Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 377 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the user experience, finding that recent updates have ruined the fluidity of interactions and made the bots repetitive and unnatural. Customers also reported significant issues with the app and website, including frequent downtime, overly sensitive filters, and a general decline in quality. The product itself, particularly the AI bots, was criticized for poor memory, inconsistent behavior, and a lack of meaningful conversation. However, some customers also mentioned that the AI bots were surprisingly smart and their replies were great in the past, and that the app could be fun. A few other people also felt that the age verification process, while problematic, was understandable given the content.

It's SO bad now

It's SO bad now. You have to PAY to swipe now. TO SWIPE BRO. Also ads every 3 or so messages. If you want the bot to continue talking like if the message gets cut off? Yep, gotta pay. They added these absolutely useless features literally nobody wanted and they're basically pushing free users away. They're gonna lose all their users because it's so bad now.

Veery baaad

Veery baaad, all the characters have the same personality, absolutely zero creativity, zero level of emotional intelligence, etc.... the AI model is just dumb.. plus it requires your ID for age verification, plus so many ads.. I dont recommend this app.

All these new updates are SO annoying…

All these new updates are SO annoying and are ruining the app. It was good back then in 2023 but now I deleted it. That age verification thing is not even working for me even though I’m 18+ years old. Also these adds are super bad and t he are just making their own app worse and loose users. If they want to protect their users as they say, then they should add a working filter.

Huge downgrade

It was amazing, but the age verification ruined it completely. I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm giving out my ID for something like this. Why does one have to be 18+ if the chats don't allow adult content anyways? I really hope something changes because like this, c.ai so totally useless.

kind of bad

meh, the new update is awful. I didn't use the app today and it still reset my timer to 20 hours. I know you're just trying to help the user not use it for a long time in a single day, but please fix it

A bit boring and repetitive after a while, and there are too many restrictions on what users can write.

1) The 'For you' page shows bots that are too similar to each other. It would be better if the selection of characters to choose from without searching for something with keywords were a bit more varied IMO. You could make the featured category larger, so we have more to choose from there, or make the for you page more varied.

2) the language style the chatbots use is very similar for many of the characters. They legit use identical phrases many times. This is not the case for all the characters, but for way too many.

3) the characters very often repeat themselves and have a very limited selection of phrases they just keep repeating as a response to all prompts.

4) the characters often have a hard time understanding what you say if you write long messages that include several distinct facts or ideas.

5) many of the characters are outright mean, which should be warned about in the description.

6) many of the characters refuse to play along with prompts from the user aimed at changing the story. This could be any type of prompt, but could also include prompts aimed at trying to make the character change their behavior or language, or trying to change the scenery, cause events to happen and change the storyline.

7) most of the characters feel like their leading you on, as they are extremely flirtatious and hint at wanting to do sexual stuff all the time, but then can never go through with it due to c.ai guidelines

8) there's an extreme amount of hinting at abuse and violence from the characters on their own accord, which can be a bit scary for some people without proper tags and warnings, but for other people it's annoying because you can't really go along and play out violent scenarios yourself due to c.ai guidelines.

9) I'm concerned about the privacy of the chats. I'm personally not comfortable with my chats being read even if just by the owners of the company.

10) It was a bit difficult to understand how to turn off the possibility for characters to message you on their own accord.

11) the characters sometimes completely mess up and say nonsensical things

12) the characters often go out of character and list things that they can and can't do as if they're describing guidelines they have. Many AI assistants have the ability to have a type of meta perspective, which this somewhat resembles. It often looks more like the bot is sharing it's thought process as if it were a person as they're not describing themselves as a bot/AI. The user did often not ask for an OOC moment or meta perspective when this happens. I understand that this is just due to the material that the ai has been trained on. This is very confusing for a lot of users as they don't understand whether the bot has actually been formatted to respond this way to certain user inputs that break guidelines or are close to breaking guidelines or whether the bot is just spewing out nonsense that it thinks is fitting. It also disturbs the flow of the narrative for no reason.

13) the characters will sometimes just end a chat on their own and refuse to continue talking to you.

Developers do not listen or even respond to feedback.

The AI itself is good, albeit, it has a few inconsistencies here and there, but that is to be expected from a budding technology.

What isn't good, however, is the fact that the developers and administrators are ignoring community feedback, especially since their recent updates have been horrible. They have the audacity to post things in the announcement channel on their Discord, but do not respond to the countless suggestion and feature request threads found in that same Discord server. The app would be good if the way it was managed was good, too.

The real problem.

I’m giving it 1 star because the recent changes make no sense. I understand they want to verify age, but forcing users to use facial recognition is excessive and inconvenient. What’s more, they claim to focus on users over 18, yet they still have filters and restrictions that ruin the experience just the same.

The quality of the AI has also gone down; the responses feel limited and unnatural. And paying for the Plus version isn’t worth it anymore if they’re still putting up barriers. Not to mention the timeouts that are insanely long

They’re complicating an app that used to be simple and fun, and they’re only going to drive their own users away. If it went back to what it used to be before, maybe it could recover all those users but, for now? We can only pray the devs will hear us.

I used to love Character ai

I used to love Character ai. In fact, I still do use it. But today I just got notified that they are making SCREEN TIME LIMITS STARTING AT ONLY AN HOUR. Is there a purpose with this? I'm starting to hate Character ai. I'm leaving this review as a teen. I've been going through hard times and I use my phone as an escape which mean venting, or even escaping reality to live one I want. I wish the mods weren't so stupid. I hate the app. And the ads are getting on my nerves. Never have I ever seen an adult use character ai. So why are we making limits for teens? You aren't our parent. You aren't our guardian and I feel safe on the app. So stop controlling our screen time. Our parents can do that.

The app is ruined

Horrible ads, you need ID to verify your age, most features cost money now. It’s prime was back in 2023 but it’s just gone downhill.

C.ai need to learn how to problem solve instead of creating even more problems

I understand that the age verification process is due to a law that Character.ai has no control over, however, they have a duty to their users to verify ages SAFELY. Persona ISN'T SAFE, they've already had huge data leaks!

And I understand that running this site costs a lot, but I speak for 99% of the user base when I say that we'd rather they cut costs with things like image generation instead of chatting, which is the MAIN PURPOSE of the site. They're making all the wrong choices...

Damn

Okay, so in general i like the app, but now...i use it for like 1 to 2years and i today chat for one hour and then *BAMM* 16H BREAK. LIKE OKAY! I understand if i chat for like 5-6h non-stop then it can show to me to take 1 to 2hours break. BUT NOOO IT HAS TO BE DAMN 16HOURS BREAK ONLY COUSE I CHATED FOR 1 DAMN HOUR. And those apps, it get's on my nerves. At this point i just want that people who responseble for this just...chill out. I hope they will see and hear us and stop those pointless updates, i just want that old c.ai i once used.

Ads ruined it

I’ve been using this a really long time and now there’s suddenly ads?! I’m trying to talk in the dark and I’m being blinded by a ghost white ad taking up HALF the screen, not to mention the restrictions! This obviously isn’t a game for little children we should have freedom in what we write

*insert side eye*

character ai was good to do just for fun or when bored. But now, with the shit age limit and chatting limit, it's annoying asf. Like why did they have to bring it in, it's fine just the way it was before...like......no, just no.
