A year of stress, danger and over £10,600 lost – avoid Dales Cornwall

UPDATE:
Thanks for replying. To clarify for anyone reading:
• I reported repeated faults (including a critical safety failure requiring police recovery)
• Dales did not “investigate” beyond asking me to pay for an engineer’s report first.
• I offered a reasonable settlement (clear £6,000 liability + £332 wasted finance). This was refused.
• The vehicle had already had a failed repair within the first 6 months (Consumer Rights Act “one repair” rule). The same DPF fault has recurred.
• I have escalated to the finance company under Section 75, notified Trading Standards, and will go to the Financial Ombudsman Service if needed.
Happy to share the email chain and Land Rover invoices with any party who wishes to see them.

Original review;
I bought a Range Rover Evoque from Dales Cornwall in August 2024 for £13,500. Within weeks it developed serious faults and over the following year I had three major breakdowns — including one terrifying incident where the car lost all steering and electrics and had to be recovered by police.

The car spent weeks off the road, including being sent to Land Rover because Dales couldn’t fix it themselves. The same DPF fault has now recurred, leaving the car in limp mode. Despite this, I have been left with over £10,600 in losses after finance payments, negative equity, recovery charges, insurance costs and wasted servicing — for a car I only had 336 days’ use of.

The way Dales have so far handled this was worse than the car itself:
• They’ve denied being aware of most recent fault, despite me calling on the day and being told to come in.
• Most shockingly, when I went in they even suggested I take out a personal loan to cover £7,000 negative equity so they could sell me another car. The senior manager was present at the dealership and said nothing.

I have now escalated the matter to the finance company, Trading Standards, and the Financial Ombudsman Service.

If you value your safety, your money, or your time: do not buy from Dales Cornwall.

Appalling service

Appalling service. Approved Dacia warranty useless. No recompense from either dealer or Dacia both blamed each other. Unless you have very deep pockets, avoid like the plague. Clutch burned out apparently £2075 to repair. Complained about clutch smell shortly after purchase, told it was hottest day of the year. 12 months on told need new clutch.

Response from Dales:
Hi Steve

I have discussed the issue with your clutch feeling heavy with my team and after reviewing everything, including your warranty policy (copy attached for reference) I believe the service team have handled this appropriately. Clutches are usually considered wear and tear items which means they are not covered under most warranty policies – refer to page 12 of the booklet.

To inspect the clutch for defects we would need remove the gearbox, which is a fairly big job, the policy holder would need to approve this as explained on page 16 of the document. If there is no obvious defect and the clutch is found to be worn, the cost of dismantling and rebuilding plus the replacement parts is down to the policy holder. The estimate you were given was to replace the clutch including the associated parts, labour and Vat.

I am sorry that you are unhappy with the way this has been explained, that’s never our intention. We’ve tried to be up-front and clear.

I hope this email has helped clarify how the warranty works.

Kind regards

Cupra scorrier

Firstly Dan the Mobility specialist has been very accommodating and helpful, sadly he was the only trained Mobility specialist at the branch making it very difficult to get help at times. Sadly the car isnt very fuel efficient unless your on the dual carriageway or motorway, town driving we are achieving 20-30mpg, the 1.5 petrol dsg formentor is very noisy which is very distracting if you struggle with sensory difficulties, it takes ages to change gears which is probably why it can be very loud. Also the stop start cannot be permanently turned off and will need to be turned off everytime you get in the car via the settings which can be hard to remember as there is nothing to show you that stop start is off or on, with the auto hold feature this makes the car extremely slow to pull away at roundabouts and junctions which is a safety concern. Finally the sat nav is useless as it rarely finds anywhere in Cornwall even with the postcode and if it finds where you want to go itll take you via the longest route possible. Other than these issues the formentor is a lovely car and Dan at cupra definitely has been very helpful prior to getting the car. Sadly we couldnt cancel the car after ordering due to the cost it would incur for cupra which is understandable. Thanks

Shocking service…

Took my car for its second service hoping for a better result than the first one they did last year, it broke down just after leaving the car park had to call theRAC as service dept said they couldn’t help me not to mention they didn’t wash and hoover the car, it turned out the RAC said they had caused the issue but sorted me out, I was contacted by dales who said this was a hiccup and assured me it wouldn’t happen again… so imagine my disappointment when I dropped off my car and was told they didn’t have time to fix the sat nav issue I booked it for with the service and would have to re book it for that, so I left the vehicle and when I returned service dept was closed half day on Saturdays apparently so my key was left on the desk with the paperwork I walk out to my car to find it hasn’t been washed or hoovered again despite there in-depth promise this wouldn’t happen again last year, and when I get in and start the vehicle I had warning lights and a spanner on the screen… they hadn’t even switched my service light out, so I had to google it and do it myself, don’t think this is anyway near good service I’m afraid. Sad and disheartening to say the least 😞.

Poor Customer Service

We purchased a 2022 Dacia Sandero in Dec 2024. This mainly my wife's Car. The car developed a rattle. My wife took the car back in April and was informed nothing wrong. The rattle still there. In June 2025 I took the car back as rattle getting worse. I was informed this is possibly software update required. It turns out I understand this a common fault and we'll known. I feel after paying £14.000 for the car and being told it has full warranty this should be covered.i was charged £100 for what is basically plugging the car into a laptop. The customer service is not great once they have sold you the car.

