Never under any circumstances rent a car from these thieves. This company has the worst customer service in the world not to mention the highest cost insurance anywhere. If you don’t use their insurance then they put a 2500 dollar hold on your credit card so you get highjacked into using their insurance for 100 dollars a day. We had our car washed before it was returned and they wouldn’t even give us a ride to the airport in Cabo we had to walk with luggage almost a mile. Beware fox is a part of these thieves. Absolutely a terrible company
I’ve used this company in Trinidad and had no problem. In Mexico it’s a different story. Though my car insurance covers me anywhere I go, they insisted it would not be valid coverage for their rental. They showed me plans with deposits that were as high as $26000 usd and outrageous insurance fee. The gimmick is to take you by surprise. You know none of this until you get into the office to get your car. The agent was really slick and said he would do me a favor and ask the boss to reduce a $3000 deposit to $600. Nevertheless I still paid $464 for 6 days of insurance. I was so sickened and in shock. When I said I would cancel they said I would lose the payment I made for the rental online. I thought I would not be paying until I got there. This is a scam. Do not use these people in Mexico they have no scruples at all. They did not give me the car I ordered. Instead a cheap that did not have the room I needed for my family’s luggage. What a trip. Never again!!!
Hello, I have just returned the car and your employee went alone to the parking lot to check the car, after about thirty minutes he returned with a photo of the car with the bumper detached, trying to attribute any accident to me. I'm sure I parked the car 10 minutes earlier in perfect condition, and seeing that there were only trees on the front, I exclude that someone may have hit the parked car while parking, so I deduce that your employee simulated the break by attempting to a scam against me. Once he learned that I had taken out accidental damage insurance, he was almost disappointed and told me everything was ok. I invite you to check your employees and I reserve legal action against your company if even a single euro of damages is charged to me. I should add that I have not received any receipt for returning the car. Best regards. Nicholas Mancini.
They took a massive amount of deposit. Almost $1.5k of deposit for cheap and economic car. I wouldn't complain but they aren't notifying you at all before transaction. Took me by surprise.
I used two other rental companies (Budget and Hertz) in Mexico and none of them took such a big deposit.
I've rented a car just for few days before my flight back to UK. The car was parked on the street next to my accommodation.
One night before my flight someone broke into my car and stole the spare wheel. There was no sign of any breaking in.
The next day I've notified the Europcar about the incident. They told me that the whole thing was done by 'professionals'. I was charged, for spare wheel, $233... A little bit high for one spare wheel.
The behaviours of co-workers and whole situation looked a little bit suspicious to me. The car was parked in the same spot for few nights and just one night before my flight the incident happend. Coincidence? - maybe...
I am not going to jump into conclusions or judge anyone (since I don't have any proof). Just please be aware since they don't have great reviews in Mexico.
People please don’t trust this company i did my reservation and i pay for over the internet the email i recieve says bring you driver lisence credit card and 2 ids o passport i was having all that but the store on toluca airport told me no i mist to have the usa pasport i have to rent car to hertz whit no problem because i was having all i need to now im very afraid tha nayely hernandez and rafael he dont want to give me he last name ?? use my personal information to do something bad she is no a good person im very afraid about and mexico no respect the laws so people be very careful whit this company and now they give me a very hard time to give me my money back the have emails and phone numbers but they no awnser im glad i pay whit pay pal i hope i can do some thing whit pay pal to see if i can get my money back
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY IN MEXICO! they use the scam raised by Martin Lewis, in that they claim any insurance prepaid isn’t valid in Mexico and you have to take out theirs. They then charge your credit card £1,000 without telling you. Avoid these fraudsters at all costs. Also the U.K. company are not interested in helping or providing any service.
Scam! Had car insurance that covered rental, but required insurance, which made price roughly 300 percent higher. Thieves basically.
