Complaint

I rented a Skoda or similar, but they gave me a Kia, and the representative told me they are similar 😡. Unfortunately, the car's body had several damages, and the pickup and delivery process took a long time. The car wasn't clean enough. Besides they offer me an insurance which I already had.In short, they wanted to make more money by any means possible.
The car didn't have navigation an it cause a lot of problem for me.

Your claims are misleading and need to be corrected. You in fact received a free upgrade to a higher vehicle category at no extra cost. Reservations are always made by group/category, not by a specific car model, which is clearly stated in the booking conditions you accepted. Expecting a guaranteed specific model is incorrect.

As for navigation, this is not a standard feature in all vehicles. It must be specially requested at the time of booking, and since it was not ordered, the vehicle was provided without it.

Insurance was offered only as an optional service, never as an obligation. To suggest that our company “wants to make more money by any means possible” is unfair and untrue.

We stand by the fact that all procedures were followed transparently and correctly in line with the terms of your reservation.

Your review is false and misleading. There are no hidden fees – all rental conditions are clearly stated in the contract and on the voucher you received from the agency.

The standard fuel policy is Full to Full when a valid credit card in the main driver’s name is provided for the deposit. Since you did not have a credit card, you were automatically placed on the Full to Empty option, which you accepted and used. In this option, fuel is charged upfront. To claim that fuel was charged “without permission” is simply not true.

Debit cards are accepted only for rental payment, not for the deposit. This rule, as well as the fuel policy, is clearly written in the rental terms and on your voucher.

We categorically reject your accusations. Our procedures are transparent, documented, and were correctly applied in your case.

I had a horrible experience with Avia…

I had a horrible experience with Avia Rent a Car and would not recommend them to anyone.

The car itself had multiple scratches and damage that they didn’t properly document during pickup. When I returned the vehicle, they tried to charge me for damage that was clearly already there, and it turned into a long argument. It felt like a scam — like they were just trying to squeeze more money out of me.

Overall, a completely unprofessional and stressful experience. There are plenty of better, more transparent rental companies out there — do yourself a favor and avoid Avia.

Your accusations are false and unacceptable. Every vehicle is inspected and all existing scratches and damages are documented with the customer present at pick-up. At return, the inspection is repeated in the same way. Only new, undocumented damage can result in a charge.

To suggest that Avia “didn’t document properly” or that this is a “scam” is completely untrue. Our procedures are transparent, documented, and applied equally to every customer. Claims that we try to “squeeze money” are baseless and misleading.

The inspection process exists to protect both parties, and in your case it was conducted correctly. We categorically reject your accusations of unprofessionalism.

After disputing unfair charges (€200 for a forced insurance), Avia Rent a Car blocked me on Facebook and Instagram instead of responding to my emails and messages. This behavior clearly shows their lack of transparency and professionalism.

________________________

Update: Avia keeps replying that I “freely accepted” their insurance. The truth is that at Split Airport I was refused the option to leave a deposit and told I had no choice but to pay €200 for their “Avia Supreme Mini” insurance.

This was completely unnecessary since I had already purchased full insurance via CarJet when I booked the car. Despite explaining this at the counter, they refused to release the vehicle unless I paid again.

Afterwards, in their emails, Avia falsely claimed that I “had no credit card.” My bank has confirmed in writing that my card is indeed a credit card.

I have uploaded photo evidence (rental contract + bank proof) in my Google review for transparency.

I have also opened an official case with the European Consumer Centre (ECC), who will now review this abusive practice.

Your review is misleading.

You accepted the offered insurance option at pick-up and used it for the entire duration of the rental. The charge was therefore not “forced” but applied strictly in line with the rental terms you agreed to.

Furthermore, your emails, messages, and posts were answered, but we cannot tolerate false claims made publicly without any supporting evidence.

Our procedures are transparent, documented, and fully compliant with the agreed conditions.

