Sun car rentals malta are the worst car rental I have used in 40 years. Amongst several cons they tried to extorte from me, they charged me 25 euros for picking up the car 45 minutes having waited outside the rental office for more than 30 minutes due to their dreadfully slow service of other customers. Avoid like the plague!

complete SCAMMERS! 1. They charge for fuel upfront - beyond the average fuel price to fill a tank. 2. They gave us a different car than what was promised. 3. When they suddenly presented an "upgrade" they charged us more than what I paid online. 4. We spent 3 hours at the airport trying to sort this out after landing. 5. They charged an extra amount on my credit card after returning from holiday without communicating what the charges were for. When queried, they said it was for a speeding ticket. On checking the ticket, that had charged more than double the cost issued on the speeding fine. We're currently investigating this.
A thoroughly ROGUE, SCAM and FRAUDULENT car rental company. AVOID like the plague.

Worst Car Rental Experience of My Life – Sun Car Rentals Malta Are Crooks!
DO NOT RENT FROM SUN CAR RENTALS MALTA – THEY'RE A TOTAL SCAM OPERATION RUN BY THIEVES AND BULLIES!
Pickup was a joke: Due to an unavoidable flight delay (not my fault!), their arrogant staffer Melik (or Melih – the bastard) slapped me with a bogus €15 "delay fee" and treated me like dirt from the start.
Drop-off? Pure hell. I returned the car 1.5 hours EARLY (in spotless condition – no scratches, full tank as required), but this same rude prick tried to invent ANOTHER fee for... early return? When I called him out on the €15 scam, he snarled "Write an email if you have a problem" and SLAMMED THE DOOR IN MY FACE! Zero respect, zero professionalism – just a coward hiding behind a counter.
That's not the end. Despite my formal complaint email on Oct 13 (ignored for 8 days), they stole €84.94 from my credit card on Oct 21 WITHOUT EXPLANATION – fuel? Cleaning? Fabricated damage? No invoice, no proof, just theft! And my €300 deposit? Vanished into thin air, over 10 days later. No refund, no response – straight-up FRAUD under EU consumer laws.
Sun Car Rentals: Unethical crooks who exploit tourists. Avoid like the plague – go with anyone else. I've reported to MCCAA and ECC Malta; they deserve to be shut down. Ruined my trip!

We booked car hire with this company through an agency but I would recommend you pay a bit more and AVOID Sun Car.
We were greeted by a grumpy rep who asked us to leave the room and wait in the corridor. Not sure why as there was plenty of room in the office.
We got to the front of the queue at 16.30. We were told that we were late for pickup and our car had been allocated to someone else. Our pickup was booked for 15.00. So we were 90 mins late. That was due to the late departure of our flight from Heathrow. Apparently under the T and C s if you arrive after an hour you are classed as a 'no show' and our car was no longer available. The only car they had was apparently an upgrade which cost more per day than the original rental. What an absolute rip off. We supplied our flight number on booking so they would have known we were delayed. There is no way they 'reallocated' our car in that half hour window. It's just a money making scheme. The rep was also very rude and unhelpful. It put a dampner on the start of our holiday to Malta. Do not go for the cheapest and avoid Sun Cars at all costs. Also the upgraded car was like a shed on wheels. If that was an upgrade I hate to think what the original car was like.

A lot of the reviews are old, so let me give you a more accurate up to date review.

These people are thieves, the lady working on 11th august 2025 was terrible. No manners, no brain, just a puppet for the corrupt company. We decided not to collect our car in the end, others around us had the same feeling and someone even returned their rental a few minutes after collection as they found something better. Losing our deposit was worth not working with this company. The lady even had the cheek to say “you won’t find somewhere cheaper”, guess what? We did, I completely recommend Oasis rentals near Seaview hotel they laughed at the situation with Suncar and looked after us instead.

In short - DONT USE THIS COMPANY USE OASIS INSTEAD!

We booked with 4 months in advance a Mercedes Benz, we arrived and a very rude woman just wanted to give us a mini cooper saying that it was an upgrade, and they were going to charge 200 euros extra. Plus they wanted to charge for fuel (which according to another company that’s illegal in Malta, it was legal but not anymore). So we went to first car rental and we got a new car with a much nicer woman for a fair price

For a 184 euro announced paid 520 ! The woman at the desk is really unpleasant, so run far, run fast !

- They quoted €80 for 6 days of car rental but when you arrive there they charge €320.

- I had to wait in a corridor with no seating space for an hour whilst ONE couple who hadn't booked a car were helped to make a choice, very annoying!

- The car was okay but had small dents and damages all over. We received a different car than what we reserved

- I had to put down a deposit of €350 whoch was not mentioned when I made the reservation.

- They charge €40 for a half tank of fuel, we did a lot of driving so I refueled and for €20 you have a half tank.