If you rent from Europcar Mexico get ready to be scammed. I had booked in advance and pre-paid. Took the shuttle from Cancun Airport to the counter. The cost of the car was reasonable but the representative told me the mandatory insurance was going to be $880. I thought he was talking Pesos but it was USD. This was for an 8 day rental. So $110/day just for insurance. To top it off this wasn't even the best insurance. That would have been $1495 total. I had rented in Playa last year and car/insurance was about $40-45/day. That was what I had expected here. There was no mention of this mandatory cost when I had booked. Buyer beware! I will never use Europcar again. I also promise to share my experience with everyone I know. What a horrible business practice. Do your research on the insurance cost upfront.
After I got the QR code print a woman grabbed my ticket outside the door. She gave me a map and directions and then I realized I was in a timeshare pre-sale. OMG, I could not believe it. She hid my QR ticket under her map on a clipboard. She would not give it back so I had to start looking through the clipboard papers. I asked for my ticket multiple times.
Worse experience ever I paid in advance for everything when I got there they wanted me to leave a 10,0000 US deposit they never gave me my car since I refuse to pay the extra or leave a 10,000$ deposit Do not rent there avoid at any cost
We picked 2 days with collision protection for $56. Getting there they forces us to pay insurance when we have car insurance that covers international travel and collision protection. They said we could get a car without it! On the website they said they would charge $20 a day but out bill came out to $150!!! This hasn't been the 1dt time they do this. Since I paid for the collision protection ahead I thought it was going to be different! Boy was I wrong! Very deceitful and they should be ashamed of themselves!
This booking was made by my travel agent for Puerto Escondido on the coast in Oaxaca for 8 days and they assured me that my car hire excess insurance would mean I wouldn’t have to pay anything more.
When I arrived at Europcar at the airport the representative said my excess insurance was not real and I had to pay more than $40 per day for their extra insurance. After 30+ minutes of arguing - I was lucky my son could speak Spanish and was with me - they backed down.
They then refused, even though it was on the booking form, to accept an additional driver free of charge, gave me a car with a quarter full tank.
When I returned the car to Huatulco airport, the rep then said there was excessive sand on the back seat and required me to pay $44 (for something that could have been vacuumed off in 2minutes!). She then said that I wouldn’t receive my deposit (of more than $1200) for 24 hours…
I was lucky that I took my own photos of the car as I believe I would otherwise be charged for some of he scratches already there.
Not a good experience at all - not recommended!
When I return the car the clerk at the counter tried to charge me some fees (1000$ Mex) because there was a little bit of sand on the driver side carpet after 2 weeks rental in Mexico. When confronted he back down. seemed like a little organized scam around tourists. I would avoid or not accept this practice.
If I was able to write a review without giving ANY stars, that is what I would do. I rented on rentalcars.com and was absolutely misled regarding EVERYTHING.
#1. I never received a confirmation email with the car company’s name or my itinerary. I literally went off of memory of what the decal looked like when I booked my reservation (which was late then evening before I left.
2. I opted for the “extra” insurance, which is a total scam. At least I had record of that- which is how I could prove my reservation. Do not buy the insurance- it is a SCAM, it insures nothing but the fact you will be so angry once you realized you got screwed.
3. I also was met with the mandatory purchase of “their” company insurance. They “offered” me 3 different prices to pay- all of which were extortion. I can say this because I live in Arizona & I drive a $45,000 vehicle that I personally have A YEAR OF FULL COVERAGE MEXICAN INSURANCE WHERE I PAY ANNUALLY WHAT THIS CROOKED COMPANY WAS REQUESTING OF ME TO PAY FOR 7 DAYS!
4. If I agreed to take a tour they would “waive” the mandatory insurance fee. Ummm how is this even allowed.
5. My credit card that I booked with, which also covers insurance was denied because this was “special” insurance.
6. The car had less then half a tank of gas when given to me, had not been washed, dents on the hood, scratches on the sides. (I took video when they brought it to me)
We rented the car because I was traveling with my family with 2 kids and needed to be in multiple destinations for a wedding other wise I would have cancelled this reservation and had it refunded and just taken a cab.