It’s the worst I have ever experienced

It’s the worst I have ever experienced. Initially nice but returning the cleaned car that was totally perfect the evening before driving to the airport suddenly had some major scratches while returning. I know they were suggesting an insurance for that case which I didn’t buy and my gut feeling was that it s mandatory to leave the care in perfect condition. Thus I prepared the car day before as I never did before! But than 3 people confusing me and rude customer service. Never ever anyone should rent a car at that crappie place. BE CAREFUL! And I suggest to be at least two watchful persons while returning your car!!!

We must strongly correct your statement. The vehicle was inspected together with our staff at the time of pick-up and was documented as completely free of any damage.

At the time of return, however, it was found with new and extensive damage – both the rear door and the front door were heavily scratched with white marks on the black vehicle. These damages were not present at pick-up and were officially recorded by our staff at return.

According to the rental agreement, the renter is fully and solely responsible for any new damages caused during the rental period when no insurance coverage has been purchased. Attempts to deny responsibility are unacceptable, as the facts and documentation clearly confirm the condition of the vehicle before and after the rental.

Our company follows strict, transparent procedures, and in this case those procedures were applied correctly. The claim that the damages were not caused during the rental is unfounded and directly contradicted by the signed inspection records and photographic evidence.

Watch out for extra charges renting from Avia Zadar airport…

I hired a car from Avia from the Zadar airport office for a week in September 2025. The car was good but the company did their utmost to rip me off for additional fees. An additional €50 for picking up the car at 9.00pm. €12 for cleaning the car (the car was returned in good condition) and finally tried to rip me off for an additional €12 as the car was in their opinion not full and €35 refilling fee. I took the car back and managed to get €6 more in the car. Watch out very unscrupulous and unprofessional

Your review is misleading.

Out-of-hours fee: The €50 charge for vehicle pick-up at 9:00 p.m. is not arbitrary — it is clearly stated in the rental terms and in your voucher prior to arrival.

Cleaning fee: This policy is also clearly listed — either prepay €9 at pick-up or return the vehicle clean, otherwise a €12 fee applies.

Fuel policy: The vehicle was returned with a full tank, no shortage of fuel was recorded, and no refueling charge was applied.

All fees were applied strictly in line with the rental conditions you accepted before booking. Accusing Avia of being “unscrupulous” is therefore unfair and unfounded.

Terrible experience!

Terrible service!

This rental company does not accept online bank cards, which makes the whole process extremely inconvenient. When I approached the desk for help, the staff were rude and unprofessional. Instead of offering solutions, they practically pressured me into renting under their conditions and paying for their insurance.

Absolutely not recommended under any circumstance!

Your accusations are unfounded.

It is clearly stated in your voucher and rental conditions that only a valid physical credit card in the main driver’s name is accepted for the deposit. Presenting an online/virtual card does not meet this requirement. This rule is standard in the international car rental industry and has nothing to do with “scamming” or “pressure,” as you claim.

Because you did not fulfill the contractual requirement, the only possible way to proceed with the rental was by taking our full coverage option. This was properly explained at the counter. Suggesting that you were “forced” is misleading — you simply did not meet the agreed conditions.

Your review ignores the facts and unfairly attacks our staff, who applied the rules exactly as stated in the documents you received and accepted before booking.

Avoid this company at all costs

We booked a vehicle for our family holiday with Avia Rent a Car via a Broker, Orbit.

When we arived at Split Airport on the 15th August, after a lengthy queue, I was told by the Avia Rent a Car operative that they would not be able to provide me with a vehicle as my Visa Credit Card, issued from First Direct Bank (Part of HSBC) was not acceptable as it was from a "Digital Bank". I reviewed the terms and conditions that Orbit had sent me and this says that "Virtual Debit or Credit Cards may not be accepted", but this was a physical VISA card and so this condition didn't apply. Despite arguing my case the agent wouldn't accept it and left me, my wife and 3 kids stranded at the Airport. Our only option was apparently to take out some very expensive and additional insurance. Very convenient!

