Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays is a locally based self-catering agency focusing on East Devon. Established over 35 years ago with just a handful of cottages, the company has grown to the point where we now successfully market a wide variety of properties throughout the region. From the start we were determined to build up a reputation for offering only the best of properties. The company has grown, but everyone involved still holds true to the combination of commitment and professionalism that is the foundation of the company's success. Family run to this day, we are still able to offer that personal service which sadly in today's ever increasing pace of life can sorely fall by the wayside.

Ants in Chapel Cottage - Sweetcombe Agent

Upon arrival at Chapel Cottage, we were pleased with our choice of accommodation., It was private and in a quiet, lovely area.

Once unpacked, we sat and read the cottage information booklet which detailed a recurring ant problem that occurs inside the lounge and dining room window areas at certain times of the year. The booklet also stated that pest specialists had been out and nothing was able to be done to solve the problem as the ants lived in the walls of the cob. Unfortunately, this made us rather anxious and whilst settling in on our first evening, our mood changed to one of despair when the ants, and flying ants duly arrived as stated in the booklet! We removed the cushions instantly as they were covered with ants. Ant powder was provided, which we used, but unfortunately it didn’t work on the flying ants.

The following evening, in desperation, as to how to control the ants we phoned the out of hours contact number only to have the phone put down on us! Nobody called us back and to say we were livid is an understatement.

Two people from Sweetcombe Cottages did come out the following day to try and help elevate the problem to which they thought this should have worked, but to no avail. The ants persisted and returned every night of our stay, completely ruining our holiday. We felt compelled to be in the cottage each evening and changed our plans to try and control the ants/flying ants. We were stressed to our wits’ end.

We wish the known problem was disclosed to us prior to booking. Sweetcombe Cottages should have been up front in advance of taking our money. Nowhere on Sweetcombe Cottages website for this cottage was there any warning about the ant problem. We felt well and truly deceived and felt this cottage was miss-sold to us.

We were told the ants were ‘an act of nature’ and only lasted for 48hours. In our opinion, the ants are a known, recurring problem that Sweetcombe Cottages knew about and admit cannot be fixed in this cottage (as stated in the cottage’s information book).

We never received an apology for the phone being put down on us or the suffering during our stay. We did ask for a part refund which they reimbursed £50 as a good will gesture from the owner of the cottage!. We believe this was too little too late especially after vacuuming and cleaning every evening. Not once did we have a relaxing evening.

We hope this review will make other decent holidaymakers aware of a potentially ruined holiday and not to book this cottage in the warmer months of the year.

Dear Nicole,

We’re very sorry to read that your experience at Chapel Cottage did not meet your expectations, and we’d like to take this opportunity to address the points raised in your review.

Chapel Cottage is a much-loved 380-year-old cob-built property, full of character and charm. Being an older cottage nestled in a countryside setting, it is naturally more exposed to seasonal elements such as flying ants -a temporary, nationwide phenomenon that can occur over a few days during the summer months. This is not a persistent pest issue, but an act of nature that can affect any home, particularly during a short window of warm, humid weather.

To clarify, the note in the cottage welcome book is included purely as a precaution, so that guests are not alarmed if flying ants appear - and to direct them to the ant powder and spray provided, which usually resolves the issue quickly. Many years go by without any sightings at all.

You called our office on the Monday morning to report a few ants, and we offered to attend the cottage that same day, but this was declined. Later that evening, you called our out-of-hours emergency line. We understand you were distressed, but unfortunately our staff were subjected to raised voices and shouting during the call. We take the wellbeing of our team seriously and cannot condone verbal abuse. After asking for the call to remain calm, we made the difficult decision to end the call when this was not possible. We followed up with a call the very next morning and visited promptly that day.

During our visit, there were no ants present inside the property at that time. We proactively applied further ant powder, sealed a couple of minor cracks where they may have entered, and did all we could to assist. You acknowledged during this visit that the flying ants were indeed a temporary natural event and that there was nothing more we could do.

At the end of your stay, you sent through some photos and videos showing a small number of ants, mostly dead, in the window seat area, which had already been treated with powder and contained the activity. While we do not believe this constituted an infestation, we understand it affected your enjoyment and therefore offered a goodwill refund of £50.

We always aim to be transparent, and we’re sorry you felt this situation should have been stated more clearly before booking. As it is a seasonal, weather-related occurrence that may or may not happen each year, and affects many properties across the UK, we do not list it as a permanent issue.