I am very unhappy with the service, do not use these thieves

Very bad decision of us to rent a car from an unknown company - or not famous company as we thought it does not matter it is going to be fine for one time.
For the first time in my travel life I am renting such a car. We always book Hertz or Thrifty and I am not gonna make another mistake again and not booking a famous well reviewed company.
Those people are cheap thieves and they provide unsafe cars with melted tires . They promise you good cars in the big category and then you end up with an old , Skodia Fabia Estate 2016 -and we wouldn’t mind if they did not refer cars like Ford Puma and Nissan Juke when we booked it or similar to those. What is similar exactly ? That was a joke of a car.
They only care for the easy money from the tourists. Very common but not acceptable. I paid you 214 euros for three days for this piece of trash with broken windows and brakes that were whistling.
There was an office without a specific name in the airport and everybody that we asked from the other companies said to stay away from them or they did not even know them.
I hope this company or whatever they are will get a lesson and I hope I will get my money back a least half of it since I booked something for 130 euros and I was imaging I was going to pay another 50 in the worst case senario, not another 80 euros for stupid “ airport fees” and the fuel which was a trick so you will return the car with fuel in it for the next victim.
They have a policy for the fees the charge and that is acceptable the non acceptable is that they take advantage of the tourist and they appear in skyscanner as a low cost rental which firstly, obviously they are not - 70 euros a day for this car was a joke and secondly they are not clear at all to the customer. The agent did not even tell us the car before we decided if you are going to pay for it. Moreover he was in a rush and he was not polite telling me I should not speak to him loudly when I just show him our hotel name when he asked me and he told me “ Oh I do not understand Greek” when I was showing it in English from Booking and then I read it out to him and showed it back to him maybe a little louder since I had a conversation on the way and he told me not to speak to him like that. I had no intention to speak to anybody like “ something” I was mad under my incovience since I knew what was happening.
These people are clowns. On the car it has a sticker for cleaning fee 70 euros plus if you go to the beach or if you drive in Valletta. For a dirty old car already and since I follow the rules of the region that I am driving in and I follow the correct parking / driving orders you will tell me where to drive ? Saturday and Sunday are free to drive in Valletta. They think they have to do with people that are not aware of anything.
Stay away from this company so you will not ruin your mood and maybe your vacation.

I am referring to Sun Car Rentals Malta, which can be booked via e.g. discovercars.com. This is clearly a scam operation. They wanted to charge me €275 for an invisible scratch at the bottom of the front (plastic) bumper, 85€ for half a fuel tank, €220 for using a visa debit card (instead of a credit card), €60 for a baby seat etc., basically more than doubling the confirmed booking rate.

They are thieves , I made a reservation from their website and when I picked up the car they multiple the price x3 if you cancel they took the full money of your reservation. They are unkind people and thieves. Never do a booking with them in Malta. Son unos ladrones multiplicaron x3 mi alquiler de coche a mi llegada al cancelar se cobraron toda la reserva. Unos piratas chulos y prepotentes. No alquiléis con ellos

Disgraceful service and disgustingly rude manager who want to talk aggressively start fights. Elbar is same price and amazing service

Suncar strike again! Absolute thieveing so-and-so's. They confirmed my rental, then cancelled it at the last moment, then went ahead and took my money (visa debit). The only 2 emails I've gotten from them have been some nonsense about systems being down and finance dept having technical difficulties.
I've been trying to contact the retailer dispute people at my card company but have had no luck so far. I'll be damned if I let them get away with this though.
PLEASE PLEASE no one use Suncar/Decode Car Hire - they are thieves and will rob you without blinking twice.

I paid in full (luckily by credit card) prior to going away, when we arrived in Athens with our 3yo and 1yo we were told by the representative that no payment had been received and we had to pay again or we couldn't havethe car! Phoned Suncar who said they would sort it out but I had to leave a swiped cedit card slip, next day it was paid in. Couldn't contact suncar once back in UK they only answer international calls. Their parent compay is DECODE CAR HIRE, they debited my credit card in the uk. Once back in teh uk they said it would take 28 working days for the refund, nothing happened but the credit card company recovered funds.
Seems they have done this scam all over teh place but I really feel DECODE CAR HIRE are behind this and advise people to avoid them like the plague too!!!!

Like many others we have been ripped off too.

we made 2 separate bookings with Suncar and paid both in full only to find out that they didn't pay the car rental companies. We had to fork out more money and are now trying to get our money back via the credit card company. Not the way to start a 5 week holiday from the other side of the world.

Why is the company of crooks able to take peoples money? There is no way they should be in business.

DON'T USE THEM......Like others, I booked a car at a great price (too good to be true??) for 11 days with Suncar to pick up at Alicante airport for October half term holidays. Got there - local company tell me they have not been paid, they can't get any response from Suncar and I need to pay again - thankfully, the local company was small, reputable and did not overcharge me. However now I'm entering into battle to get my money back....... I see now that I am not alone and I will return to using my previous car hire arrangements in future.......

If you unfortunately use this company they will probably take your money and not provide any service. Forget writing to them or emailing as they never reply.

Contact your bank and ask them to "chargeback" (visa debit). This will refund your money with 45 days. My bank Nationwide told me they are finding this company are responsible for many complaints. All have been charged back from their bank in Riga.

In short this company is a bunch of crooks

CALL YOUR CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD PROVIDER, ASK THEM FOR THE DISPUTE AND CHARGEBACK`S DEPARTMENT.
You have to write all of your details, what happaned, attach your confirmation or any email between you and the suncar company!
We had the same problem, we get back the money from the credit card provider!

I can't believe we got scammed by this company - I thought I'd checked them out but now I can see their (attractive) website has hardly any contact details, and I should (on hindsight) never have paid for a car rental upfront. We booked a car with Budget (via Suncar) for £138 in May and when we came to pick up the car in August, Budget refused to accept the prepaid voucher. I've contacted Budget because to be honest they were very unhelpful about the whole thing. I emailed Suncar and was assured I'd get a refund, but of course no such thing has happened. When you contact the telephone number on the paperwork it rings out, and now the emails are bouncing back with a (badly written) autoresponse.

booked a car with Suncar for a week in Turkey. However when I arrived to
collect it, the company said they had not been paid. I had to book another
car with another company (which was more expensive). Since I had returned to
UK Suncar are not responding to my emails and their phone number is
permanently engaged. My advice to any prospective customers is to avoid
Suncar and use a more professional company who believe in good honest
customer service. warning - This company are still on the net trading
