Scam, scam , scammers

I booked and paid to rent a car in Mexico for 12 days through Rentalcars.com. I paid to rent the car and for the best insurance suggested. Once I got to Mexico I had to wait 2 and a half hours at Eurocar Rental to get any service. It was 7:30 pm and only had 2 staff members on. While I was waiting to be called up I noticed every single person got very upset. Once it was my turn I realized why the other customers were upset. I was told that the insurance I pre-paid for was not valid and in order for me to rent the car I needed to have full insurance at a cost of $1827 USD plus a $600 USD deposit. At that point I was so tired, fed up and stranded there if I did not pay the price. I had know other choice. I ended up paying $2472 USD EXTRA and by the time I got the car it was around 11 pm. Then the car they gave me only had half a tank of gas. Overall, I was mislead and advertised falsely. This is a warning to all who read this Do not go there! Read the reviews. Fight for your rights! Huge scam!

What can we as ripped off people do…

What can we as ripped off people do about this ongoing scam? TripAdvisor has reports from people about the Europcar scam for the last 13 years with same rating as trustpilot: 1/5. In response to reviews on both trust pilot and tripadvisor is an "invitation" to write to Europcar about your experience. My issue is we need to notify the 3rd party rental companies such as Expedia, Booking, etc. In my case I rented from Alaska Airlines because I trust them and when the reviews were about insurance ripoff I purchased insurance. But like everyone else, once at the airport I was told the insurance was not valid. In my case I was charge $545 for 7 days of insurance on top of the $365 I paid Alaska for the rental and insurance!

The biggest scam I've ever seen

The biggest scam I've ever seen. I reserved online for 130$ Canadian for 8 days. Arrived in Cancun, they charged me 480$ USD (about 800$Canadian) for the car. They refused to recognised my credit card insurance and surcharged my insurance. Last time of my life I rent with this scammy car company.

Big scam!!

Ordered a car with manual gear online. When we arrived at Europcar the car we ordered seemed to be with automatic gear. The only thing we could do was to take an "upgrade" to a bigger model. We had to pay an upgrade of 80 euro's(!!) for the smallest available car with manual gear. The car we received was a Chevrolet Beat, barely a bigger car than the one we ordered. The car was old and shouldn't have been rented out anymore. A danger on the road. At first they even didnt want to go around the car with us saying there wouldn't be any problem. After a discussion they finally agreed checking the car before letting it depart.

Friends of us rented at Hertz (very close to Europcar) and did not have any problems, nor did they get ripped off. First and last time Europcar La Paz!

Ive put a review on Google and they asked me to contact them by mail. I never got a reply on over 10 emails sent.

Scam!

Know what to expect!

First, one MUST consider that renting a car in Mexico is a different experience than renting elsewhere, mainly because Third Party Insurance is compulsory by Mexican law when you rent a car in Mexico. That insurance MUST be purchased as part of your contract and it is expensive, costing usually as much as the rental cost itself! In addition, there is usually a large temporary deposit on the car against damage, refunded upon return. I think this policy needs to be overhauled by the powers in Mexico, but that's a whole other story.
Otherwise I found that the employees at Europcar at Zihua airport were courteous and helpful. We went over together all the previous dents and dings on the car so I wouldn't be charged for previous damage. The agency is convenient to the terminal. I had a positive experience because I knew what to expect!

This company seems a total sham

This company seems a total sham. I reserved a car online in Cabo San Lucas, paid for it and received confirmation. When I went to pick it up, the local agency requested an additional rate of $47 per day and a hold of $14,000 because the US credit card was insuring it! Refused to pay them.
Sent email to Europcar .They did not even bother to respond. So I disputed the original payment with the credit card company.
This company should lose its license, it just makes an awful name for Mexico

3 hours for a pick up and a rip off

It took 3 hours to get our reserved car. The system went down all the time and the staff weren't efficient at all. As always rental car staff members weren't trustworthy at all. During the process of getting the reserved car, the staff managed to charge the deposit twice on my credit card. Because of that I had to give my bank a phone call to expand my credit line. Then in the next step I had to buy the mandatory Mexican insurance. So far so good. But they only gave me the option of Plus or Middle. Never let me choose the Basic option. The Plus option would have cost me 3.000€ and the Middle option 1.800€ for my 18 day rental. After talking to the staff why it is so expensive, after all the car rental was only 750€. Then he pushed a button and all of a sutton the Middle option only cost 1.200€. Why? That is just a tactic to rip of customers, and bleed them dry, because they know we don't have any other possibility. Pretty bad customer experience in my opinion.

My Nightmare with Europcar

My rental experience with Europcar Mexico was an absolute disappointment. Like others on this thread, I have rented multiple cars in various countries as I travel for work- but I have never experienced such poor service in the building, or customer service after returning the car. When I arrived I and went directly to Europcar to pick up my car (paid for it in advance) - at the Cancun airport. The fine print said that you can decline CDW if you sign a waiver AND you provide a letter from your credit card saying you already have CDW. I called my credit card company AND Europcar ahead of time to make sure my card would cover my rental in Cancun (requested a letter from my credit card company) and I was assured by both parties that my insurance is covered. I brought the letter and Europcar told me it was not good enough, that my credit card does not cover the rental and I need to buy their insurance. My car rental went from $543 (CAD) to $1874 (CAD). Plus a $700 (CAD) deposit. So this was not a great start.

