Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 305 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the customer service, finding it unhelpful, difficult to understand due to language barriers, and often leading to conflicting information or being hung up on. Customers also frequently encountered issues with claim processing for various medical services, including routine exams, specialized treatments, and prescriptions. Reviewers also reported concerns regarding pricing and coverage terms, and difficulties with the payment system, including being overcharged or having trouble processing payments online. The lack of in-network providers and the struggle to find suitable doctors were also significant concerns for many.

If I could give a lower score

If I could give a lower score, I would I’ve been working for two weeks to get a medication approved for my cholesterol because I’ve been allergic to all other traditional methods. I was basically told I had to have a heart attack or stroke and survive it to receive authorization on the medication still in the process of trying to get it approved feel so unvalued by my insurance company like my health is not important at all has caused me tremendous stress every time I’ve called United Healthcare I get a different answer and they’re telling me they didn’t get the paperwork for my doctor which know it’s not true. It is still being appealed. At this moment. My doctor office has done everything possible to get this thing approved know Healthcare Customer Service always have different answers. Nobody ever says the same thing they can’t even look in my file and give me the correct information of what’s going on with my Claims they don’t even have access is what I’m understanding every one of the customer service people constantly are on a low end quality for customer service.
Even the managers and the supervisors give different information everybody contradict each other not getting anywhere with the medication I need so desperately to lower my cholesterol

In my experience

In my experience, UnitedHealthcare has been the worst insurance provider, especially when compared to Aetna. The customer service experience has been extremely disappointing. Representatives are often rude and unhelpful, even when callers are simply seeking clarity about coverage or billing.
It is unclear how management oversees or addresses these ongoing customer service issues, but the lack of empathy and support is very frustrating—especially for people who rely on insurance during stressful situations.
To make matters worse, I was charged nearly $200 at a CVS MinuteClinic, despite actively paying for UnitedHealthcare coverage. For middle‑class families who already struggle with rising healthcare costs, this feels unfair and discouraging.
Overall, UnitedHealthcare appears to be completely business‑oriented rather than customer‑oriented. The high out‑of‑pocket costs, lack of transparency, and poor customer service make it very difficult to recommend this insurance to anyone who values reliable and compassionate healthcare support.

Regretting our change to UHC

New to United Health this year and already regretting this choice.
My wife's annual dental exam was incorrectly paid as a vision claim and we received a check for only $10.
Also, her actual vision exam and subsequent glasses were denied "due to previous vision claim "which was mistakenly coded by UHC.
Now we receive a letter stating they are in contract disputes with the largest provider network in our community and may not be available by June 1.
It seems like their contracts should coincide with our contracts so we are not left hanging mid-year.

UHC rips off its customers

UHC rips off its customers. Look at the $25 OTC credit for 3 months. UHC does not tell customers that they have this credit, does not tell them when the credit is expiring via email, text or regular mail. Most customers don't know they have this credit, nor are even able to access the internet to order. UHC makes millions, I would say billions of dollars from cheating members like this.

Don't waste your time signing up for…

Don't waste your time signing up for United Healthcare. The agents seem nice enough but the company as a whole is a waste of time.
First I was told that I was approved and to wait for my permanent ID card (10 days maximum).
When I called several times after the 10 days, nobody seemed to know what was going on.
Then I was finally told my application was pending. Now, more than three weeks after the policy was supposed to go into effect I received a letter of denial.
I will NEVER waste my time on another poorly run and poorly managed "company" with inept employees again.
I'll just keep my standard Medicare and hope for the best.

The rep mislead me when I signed up

The rep mislead me when I signed up for this plan, I was told that uhc paid up to 4000. on dentures but when I went to the dentist I found out they only cover 50% on dentures. What's worse when I called UHC I couldn't even speak to anyone in the USA. I won't be using this next year. Don't know how ya'll get away with falsely advertising the plans.

BEWARE referrals required & do not trust list of In network providers as many are no longer accepting UHC

Turns out effective 1/1/26 UHC (who is admin for my People's Health Choices 65 HMO-PPO Medicare Advantage plan) started requiring referrals & prior authorizations for majority of specialists like cardiologist, urologist, gastroenterologist, ENT, dermatologist, just to name a few. This is a major hassle for both patients and doctors offices. Referrals are only good for 6 months then have to be renewed. I found out today that even though 7 endocrinologists (all at same location) show on UHC app as in network, those doctors stopped accepting any new patients (only allowing existing patients to stay) with UHC coverage due to poor payment of services. So BEWARE, even if their app shows in network, you need to contact that doctor to verify if they are accepting. I found out about these issues too late. If I'd realized then I would have changed to a different provider by 3/31/26 deadline.

I purchased the plan and did biggest mistake. App is pathetic. You cannot access payment history. And every bill has past due amount to pay. When you reach customer service every time they have different statement. If you try to chat they cut off chat without resolving the issue. I have confirmation that I have paid premium but customer service says I hv outstanding balance. A big no no to these scammers.

My review should be minus 5 stars

My review should be minus 5 stars. This insurance sucks. They take your payments and they cover nothing. In November I had a 9 day hospital stay. My final bill was over $475,000!!! They covered next to nothing. Do not get United Healthcare Insurance

Payment Portal Constantly Broken

It is like pulling teeth to make your online payments with how confusing and frustrating it is and how their system is constantly broken.
You would think that it was almost malicious in nature.
I've done their little online chat multiple times and every time they try to assist nothing they suggest works.
The little circle on their site just spins and spins for hours on end.
I've tried refreshing it.
I've tried clearing my browser history.
I've tried deleting all of my payment methods and updating them. Nothing.

This company is the biggest joke I have ever seen and I have never experienced such piss poor Customer Service. You're the largest healthcare provider in the world. You would think that you're online presence and payment portal would work once in a while.

Waste of time and money

I am trying to get a gap exception for an ENT doctor. There are none in-network for 100 miles. My husband cannot hear out of one of his ears. I have called them on 5+ occasions to try and get help with this. Each and every “advocate” have told me something different. One said to go to the ENT to have them submit the gap exception form. One said to call a phone number that was only for medical personnel. One said to just ask an in network doctor to submit it for me (with no other details). One said they have a form that I can fill out but that form will take 10-12 business days to send me. They gave me a case id for this, so I called them 3 weeks later, after not receiving said form, and they said “there was an update to your case that there is no form”… so someone updated my case and decided not to tell me about it??? I have been sitting around waiting for this stupid form. They have the dumbest customer service that they are clearly paying dirt cheap for in India, meanwhile making 450 BILLION dollars in 2025. Screw UHC. Screw America’s “healthcare”.
