Terrible customer service

Where to start. A housemate sent me a considerable amount of money for rent, which seemed to disappear. I got him to call b.o.i. to see what happened. They claimed no knowledge and rushed him off the phone. I got him to call them back and this time they hung up on him. I called another bank asking if they could help and they told me that on Tuesday the 19th there was an issue with all the banks, but b.o.i. in particular, in regards to transfers of money and that they need to recall the money and resend. A bit frustrating but an easy enough fix, but they didn't even have the decency to inform him even with a lot of money in the air. Absolute disgrace.

Nightmare!!!

Nightmare!!!! Automated up to a point, then you get someone you simple cannot understand omg! Disgraceful while you remain locked out of your account . I had set up Face ID which was working fine then months on it looks for your ‘new pin’ I had been so used to the old one I forgot the new pin so now I’m locked out and had to hang up because I simply found it so difficult to understand the person on the phone, nothing personal but fault is with BOI. Terrible service

Atrocious atrocious atrocious

Atrocious atrocious atrocious. Took a week for a cheque to clear. Fair enough. Went to pay for flights when it showed as cleared on my account. Came as insufficient funds and block my card. Rang customer service and told it's only showing as cleared but won't be actually cleared for 5 business days. And I would have to keep checking it myself. Finally showed as actually cleared , went to pay for flights. Problem with card. Went via pp, insufficient funds. Rang boi again, to be told I have to wait for. It to be credited back to my account from pp. IT NEVER LEFT MY ACCOUNT YOU BUNCH OF MUPPETS. No wonder everyone is going to Revolut. In case you haven't guessed, my advice is avoid like the biblical plague. Unfortunately I'm locked into a mortgage for another 15 years 👺🤡

Customer service fell short

I recently had an unsatisfactory experience with Bank of Ireland Macroom. I found the level of customer service below what I would expect from a financial institution.

Staff were not particularly helpful and seemed unwilling to take ownership of my query. i was passed from one person to the other. i waited for a call back which I never received.

Overall, the experience felt disjointed and lacking in professionalism. I would hope to see improvements in communication and customer support going forward.

Why can I not select zero stars

Why can I not select zero stars? I cannot even download this app now to my phone. Only way I can check my account now is in branch. Get a grip BOI, this app is useless change it now or I will change banks, along with a lot of others. Disgraceful. It isn't even worth zero stars.

Awful customer service

Unfortunately my sister and I have had a terrible service from The Bank of Ireland. We have a joint account from which we have tried to transfer money to another joint account we have with a different organisation and I can only say BOI have been most unhelpful in our endeavours to do this. We have requested call backs that we don't receive, we have written to them at their request, to transfer a lump sum and this hasn't been done either. It seems they just don't want to assist us at all. We cannot phone the branch we are trying to contact as there is no direct line, we cannot go into the branch as we are in England and the branch we need is in Ballina, Mayo. It's been a very stressful experience and is still ongoing. Its not a difficult transaction so they are either incredibly inept or just don't want us to have our money.

Iv been with BOI for 18 years and just now realising just how the customers are disgustingly treated. Do not join bank of ireland if you love to save money or spend online, they are shutting customers accounts down for no reasons what so ever, and then black listing you for good meaning you can never join BOI again. Any funds left in the account are taking by the bank and moved you will not be able to access the funds until you are forced to shut down your own account.

Consistently dreadful experience - business banking

Consistently dreadful experience with business banking. The process ignores customers completely. We pay for business banking. 90 minutes to restore business banking access which we pay for because an admin changed their phone. The WORST company we have to deal with by far.

Mindblowingly poor service from BoI

It is no longer possible to call local Bank of Ireland branches. You have to call the 365 number and they request that your branch calls you... the good news is, you'll get a call back within 5 working days!

Awful experience with Aer lingus credit…

Awful experience with Aer lingus credit card. It's basically a scam, almost impossible to redeem flights, I keep getting automatic responses just saying it's not possible to fulfill the request. No person to talk, no clear reason, just emails that pop after 2-3 days of making the request. Card is expensive and useless

Extremely poor experience with Bank of…

Extremely poor experience with Bank of Ireland – completely disorganised and outdated processes.

I have a business loan originally taken under RTex Electronix Limited (now closed). For the past 3 years, I have been making all repayments personally from my self-employed account without any issue.

However, attempting to update a simple detail — my correspondence address — has turned into a ridiculous and time-consuming ordeal.

I have contacted Bank of Ireland through multiple channels:
• Phone support – repeatedly transferred between departments with no resolution
• Facebook support – advised to call a number that led to the same loop
• Lending teams – unable or unwilling to take ownership

Each department redirects me elsewhere. There is no accountability, no clear ownership, and no ability to resolve even the most basic request.

After all this, I was finally told that I must submit a physical letter on company headed paper — for a company that no longer trades. In 2026, requiring paper letters for a simple address update is unacceptable.

This experience highlights serious internal communication failures and outdated systems that waste customers’ time.

I have fulfilled all my obligations as a customer, yet the bank is unable to perform a basic administrative update efficiently.

Very disappointing and far below what should be expected from a major financial institution.

It’s been over 3 months trying to open a savings account with BOI and I have been taken from pillar to post with enquiries that does not seem to have an ending.

I then went to AIB and they immediately have proceeded to open a saving account for me and setup a meeting with a financial advisor to see how to manage my savings.

Coming from South Africa, know for its top service, I have had a horrific experience with this bank.

DREADFUL - DO NOT INVEST WITH BOI

I invested 15,000 through BOI in 2020. I received no statements for years, my adviser disappeared and I had no contact with the company.
I found out last year that my investment dropped in value year on year. It was invested through New Ireland Assurance.
This year, after taking my case to the Ombudsman, I got nowhere as I was unable to 'prove' that they hadn't sent statements. It was basically my word against theirs.
If only I'd read the reviews first, my experience is very common for BOI and New Ireland
After 6 years invested, I got my money back today over 235 less than what I gave them in 2020. Its shameful. Please please run as far as you can from any investment through BOI or New Ireland.
