Way way way over priced
Way way way over priced. Steak Pie and one single scoop of potato at £25 is RIDICULOUSLY overpriced.

I wouldn't usually submit a review for a city centre pub such as WhiskiRooms but as it billed itself as 'The Best Scottish Restaurant & Bar in Edinburgh' I felt I needed to push back on this Trmpian level denial of the truth: it isn;t and its not even close & I speak as an Edinburgher born bred & educated - I've seen many such hostelries come & go; I've been to whiskiROoms several times in the past: unremarkable but sufficient would have been my judgement on those past visits.
This visit was below that.
It started with one of those waits you can experience when you are asked to wait at a sign just inside the entrance to an establishment but well back from where the staff 'reception'/ hub is giving you that exposed feeling to the seated patrons but seemingly invisible to the staff.
After only a few moments those staff huddled around their till like a group of trainee surgeons round their first practice cadaver looked up - didnt; say anything, just looked up in expectation - 'do you have table for two please'? ventured my partner...
More silent conferencing round the till before a sad wee gadgie ventured forward with a couple of menus, indicated where he was going to lead us & we followed, unsure.
We arrived at a small table where he put the menus down & sadly stared at them for a moment or two & then remorsefully announced to the menus (not us) that the lamb was off; he took himself off without making eye contact & left us to ourselves.
I have to say outside temperatures were such that the brass monkeys were on amber alert so a wee bit of eye contact and a welcoming pretence would have been appreciated; but maybe the staff are shgd & fagged as they say in CLockwork Orange & who could blame them in this festive season in Edina - i hate xmas too; but then again, not our fault and maybe we should've taken the hint & turned heel there & then.
There were several other minor issues with staff - eg the rose is sweet (sweet as a lemon), having to stand by as staff marched by you or through you when going to the loo in the cramped set up, etc
The food was standard pub food but restaurant prices - £20 for a burger (with aging brioche bun) & a mini goblet of (frozen) chips; £26 for wee slice o salmon fillet & 2 potatoes halved to take up more space on teh plate; a pint on menabrea was teh kick in the nuts final touch - there are no cheap pints in central edinburgh outside the chain the nzi guy owns but £7-50 is highwayman stuff
Note that unlike many other establishments, no feedback encouraged on the receipt: you now know why.
Take your quids elsewhere is my advice; we dropped into a restaurant up the high street later on & even thought they were near closing the staff were so accommodating to our pain in teh hing-end enqry to a future booking & showed us round - a real contrast!
My partner & I have been to New Olreans so we know what the low end of customer service is - this wasn;t it but never again in this entitled extorshoning hovel
