Suffolk Oak unfinished doors

Suffolk Oak unfinished doors were perfect, superb quality and as good as the pre finished ones we were matching up (just trying to be a bit more budget driven). The customer service was excellent when i asked for there recommendations to finish them. If you consider they could have been a little awkward and told me to buy pre-finished 👍. The white Suffolk oak wasn’t such good quality although it did the job. Just felt the difference in price didn’t reflect the difference in quality but overall a good experience. Still need 4 more doors and won’t hesitate to return here

Poor Quality French Doors

I needed a pair of glazed French doors for a conservatory I was building, and initially found something that appeared suitable at Wickes. However there were certain important dimensional details that weren’t quoted on their website, and when I queried it with them they didn’t have a clue. I noticed in one of their reviews that XL Joinery were named as the manufacturer, and their brochure showed ostensibly the same item, but WITH the requisite dimensions.

Their brochure was full of flowery words about quality products made by experienced craftsmen, so I decided to order from them, via one of their approved distributors. They duly arrived quite quickly, shrink-wrapped and with plastic corner protectors, but with minimal protection along the edges, resulting in several small but noticeable dents along the long edges – big enough to require rubbing down and filling, but not enough to reject them.

These doors are made from ‘engineered timber’ – effectively blockboard made from strips about 30mm square, glued side-by-side to make planks, then finished with 5mm MDF on both faces. One side is slotted to take the glass and the adjacent edges chamfered at 45°, they are then cut to length, the joints are machined, and finally the pieces are sprayed with white paint. The pieces are then assembled around the glass pane.

After unpacking them I noticed that the paint had cracked at the bottom of the v-groove formed by the chamfer on the stiles (the side rails) at each corner joint. I wasn’t that concerned initially as they would have to be painted again before they were hung. However as I cut the hinge recesses, and started to trim them to fit the frame, I notice that they would not hang correctly because they were flexing at the joints, and over time would probably fall apart unless I did something about it.

To cut a long story short, I had to machine 6mm from the face of each door with my router on both sides at each corner (16 locations!) then glue a patch of good quality plywood to bridge the joints between the stiles and the top and bottom rails. They were then filled and sanded flat to hide the repairs. This added about four days to the fitting process.

During the course of making the repairs it was clear that the ‘engineered timber’ was made from poor quality wood strips that contained some large knots, voids, and very irregular grain – the sort of cheap wood that might be used to make pallets. Furthermore the joint faces had been glued without the paint being removed first, with minimal glue, leading to more voids.

Another consequence of the frames being assembled around the glass is that if the glass ever gets broken, the only options are either to machine away the frame on one side to form a proper rebate, or scrap the door and start again. When I asked XL Joinery where these doors are made it turns out they are imported from Malaysia, clearly NOT crafted with loving care by skilled joiners.

Eventually the doors were fitted, and they do look quite smart, but that was no thanks to XL Joinery.

Ravenna Oak pre-finished Door

Had this internal door for 8-9months and the veneer started lifting and splitting - these doors are not cheap and expected them to last. Had to pay to have it fitted and then pay again when I finally got a replacement. Did ask the company if they would pay for the fitting a second time, as it was through no fault of mine, not a penny!! AVOID THESE SHOODY DOORS AND THE COMPANY THEY ARE RUBBISH!!

Really disappointed by the quality of…

Really disappointed by the quality of the XL Joinery doors and the subsequent response from Moda. . Less than 3 weeks after fitting, the majority of our 15 doors started to peel at the top and bottom corners. At £155 per door I expected better! Initially I was offered less than half the total value back (I declined). Apparently they thought it was water ingress from using a mop to clean my floors! Not sure what the alternative was but interestingly, I don’t use a mop to clean the ceiling so not sure why the top of the doors are peeling too! I was the offered a replacement or refund but when I asked for compensation for the associated costs I.e a joiner to refit replacement doors (at a cost of just under £1000), it got frustrating. They’d only pay this if I selected XL Joinery doors but when there were none that I liked I had to resort to my credit card company for support. So as it stands I’m out of pocket for doors that are less than a month old but are faulty…..not the outcome I was looking for! Save yourself a headache and avoid Moda and XL Joinery.

UPDATE just to reiterate, I have raised with Moda and have not reached a satisfactory conclusion.

Wrong picture on Website

I purchased my door through Door Superstore. On the website, the front of the door is shown with the T&G boarding continuous between the top and bottom of the door. When the door arrived, it has a visible frame at the bottom of the door. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this door, but have decided to continue. I think the website photo should be changed. The product is well made, and there were no issues with the delivery.

A sticky aftermath!

The doors are very well made and look classy. The three stars are because that two of the glass doors had so much sticky polythene on them they left horrible marks on the glass once the polythene was removed. Having cleaned the glass, we have noticed permanent scratches on it, which rather spoils the look.

Hi Chris,

We are really sorry to hear that there are scratches left on the door from the polythene. This isn't something that usually happens but if they are found to be faulty we can replace them for you.

If you don't mind sending pictures and more information back to the supplier who you purchased the doors from, they will be able to escalate it to us.