Once on our way I realized the speedometer and the rpm dials didn’t work. The plastic covering that area was missing! I would be setting idle / like not driving and the speedometer would register at 100mph- or when I was actually on the highway it would say 10mph with 0rpms.
I informed the staff of this when the car was finally returned. I joke you not, I was in disbelief that it’s was literally laughed off. I will never ever rent from this company again. I will spread this to everyone I know.
This company should be shut down.
I had organized to book the car at 10.00 am in Merida. When I arrived to pick it up, I had to wait an hour and a half before I could see anyone. They then told me that the price I had been quoted was only possible if I paid a $5000 USD security deposit. I was then forced to pay three times the quoted amount for their dodgy insurance policy.
The car was not the one we ordered and arrived with less than half a tank of gas.
The whole experience felt like I had been ripped off to the point where I had to look up reviews to see if this company was in fact legitimate. There are plenty of rental car options in Merida, and I would recommend giving every other company a try before this one, as it is a total scam.
THEY ROBBED US FROM 200 USD before we even got the car.
We have never had a worse customer experience in our 31 years. I have rented at least 200 cars through my company and I have never experienced any service like this. What went wrong?
-> We were told we were not allowed to get our car keys even though the car was paid online.
We were told we couldn’t get our car keys before we paid for their full coverage insurance (180 USD per day). As we have already prepaid ~30 USD per day for the car and minimum required insurances, this is a 600% price increase out of the blue. Disclaimer: No other car rental company at Cancún airport wanted the same. As we arrived quite late, we, however, needed to buy one day of this super expensive insurance just to get to our hotel so we could return it the day after. For making this possible in the system, they would had to cut our 4 day rental down to 1. Just like that we lost 3 days of rental and had to pay more for it..
-> They told us that every other car company was trying to cheat us and they were the cheapest.
However, we went to Mex Rent and Hertz the day after and both were much cheaper, better contract conditions and the employees were actually friendly.
-> They time locked us telling us we only had 10 minutes to continue with the purchase or else our online payment would be lost.
We were not allowed to talk to any other car rental place when we arrived at 10 PM, because else “the system would lock us out and our booking would be lost”. We were the only customers at that time and they were at least 5 employees at that time. Because of the perceived time limit, we had to act fast and didn’t got the time to get an overview. I work in IT and I have never heard about such a system time lock. If this is real, Europcar needs to re-evaluate their IT provider. Probably, even I could help…
-> They lied about our return time cutting away 29% of our rental period.
We got our car by 10 PM and were told that we could just hand it in within 24 hours. The only catch was that the contract stated a return time at 3 PM - and we unfortunately investigated that too late. So we had to drive in rush hour taking door-to-door 5 hours of vacation time to return the car by 3 PM.
At the end of the day we spent additionally 120 dollars with Hertz to rent a car for the last three days that we lost through Europcar.
This entire end-to-end experience was with one employee named “Kenneth Alejandro”. Either this is the general customer service at Europcar Cancún or else they have hired a completely narcissist person without empathy and care for other customers and their economy.
Neither way, this is my last purchase with Europcar as long as “Kenneth” is still a part of demonising the company and their customers.
Horrible company. Complete bait and switch. They quote you a price online knowing that when you show up that they will force you to buy the mandatory insure required in Mexico. All 5 people renting cars at the same time as us had the exact same thing happen to them. Our rental car went from 97.00 to over 500.00. If they know certain insurance is required then quote the car with the insurance.
The people who work here know exactly what they are doing. We had all our paperwork printed out. Insurance and Chase insurance info printed out. They knew exactly where to point out what wasn’t covered in Mexico. It wasn’t their first time.
FYI your Chase Sapphire card insurance will not work as well.
Do not rent from these guys. Took over an hour to finalize the rental and over and hour to return and for the shuttle bus to show up.
