Educational and entertaining

The zoo combines an education and entertainment in one gigantic place.
It’s clear that the people working there love animals, and they are happy to share their knowledge.

Check their website for the free “walking tour” between the exhibitions and sometimes see a feeding. It’s a great attraction for adults and children.

Absolutely heartbreaking to see this…

Absolutely heartbreaking to see this majestic animals laying waiti ngn to fade away.

The lion enclosure is an absolute joke and pure torture.

The polar bears are in distress and not healthy or happy in a way to tiny enclosure.

The brown bears enclosure has no greens for them and the enclosure is pure torture and looks dirty and it’s TINY.

The tigers has no space or nowhere to hide. Tigers love to hide .

The rhinos are the same. Absolute terror to look at.

Elephant should have at least tripple the size.

Pigs has next to Nothint to walk on.
Same with camels, lamas and the monkeys.

All in all theres very few enclosures that are ok. We’re talking under 5.

Unless all this changes I highly suggest all of us push for this horror chamber or a prison closes and puts the animals in to sanctuaries or safaris!

This is unacceptable and animal torture.

Dear Ivy,

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns.

We are sorry to hear that your visit left you with such a strong and negative impression. Animal welfare is the heart of everything we do at Copenhagen Zoo, and we take such feedback very seriously.

All of our enclosures and animal care routines are developed in close collaboration with zoologists, veterinarians, and behavioural experts and are continuously evaluated and updated to ensure the animals’ physical and mental well being.

We understand that enclosure design can look different from what people expect based on documentaries or safaris. While some enclosures may appear simple at first glance, many include elements not always visible to the public - such as access to off-exhibit areas, night quarters, and enrichment systems tailored to the specific animals.

We acknowledge that people can have strong emotions about seeing animals in human care and we respect that. At the same time, we remain committed to our mission: contributing to conservation, education, and the protection of endangered species through responsible zoo management.

Your observations have been noted and shared internally for review.

Kind regards
Selma, Copenhagen Zoo

Sad demented polar bear

Was looking forward to seeing the polar bears and brown bears however came away disturbed as the one polar bear appeared demented pacing back and forth, looked so sad and the enclosure wasn’t fit for purpose. The same is true of the brown bears. The enclosures are awful. A very sad experience. Please move these bears to more suitable premises.

Dear Lottie,

Thank you for sharing your concerns.

We understand your distress regarding the well-being of our polar and brown bears, and we appreciate your feedback. It is always difficult to witness an animal display behaviors that appear to reflect distress, such as pacing or repetitive movements, and we take these observations seriously.

The behavior you observed in the polar bear could be described as stereotypy, which refers to repetitive, goal-less actions like pacing or swaying. This is often seen in captive animals, especially when they are experiencing stress, boredom, or frustration. Similar to how some people might find themselves mindlessly scrolling on their phones—repeating an action without clear purpose. Just as scrolling through social media doesn’t resolve the underlying emotions for humans, stereotypic behavior in animals doesn’t solve the underlying challenges they face.

In the case of our bears, we are actively working to improve their enclosures and ensure that they have enough stimulation, space, and enrichment. Polar bears, in particular, have specific needs, including cold temperatures and large, varied spaces to roam. We are continually striving to provide the best possible care and are closely monitoring the situation, as well as working with experts to address these behaviors and ensure the animals’ well-being.

We deeply regret that your visit left you feeling disturbed, and we are committed to making improvements for the animals in our care.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you’ll give us the opportunity to show you the improvements in the future.

Sincerely Selma,
Copenhagen Zoo

Amazing zoo, good condition and helpful staff

Visited as a couple and we had a brilliant time at Copenhagen Zoo. Lots of different animals in good condition - it’s amazing to see polar bears, lions, elephants and many more. Loved walking through the Australian enclosure with the cockatoos flying straight at us to tease us. The facilities are clean and in good condition considering this is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. The staff was helpful and clearly understood the challenges of keeping the animals enriched when all their basic needs are met, particularly predators. Very easy to get to from city centre by bus. The food from the seafood stall was freshly cooked and tasty. This is included in the Copenhagen Card which is a bargain for tourists.

The only minor criticism I have is the limited selection of the zoo’s own souvenir merchandise for adults but that’s a tiny problem.

Probably a good Zoo but we will never know

2 stars instead of 1 because I'm sure the Zoo is amazing but we won't be able to visit.

I bought tickets a year ago but couldn't go due to our baby being sick.
Since the tickets are valid for a year, we decided to book another trip to Copenhagen to use them.
Unfortunately, the only available weekend is a few days after the validity of the tickets ends.

Believe it or not but the customer service won't extend the validity of the tickets for a few days, or even offer a discount.
It is even more stupid knowing that we will be coming with 3 new visitors!

