About Vets Now

Pet emergencies can happen at any time – including when your regular vet is closed.

That’s why our nationwide network of out-of-hours pet emergency clinics are open through the night, at weekends and on bank holidays, so we’re ready and waiting to provide expert pet emergency care when your regular vet is having some time off.

Our pet emergency clinics are the pet equivalent of A&E and our purpose is to give you and your pet the care and support you deserve, at the time you need it most, whether it’s four in the morning or in the middle of Sunday lunch.

Vets Now provides this trusted service to more than 1000 veterinary practices across the UK — from over 60 dedicated out-of-hours clinics and two 24/7 pet emergency hospitals. In total, we treat around 200,000 small animals every year — our highly-skilled team works hard throughout the night, weekends and Bank Holidays. So whether you’re in Aberdeen, Belfast or Portsmouth we’re there for you and your pet when you need us most.

We’ve also pioneered other ways to help pets, pet owners and the veterinary profession, such as our comprehensive referrals service and providing our staff with industry-leading training and development opportunities. We also support the pet blood transfusion charity, Pet Blood Bank UK. Meanwhile, our two hospitals — in Glasgow and Manchester — are home to some of the UK’s leading specialists in the field of emergency and critical care and provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sunday visit

Everyone we met at the clinic was so helpful and nice and understanding. Especially our vet Joanna who could not have been more kind and extremely professional. The only quibble I have are the fees which seem excessively high.

Misdiagnosis led to my dog dying.

My dog was limping after popping out on Saturday morning. On Sunday morning I took my 3 year old cocker spaniel to Vets Now in Eastbourne with a severely swollen leg. I asked the vet if this could be an adder bite. He said it wasn’t and diagnosed that he must have a foreign body in his paw which has caused the swelling but it was so swollen he couldn’t investigate it.

By Sunday evening it was going black and we were very worried so called Vets Now again to say that it he had blood and plasma coming out of his nail beds. The vet said that this was normal and was cellulitis.

By Monday morning he was very ill and we took him to our local vets who immediately put him on a drip and did blood tests which confirmed he had damage to his liver. Latet that day we had to take him to a specialist 24 hour veterinary hospital in Brighton, who immediately diagnosed it as an adder bite. Unfortunately too much time had now passed for an anti venom to be effective. He survived the night in intensive care but he was too ill to continue and had to be put to sleep this morning.

Vets now charge a great deal of money for an out of hours service which I don’t mind. As emergency practitioners though, they will see acute cases and demonstrably don’t have the pre-requisite experience in this case.

The care costs finished at £5,500 and our lovely boy is no longer with us. Vets Now charged c£460 for a 15 min consultation and sale of the wrong drugs. I would have paid any money for the right diagnosis and care.

If you find yourself in this terrible situation you may find that vets now is your only option but please ensure they investigate all the options. My experience was that it was a highly profitable organisation that didn’t put the animals welfare first. When I called them and explained his symptoms 9 hours after my consulation (not drinking, plasma and blood oozing from his nail bed and his leg turning black) I should have been asked to bring him back in.

As a family we are in complete shock. Nothing will bring him back but this was all so avoidable.

And your standard response says everything.

Sunday afternoon

Positives - the surgery was lovely, the veterinary nurse was nice.
Negatives - £320 for 10 mins, no treatment was given to my cat, how can £320 be justified?
We were told to go to our vets the next day to get blood tests and they would have the report. Went to our vets the next day at 18.15 - no report!

The vet missed a very high temperature

The vet missed a very high temperature, asked if she was a 'feral' cat (she's a totally homebound British shorthair) when she screeched when the nurse badly applied an injection. Another one had to be brought and the vet re-did it.

Had to take her to anothe rvet the nexst day where she had an almost 40C tempersature and need to be put on a drip and start antibiotics immediately

Six days later we got a phone call from Vets Now and a text informing us they had received our cat's ashes and we could come and pick them up. No call since to apologise for this mistake. Horrifying incompetence.

I had to visit the emergency vets at 1am for the first time ever with my dog due to him swallowing fondant and the cling film it was wrapped in!

I deeply appreciate the time you took to explain everything and answer all my questions. Your patience and kindness didn’t go unnoticed.

Which our dog is now back to his usual cheeky self :)

Hung up on me

I made an
telephone enquiry about how to get an animal health certificate for travelling abroad and the cost associated with this document; it's not a simple process so a certain amount of dialogue was required to get the facts, these were provided very efficiently the end of the conversation I made a comment akin to £350 is a lot of money. The response I got was and I quote "do stop moaning" and the lady slamed the phone down on me !! Maybe being rude to customers it's part of their training I have never ever been spoken to like that on the phone it all my years I will not ever be using this company as there are plenty of alternatives.

Fantastic Vet. Admin Charge Steep

The out of hours vet we saw was fantastic and cannot fault her expertise and care. We also can't thank her enough for making our pet a lot more comfortable than he was.
I was however taken aback that a £25 administration fee is charged to go through insurance when I had to pay the full bill upfront to the practice and make all the contacts with our insurance company, as well as filling out the insurance claim form myself. Not sure £25 is a fair price when almost all the administration was done by me.