I was forced to go to the next door hire company, Enterprise, who were polite, friendly and efficient, but, because I hadn't pre-booked anything I was forced to pay an additional 275 Euros to hire the same type of vehicle (VW T-Cross). Needless to say they accepted my VISA Credit card without any issues at all.

I see other customers are experiencing the same issues. I don't beleive this company can be trusted and so I would avoid at all costs. There are plenty of other, reputable companies at the Airport.

I also think Avia's aggressive response to the feedback to the other customers who have experienced this attempt to extort additional money from honest customers speaks for itself.

With 1 IN 4 CUSTOMERS GIVING A 1 STAR REVIEW, I think they need to start taking some ownership for the issues they are causing.

Your review is misleading and omits key facts. As clearly stated in the rental terms and conditions and on the booking voucher you received before arrival, a valid credit card in the main driver’s name, issued by a recognized bank with sufficient credit line, is strictly required to secure the deposit. Cards from online/digital banks, prepaid cards, or any that do not meet these conditions are not accepted. This rule is transparent, standard across the car rental industry, and applied equally to all customers.

The additional insurance you were offered was not “extortion” but the only available solution after you failed to meet this basic requirement. To portray this as a scam is false and unacceptable.

You were not “stranded” by Avia Rent a Car – you chose to ignore the clearly stated rental conditions and then attempted to shift the blame onto the company. The fact that another provider accepted your card does not alter the binding terms of your confirmed reservation with Avia.

All requirements were known to you in advance and clearly stated on your booking voucher. Suggesting otherwise is misleading and damages only your own credibility.

Serious penalty fee for entering restricted zone without verbally informed

There is a newly launched restrictions for driving into the restricted zones in the old town but it was never verbally mentioned by any staff at the time of key collection (when I arrived, it's nearly office closing). When later found out after stepping into the trap, the staff just said it was well written in the office and I should have seen it. What a good excuse! The penalty could be Eur1600 if keep entering the restricted zone repeatedly (without noticing)! Maybe the staff think it's time to close the day and no need to inform the drivers as they "should have known"?

Besides, when email to ask insurance matters, it was never replied.

Your comments are misleading. The obligation to respect local traffic regulations, including restricted zones, lies entirely with the driver. Entering prohibited areas such as the old town is clearly not allowed and is the responsibility of each renter to avoid.

In our office there is a large visible notice explicitly warning about the prohibition of entering the old town zone. In addition, there are numerous official signs throughout the city, as well as a large LED panel on the road before entering the old town, clearly indicating the restriction.

To claim that you were not informed is incorrect. All renters are responsible for following traffic signs and local regulations, and penalties for violations are charged by the authorities, not by Avia Rent a Car.

Scam, stay away

This campany knows how to scam costumers leagally. They suddenly did not exsept my credit card for the deposit so we never got the car that we allready paid for. The only Way they could solve it was if we paid for insurence (twice the cost of the car) and its funny how they allowed me to use the credit card for insurance and not for deposit. They allsow would not give us a refond and we ended up having to pay another rental Company for a car. We allsow heard from some lokals that they deliberetley dobble book in hope that someone cant pay for it.

Your review is entirely false, defamatory, and deliberately misleading. The facts are clear: as explicitly stated in the rental terms and the voucher you accepted, a valid credit card in the main driver’s name is a strict and non-negotiable requirement for securing the deposit. You did not meet this obligation. Instead, you presented a virtual bank card and a debit card, both of which are explicitly not accepted and clearly mentioned as such on your voucher.

Because you failed to comply with this basic condition, the rental could not be released. You were nevertheless offered alternative options in line with the rental terms, but you refused every solution provided. To then accuse Avia Rent a Car of a “scam” is baseless and unacceptable.

