This company is a fraud. DO NOT USE THEM.

This company is a fraud. Be aware that if the comprehensive insurance is not taken, they will claim that damaged has happened to the car and charge an extortionate amount into your credit card. I claimed back to my UK bank and in the end did not get a refund.

-To start with, they are not in the airport; they will get you with a van to their premises.

-The car given was not what I paid for. I was given a much cheaper/ lower range car; obviously its on their benefit that they are based in the middle of nowhere; as if you decide not to take the car and ask for a refund of the prebooked fee you may be abandoned in their premises away from other rental car companies

- They did not chek the car condition before the rental. Upon car return, they did a thorough check and "found" a 1mm mark in the paint, that they claim I made.
The car was used to go from the airport to a private garage, I am 100% certain the damage was already there.
They charged €200 for this,
I claimed to my bank in the uk but did not get the refund in the end.

Lets try to sink this company.
Please make sure that you ask for "HOJA DE RECLAMACIONES". This a complaint form that they should provide to you (It is mandatory as per Spanish regulations)
Once you have filled it in, make sure you get a copy of it. With this complaint form and evidence (pictures, contracts, etc) go to either a Spanish post office (oficina de correos) or to the local "oficina municipales de información al consumidor (OMIC)" to send the complaint form and evidence.

Please also make sure that you also complain about this company to the car comparison website or similar that you used to make the online booking. If there are enough complaint they will eventually remove them from their websites!

Do not use Dickmanns in Alicante

I hired a car from Dickmanns in Alicante in July 2017. I had 950 euros debited from my credit card as a deposit. The car was returned to them on 29th July and was signed off as being undamaged. There then followed several phone calls and emails to Spain in an attempt to get the deposit reimbursed. They just told me I could claim from my credit card company. I contacted the credit card company who eventually, after 7 months, managed to claim back the money. My advice is to never use Dickmanns.

Do not use this company

We have hired from Dickmanns in the passed with no problems but back in September 2017, we hired from Alicante not enough places on bus to hire place, then very slow to obtain vehicle, we didn’t take their insurance as we have a yearly insurance, in the past this was never a problem as the waiver deposit should not be included in your invoice total but this time it was (ever thou it says on website that it shouldn’t) on returning vehicle same chaos as pick up, we got our paperwork signed off, then when visa bill came the fuel amount had been returned but not the deposit so rang company and was told it could take up to 25 days, after then we tried ringing on a number of times but the phone was answered and put down immediately or if I did got a person I was just told it was in accounts, when finding accounts number on website and trying this number a few times and no one answering we got in touch with visa company, thank goodness I’d keep all the paperwork, we received money back 3 months after returning the vehicle but had 3 months of interest to pay with visa is now trying to obtain at least two months back from the company, let’s see if this happens, so if you think this is a cheap car hire just think of the interest payments you will get on £950.00 deposit, you have been warned

DON'T USE THEM!!

DON'T USE THEM!!! That may be cheaper than others and give great options. I hired from them in Valencia in Oct 2016. They refused to give me the car unless I agreed to PAY a deposit of 950€ which they insisted would be returned to me upon return of car. I have trying to retrieve this deposit ever since then!! I would NEVER use them again. They are thieves. I have lost this money as they refused to refund or reply back to my emails. Pay a bit more and use someone else.

very satisfied and recommend the company …

I rented a car from 25.11 to 02.12.2017. The staff were very friendly and in only 5 minutes the car was available.
The rental Price was cheap and it makes sense to take out insurance and i will have no problems if i had an accident or any other problems.
I`ll fly back to Alicante next week and rent a car again from Dickmann rent a car.

DO NOT HIRE FORM THIS COMPANY

Hired a car from Dickmans Madrid in July 2017. I spent about an hour picking up the car as they prepared paper work, something that could have been done in advance. This was the least of my problems. On returning the car they found a tiny, and I mean tiny, mark on the rear bumper. I said this hadn't occurred whilst I had the car and showed them a video I had taken on the the day we hired the car on which the mark was visible. They said the video was 'no good' even though their representative was clearly visible in it. They also tried to say I had exceeded the allocated millage but I also had a photo of the odometer which they seemed to accept. I heard nothing since but now realise they have taken 50 Euro from my credit card, almost 3 months later. I will try to reclaim this. In the meantime, my advice is to avoid this company at all costs. They are out to swindle you and get as much money as they can. Do not be fooled by the apparently low prices.