Kind regards,

Zoe

Worth waiting for as the doors were out of stock. Excellent quality and very well packed. The driver carried them all the way from the road and into the house for me (about 80 metres). I have only hung one so far and i looks great. I am feeling very smug. Not bad for a 75 year old 4'11" lady!

Con-artists XLJoinery & Doorsupersore &…

Con-artist XLJoinery & Doorsupersore & CMO
Please be aware that XL Joinery as manufacturer/supplier and Doorsuperstore as seller have colluded to steal from customers. They are doing this in a very sophisticated way. There is my story: Doorsuperstore has tricked me to buy two fireproof doors promising indoor delivery by their manufacturer/supplier. After waiting for more than 2 months for doors to arrive, manufacturer/supplier XL Joinery brought wrong doors into my house. The doors were standard instead of fireproof and they were also heavily damaged. For 1.5 months employees from both companies were playing around to delay delivery of the correct doors. Now they both claim they cannot deliver into the house or pick up from the house because their drivers don't have liability insurance. They are also refusing to reimburse my money. Interestingly, they didn't have any problem to deliver wrong and damaged doors into my house in the first instance. I didn't agree at the time of purchase for doors to be left in front of the house as I don't have safe place and I cannot take them in house by myself either- as I am not strong enough. It is clear: they never ever wanted to deliver correct doors. They just wanted money. I lost £600 just for doors and I am in further loss of thousand of pounds because my property is not finished and cannot move back due to missing doors. Please stay away of these thieves.

Hi Penovski,

Thank you for the feedback.

We have looked in to this and we do apologise that the original issue was a sales input error. These things rarely happen but we are sorry it has in this instance and for that we apologise. We have however rectified the issue by delivering the correct doors to you, once they came back in to stock, and crediting you for the incorrect doors.

With regards to delivery, we haven't had any issues reported to us. We have always communicated that the delivery is a kerbside delivery. Drivers are not insured to carry doors. If they do that is at their own personal digression and liability.

Our sales and delivery teams work to the highest possible standards and should we find improvements can be made, we will action them as necessary.

We apologise again for any inconvenience caused.

Terrible with warranty not honoured. Buy at your own risk.

Terrible door provided and dreadful customer service afterwards. They have just blanked a warranty claim for a door that warped within months despite following all reasonable installation, coating and protection measures. Buy at your own risk as you will need to foot the replacement bill if the door fails. They take no responsibility.

Hi Darragh,

Thank you kindly for your feedback.

Here at XL Joinery we do the best possible to make sure that our customers warranty requests are serviced. There are times however when once we have carried out investigations, we find that install instructions have not been followed correctly, subsequently invalidating the warranty.

We have looked into your review and would like to conclude that this was investigated thoroughly and we can confirm that this has been discussed and our customer, your stockist, has been advised accordingly in accordance with our terms and conditions and the manufacturers warranty, which is held with them.

If you have any further correspondence, please revert back to your supplier.

Poor quality door

Purchased a 2XG external glazed pine door from Express Doors Direct in September 2021, contacted them on 29/11/21 & sent photos of veneer peeling on both sides of door. They were going to contact the manufacturer but I have heard nothing from either company. I have noticed that other customers have had a similar problem with the peeling veneer & wish I had never purchased this poor quality door.

We ordered the wrong doors as the image was unclear online. We then had to wait 2 weeks for these to be collected paying a further delivery charge for the correct doors to be delivered, which were delivered in a few days. The doors were returned 2 weeks ago and we still haven’t received a refund for the original doors. Despite chasing no further forward with refund!

Hi Katrina,

I am really sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the service you received from your chosen stockist. I have looked into your return and can confirm that your refund was returned to Building Supplies Online on the 14th of January, you would need to contact them in order to process your refund.

I can also see that you purchased the White Primed Solid Salerno initially and then return this for a glazed version. We have never had any issues previously with the visual representation of this door. I have also checked the description and specification tabs for this product and I can't find anything that is incorrect. If you can email xlcustomerservices@xljoinery.co.uk with further information on what was unclear I will look into this further and update the website.

We hope now that you have the correct doors that you are happy with the quality of the product, we would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Many thanks,

Charlie.

Salerno doors not worth the money 😡

I bought 3 Salerno doors 2 glassed 1 sold and I have to say for the money that I paid for them they are poor quality. The MDF runs right to the edge of the door and chips really easy the least little knock or if even catch the edge with the door frame it chips in my opinion the edge should be sold timber no cheap MDF especially for the price. Also the finish on the doors is very poor little lumps and bumps everywhere and also little bits of wood stuck to the under coat as well. All in all a cheap product for a dear price. Very disappointing.

Not the best company to deal with

The doors were a £150 more than the ones that wickes where selling that were exactly the same. But we wanted them delivered quickly so bought their doors, as wickes delivery was to long. If you try to phone them up with any Enquiries about your order you get put straight to voice mail, you leave a voice mail and no one gets back to you as the phones are not Man. One of the doors has a slight ding in it Where the forklift truck has Caught it.