It is also important to clarify that no payment was ever made to Avia Rent a Car — you paid your agency directly. Since you did not fulfill the rental conditions, the agency does not issue refunds. Any issue regarding refund lies strictly between you and the agency.

Your further allegation of “double booking” is a complete fabrication. Avia Rent a Car operates transparently, legally, and in strict accordance with signed agreements. False and malicious claims of this nature harm only your own credibility and will not alter the facts.

Rental conditions not respected- too expensive

Bad experience.

Local rental company in Split Airport did not accept my gold Mastercard for deposit because alleged from an Internet bank. This was not mentioned in the rental conditions given by the intermediary rental operator. So, better coordination and operation is needed between those companies. However, I blame Avia, because I had good experiences with the intermediary in the past

The local rental company offered an expensive insurance which was even more than the total rental price.

Got the car finally from Sixt, even 35% cheaper with no additional insurance required. No problem with my credit card (which includes insurance).

Never again.

The worst car rental experience

The worst car rental experience – Avia Rent a Car

We have traveled to more than 30 countries and rented cars many times, but we have never experienced anything like this.

We purchased full insurance, yet after a minor damage the company charged us €3,100, claiming we should have called the police. This requirement was never explained to us at pickup – on the contrary, the employee even joked that “we don’t have to worry about anything.” The condition existed only in the small print of the contract, which is completely misleading.

On top of this, they withheld money because we returned the car earlier and also charged €50 for “out of hours.”

It is unacceptable to pay for full insurance and still be trapped with hidden terms and outrageous charges. Completely unprofessional, misleading and disrespectful towards customers.

We will never use Avia Rent a Car again and strongly warn other travelers to avoid them.

Reply from Avia Rent a car

Your allegations are entirely false, misleading, and unacceptable. The rental terms and conditions you signed make it absolutely clear that in the event of any accident or damage, regardless of the insurance purchased, the police must be called, an official report obtained, and a breath alcohol test (alkotest) performed. These are legal requirements in Croatia and standard practice in the car rental industry. By failing to follow these obligations, you invalidated your own insurance coverage and became fully liable for the resulting damage.

To claim that these rules were “hidden” is simply untrue. They are clearly stated in the contract, explained to every customer at pick-up, and included in the documentation you received. Ignoring them does not relieve you of responsibility.

Regarding your additional complaints:

The out-of-hours fee is a standard surcharge, transparently listed in the rental conditions, and applied equally to all renters.

An early return does not entitle the renter to a refund for unused days — this is also clearly specified in the contract.

Your accusations of “scam” or “misleading practices” are baseless. The charges applied to you are a direct consequence of your own failure to comply with the clear, written, and explained rental conditions.

Avia Rent a Car operates with full transparency and in strict accordance with the signed agreements. Any attempt to shift blame onto the company by distorting the truth only undermines your own credibility.

Never again

No rent a car company will ask for 80 euro to send someone to check the vehicle at 04:00 am ! Simply provide a key Dropbox ! Also fiat panda is not fiat 500 which I have booked !!! Never will use Avis again !

Reply from Avia Rent a car

Your claims are misleading. The €80 you mention is the standard out-of-hours service fee, clearly stated in the rental terms and voucher. When a client requests vehicle pick-up or return outside of published working hours, staff must be called in, and this service is never free of charge. A key drop box is not sufficient for such cases, as vehicles must be inspected in the presence of staff.

Regarding the vehicle, you booked a Fiat 500 but received a Fiat Panda, which is a higher category vehicle. This was a free upgrade, not a downgrade. No client is ever placed in a lower category than the one reserved.

All procedures in your case were transparent, lawful, and in line with international rental industry standards.