If you have an annual car (damage) insurance policy

I picked up a car on 28/6 on a full to full basis and was told the fuel cost would be refunded when I returned the car full but the deposit (€950) would be refunded after 20 working days. The cost of the hire was extremely competitive but we were given a virtually new VW Polo and returned the vehicle (full) on 15/7, the check in was hassle free and the fuel cost was refunded on that same day which was a surprise as it was a Saturday; up to this point, a 4*+ experience. The €950 deposit however was not so forthcoming- I started emailing after WD 23 and called them after WD 25 to be told that a delay was caused by the Bank Holiday (in August), I was then told their refund policy was 30 working days (although their T&C's say 25 days), for any communication after this I was told the refund was 'with accounts' so eventually I asked our (Spanish) solicitor to get involved although they didn't seem to have much more success - the refund cleared into my account on 22/9 which was 50 WD after I returned the car (less the BH obviously). If I had known they wanted to keep the deposit for so long I could have made a conscious decision before booking (low cost v held deposit) or taken their insurance - I just wish they'd be a bit more open about how they operate before I booked.

I notice from the latest reviews that …

I notice from the latest reviews that Dickmanns are still up to their old tricks. Charging customers for the tiniest chip or scratch when RECORD, for example, allow a 2cm long paint scratch with no charge. I was caught by Dickmann earlier this year with a 600 euro charge for a pin head size paint chip. Dickmann will also withhold repayment of deposits until it it is asked to be returned. I guess that they hope some people will forget about the deposit. They also seem to have quite a lot of clunkers for rent. I have been using Dickmann for several years with not a lot of trouble except for them not returning my deposit as they promised. They have changed over the last two years and so I am now an ex-customer and I suggest that all renters who really want to use Dickmann should buy their full insurance otherwise go somewhere else. A point on paying for extra drivers is that in Spain it is the car that is insured and not the driver, therefore a charge for an extra driver is money straight into their pocket.

Alicante Airport nightmare!

Our experience using Dickmans was as follows:

1. on arrival at airport very difficult to locate - you have to take a bus to the car rental depot. Nobody knows where the bus departs from.

2. on arrival at the depot you are required to put down an astronomical deposit of €950 on a credit card. We do not use credit cards (debit cards only) so were forced to buy fully comprehensive insurance at €85 for two days = €15,512 annual premium.

3. on receipt of the car although externally clean, internally it stank of cigarettes - it also appeared to be an old vehicle missing all 4 hubcaps!

4. No indication of the address of the location to return the car on any of the paperwork. Had to go to the airport and follow the shuttle bus back to the depot to find it.

5. Still haven't received the fuel deposit of €113 back.

Our advice - stay clear of them.

I hired a car from here in April 2017

I hired a car from here in April 2017. I paid the extra for the insurance. I had no problems whatsoever . No re fuelling costs or extra service costs as I brought the car back with a full tank of petrol. Staff were great with me and my family. Car seat was complimentary for my toddler as I took the extra insurance out and so was an extra named driver. The car was a spotless nearly new Nissan Qashquii.
I booked through Doyouspain and have booked again for my next trip. I have tried another hire company that was based at the airport and had very long queues but I found Dickmanns to be much easier and less costs overall.

I have to join the disgrunted customers …

I have to join the disgrunted customers here. Now two months on I havent recieved my deposit of 950 euros from a car returned in July. Most times the phone is not answered or hung up and email is not replied. No point in trying to get the money back yourself. Contact the creditcard and make a claim soon after 25 days of return (as per conditions). Or better yet, dont use dickmanns.

Do not use Dickmans - very bad experience.

My parents hired through Dickmans in Alicante for a trip in July. They had to return early as my step-mother was taken ill.

My step-mother paid the deposit on her credit card. Sadly, a few weeks after returning to the UK my step-mother passed away.

I contacted Dickman's to claim the deposit repayment as part of sorting out my step-mother's estate. Despite several emails, and being assured that the amount would be repaid, after two months the amount is still outstanding. We are now pursing this matter through the courts to reclaim the money.

We were fine with the whole "We take a payment of €950 for 1 to 1.5 months" but 2 to 2.5 months is unacceptable. We sent many emails and spoke on the phone but kept getting fobbed off with "its with our finance department" We got our deposit back by making a claim via our credit card company. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

**AVOID AVOID** I hired from Dickmans and a quick last minute weekend away in Spain in July. The car was picked up from Murcia airport. There was no problems finding or hiring the car. I paid the FULL TO FULL insurance (82 euros) for a full tank of fuel. I asked at the checkout what I get refunded and what the money was for. I specifically told would be refunded when returned with a full tank. As it was just weekend I only needed to put in 10 euros to fill it back up. The car was good. No problems there. Returned ok. Person checked over. Thought nothing more. It's 6 September and I'm still awaiting my refund which they refuse as I signed the agreement to say that it was some other insurance. The customer service (if you can call them that are despicable) all emails are rude in any response and have started to respond to me in capital letters saying I cannot read! It's just a con. The company fees are set up to mislead and take your money. I fell for the cheap hire but it's ended up more money than a reputable, household name. It's not worth the hassle. I'm just glad it's not more money from all the reviews on here.