We’re disappointed you felt your holiday was ruined, despite our team’s efforts to assist throughout your stay, we are a small local team who go above and beyond to help our guests. We take all feedback seriously and are always looking for ways to improve the guest experience. However, we also have a responsibility to protect our staff and property owners to provide a fair, balanced account of events.

Kind Regards

MIni break away in Weston,Dorset

we have just come home from a mini break staying in Rosemary Cottage ,Weston.Property was perfect for us as we took our daughter ,her partner and new baby.Plenty of room for baby things and a travel cot was provided for us. we took 3 dogs aswell and there was plenty of room for them in and outisde the poropoerty with a secure front garden. everthing we needed was provided all we had to take was our own food supplies. A family member and her dog lived next door and was so so friendly and also helpful on the best dog walks for our pooches. The donkey saturay is a stones throw away and a lovely walk around for us,baby and pooches. we met polly and her little boy and again she was very helpful on best places to visit, eat and checked we had everthing we might need. Beds were very comfy .The pub was a bit to far for us to walk with a baby so we decided to go by car but if you fancy a walk its do able, we did the walk to the beach but it is a bit of a walk for me at least and longer coming back. everywhere we visited was only 10 minutes in any direction with plenty for us to see and do.Our dogs had a wonderful time ,Our new baby grandsons first holiday and he had lots of new sensory moments to go home with .We will look forward to visting another one of your lovely properties in the future,Thank you we had a wonderful mini break.

Excellent properties and friendly& professional customer service

We have stayed at various holiday cottages and apartments in Sidmouth for many years. The care and concern shown by the Sweetcombe team when my husband experienced illness during one stay wAs very much appreciated. We did have a quirky query with our property which was really quickly resolved . The properties at 2 Beach house and Tollymore are just perfect. We will always return. Thanks to all at Sweetcombe.

Disappointed

I am a long time customer of Sweetcombe's Cottages so was both surprised and disappointed by my stay at Porch Cottage. It was not a cheap stay so what my family and I had to put up with was unacceptable. The cottage had not been cleaned properly, floors were dirty, there were cobwebs and dead spiders, and the crockery and cutlery were unclean. The upstairs toilet did not flush properly and at about 9 every evening the downstairs smelt of sewage. The heating was dodgy, we had to sleep in jumpers and socks. But the biggest issue was on 2 occasions we returned to the cottage to find someone had been in there: lights had been turned on, cupboard doors hung open, furniture had been moved.
On contacting Sweetcombe they were nice but unhelpful. I was told they couldn't do regular spot checks on properties to ensure cleanliness as then they'd have to put up rental prices and as for who was entering the property - they asked the cleaners and housekeeper and they said they hadn't and they asked the owners who also denied. Interestingly though the Sweetcombe rep said that the cleaners /housekeepers do sometimes have to pop in and the owners do to but would usually let her know. She also said 'maybe we should change the key code'. You think??? Wouldn't advise renting Porch Cottage. I didn't sleep the whole time for fear of who might enter the property.

Dear Sara,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience staying at Porch Cottage. We deeply value your feedback, especially as a long-time customer of Sweetcombe, and we sincerely apologize that your stay at Porch Cottage did not meet the high standards you rightly expected.

First and foremost, we want to assure you that the security and comfort of our guests are of utmost importance to us. After thoroughly investigating the concerns that some cupboard doors were open on your return to the cottage, we confirmed that no one except your party had accessed the property during your stay. Being an old cob cottage with some wonky floors and walls, cupboards and doors will swing open unless closed firmly. We understand how unsettling it must have been to feel otherwise and want to assure you that we would not grant permission for an owner or trade to enter the property whilst a guest is staying unless agreed with the guest beforehand.

Regarding the cleanliness and maintenance issues you encountered, we apologised for the oversight. While we strive to maintain a high standard in all our properties, we acknowledge that, on rare occasions, things can slip through the net. This is not the experience we aim to provide. We take your comments very seriously and addressed them with the cleaning team immediately to ensure this did not happen again.

We are committed to rectifying any issues as soon as they are brought to our attention, and we would happily have assisted with the cleanliness, toilet flush & heating issues to ensure you had an enjoyable stay. Unfortunately we were not afforded this opportunity having only been informed of these after your departure. We regret that our conversations following your email on departure did not fully resolve your concerns and hope we can restore your trust in us with a more positive experience in the future.

