Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 34 reviews, reviewers overwhelmingly had a great experience with this company. Customers consistently praise the staff, including guides and drivers, for their enthusiasm, knowledge, and helpfulness, making trips enjoyable and informative. Many highlight the excellent service, noting that arrangements were smooth, and the team went above and beyond to ensure a memorable and well-planned holiday. Reviewers also appreciate the quality of the holidays, which often include unique activities, varied landscapes, and authentic accommodations. The locations chosen for hotels were generally well-positioned and of high quality, with many enjoying the local and family-run options. However, some people were dissatisfied with certain aspects, such as the standard tourist routes in Bhutan, or the quality of some evening meals and accommodation in Tenerife. A few other people also felt that some subcontracted services led to communication lapses and less-than-ideal experiences, like noisy campsites or crowded yurt camps.

Tour of Bhutan

I did the tour of Bhutan at festival season with YellowWood Adventures. It was a good tour, the local company and the guides were excellent. We visited 2 festivals or tshechus, one in Thimpu and one in Gangtey. Gangtey was more intimate, nicer, though I was struggling with the altitude.
YellowWood is a small company and they were OK, though they 'disappeared' for 5 days before the trip, not answering phone calls and emails. I started to get worried at that point as they are not ABTA... They apologised and were responsive after that.
The only bad point is their packing list. They list antibiotics as compulsory to take for tummy upset (GP would not prescribe it on the ‘if-it’) and they list thermals, warm jackets, etc. Neither was needed, some days the temperature was around 26 Celsius. Wasted lot of space in the luggage for these items that were not needed. A list that it mor targeted for the season would be better.
In terms of hotels, it was hit and miss. Some were really good, some were downright bad. Most were far from town and the program mainly finished around 4pm and you were stuck in the hotel.

Thanks so much, Suzy, for sharing your feedback about your Bhutan festival tour. It’s lovely to hear you enjoyed the Tshechus and that our local guides made such a positive impression.
You’re quite right that we’re not part of ABTA, but we are fully bonded members of the UK’s Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust (ABTOT), which provides complete financial protection for all client funds, so you’re always fully covered when booking with us.
We’re sorry for the brief gap in communication before your trip. Unfortunately, one of your emails was missed due to a small technical hiccup on our side, and we’re very sorry this happened. Our lines are open 24/7, and we add every group to a shared WhatsApp chat 48 hours before departure so there’s always an easy way to reach us and your guides.
Your thoughts on the packing list and hotels are really helpful. We’re already reviewing both with our local team, and Sam will be back in Bhutan next month to review the routes and accommodation options in person.
We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and are so glad you enjoyed Bhutan’s incredible culture. We hope to welcome you back on another adventure with us soon.

Recommended by a frequent traveller

YellowWood put a lot of care into the itinerary and featured activities that were different from the "norm" in Bhutan. They also showed such a high level of care and consideration for my personal circumstances (partially sighted) that I felt fully reassured every step of the way. Fully recommended.

YellowWood. Not the bes

YellowWood sells itself as being somewhat more adventurous than the average tour operator. Well my experience was not that. We toured Bhutan on what was the standard tourist route. We saw the same other groups at several locations. It felt a bit like a convoy. Although the guides were good the experience did not go close to similar trips to the region with Wendy Wu tours. An example being the day severe weather blocked our way for some hours. Other operators guides quickly arranged food and drink for their clients. Not ours. Hotels were booked very late and not all reflected the original itinerary. some being very poor. The explanation given to us was the good ones were fully booked as it is the busy time. I enjoyed the trip but would suggest there are better alternatives especially if booking direct with an outfit in Bhutan.

Thanks for sharing your honest feedback. We’re really sorry to hear the trip didn’t feel as adventurous or smooth as you’d hoped.
This particular departure coincided with one of the busiest times of year in Bhutan, with several festivals taking place and limited accommodation options available. That, along with a few logistical challenges due to the weather, meant the experience didn’t fully reflect the usual YellowWood feel we strive for.
We’ve already been in touch with our local team to review this tour, and Sam, our founder, will be travelling to Bhutan next month to be on the ground again and refine the routes and logistics.
We take feedback seriously and want to ensure this adventure delivers the sense of exploration and authenticity our travellers expect.
We really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. We’re really glad you still enjoyed the journey, and we hope you’ll consider travelling with us again so we can show you the kind of adventure we’re known for.