The car worked great, I had no issues throughout the trip, and returning the rental was easy and fairly quick. Once they inspected the car I was informed I would get my $700 deposit back, as there was no damage on the car. Three days later my card showed they returned my deposit, only to then recharge me for my deposit. So, I then started the arduous process of getting in contact with customer service to resolve this issue. It had been 10 days, with no process. Today I decided I would continuously call back until it is resolved, I have been hung up on - or disconnected three times. I’m currently on hold, hoping to get in contact with someone and not get disconnected again. This has been the most frustrating process with a rental car company, I have never experienced such poor service.

Please, do not waste your time with this company. It has only been a headache.

Do not rent from Europcar Mexico

Do not rent from Europcar Mexico - I’ve been scammed twice in one month! 1) instead of holding my deposit of USD$1200 for 2 different rentals, that amount was actually put through as a charge on my Canadian dollar credit card! Nobody does this! When I returned the car a refund was put through but the difference in charge and refund for international currency meant I lost $95 for each rental! I have still to hear back from customer support. Also 2) beware if you cancel a booking. They won’t refund the charge but offer a credit for another rental IN MEXICO ONLY! I am a journalist and have rented cars all over the world for 45 years - including Europcar in other countries - and have never been exposed to such scams. Don’t rent from these people! Wish I had read these reviews before and I can’t believe that a European company of Europcar’s calibre would allow one of its franchises to drag its name down like this….

USD 2,000 unauthorized charge

Europcar México is either a scam or an absolute mess. Brought back my rental car and got assured that the deposit would be unblocked from my credit card but found out few days later that instead the CARD GOT CHARGED WITH USD 2,000 without any explanation. Europcar has not got back to me after several inquiries via email and on the telephone they cannot help either.

I recommended our family Europcar, BUT

I recommended our family Europcar! We were nervous before going to Mexico about rental of a car. Was it the same as in Europe? But we choose Europcar instead of one of many other options. Because Europcar is well known brand and according to my belief therefore a certain level of quality for our family. BUT, as a famous movie qoute sounds: They f... you at the drivein... And here it is not the drivein, but @Europcar Cancun Mexico.

- Selling insurance as FULL, but it is not
- Finding spots, damages etc. on the car as we return that we are not responsible for.
- Telling us that we can a avoid a large deposit by paying a higher price, but still withdrawing a deposit

Just a bad experience when starting a dream vacation...

Europcar Cancun Airport made me so sad

Europcar Cancun Airport made me so sad. What a horrible experience.

We rented a car from home and when we went to pick it up, they told us, that they couldn’t get a deposit from us, since we only had a Mastercard debit. Instead of the deposit, they offered us full insurance, if we paid USD 1400 instead of USD 850. We refused, and instead they acted to be kind and understandable, so we agreed on USD 1120. We fully understood, that we should have brought a Mastercard credit to Mexico, so we took the entire blame. Two days later the amount was gone from our bank account + USD 900 in a deposit. WHAT??? We sent them an e-mail on the e-mail they use on trustpilot, but we never heard from them.

When we came back to return the car, there was a stain on the car seat, and they told us, we had to pay USD 100 to remove it. I was very chocked about this, so I instantly took a wet tissue and removed the spot immediately. Now, they couldn’t accept this as well, cause now the car was wet. Apparently in the terms of conditions, you cannot return a wet car. Are you kidding me?!

Desperately I asked them, that since we had paid for full insurance, when we picked up the car, I assumed they could go through the insurance company (Santander) with this problem. To my even bigger surprise, they now informed me, that we didn’t have full cover. This is both fraud and illegal!

We are a couple traveling with two small children (1 year and 4 years) and I can’t believe that anyone would treat a family like ours this bad. We came in a good holiday spirit and they just ruined it for us.

Currently we are waiting to get our deposit back. Who knows if we will ever see the money again. Horrible company, and an experience I would never expect from Europcar, anywhere in the world! Such a disappointment.

I have rented a car via Rentcars.com…

I have rented a car via Rentcars.com from Cancun airport from the 27th of October to the 3rd of November 2022 with Europcar. The rental included only TPL and the voucher confirmed we could hire the car as is: "All items included in this reservation allow the pickup of the vehicle". However, when we arrived at Europcar desk, the agent told us we did not have enough insurance coverage and that CDW/THW was compulsory in order to hire the car. If we wanted to waive the CDW/THW coverage, we needed a third-party insurance which we did not have. The agent then proposed the Basic package (THW, CDW and TPL) of more than US 450 if we wanted to be able to pick up the car. However, this package includes TPL that we already paid for.

After long negotiations (more than an hour) the agent agreed to allow us to buy the CDW/THW separately. We therefore bought the CDW for USD 33.64 per day for 7 days (for a total of USD 235.48). When we arrived at our hotel, we realized the agent did not add the THW as it was discussed - we therefore had to go back to the agency in the morning and we therefore lost almost half a day because of this.

In the morning, the agent told us we could not buy LDW (which combines both CDW and THW and is cheaper) and we therefore had to buy separately again the THW for another USD 20.18 per day for 6 days (for a total of USD 121.08).

The rental costed us therefore USD 356.56 instead of the original USD 88.00!!! The rental with Europcar has been challenging and we ended up paying way above what was agreed with their partner, Rentcars.com.

EuropCar does not answer emails and cannot be contacted by any means - this is basically just a scam! Stay away from it at all costs!

DO NOT USE THIS PLACE

The staff was not there during opening hours (just didn't show up for 1.5hours). To a force charged $60USD a day to get their car as a minimum for insurance when we already had insurance.

The owner is a crook - the staff told me I didn't need the insurance (as I had some) but are forced to charge people $60USD insurance of the owner / manager will give him a penalty.