Kind Regards
The Sweetcombe Team

Personal with attention to detail

Super company with fantastic customer service. Queries were dealt with quickly, with staff following up to make sure things had worked out. On arrival at Pear Trees the house was clean and spacious with recently fitted bathrooms and kitchen. Adding a welcome hamper and useful information guide with personal tips was a great idea. Nothing was too much trouble, which made a huge difference where you have a family of children with additional needs. Would happily recommend and use again when we return to the area.

Lovely apartment and amazing views

Lovely apartment and amazing views, high end finishing throughout the apartment, shame a pub across the road ruined it, wasn’t aware so if you like being kept awake until 1am on Friday and Saturday night then your be fine. Reported to sweetcombe and Polly did phone Saturday morning but that was it , you lay a lot of money to stay here not to have a pub opposite and not a nice one. Shame this wasn’t stated when booking as I’m sure a lot of people would be put off,
Cleaning wasn’t great on arrival, someone dirty socks left in a draw when we arrived and the toilet and loo brush left disgusting toy pat but had to clean it when advising sweetcombe of this they had no answer and just wanted to get out of it. You don’t pay £200
To stay here real let down, do t treat customers great only when they don’t have problems

Thank you for your feedback and for highlighting the positive aspects of the apartment on Exmouth sea front, such as the high-end finishes and amazing views. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your stay was affected by noise from the restaurant opposite. In the five years we have been letting this apartment, we haven’t received any complaints regarding noise before or after your stay, but we appreciate your perspective and will take your comments into consideration.

We sincerely apologize for the oversights during your stay, such as the cleanliness issues and the items left behind. This does not reflect our usual standards, as we have not had cleanliness complaints before or after your stay from this apartment. We would have been happy to replace the toilet brush and remove the socks immediately if we had been made aware upon your arrival, and we regret that this wasn't spotted on the changeover.

Thank you again for your feedback, which helps us to improve. We hope you might consider staying with us again under different circumstances.

So please I found Sweetcombe Cottages

So please I found Sweetcombe Cottages. Had a wonderful stay in Rosemary Cottage over the last week of May into June. Nothing was too much trouble for the team and answered / responded to all our questions quickly and efficiently. Was a pleasure meeting the owner and her family who made us feel very welcome and checked in on use daily. I would have no hesitation in recommending this company.
A little about Rosemary Cottage, what a delight, the pictures do not do this cottage justice. Was blown away about everything..
Location is great, Sidmouth is a gem

Cancelled the cottage we had booked for our summer holiday. Unable to offer a suitable alternative. Now left high and dry for a summer holiday stay. Not even willing to offer any kind of good will gesture. The manager we eventually spoke with didn’t seem to really care.
Appalling customer service and definitely will never use again!!!

Dear Guest,
We are sorry to read this review and we were deeply saddened to cancel your booking for August 2023. Unfortunately the owner went against their contract and required their property back for personal reasons. This was a very rare occurrence and we contacted you as soon as the owner informed us, 5 months in advance of your booking. We offered you 2 alternative properties in the same village as your first choice, one of the options was a larger, better standard property with private parking having agreed your dog with the owner as a one off- however this was declined by yourselves and a full refund was provided instead.
We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, shown by our 4.8/5 rating of 3852 Feefo reviews.

HARDING HOUSE, TOPSHAM

Four of us (two couples) stayed at Harding House, Topsham early in December 2021 and had a wonderful time.
The house - is really comfortable and has everything you could wish for. Kitchen was large with comfortable seating for six or more people. More than enough crockery, cutlery, etc, which allowed us to use the dishwasher (having stayed in many holiday rentals this is the only property where we didn't have to wash up by hand due to lack of crockery etc). The lounge is excellent with lots of seating and table space. Bedrooms are very good size and comfortable and are served by excellent bathrooms.
Parking - good to have a parking space as Topsham could prove a bit of a problem without one.
Outside - unable to comment on outside space as a bit cold to sit out in December!! However it looked a reasonable size with plenty of seating available.
Heating - We did play around with the heating a bit as us ladies feel the cold more, but usually worked it out so were warm enough when in the house.
Cost - With four of us staying we also found the price very competitive against other letting companies. I have to say that the facilities were exceptional compared to many other places we have stayed both home and abroad.
Location - excellent and only minutes walk from the High Street with it's quirky and interesting shops.
Could not fault this house and found the booking system easy.
Will definitely use Sweetcombe again and will return to Topsham, which is lovely, and must be even better during the warmer months.
Thank you for making this a really happy stay for the four of us - it was just what we needed and re-charged our batteries for the coming months.