I'll definitely use YellowWood again.

This was my second trip with YellowWood and I can't praise them enough. My first was to the World Nomad Games in 2024: the second started as a trip to Ethiopia but when conditions changed in the area we planed to visit, Sam contacted me to discuss options and we came up with a two centre trip to include Madagascar. All the arrangements were smooth, all the team - including the local partners - were responsive
and a joy to deal with and it really was a great success. And special praise to the way they handled unexpected events in Madagascar: an occupational hazard of taking the road less travelled is that sometimes plans have to change at the last minute and this happened to us. The local team were completely on top of it, anticipated work arounds and at all times we felt completely safe and in good hands.
I'll be back.

A professional and friendly…

A small but professional and friendly organisation. From our recent experience in travelling to Usbekistan, we can highly recommend them. The price is competative but standards very high. Hotels were great and restaurants superb. X3 very generous meals per day. Outstanding, was the lunch we took in the work room of an embroidery store. Lots of delicious salads and meats throughout the tour but our tour guide looked after my wifes vegetarian needs very well too.
Our guide was informatative with an enclopaedic knowledge of Usbekistan and European history from BC to 20th century as well as cultural and social history, and geographic links with other countries. He ensured best places in restaurants and frequently beat the crowds at busy tourist spots, having great relationships with tourism and local people.
All entrance fees were paid, making this a very economic tour.
YellowWood are great at communication. No query goes unanswered, almost immediately. A slip up with a hotel room, for one of our party, was dealt with promptly with a response from local agents in Uzbekistan and YellowWood staff in England. In all, x4 responses to resolve the issue. Very impressive.
As you will see, we were very happy with our tour and have no hesitation in recommending YellowWood.

This company goes the extra mile

This company employs staff who go the extra mile to ensure you have a memorable trip. Their attention to detail is exemplary and their availability when responding to queries is instant. They must have staff on duty 24hrs a day.
The in- country guides (Uzbekistan) are very knowledgeable and have a genuine desire to ensure everyone is looked after and able to get the most from the tour.
We were taken to many interesting and off the beaten track places which made the trip very special.
Although the temperature in Uzbekistan was dropping after their scorching summer, it was still very hot by UK standards and a little more down time in the heat of the day would have got our vote. High quality hotels were used and we appreciate the company using local and family run hotels rather than the international chains. Excellent choice of restaurants and I appreciated Kamol’s efforts to find me vegetarian options. Would absolutely use YellowWood Adventures again. Thank you team

YellowWood made my travel dream come true

From the first contact to the last goodbye by our guide, my experience with everyone at YellowWood exceeded my wildest expectations. Their level of professionalism along with their love of adventure makes this the best service of this kind imaginable. We rode reindeers with the herders in Northern Mongolia and it was one of the top experiences of my life. If you want to experience unique travel opportunities that focus on the place you are visiting, with an emphasis on local providers, at an affordable rate, look no further. YellowWood is the absolute cream of the crop. They make it anout the whole journey, and what a journey it was!

Morroco experience

Highly recommend doing the YellowWood Moroccan adventure. Seamless transitions from the City to the atlas mountains. From the moment of meeting our driver at the airport for transportation to our Riadwe felt well care for. Flexibility in booking extra days to explore the city. Custom hike with an experienced guide. We had some weather issues (thunderstorms out of season) and had to rejig our hiking schedule. The Kasbah staff and our guide took care of everything without issue. Wonderful food, people and scenery. The Toubkal trek is challenging but seeing sunrise in the mountains is worth it. We are a couple in our late 50's in good physical shape. We enjoy poking around new places and soaking up the atmosphere. If you like getting off the beaten path and travelling to see and do something different I would highly recommend YellowWood Adventures.

Mongolia was Amazing!

My sister, friend, and I had a fantastice trip to Mongolia! As three older women with some age issues related to walking, we were a bit nervous about embarking on this adventure. However, we needn't have been as our drivers and guides were there whenever we needed them with so much patience. We didn't miss out on anything. And, before the trip, the Yellowwood staff also quickly answered all our numerous questions.

