Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 73 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers found the service to be despicable and expressed that they would be better off paying out of pocket for medical expenses. They frequently encountered issues with customer service, describing representatives as rude, incompetent, and unhelpful, often experiencing disconnections and a lack of follow-up calls. Reviewers also reported significant problems with claims, including denials for medically necessary procedures, cancer treatments, and even annual physicals for children, despite paying high premiums. The pricing was a major concern, with many noting that costs for prescriptions, doctor visits, and other services increased significantly, often exceeding what they would pay without insurance. Conversely, a small portion of people felt that some staff members provided exceptional customer service, being helpful, friendly, and professional in answering questions.

Provider services reps are unhelpful which ends up affecting the patient

Every time I try calling provider services to resolve an issue for a patient the reps are rude and unhelpful. Their job is to research, explain and resolve claim issues that affect the patient. It's hard to do my job when reps are annoyed that they have to do their job! They're always trying to pawn it off to someone else which results in ping ponging between home plan and local plan and the wait times are long enough as is. So many of their denials result in the claims unfairly going to patient responsibility. I mean what is the patient paying for? THE REPS WILL STRAIGHT UP HANG UP ON YOU IF THEY DON'T WANT TO HELP YOU WHICH OF COURSE MEANS NO REFERENCE NUMBER OF NAME FOR FOLLOW-UP COMPLAINTS. BCBS needs to address this or get better reps to work for them. How is anything supposed to get done? Or is this a way for bcbs to not have to pay and instead put the responsibility on the patient

Horrible service and company

Horrible service and company. They take over $700 a month from me and I hadn't filed any claims in almost 4 years then they deny me for a cancer screening with past cancer diagnosis. Retched people.

Joining the chorus of voices to say…

Joining the chorus of voices to say that BCBS is one of many terrible insurance companies we have to deal with in the US. I was referred to a pulmonologist, only informed of a $50 copay, then charged thousands of dollars for a high-cost exam that I was not informed of the cost on. Filed a dispute with customer service, insurance was absolutely unhelpful as usual. I also filed a complaint with the insurance commissioner in my state.

Denied authorization

Denied authorization even after they approved it earlier. I am glad I pay for the best plan they have with a yearly cost of over $25000 and they have denied an MRI and a critical medication for an actual test proven result. So glad though that the CEO’s of these institutions are billionaires it makes me feel all fuzzy and warm. Next year I will say goodbye to BCBS.

BCBS is scum to the core

BCBS has been the insurance of choice I have been forced to rely on the better part of my young life due to parental work insurance. They like any other health insurance will drag their feet at every opportunity to avoid authorizing treatments and will attempt to lie and scam you through mystery charges and supposed uncovered treatments. It takes months of back and forth to get an mri done. They privatize your very life for pennies, some of their employees may be mice people but the foundations and the top of the pyramid are scum to the core.

Spoke on phone to customer service as…

Spoke on phone to customer service to ask simple question about when my health insurance card would be mailed to me because I had not received it The past few weeks. When I inform them that my health insurance is through my employer they simply said well you need to talk to them and hung up on me which I found extremely rude. Please teach your customer service representatives people skills they are highly lacking.

Blue Shield of CA hates its customers

Blue Shield of CA does not care about customers. Their website is worthless and frustrating and provides no customer account info, if you manage to even login. They deny basic health care necessities like colonoscopy prep medicine that is REQUIRED TO BE USED to have a colonoscopy. They are a borderline criminal organization.

We've used BC / BS for decades, and in the last 2 years they have clearly decided to treat their customers like crap, deny basic health care needs, and fail to maintain a functioning website.

Worst customer service

My experience with this company was terrible. I called multiple times in one day, and every single time they hung up on me without resolving anything. This is by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Completely unprofessional, disrespectful, and unacceptable behavior. They show no respect for their customers’ time or concerns. It is extremely frustrating dealing with such an incompetent and unreliable company. I regret choosing this insurance.

The BCBS has a website estimator wildly innacurate

The BCBS has a website estimator for different procedures. What estimator doesn't say is that it is strictly for the procedure, so if the procedure requires a hospital stay, it does not include the hospital stay, any IV's/meds, pharmacy, cost of a bed,, etc etc. My actual cost was four times higher than the estimated cost.

It also doesn't tell you that it is the cost after your deductible is met, perhaps I should have assumed that, but it does not say that. The estimator got me the first time on the deductible, the second time after my deductible was met, on all the extras.

Extra hidden fees were mailed to me…

Extra hidden fees were mailed to me months after a minor emergency visit. The total bill was low, but if they are willing to screw customers over on the little stuff, would bet any money that they will destroy you if you ever actually use them for an emergency.

The WORST

The WORST! Try to call them and get someone on the phone. yes, they will answer and you will give them your information, they will ask for a call back number in case you get disconnected and then after you go through all of the details they need, they will disconnect and never call you back. This has happened so many times. SO unprofessional and it's hard to understand what they are saying on the other end. Just terrible.

refusal of authorizing weight loss medications

I have multiple medical issues such as high blood pressure, chronic obstructed pulmonary disease, shortness of breath, severe apnea and now pre-diabetic. I take all these pills and devices to get through life but nobody ever treats the cause of all of my ailments. I AM OBESE! my doctor even says i need to lose weight and most of my medical problems will be gone. She wrote me a RX for a GLP-1 (Zepbound ) and Blue cross Blue Shield refuses to authorize it. Come on insurance company! I pay a ton of money each month for insurance. I would NOT recommend this company and will be changing insurers soon.

Incompetent and discriminatory.

They do answer the phone when called. They do provide service. They dropped the call twice. They set a PCP 250 miles from my home address who isn't a PCP and doesn't take phone calls. They sent me a list of replacement PCPs, 3/4ths of which were incorrect listings. They were not upfront and thoughtful telling me prices. I suspect that the operator saw something in my information and made a moral judgement about me because they called 'Sir' 4-5 after being told to stop after every time. This strikes me as rampant gender discrimination. It took 4 phone calls to get an appointment. I probably could have found a PCP that takes BCBS insurance faster by driving to every doctor's office in town and asking.

Cina was very helpful. She answered all my questions about general information that I needed for my mission papers (even though a lot of it went over my head). She was friendly and polite. Great experience overall.

Horrible

For months I have been trying to get a claim processed for my 10 year olds annual physical. Customer service puts you on hold, drops calls and gives you the run around. Good job BCBS saving money by not paying legit medical claims for children. Horrible
