my car EMI and so many things were linked on this account only and you made me helpless here really pathetic act from your bank @standard chartered bank
The question is ok If my account has been closed, why am I still receiving messages and emails from your bank on my registered email ID and phone number?
They may have closed my account with whatever reason but I still need my pending amount to be credited.Additionally, they also have to send me an official letter via email confirming the closure of my account, along with the reason provided.
I also wanted to know that a bank is allowed to close an account without informing the customer. Does this align with RBI guidelines, or is this merely a tactic to hold onto customers’ funds?
@standard Chartered Bank Furthermore, I need everything in writing, including the final settlement that you have refused to pay. Once I return to India, I will take legal action regarding this matter.
Looking forward to your prompt response.
Thanks,
Pradeep