This means that they'd rather leave 2 adults and a 2.5 years old boy unhappy, than gain 3 more entries... I really don't understand the logic behind this.

I am definitely not paying again for 2 new tickets to visit the Zoo.

A unhappy family.

UPDATE FOLLOWING THE ZOO's RESPONSE:
I had an exchange of 2 emails with your customer service.

As mentioned, as a customer service expert, this is not very flexible and customer oriented and not even business oriented.
Serious questions need to be asked to whoever is making these calls.
After all we only wanted to visit the zoo + you would have had more money to take care of the animals, if thats still the main priority....

Probably one of my favorite zoo…

Probably one of my favorite zoo experiences. I live in the Colorado in the USA and have even been to the famous San Diego Zoo, which I love The experience in Copenhagen did not disappoint. When we entered the zoo we were immediately mesmerized by the beautiful lion and lioness chilling neck and neck. The panda sat on her back and ate her bamboo and entertained us for the longest period of time. The other animals were active. They had a baby elephant and hippo. We could even walk through the kangaroo's enclosure. The giraffes were eye level with us and we were able to get a few ear scratches in. It was October, so not crowded.

Animal cruelty

The larger animals had very limited spaces. The leopard and polar bears were pacing back and forth. No enrichment. The monkeys had dirt flooring with very little toys. Just some branches to climb on and some other stuff they were clearly not interested in. The chimpanzees were kept in the rainforest area. Inside a building just before it. Limited light. No fresh air. Concrete flooring.
The lions also had very limited space. They were sleeping and and thankfully seemed relaxed at the time we were there.

In general. I felt bad after visiting. We left early and refused to spend any more money there.
When I go to a zoo I want the zoo to have enrichment for the animals. Big enclosures. And help contribute to wildlife and make people fall in love with species to protect them. This should be at a cost where no animals lives are put in to stressful situations in poor cages.

They had no places to hide away from humans. There was construction work when we were there. The leopard constantly tried to check if the door was open to go back to the cage on the other side, where it likely sleeps. Sadly it was locked. The space was about the same as a livingroom apartment. With nowhere to hide away from the sound or people.

No animal welfare

So sad to see the animals in tiny enclosures and cages. They look sad and tired. I'm used to a zoo with huge enclosures so this was a shock to me and my group. Never coming back

Bad experience with buying online tickets

I tried to buy tickets on zoo.dk and in the end I paid money but end up with pdf file that contained garbage in it instead of valid tickets.

Tried to contact company for solving this issue via email and was not getting response for one week.

Update 09.11.2022:
In the end everything got resolved and I got my money back from company.

I am still going to visit zoo with my family but this time I going to pay at entrance.

against humans

I enjoyed my trip to the Zoo before they started to demand a CoronaPass or corona test although almost everything happens outdoors. As long as Zoo follows this noncence and participates in this indirect forcing people to be vaccinated and/or tested, that is against human rights I will not support Copenhagen Zoo!

Hi

Thank you for expressing your opinion. I'm sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction.

A valid pass or test when visiting the ZOO is unfortunately not something we can get around. These are the requirements of the authorities if we want to stay open.

I'm sorry if it's perceived differently.

Kind regards

No customer support?

We were told at the entrance that our tickets can upgraded online to "årskort" within 24 hours, but when we got home the website didn't accept the code on the ticket.
I wrote a mail, but it seems to be ignored. (It's been 11 days.)
It's a shame because we'd like to visit again, but I don't want to pay more just because the website doesn't work and there's no customer support.

UPDATE: I eventually got contacted and we agreed that I buy the 3 årskort for full price and they will refund the difference.

Poor enclosures and animal care

Small, cramped enclosures with no natural benefits for the animals. The animals were clearly stressed and most had no way of cooling down in the hot summer weather. It was also commonly seen that most enclosures did not feature a way for the animals to “hide” from the visitors and be alone. Simply terrible and heartbreaking experience. Will not be visiting again!

Just a nightmare

I bought 2 tickets for the Tæt på giraffer Event.
On the ticket it is clearly staded that we gave to be at the meeting point in fromt of the mainentrace an 11.15. My wife and me been there already at 10.30 to make sure that we beeing on time.
As at 11.15 nobody from the Crew came out to the meeting point we went in to the ticket office and asked about the event.
A really unfriendly and unmotivated person informed us that the tour has already started as they have meet inside ( that is not what the ticket said) we can go in now and find them as they would wait for us( beside that this is already fare from beeing a good service, we tried that) of course nobody was waiting and we went back to the counter to complain. Even we are 2 people who defently not been picked up or been informed that that meeting point has been changed nobody want to take responsibility for this or help us.
All we got is a bad copy of a template that we can fill out to complain.

So all in all we bust lost 650 DKK for nothing else then waiting at the right spot