Good Morning Mr Biernis, thank you for making contact with regards to this issue. Lee Harvey the service manager has tried to contact you this morning to discuss this with you, but unfortunately has been able to get through. Following your discussions with the service team during your visit yesterday, it was outlined unfortunately software updates are not a covered under used car warranty policies. As you accepted the quote provided by the service team at the time we were unaware of your dissatisfaction with this. We want all of our customers to leave feeling fully supported where its within our capability. Lee (service manager) will call you again this afternoon to what we can do to support further in this matter.

Would definitely buy from Dales again

I have had my Seat Leon for nearly a year now and I love it. Dales was recommended to me by my brother who had bought a new car a year or so before.
The sales team at Scorrier were really helpful, it was a really exciting buying journey thanks to Adam & Dan.
The service team at Summercourt have been great too- I will continue go to Dales for my services & MOTs.

I have now bought seven brand new cars from Dales Motors, and I can't recommend them highly enough. From start to finish, the entire experience was exceptional. What truly stood out was the level of personal service I received, particularly from Luke and Symon.

Both Luke and Symon were incredibly polite and helpful. They took the time to listen to my needs, answer all my questions thoroughly, and never made me feel rushed or pressured. Their knowledge of vehicles was impressive, and they were able to guide me through the process with patience and clarity.

Luke, in particular, was fantastic at explaining the technical details in a way that was easy to understand, and Symon was brilliant at ensuring all the paperwork and logistics were handled smoothly. They both went above and beyond to ensure I was completely satisfied with my purchase.

It's rare to find a dealership where the staff are so genuinely helpful and approachable. Dales Motors, with Luke and Symon leading the way, has definitely earned my trust and future business. If you're looking for a reliable and trustworthy car dealership, look no further!

Had issues with my new car after a recall, it had been into the garage twice and unable to fix as it needs a software update from Renault. This has been going on for over 6 months without a solution and was told that contacting the finance company to reject the car was the way to go. The customer service is appalling as no one will take responsibility and sort this out. No offer of a replacement car or getting my money back , nothing. I have the motor ombudsman on the case and the finance company to try and get a resolution.

Absolute rip off

Absolute rip off, brought a car in September was given 6 months warranty on the car. Took it in to have handbrake looked at due to it not holding. Was told they would look at this on warranty, and any work that needed to be done they would speak to me first and then if I was happy with price they'd book it in and complete for me, was also told it would only be a half an hour wait. Was left waiting for an hour with no communication, after an hour I went up to the service desk to find out how long left I had to wait and was told she was just pricing it up for me. When I then questioned this and said that it should be being done on warranty she told me handbrakes are on warranty but they had adjusted my rear brakes as they needed to be done. She offered for me to book my car in to have brakes done but it was a ridiculous price. Then she said it would be nearly £70 for todays adjustment. £70 for them to adjust my brakes and tell me I needed new brakes, and also £70 for them to still be the exact same as when I drove in there!
Firstly, I didn't give them permission to do any work on the car that would cost me, especially after being told it was on warranty!

Failure of service at every point

I bought a new Captur in March 2023. In December 2024 when the car was less than 2 years old and I hadn't yet done 10,000 miles, it failed with an electic motor fault. And so began a most unsatisfactory saga.
1. An almost new car breaking down. I was told that it was almost inevitable as "there are thousands of moving parts, any of which could fail at any time". Things happen, get over it. Great!
2. RAC cover was provided as part of the warranty. They took 3.5 hours to arrive and said they needed to take the car to the garage. The patrol man offered to drop me off at a location 10 miles from home. I phoned Dales to see if they could provide a courtesy car but they couldn't. What they could have done was tell me that the RAC cover included "onward travel" and therefore the RAC should've got me home, thereby avoiding a lot of stress. I mentioned this to the Dales Service desk person dealing with the incident. I expected him to thank me for the feedback and say that he would remember that for future. But what did he say "Oh well, we don't see the RAC cover details and I didn't know". Interpret as "not my problem mate".
3. Dales arranged a hire car from Enterprise. They could have done this as soon as they were informed that my car was being brought in to the workshop, but they didn't do anything till I phoned the next day to see what was happening.
4. Enterprise at first suggested they'd come and fetch me and hand over the car at their depot some 25 miles from my home. After a few phone calls they agreed to deliver the car. I mentioned to Dales that they need to tighten up their arrangement with Enterprise so that there is no question that the car will be delivered. Answer: Well that's what they're supposed to do. So Dales obviously weren't even going to mention it to Enterprise, let alone revisit their contract.
5. The spare part required for my car took 3 weeks to arrive. Quite by co-incidence it arrived 15 minutes before I phoned to chase things up. Ahem. I assumed they'd start work on the car that day.
6. When I rang the following day to see if it was ready, I was told that it would be going into the work shop in 15 minutes. Apparently, Dales is unable to get a delivery date from their parts supplier, not even one day ahead, so they can't book the car into the workshop until the part actually arrives.

So, in summary, there was a failure of service at every point in this sorry tale. It's no wonder, given the attitude of the service desk which I assume goes throughout the business: That's how it is, nothing needs to change, nothing to learn from this. We accept poor service from our suppliers and you should accept the same from us. I was handed my key and sent on my way without so much as an apology. He probably thought he had nothing to apologise for, having delivered Dales normal level of service.