They scaremonger people into paying for unnecessary insurances

The people behind the Avia rental desk in Split Airport were very cold and unwelcoming. Despite having paid for extra insurance when we booked through BSP, which covered a wide range of issues, the person behind the desk tried to scaremonger us into taking Avia's insurance. They told us that our initial insurance was limited (when it was pretty comprehensive) and that if we had an issue on the road, Avia would offer no assistance. But if we paid an additionnal 300 to 500€, then they would be happy to assist. They also push on you a cleaning fee, as well as a prepaid petrol tank fee and finally, a 50€ fee to board a ferry in a country known for its many islands. These tactics which go against EU regulations are not acceptable.
Finally, they gave us a car on which they had forgot to check the tire pressure (the car signalled it after 20 minutes).
I would not book through Avia in Croatia again.

Reply from Avia Rent a car

We must firmly correct several misleading statements from your review.

The insurance you purchased was with the booking agency, not with Avia. Third-party insurance does not remove the client’s obligation to leave a deposit on a valid credit card at the rental desk. This rule is clearly stated in the rental terms and is a standard practice in the international car rental industry. Our staff are obliged to inform clients about these limitations and to offer Avia’s own insurance products, which guarantee direct coverage and immediate assistance. Presenting these facts cannot be described as “scaremongering” but as ensuring that customers are fully aware of their responsibilities before taking the vehicle.

All additional fees you mentioned (cleaning, prepaid fuel, ferry usage) are transparently listed in the terms and conditions, which every client accepts before confirming a reservation. Suggesting otherwise is incorrect.

As for the tire pressure warning, all vehicles undergo safety checks before being released. In the peak of Croatian summer, due to extremely high ground temperatures, tire pressure sensors may activate even when tires are within normal range. This is a common and temporary technical alert, not a sign of negligence.

We regret that you were dissatisfied, but your review does not reflect the reality of the rental conditions, which were fully respected and applied according to law and industry standards. Avia has zero tolerance for misinformation and will always defend its staff and procedures when they are wrongly portrayed.

Naciągacze z polityką wyłudzania dopłat lub niesprawne liczniki paliwa pozwalające na doliczanie kar.

These scammers are deliberately trying to extort extra fees or are offering cars with faulty or modified fuel meters.
I think they're either scammers or using cars with faulty or modified fuel meters.
Before returning the car to Pula airport, I filled up the tank at a station about 20 km away, until the fuel gun went out.
Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the fuel gauge wasn't showing the maximum, and the range was still 450 km, which didn't increase after refueling. During the drive, the range gradually increased, and upon reaching the airport, it was exactly the same – 540 km – as when I picked up the car. The fuel gauge still wasn't showing the maximum, as it had been right after filling up.
The AVIA employee wanted to charge me a €45 fine. I was furious about the constant lack of a maximum fuel level indicator, but fortunately, I still had time before my flight.
I took the keys from them and drove to another station, 7 km away. I filled up with 3.6 liters of fuel, and it was pouring out of the filler neck.

When I arrived at the airport, the fuel gauge was still not at maximum, and the available range had dropped to 490 km, so I arrived at the airport anyway.

I asked how this was possible.

The explanation was unclear, and they wanted a receipt from me for filling up, about 5 euros for 3.6 liters, probably to hide evidence of tampering or the car's malfunction, so I didn't give it to them!

I emailed them asking for an explanation of how this was possible, but the reply was also off-topic, as was the current comment under my post.

Since they claim that "What matters is the gauge reading at return—nothing more.", why didn't the employee ask me again for a penalty for a low tank of fuel, since the odometer still didn't show maximum and the range had dropped by 50 km? I have photos of all the readings, and let them take me to court. I won't change my mind that they're either manipulating or offering cars with faulty odometers, as they suggest in their comment, which allows for unjustified fines to be added.

P.S.
Now I'll write, "Your accusations are false and unacceptable."
The drive to the refill station could have consumed about 1 liter of fuel because I wasn't driving calmly by then, so theoretically, there could have been about 1.6 liters less fuel at the time of returning the car than a full tank, after subtracting the fuel in the filler pipe.
But what guarantee do I have that there wasn't 2 liters less fuel in the tank when I picked up the car, since, as they themselves say, the fuel meter may be faulty. Why didn't the AVIA employee add another fine if the meter still didn't show the maximum?

