Zabbix is an excellent product for environments from small to very large in that it can be setup to monitor anything. It's low footprint for agents and focus on stability and scalability allows us to monitor thousands of machines with hundreds of thousands of metrics. The API allows any custom scripting you might need to build for functionality you might be lacking. Zabbix might not be suited for the "rookie" or SMB IT admin.
