Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 62 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many customers reported issues with unexpected and unclear charges, including tolls, late return fees, and inflated prices for services or vehicles. Reviewers also frequently encountered problems with the service, such as long waits, disorganized systems, and being left stranded without a car. The payment process was a significant source of frustration, with many reporting disputed charges, difficulty with refunds, and issues with credit card payments. Customers also experienced problems with the vehicles themselves, including receiving cars with existing damage, incorrect models, or mechanical issues like flat tires or summer tires in snowy conditions. Though some people were satisfied with the staff, describing them as pleasant, helpful, and professional, others found them unsympathetic or incompetent.

Hassle free experience

We were full of trepidation having read some negative reviews about Alamo just prior to our trip. We booked our rental two months before travelling and were greeted by very helpful staff at Stansted Airport Car Rental Village. Both Euan and Dilara could not have been more helpful at each end of the rental, respectively. We arrived in the dark and photographed all around the car for evidentiary purposes if need be (not needed), and the whole experience was hassle free. The rental fee was excellent value.
All in all, a good experience.

Ben and Deanie, great reps!!

Outstanding service from Alamo, Bristol airport 😊. Please send me the rental agreement immeditely next time though, thanks. Ben was outstanding when I picked up the car, truly an asset to Alamo! Deanie was incredible when I brought the car back, extremely competent and very helpful in sending me my rental agreement finally. Deanie was incredible, poles apart from Europecar reps!!! Both reps mentioned were incredibly good and both an asset to Alama Bristol
airport. Thanks Deanie and Ben, a great company, Alamo! ❤️❤️🍀Truly exceptional service, Deanie and Bin excell in all areas of customer service, truly a credit to Alamo!

Scammers

Scammers! They rented me a car with more than 22,000 miles/33,000 km on the tyres (they admitted this when I inspected the tyres with them for the return) and then pretended that a scratch on the aged tyre with a depth of 0.5mm that was there before I took receipt of the car would need to be assessed for costs by their technicians. They said they would inform me of any costs and deduct from my 237 euro retainer. I refused to sign their statement, which said I had damaged the car in an accident - I definitely had not. They then charged my credit card the full deposit before I had even left the office. I'll report it as a fraudulent transaction the moment I get home. I recommend blocking your credit card before returning the vehicle if you don't want to be scammed. Strangely, they were charging another customer for hundreds of pounds of 'damage' as I arrived. Avoid!!

Update: The BVRLA dispute resolution service that you are referred to is partly funded by Alamo/Enterprise itself. Hence, very little interest in addressing fraudulent, yet presumably quite profitable, business practices. As you can imagine, BVRLA basically responds that "you signed, you should have noticed any damage, you better suck it up". So be prepared to go a step beyond this, as it is merely there to waste your time.

Bad service at Stansted Airport

Long waiting time in Stansted until the car is ready even though we showed up in time and no one was there. Then we were rushed through the rental agreement and signed unknowningly a roadside assistance package. We tried to reclaim our money at car return and via mail but no luck. Beware of this untrustworthy car rental company!

Choose other rental company

Choose other rental company! Rented a car in Zürich airport for a week. Took pictures of the car to be sure Alamo didn’t try to claim anything as their reputation is bad. Getting back and 1,5 week after they now start to claim for damage that already was on the car.
Yes they are a bit cheeper than the other but you have to take pictures before and after and expect that they try to claim extra from the customer. Not OK COMPANY POLICIES.

Alamo UK - don’t rent from them unless you buy insurance!

Rented a car for one week out of Alamo Heathrow. Returned Jan 31st. Wound up with some small scratches due to a speeding car that cut me off in a roundabout. All reported on the 24th. Scratches were so minor when returned the car the employee couldn’t see them. He told me they hold a damage charge and the cost would be minor if anything and I would get a refund shortly. Enterprise DRU (parent company) has been holding £2,000 since then and after numerous emails the only response is it takes up to 60 days to process….meanwhile no estimate/proof of invoice for scratch repairs (they probably keep renting out the vehicle and probably charging every subsequent renter for the same thing). So it has been five weeks and I get the same runaround of they are awaiting additional information. What a scam to hold onto money hoping you forget!!
Update - After copying the CEO and disputing this transaction via my credit card who needed a detailed invoice showing the cost to repair (vs an estimate) I finally got my refund back! Over two months of follow up.

Dishonest Company! Avoid!

This company are nothing but scam merchants. Avoid.

I handed the car back in perfect order and they were ‘too busy’ to look at it. As we had had no issues they said we could leave the keys in the box. I subsequently got a bill for £1321 for a ‘missing parcel shelf’. This shelf was 100% in the car under the boot floor when we left as we even checked the compartment to make sure we hadn’t left anything in there. The rolled up parcel shelf was in there.

Their ‘proof’ is a picture of any empty boot - not even a picture of the compartment it is stored in!

Complete scam. I now have to fight with this dishonest company through my credit card as they do not answer ‘claims’ via their formal process - all you need to know to know this is a deliberate scam or why would you not engage and admit your error?

Glasgow & Aberdeen Hubs Excellent

Having been stung by a few rental companies in the UK and IE, I have always returned to Alamo, or the National Group.

This trip was for a funeral in Bannockburn, and using the pre check check in made the experience easier.

Both the staff and the car were like a dream and I cannot fault their service and support.

Why? They go through the car with you, both ends and any support during your usage is welcomed.

Thank you to the Glasgow hub!