They're right about one thing: "You were able to add 3.6 liters." This required numerous presses of the fuel pump, which refused to fill the filler neck all the way to the top. That would be consistent with 20 km from the first fill-up to full, and a very leisurely, legally compliant ride.

Your accusations are false and unacceptable.

Fuel policy: All rentals are on a full-to-full basis. The vehicle must be returned with the same fuel level as at pick-up. If the gauge does not show full after refueling, this is due to the vehicle manufacturer’s fuel sensor system, not manipulation by Avia.

Fuel consumption: Fuel is consumed depending on how and how much the car is driven. That explains the differences you noticed in the range indicator.

Receipt: The fuel receipt is irrelevant for us. What matters is the gauge reading at return — nothing more.

You were able to add 3.6 liters, which clearly proves the tank was not completely full at the time of return. Our staff acted correctly and in full compliance with the rental agreement.

We completely reject any mention of “fraud” or “tampering.” Such accusations are baseless and damaging.

Avoid!!

They were nice and efficient for the car pickup then came the return and first they tried to charge for a damage that was clearly existing. Luckily I had video proof. Then when I showed the proof the employee literally crawled under the front bumper of the car to find a scratch and said I don’t think you have this in your video so it’s new and chargeable. What a joke. There are plenty of fair and honest companies, this unfortunately is not one of them. Avoid!!

Your review is misleading and does not reflect the facts.

The damage in question was not some “hidden scratch” but clearly visible multiple deep black scratches on the silver car’s front upper and lower bumper. These are obvious and immediately noticeable damages, not something that requires “crawling under the car” to invent.

Our staff acted correctly and in line with the signed rental agreement: any damage not documented at pick-up is the renter’s responsibility at return. Suggesting otherwise and accusing us of dishonesty is false and damaging.

Worst of all likely scammy. If you end up using this add extra 2-3 hours for returning car. Upon returning they claimed there was a tiny scratch on rim of tire that was new. It was such a small scratch on tire that it would be impossible for me to say for sure whether real or not but we then had to stay an extra 1.5 hours to sort out paperwork. (Yes, I had the full insurance -to their point -unbeknownst to me, it was through the third online party that booked the car but it was definite the FULL insurance -so to say it was basic is a lie). They also claimed gas tank wasn’t full, had me personally go and fill more only to find gas meter was faulty.
*Their Gas meter was faulty - also weird that i had to personally go and fill it -
It is another complete lie to say that they gave me an option to pay to have them fill it as i would've done that just because I was so frustrated with process. They kept insisting that I personally had to go, wouldn't accept any alternative, were inexplicably rude about it and then had me return the receipts for some reason.

Thankfully we didn’t have a plane to make (bc our flight was cancelled ) but at an airport rental you really expect quick easy service. Made for a very stressful and unpleasant end of trip. Again, I have traveled a lot and dealt with a lot of car rentals. This was not a typical experience.

Your accusations are unfounded and misleading. You did not have full insurance with Avia, but only the basic package, which does not cover damage to wheels or rims. The damage identified was on an aluminium rim, which cannot be repaired but must be fully replaced — a cost clearly defined in the rental contract and standard across the industry. Our staff are obliged to record and charge for such damage, regardless of its size, in line with your signed agreement.

Regarding the fuel, the contract is clear: the vehicle must be returned with a full tank. If it is not, the renter has two options — either personally refill the tank or pay for the missing fuel together with the refueling service fee. This is standard practice in the car rental industry and not subject to discussion.

The additional time at return was required to complete mandatory paperwork under Croatian law and EU regulations whenever damage or discrepancies are identified. This protects both the renter and the company.

All procedures in your case were applied correctly, transparently, and in accordance with the law. To describe this as a “scam” is false and defamatory. Avia will always defend its reputation and staff against baseless accusations.
