Absolutely gutted. I'd been saving up for a long time, for a good quality vegetable planter that would last me a few years, so I could grow my own food, and hopefully 'earn back' my investment. I finally bit the bullet and spent £175 (eeek!) on a 1.8m VegTrug - the grey wash version, from Charlies.co.uk, which arrived today.
On opening, I already knew things weren't right.
Let's start with the good bits - this'll be quick. It's well packaged, the packaging is pretty, and very eco friendly (everything is paper and card). Unfortunately, that's pretty much where the good points stop because, frankly, the packaging is streets ahead of the actual product (they must have a good branding team).
Taking the bits out, everything felt so light, like it was made of bolsar wood - it's clearly made from some super fast growing wood, probably chemically forced to grow as fast as possible, sort-of pine (or equivalent) that is essentially a 'wood mousse' that can barely hold itself together. As I took bits out, I had one leg that already had a bit broken off along the grain, planks where the eyes had fallen out (there are so many eyes in the wood!), meaning there's holes everywhere. I literally lightly scuffed a wooden piece on the cardboard box as I took it out, and a chunk flaked off! The wood is so poor quality, it literally cannot hold itself together.
With the holes in the wood where the eyes are, the poorly drilled holes, and the plastic feet that have no holes in them (basically plastic bowls that the feet sit in), there are literally moisture traps EVERYWHERE. How this thing is supposed to last 3-5+ years (as quoted in the description) is beyond me - no chance. Just the feet rotting in their water-capturing plastic shoes alone means this won't last more than a year.
As there was absolutely no chance I could fit it all back in the box and return it 'as new', I decided to at least protect it with some furniture protector before building it - which seems to have been a mistake as it just caused more bits to flake off - it was just like painting a croissant. It's a grey wash colour, which I was looking at closely to see if might protect the wood a bit, but it is a literal 'wash', as in, it's been vaguely shown some grey pigment, but the coverage is so comically thin, that it will do absolutely nothing for weather protection.
Everything about it screams 'cutting every possible corner'. A complete waste of money, only made worse because it was so expensive - I thought given the cost, I was buying something that would last. Take my expensive lesson and steer well clear!
I had a problem with an ancillary product and emailed the company. They responded almost immediately, understood the issue I encountered and resolved the problem.
Good company, good products, good service.
Recently purchased two wall huggers to brighten up a patio. I didn't receive a shipping dispatch until 5hrs after the items had been delivered. Fortunately I was in.
The wood is very light. Not so much softwood as tissue paper, I will be surprised if it has any longevity at all. The cross beams for the legs are badly drilled and don't line up. I have a suspicion that profits are being put before quality as I expected for the eye watering cost.
We have had a Vegtrug for many years and it's been great. Some poles needed replacing on this now old model. It was no problem and they were quickly arranged and dispatched. Excellent customer service!
Unfortunately, over the years I had lost the clamps for the covers that go over the trugs. So, from the intail email to the quick delivery of the products, the eperience as fantastic and I felt well looked after as a customer.
Trug arrived in good shape. Unfortunately one leg was drilled incorrectly.
Customer service was great, and replacement part arrived the next day.
Easy to assemble, and looks good.
Time to plant!
I am a 68 year old woman,Just bought it Dec 2025, had no problem putting it all together, just make sure right at the end you put the screw in the middle of the surrounding boards first as you are just one person it can be tricky. The wood is very light, hence why I was able to do it myself, saying all that, i love it, bought the greenhouse cover and self watering system at the same time. I bought the 1.8m. Will put mesh in the holes of the self watering trays, get the mesh at Tesco as it is the veg mesh bags you put your veg in, cut the bottom corner off on each sides to stop lots of soil entering into the water. My daughter has the smaller one, and has it for all the fresh herbs for the kitchen. Great idea, I would like it in a higher quality wood really, the design is good. I am ready for growing, make sure you put a mixture of compost/ dried manure or fresh if you have it/ and something for air like Perlite. I did 5 -50lt Wicks compost, one Wicks 50lt dry manure/ one large bag of Perlite, all mixed together. Looking forward to fun growing again.
Due to 'poor/lack of full information' on the VegTrug website I ordered the wrong size (90cm instead of the Medium Classic 60cm Frame).
The issue was handled very professionally & promptly by Niki (Customer Services Representative). Got my full refunded as promised & a correct one on its way.
Would have been '5 *****' & no issues if the website had been more 'detailed' when I ordered.
Niki Metaj in Customer Service was so helpful and was efficient in knowing exactly what I needed. I love love love my Veg Trug and both my sisters have them too, I would highly recommend them to anyone.🤩
I had a problem with the vegtrug I bought where one the supports rotted. I contacted their customer support and they did a superb job. Niki sent me a full replacement without any issues. I would definitely buy from them again because of this.
Easy enough to put together but pretty pointless item. Bought as a gift from wife but for example tomatoes need supports and the Veg Trug does not allow for this. You are better off just buying a tomato grow bag. Everything I tried to grow failed...may say more about my gardening skills but it was supposed to get me interested in gardening and its done the opposite!
Ordered 2 veg trugs.
One was damaged on arrival.
Replacement parts sent.
So far so good…….
2 days later a further set of replacement parts arrived, and we are talking BIG packages.
Requested they be collected, only to be told I had to dispose of them myself.Appalling customer service.
Had to do a 20 mile round trip to dispose of them .

Very pleased with the product but even more impressed with the company.
My Veg Trug was a Christmas present that wasn’t opened until 4 months later. There was a problem with two of the large pieces being split. I called them up and after sending an email with pictures of the damage, replacements were sent and arrived within a week. Very impressed with this customer service.

Bought a 6ft wide classic vegtrug with the cover add on to keep everything I want to grow enclosed and bug free. Putting it together was simple, takes a bit of time because of the many pieces to put together but easy enough to do. I wasn’t sure if it came with a liner inside to avoid contact from soil to wood but it does. It flaps a lot and overhangs so just used a small stapler and it’s really easy to fold the liner and staple it down so it’s not visible. I’m only a beginner for growing veg it’s my first full year of trying and so far so good. I have planted around 30-40 seeds and after 1 week pretty much all of them have germinated earlier than predicted. I have a few bulb onions that just need a bit more time but so far really impressed. The cover condensates quite a bit so called customer services which was quick, they advised in the summer, unzip the first layer and allow it to breathe (there is a second layer that’s breathable and stops bugs) and then in the evening zip it back up. Really pleased with the whole thing.

Don't buy any Veg Trug Item. I ordered a bee hotel and a 2 tier Poppy Veg Trug.
The bee hotel is tiny and shoddy, with cardboard tubes and will not last - not worth the £19.99!.
My 2 Tier unit came without any bolts and I cannot put it together. If you call them, all you get is a voice mail to which they do not respond.
No reply either to my email so I now need to contact my credit card company to try to recover my money..
Caveat Emptor - buyer beware.

If you are thinking about buying a Vegtrug item. Stop. The quality is absolutely appalling. I purchased a £180 self watering herb container. The wood is very weak, almost like balsa, it will not last more than one year. All joints are mis-aligned and the whole frame has been put together very very badly. I had to remake the whole frame. The supposed self watering plastic trays are half the size of the base, so are pretty much useless. Screws were missing and incorrectly sized.
I cannot explain how bad the quality is. You would walk away in a garden centre if it was £70. Steer well clear of any Vegtrug wood products.
