Very chaotic company with poor communication.

Tried multiple times to book a sailing day through this company. Classic Sailing is a booking agency mostly for yachts and ships they do not own and have little control over. Their organisation is very chaotic, difficult to get hold of and obtain responses and confirmations from and have difficulty getting information correct on bookings. Adam Palser seems to be the owner but seems useless at any form of admin. The office ladies particularly Jess and Jessie were much better. As the ships are not owned by the company their schedules change frequently and seemingly without warning so be warned that when you think you have a booking, it could change at any time. After a period of about four months trying to arrange a trip we had to give up and ask for our money back.

Great boat

Great boat, excellent skipper and first mate, arrangements before the trip were spot on, all information required given without prompt. above all an excellent trip thanks to skipper and mate, (catering / hospitality also excellent).

Did my RYA day skipper

Did my RYA day skipper, probably more basic living conditions onboard than a modern yacht more than made up for by the excellent and knowledgable crew . learning to sail on a lovely classic boat was great , everybody was very welcoming , friendly and professional , the food was great and they were able to get everybody working together as a team quickly. I didn’t want to go home and would highly recommend on top of which doing qualifications with trinity helps fund their charity work and keep these stunning boats working 👍

After just a few days on board I was…

After just a few days on board I was confident that the captain was very knowledgable and experienced and kept the ship and crew safe in any weather. The crew was very pleasant and friendly most of the time although not as experienced as I thought that they should be. The voyage crew often seemed to get mixed instructions on where to go and how to do things.
Meals were very good and became the highlight of the day with weeks of no change of no land or sea creature in site.
Lack of sleep and seasickness made the experience not very pleasant at times.
Among a group of 52 people on a small space there are always some that seem misfits but even those had their good days.

Excellent Week

Excellent Week - James & Gabriel were excellent. Chloe's cooking was outstanding with every meal a delight. Gill had been on an Angnus gourmet weekend but Chloe surpassed that. Great set of crew/guest lots of laughter and just a generally good time. Everybody pulling their weight, Only minus was the weather with every day being a South Westerly and the need to shelter from hurricane remnants meant that a trip to the Scillies was not on. Still thoroughly enjoyed sailing the Cornwall coast.

Hi Keith, Thank you so much for your wonderful comments about your time on Eda Frandsen. While you may have not got the Scillies at the weather was against you it sounds like you made the most of it and explored the best of Cornwall instead. all the best Melissa. Adventure travel consultant.

Day Sail

Just had an excellent day sail on the Oosterschelde out of Falmouth. After a life long fascination with tall ships I finally managed to be aboard one under sail. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and am very impressed by the friendliness of the crew, their knowledge and abilities, and their enthusiasm.

Traditional sailing at its best!

Had a fantastic 3 days over the bank holiday sailing the 120 year old traditional Brixham trawler ‘Leader.’ Sunshine, dolphins, sunsets, gales and fresh winds on the last day that provided superb sailing. Add in fabulous food and a great crew and it was a truly memorable and thoroughly enjoyable experience. I will definitely be back!

A very disappointing trip on Lord…

A very disappointing trip on Lord Nelson 8/03/2018 - 18/03/2018
Unacceptable, as "Island Hopping Across the Azores" was rerouted to Gran Canaria: there was no island hopping, just a stormy route across the Altlantic. Not a single whale seen!

Also I was partnered with a severely disabled lady, deaf/blind wheelchair user, who broke her arm (day 2), and I recieived no assistance or information about her care. Despite my concern no help or support was given to me as buddy:. Both the advertised description was not fulfilled, and the care of a severely disabled/ injured stranger a nightmare: a terrible holiday.

It is totally understandable that Sarah had a very disappointing voyage but it is also true that there is a lot more to this story than Sarah mentions.

The problem started because the tall ship Lord Nelson was unable to sail safely to the Azores were Sarah’s voyage was due to start. The ship had sailed from the Cape Verde heading north towards the Azores. But due to hurricane force winds in the Eastern Atlantic, an extremely rare event, all shipping in the area was advised to avoid the hurricane force winds and Lord Nelson very sensibly complied and went to the Canary Islands as a safe alternative.

Re-routing for Safety

It does make it clear in our voyage descriptions, terms and conditions that the joining and departure ports may have to change due weather conditions for the safety of all concerned. However all our vessels have planned routes that are designed to be achievable in all but extreme circumstances. For instance we schedule no voyages in the Caribbean during the hurricane season and this is the only instance we have had of a changed Atlantic route in 22 years of trading.

Therefore the reason Sarah’s voyage had to be re-routed was for safety.

Wildlife

On this voyage there were whale and marine life experts and their record of the voyage shows 24 marine wildlife sightings including three different species of whales. Sometimes due to the watch keeping rota not everyone gets to see all the sightings that may only last for minutes. You can be on the wrong side of the ship and miss sightings.

I can only assume that Sarah was not in the right place at the right time and I’m afraid there is nothing anyone can do about this.

The Buddy System

Lord Nelson is a tall ship designed to allow people of all abilities to sail including wheel chair users. To make this possible able bodied people are asked to assist the physically disabled. This is called the buddy system and again unfortunately Sarah’s buddy did have an accident early on in the voyage braking her arm. The ships report on the incident shows that assistance and advice was given to Sarah in helping her buddy.

Classic Sailing very much regrets the circumstances of this this voyage for Sarah but everything that can be done has been done.

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip on Oosterschelder, a top-sail schooner. It was fun working with the professional crew when opportunities allowed and gratifying that we were under no obligation to contribute if the conditions were difficult. One also benefited from the expertise and experience of the crew. They were always happy to answer questions. The food and social side of the trip was also excellent.