Rubbish

Rubbish. Car not properly registered to us so unable to get hold of breakdown services when we got a puncture. Had to spend over 220 dollars to buy a new tyre. Charged 215 dollars for 1 way car hire that we were never informed about. Nothing good about this experience. Promised call back to discuss all the problems but never heard from anyone. Not recommended.

AVOID PRE-PAID VOUCHERS !! PLEASE READ

Booked a car in March 2024 via Alamo Uk prepaid voucher costing $1004 for a full size luxury SUV, saving off $160 for collection date - 22/12/2024 in Tampa USA, upon our arrival , Alamo tampa did not have any full size luxury SUV available and stated there is only 2 of you, please choose a vehicle from a lesser class and you will be only charged for class, I explained I did the booking via pre paid, Tampa Alamo stated we have a credit card on file and it will be credited with the difference, due to my wife disability ( that's why we booked a full size SUV not to do with how many people in our party plus if we book a certain class, it should be available to collect) and the needed to take medication, We took a vehicle which only cost $815, on the date of return , I asked again about the credit / refund, explained again what happened and I did pre-paid, Alamo started that I would get $189 refund and gave me a receipt for $815 .
I returned the UK, 7 days pasted, still no refund, called Alamo UK, They can't help as the voucher/ my booking was transferred to Almao USA, I called them, The credit of $189 was on file, Alamo said they would escalated to accounts and I would receive a call / email and refund within 24hrs, nothing, 7 more days pass, I called Alamo USA again, they told me it was escalated to accounts and they are working on a way to pay you !!! I stated that they have a credit card on file, can't you refund that ?? Alamo said No, we can only issue a refund to a credit card when there is amount due ( cost of car rental ) but in my case there is no amount due, as I did pre - paid , we can't refund you as its not our policy !!!!
I called Alamo UK as I prepaid through them, they didn't understand, declined talk to Alamo USA on my behalf and stared that it wasn't there concerned, I asked both Alamo UK and Alamo USA for the escalation process so I get my refund / credit and they both said you can't escalate this matter !!!
7 more days past , called Alamo USA again, the agent stated once again it's with accounts and he will escalate it and I will get a call/ email and refund with in 24hrs, Still nothing, now 24 days later.
So please avoid doing pre paid as if your class of vehicle is not available and you take a lesser class, you will be over paying and chasing a refund like myself, Its a shame Alamo use to be a class leading rental company and now just seems to be running a scam !
Paid $1004 in full 9 months before collecting vehicle, non was available, took a vehicle which was worth $815 with Alamo knowing for well that they won't issue $189 difference as a refund due to not being their Policy.
Completely unacceptable how you treat your Customers.

Alamo Stansted Airport

Pre booked an economy car in Alamo Stansted but it was not available on the day so they gave me a complimentary upgrade with no extra charge. I paid the €240 deposit and off I went. They had agreed to lock in a refueling price per litre the same as all filling stations on the way. The fuel I used was charged to the deposit and cost me €40 which was unreal for the driving I did on the day.
Next time I land in Stansted I'll be renting a car from Alamo again. Friendly staff and quick return of the deposit. 5 stars

Bad experience with Alamo/Enterprise at Heathrow Airport

Very bad experience with Alamo/Enterprise Heathrow Airport Christmas period 2024 - ended up costing us far more than the fixed fee quoted at online booking. We attempted to get resolution by phone (were told to email); by email - never got any response. We have used Alamo/Enterprise many times over the years with no problems, but this time the experience was bad and they are now on our lifelong block-list.

Great service.

We arrived in Manchester from a long haul flight to pick up car, having booked from Australia. After a few issues of clarifying the booking, the staff were great - especially Musti and Thomas Carr. Musti made our experience so easy! He was extremely knowlegeable, talking to us to establish our main requirements and made us feel comfortable straight away. Musti made our experience simple.

AVOID

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID Alamo at all costs
I hired a car by pre paying the full amount months in advance and booked it through alamo.co.uk, when I turned up at tampa airport to collect the car we was told there was no cars avaliable and had to get a hotel or lyft/uber and claim a refund, after being stranded at the airport because our phones wouldn't work on 5g or airport WiFi and no sign of a taxi, I returned to the desk and had a huge argument with the staff to get me to my destination as I needed to be there that night, they managed to give me a car after all, which turned out to be a right nail, cameras falling of the car, interior had been severely damaged, scratches all over the car, etc, etc upon returning the car I had spoke to the staff about the experience where they offered me $270 refund as well as 2 days free rental on my next visit, I chased up the refund and with alot of pass the parcel, me being the parcel between uk and USA alamo both stating it is each others responsibility, after alot of arguments Tampa had issued a refund for the full amount to UK alamo that then should have refunded me but UK alamo keeps saying they do not do refunds even though they received the money from USA alamo, still waiting for the money now and they keep saying it has nothing to do with UK alamo even though they have said they received my refund and just simply refuse to pass it on to Me

I booked with this company

I booked with this company, based at Glasgow airport, for the first time 3 months ago. Their policy does state that I would need to leave my credit card details. I only had a debit card and was told that would be absolutely fine. 3 months later, I booked with them again - expecting the same to apply. Not so. I was told that I could not have the car I had reserved as I did not have a credit card. I said that my husband would ring them with HIS credit card details. This was not acceptable as his signature was required. So I was stranded, in the dark, with my suitcase and no way of reaching my final destination. Thank goodness for Europcar, without whom I have no idea what would have happened. I had a rental car from them, paid for with my debit card withing 15 minutes. Absolutely shocking service from Alamo. Will not be using them again