This tour offered us something I have never experienced on a tour before. From home stays to eating at local establishments, we really felt like visitors to the area and not just tourists looking on from a distance. We got to know local people which isn't easy given the language barrier. But our guide was always there interpreting for us and our driver too even though he couldn't speak English, he also made sure we connected with everyone we met on the trip.

I can't say enough about how well this trip was planned and carried out for us. A trip of a lifetime, really!

Mongolia Adventure

We have just returned from a nine day trip to Mongolia. We looked at many different tour companies and chose YellowWood Adventures due to their responsiveness and their ability to put together an itinerary that was tailored made to our exact requirements. We were not disappointed.

The highlight of the tour was a stay with a family of Eagle Hunters in Western Mongolia living in a Ger. Very much a bucket list ticked off for us.

The tour was seamless with everything provided and no hitches at all.If you are concerned that Mongolia is not really on the tourist map and therefore have doubts about travel to this beautiful country rest assured you will be well taken care of.

Riding + Culture with my 11-year old daughter - the perfect balance

I went riding with my 11-year old daughter and as you can imagine, there was not a lot of room for error relative to my traveling days of old where you are free to take things as they come.

Ladakh for the over 70s…9 - 20 July 2025

Being guided through landscape and Buddhist culture of Ladakh with a knowledgeable and resourceful guide. Stopping at home stays especially interesting, with friendly hosts, giving insight into Ladakhi life. Rigzen led us gently through the
treks, adapting as necessary to cater for (my) aging knees and shortage of breath on uphill stretches. Rigzen was calm and sensible on return from Nubra when faced with (exaggerated) reports of road closure on the pass. Also safe and careful drivers in a comfortable car. We always felt safe and learnt a lot.

Five Stars for Mongolia with YellowWood!

We recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Mongolia with YellowWood Adventures, and we cannot recommend them highly enough! From start to finish, everything was thoughtfully organised and expertly executed.

The itinerary struck a perfect balance between adventure, cultural immersion, and breathtaking natural beauty. We had the opportunity to stay with a local nomadic family, which was a truly special experience.
We explored vast and remote landscapes and gained a deeper understanding of Mongolian traditions—all in a way that felt authentic and respectful.

Our guide, Enkhbat, was knowledgeable, warm, and passionate, and looked after us throughout the trip from keeping us well informed to ensuring we had the best ger and food!
Our driver, Puredavaa, was excellent—negotiating the off-road tracks, river crossings, and sand dune crossings expertly. He was always on the lookout for wildlife and any photographic opportunities for us!

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way. If you’re looking for a unique and enriching travel experience, we wholeheartedly recommend booking with YellowWood Adventures!

May Trans Bhutan Trail

I did the Trans Bhutan Trail via Yellowwood which was great. Haba (local tour guide) was incredible and would definitely recommend . I have done multiple tours through different companies and he is world class.

Accommodation is great however a lot of it is buffet food - would have been nice to have some local restaurants mixed in.

Itinerary changed which is fine (and fully expected) but I think it would be beneficial for more people from YellowWood to do the tour to understand the itinerary they are setting.

Hi James,
Thanks so much for your feedback. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the Trans Bhutan Trail and that Haba stood out. He's a fantastic guide and we’ll pass that on to him.

Your points about the food and itinerary are really helpful. We agree that adding more local restaurants would be a great touch and we’ll be speaking with our local team about that. The last-minute itinerary tweaks were made by your guide based on recent experience, but we’ll look at updating the official version to reflect this better.

Sarah from our team has done the trek and helped produce the overview webinar on our website, she's always happy to chat in more detail with guests but we are hoping to get more of the team out to Bhutan soon!

Thanks again for travelling with us. We hope to welcome you on another YellowWood adventure in the future.

Wonderful drivers/guides and experiences

Our wonderful Rumbo a Picos drivers/guides Darios and Alejandro were incredible! They made sure we always knew meeting times and places, what was happening for the day and went out of their way to make alternative arrangements when weather or other factors meant we couldn't do what was originally planned. Loved their sense of humour too.
We loved the places we visited too (just wish I knew how to pronounce them).