Heaven in Sidmouth

We arrived at our holiday apartment in Sidmouth at the end of November and were immediately astounded by the décor, quality and cleanliness of it all. There was artwork everywhere, the apartment was very well appointed indeed - it even had Alexa looking after us. It didn't take long to link it to our Amazon Music account and it added a great deal to our experience.
All the plumbing, electrics and equipment worked faultlessly. The TV reception was good and the bathroom was both spacious and well equipped.
Being a short walk from Sidmouth Beach and above the local Tesco meant we were destined for a relaxing and enjoyable break. In November! The staff at Cottage Holidays were wonderful to deal with and very friendly. All in all, we would always use the company because their accommodation is so reliable and so fully appointed.
Well done, Cottage Holidays! and a great big thankyou from both of us!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, though we are sorry to hear about your experience from four years ago. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you faced during your stay.

At the time, we did our best to address the issues you reported. We immediately investigated the situation and made every effort to resolve it to the best of our ability. Unfortunately the building management company were not able to repair the blocked downpipe immediately which was causing
a slow water to leak through the wall. Our goal is always to ensure our guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and we regret that we were not able to fully meet your expectations on this occasion.

We appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve. If you would be open to giving us another chance in the future, we would be happy to personally help ensure that your stay is pleasant and issue-free.

Sadly Duped!

Consider this company to be rather false and fickle - lack of courtesy in responding to issues, quite simply, no contact at all! Customer relations? What customer relations? Years of visiting one cottage, beset by issues that needed resolving before any guests visited, eventually issues became too great - and we wiped 'Mug' off our faces - we were too easy going and tolerant - Poor standards, lack of basic cleanliness which soon become significant, cottage was filthy, tardy call outs for urgent and important repairs - decorators turning up unaware there were paying guests in, obviously lack of communication - shower room flooding, shower head hadn't been repaired in years and kept falling off - faulty heating - broken furniture - arriving to find cleaners hadn't finished cleans - contradictory information about recycling and rubbish collections - pillow protectors filthy and smelly, duvets unclean and stained, towels thin and discoloured and then owner introduced a charge for them!! All in all typical case of owner and agent not working together but with a mutual desire to take maximum revenue off guests without updating or considering that guests are valued. Very poor service. We will not be recommending this agency again, somewhat foolish on their behalf.

An Honest Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays Review

Upon arrival we found the property was relatively unclean. The Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays cleaners car was still parked in the drive when we arrived which suggests she arrived late and had to rush – which explains why some areas of the property had not been touched.

Finally, when the cleaner had finished, she took out a bag of rubbish and squeezed it into what was a very full outside bin. The council only collect the bins every fortnight in the area, so this was going to cause us some issues.

Once the cleaner had moved, we had to wait until the painters and decorators had finished painting the outside of the property before we could park up (the property was in a double yellow line area). Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays should have made us aware that this work was going on in the area (the painters and decorators were in the area all week).

Finally, upon getting into the property, we found the ceiling in the laundry room showed signs of an earlier leak and the fixtures, fittings and carpets were probably the original ones from when the property was first built (therefore looking a little tired and worn – carpets especially).

No fear. We’re not the kind of family to complain.

On the third day of our weeks break, we walked in to the property to find some flooding. The plumber was called out and fixed the issue within a few hours (great), but the clothes in the laundry room needed to be washed and dried again – fortunately nothing was damaged – a set of headphones got wet, but they still work – for now!

On the fourth day, the bin bags we put outside of the property were being attacked by Seagulls. We couldn’t put them in the FULL BIN so we had to bring them back indoors – not really a problem as they didn’t smell (food waste was squeezed into the remaining space of the outside bin).

To be honest, we could live with these things. We’re not the kind of family to complain…

HOWEVER… when we receive a borderline-abusive phone call from Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays questioning why rubbish had been left in the kitchen we ARE the kind of family to complain.

I can only assume that the cleaner didn’t leave enough time again to sort out the property prior to the next families arrival, and of course, there was now twice as much rubbish waiting to be disposed of in an outside bin that was ALREADY FULL.

No Sweetcombe Cottage Holiday discount voucher code would bring us back to stay with them again. This Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays review will hopefully be read by future holiday makers – who in turn a can leave their own Sweetcombe Cottage Holdays review.

1 star: Very bad – unacceptable experience, unreasonable and rude conduct... this sums up my experience.