Complete agreement with what others are saying. It's fair to call Europcar's insurance practices a bait and switch, scam, or egregious lie. Regardless of what their website says about you bringing your own third party insurance, if you think the "total price" you see on their website (or Kayak.com or wherever you're unlucky enough to encounter them) is really the total, you've got a real shock coming when you get to the rental counter.
From my home in the USA, I rented directly from the Europcar website for use in Loreto, Mexico. I declined insurance on the website, which said to bring a letter from my credit card company to prove coverage. I was presented with a total price, which I paid.
I then called Chase, my Visa card provider, and they sent me a personalized letter guaranteeing full coverage for rental cars in Mexico. I gave the letter to the Europcar agent upon arrival in Loreto, and it made zero difference. I was told about mandatory "augmented insurance" options, the cheapest of which was about the same cost as the rental itself. Other agencies were out of cars, so I had to comply (or take cab$ for our long distance travel while here).
It's much like a bait and switch—advertise one price, and then upon arrival, there's another price that's about double. Oh, plus approximately USD$1,000 charge on my credit card as a deposit against possible damage. So, if I did get in an accident, they'd keep that and I'd lose another $1K as well! I'm guessing Europcar would have my credit card company pay some or all of the damage, plus they pocket this scammy "augmented insurance," plus keep my $1K "deposit." Even if you don't get in a wreck, this is one damned EXPENSIVE rental. And if you do get in a wreck, kiss an extra $1K goodbye.
What a wonderful way for this scammy company to profit with the bait and switch, and profit even more if there's an accident! And, of course, the cars only get fixed if they're unusable. Ours had large dents that someone surely paid dearly for, and are going unfixed.
To Europcar employees: How do you teach your kids about integrity, when you have none yourselves? Or are you a crime-family operation that's proud to have your kids follow the modeling you're providing, to become liars, cheaters, and fraudsters themselves?
Don't rent from these scammers! Europcar MX cheated us badly, and there seems no easy way to recover the $355 additional charges they forced on us!
At 8:30am on Jan 17 2023 we wanted to pickup our Europcar rental CTW*******. I spent over an hour arguing with a Europcar employee and finally the station manager, as they insisted that I have to buy their own CDW insurance if I want the car. I showed them a letter from my Chase credit card company that I already have CDW/LDW, they didn't care. They gave me the choice to leave without the rental (cancellation charges would occur), or pay over $693 for their own CDW. After arguing with the highest manager in the office, I had to pay for their CDW, which he discounted to $355.08. This still more than doubled our cost of the small and pretty dirty rental car!
It's not the fault of their employees, but a corrupt company that forces their people to sell add-ons. They ignore their own T&Cs, which I had printed out and read out loud to them. They force unnecessary insurance on you at pick-up. At rental return, they try to charge for pre-existing damages to the car. So, if you really must rent from this absolutely dishonest company, make sure you take excellent pictures of the inside and outside of the car. I saw other renters going through the same ordeal, so this seems their standard practice. My recommendation is to stay away from these scammers, you'll pay dearly if you don't. Cheaters!
Tip for consumers:
Go look elsewhere for a reputable car rental company.
BTW, I contacted them under mx_customersupport at europcar, but they didn't bother to respond.
1) I highly do NOT recommend this company. BEWARE!!! They rip you off with insurance. As I told the clerk, they are not a car rental company, but an insurance agency!! My credit card covers my rental insurance (Chubb Insurance) and the clerk still refused to rent me the car without THEIR insurance.
2) At first the clerk gave me the option of three levels of insurance, $33 per day, $46 per day or $$108 per day. Since my credit card (Chubb Insurance) was covering the car, I selected the $33. The clerk then tells me that they can’t rent me the car with that insurance or the $46 per day either. I was forced to take the $108 or was told to go else where to rent a car.
I was extorted…. But then again, that’s Mexico for you.
If I could write minus zero stars, I would.
Worst customer service ever! The worse manager ever.
They make you pay for things that you don’t need.
Horrible!!! Don’t recommend it
Áreli Bustamante is the name of the manager and she is not a good manager.