Please please don't rent from Dickman's, I'm struggling to get my Credit Card company to force a refund as I don't stand a chance of seeing the money back from them - and I have all the paperwork to say I returned the car in good condition!

All these reviews are true for once. I am a believer in some people are never happy and i don't think its so hard to be pleased with a simple car hire agreement.
It now the 1st of September. I returned my car on the 13th July with No issue's and I am still awaiting my £950 euros! just like 100s of others judging by this thread!!

Dickman's No trouble what so ever

I booked car hire for my partner, her friend and 3 children with Do you Spain and Dickmans car hire in Alicante.
I assumed reading all the negative reports on all the car hire companies that we may as well go with one that offered free 2nd driver and Full-to-Full petrol clause as everybody seemed to have issues even though we have not had trouble in 10 plus years of hiring in Spain.
I have to say despite all the moaners on here, Dickman's have been faultless from start to finish. Pick up from Airport was on time and only a few minutes to the hire office, Car was almost new, no hard sale over insurance as we had our own arranged from UK (much cheaper). Videoed any damage to be on the safe side.
When the car was brought back they had difficulty finding the returns area for Dickman but a quick phone call sorted it (they could give better directions on the paperwork). Car was checked over and agreed no new damage. Car was also filled up before return as agreed.
Since arriving home and assuming the worst for the damage deposit and fuel deposit we have been pleasantly surprised that they have not charged our card for the €900 deposit - why would they as all companies take a swipe of your card in case it is needed but won't actually use it if no issues, and the petrol deposit was credited back within a couple of days. Moral of the story - do your research on who you choose, take video of car condition just in case, always fill up next to the hire return as the hire company fuel cost can be 3 times garage cost.
Overall fab experience and some of the cheapest car hire we have had in Spain.

Same as many other travellers' …

Same as many other travellers' experiences it would appear - we are still awaiting the return of a 950 euro deposit debited for a car rental in July 2017 and for which there were no problems with the hire/returned vehicle. Despite sending emails to Dickmanns directly without any response and the involvement of Do You Spain to date we have not received our deposit back. We will be looking to contact the Ayuntamiento to complete a hoja de reclamacion (complaint form) and contacting the credit card company to see what action we can take further. Beware of the way that this business conducts itself - we have used many other Spanish car hire firms but never experienced this type of problem or examples of bad practice before. Over 25 days kept my €950 deposit for no reason .Will be able to get refund off Mastercard.Best conclusion is that all major credit card companies will refuse to process payments to this company and Spanish police get involved.

I have just come back from Alicante …

I have just come back from Alicante where I rented a vehicle from Dickmanns. I read lots of reviews and was a little concerned about the grief everybody seemed to be having. After six days hassle free hire I have come to the conclusion that everybody wants to hire a +5000.00 vehicle for about 6 Euros a week including excess waiver and then expects platinum level service standards. Lots of whinging and whining about how good other companies are so the question is, why don't you use them? Because we all want something on the cheap!! Guidance tips for naive penny pinching renters like my good self: 1. Take out Dickmanns Insurance.(Approx 15 Euros per day) You can then return the car back in several pieces in a wheelie bin and they won't charge you any more. 2. Take Full for full fuel and if you have taken out their insurance they do not charge a penny. Just return the car Full and get a receipt for the fuel station stating the fact. 3.If you arrive late at night then expect to pay 40.00 Euros to any car hire company. Ask yourself, would you sit up half the night missing out on your cocoa just to be hounded by some hacked off tourist expecting the world for a farthing? without wanting some form of recompense?? I think not. 4. Lose the attitude!! You will get miles further with these good people with a friendly smile and a hello rather than " Where's my car gringo?" My Experience: 1 car hire for 6 days. 135.00 euros inclusive. No credit card deposit, no fuel charge, brought car back full. I said goodbye and thank you, they did the same. You couldn't even hire a car with another company for that price. let alone include insurance. Oh and it included one extra driver just for good measure. Why oh why do people get fooled into taking out insurance in UK just to then be told you still have to leave a whopping credit card security deposit. Bonkers! totally bonkers. Do your research good people and I promise you live to book with Dickmanns another day End of story.
