Total scam, avoid and run far from this company

Total scam, rented the car through Expedia, our flight was arriving in Cancun at night, so their front desk was closed and we had to wait for them to send a Shuttle, once in their location they told me that I had to paid $350 for the total reservation and a $13,000 deposit on my credit card or pay $450 with their insurance, I originally paid the reservation for $160 with Expedia, since it was already midnight and still had to drive to Tulum and I knew I was not going to get another car quick enough at that time, I agree to their $450 fee, to later found out that the car did not have but only 1 bar of gas, anyway we return the car at the airport at the end of our trip and they charge us $120 for sand clean up, when you are renting in a beach town, and they wanted to charge us for gas because we return it with the same 1 bar.

Avoid this rental car as fast as you can, they are just trying to milk the tourist out of any penny.

Very bad experience

Very bad experience! Not recommended at all!
After 11 days they haven't released the card deposit yet. They added an extra fee without notification. A lot of hidden information in general as you don't see the contract until you have already paid and signed everything.
Really old and basic car in a really poor condition. Not very helpful employees either

Horrible customer service and random charges when you pick up your car

We paid in full online for our car rental and when we arrived to pick our car up there was a random 50% increase in price charge because we “declined insurance” even though we declined insurance initially when we booked online. Two days into our trip our car would not start and we called and were on hold for over an hour. Someone did not come out to change the battery until the end of the day and we lost an entire day of use. We have called and emailed numerous times for a refund for that day and no one will help us and they will not respond to our emails. This company is horrible and a scam!!!

They stole my belonings

Long story short, I forgot my hiking boots in the back of the car (my fault) and not 50 min later I call to tell them. The shoes were 'gone' and not found (aka stolen) by the cleaner. Which big company steals from their clients?!?!

I called them multiple times, sent them emails, contacted their live chat, and they just stop responding. It's probably normal at the Europcar Mexico (CDMX Aeropuerto) to steal stuff because they don't care at all.

Besides, they tell you the deposit will be back on your account within a week, but we're 3 weeks in and counting, and still don't have my 1200 dollar deposit back.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!

So many issues of dishonesty but to briefly summarize I had contracted to rent a car through Europcar. Upon arrival they insisted I buy CDW through them, despite me already having CDW, and CDW not listed as being required. This would have quadrupled the price of the car. When I walked out to the van and demanded a ride back to the airport they relented if I would agree to pay an extra $105, apparently as a penalty for wanting to stick to the deal I for which I had contracted. Used the car for two weeks. They came up with a phony claim that someone broke into the vehicle and stole the spare tire from a hidden compartment under the trunk. Funny thing was I had items which were in the trunk for the entire time I used the car. None of my items were ever disturbed. They charged my card ~$870 for this phony claim. I'm still fighting this.

I would give them zero stars. Never use this company

There was no one to help us upon arrival, when someone finally came, they kept disappearing for long periods of time. We needed to be on the road soon so we wouldn't have to drive after dark. They tried to charge us more than $900 for insurance. our paid rental included liability and they claimed it did not. They wouldn't take our credit card for the CDW. After arguing with them they finally dropped the extra charge to $575!! out of frustration after being stuck there for 2 hrs. we paid it. Our car was brought up by a young mechanic, who handed us the keys and opened the trunk, pointing at the spare and walked away. we could not find any one from the front desk to go over the car with us, they just disappeared. Upon arriving at our lodging we checked the tire pressure, as the car wasn't driving well. One tire had 14 lbs of pressure and the other three had 24 lbs of pressure. The spare, upon closer inspection, would not hold air as there was a hole in the tire that had been marked with yellow paint, but not repaired. We could not do any traveling outside of town as we had no spare and the tires were also nearly bald. The gas tank was NOT full when we got the car. We have photos of all of these things for proof. I have never had an experience like this before when renting a car. I would encourage everyone to steer clear of these people. The whole situation was very stressful and ruined our vacation!

They should be called euroscam

I would give 0 stars if I could. This company's business model is to scam their customers. Hopefully future costumers will read the reviews and make these scammers go out of business. When I went to pick my car, most customers were arguing with the agents. When it was my turn I understood why. I booked and paid prepaid my car online, I didn't take any insurance since my credit card covers damages and theft and my home insurance covers my liability. When I refused to take their US$750 extra insurance, they asked me for proof that I was covered in Mexico, which I provided (not my first time renting in Mexico). Then when the agent had no more arguments he said that I must pay an extra VLF, vehicle license fee charge for US$266, or leave the car and lose what I had already prepaid. In all my years renting cars, this is the first time I had to pay this charge, plus trying to get a decent price on the same day once you are at the airport is impossible. So with no other option I had to pay or leave with no car and lose what I had already paid. I hope you can learn from my ordeal and rent a car elsewhere or get ready to get extorted

**** FOR YOUR SAFETY DO NOT RENT WITH…

**** FOR YOUR SAFETY DO NOT RENT WITH THIS COMPANY ****

We had all our bags and went to pick up a rental car from this company. It was a Sunday at noon, we put all our bags and went from Carmen beach to Tulum. At one point we parked the car and when we got back there was no suitcase in the car anymore. From the security camera videos you can clearly see that another car stopped next to it, a woman got out and had a key, where she managed to open the car door and then open the trunk, the thieves went directly to our car and didn't try with no other, indicating that they knew which car they had to steal.
That is, we rented a car that someone else had the key to, and in addition they gave our location. With that they stole everything we had, passport, clothes, documents, credit card.

BE CAREFUL!!!!

¡¡¡¡TEN CUIDADO!!!!

I was ripped off at this place

I was ripped off at this place. Don't go here! A similar situation as the rest but slightly different. The guy outright lied and manipulated. Like the other stories, I booked the car online for three days and paid online for insurance. When I arrived to Europecar in San Jose Cabo, every customer in the office was arguing with the agents. When it was my turn and they tried to tell me I needed to pay much more then what I prepaid online, I was advised by text by my Mexican friend to cancel. So I told the agent to cancel my reservation.
The agent then told me that he could rent me the car I had booked for $100 total for the three days I had booked. I had booked the car for $75 online so it wasn't that much more. He said this quietly to me and explained he was giving me a break just to make it easy for me and help me get out of there quickly. He showed me a piece of paper where he had written $100 total on it. Even though it was more than I had originally agreed to for the three days, I liked the idea of getting out of there quickly so I agreed. However, when I saw my credit card, I saw that he charged me $100 in addition to the $75 that I had already paid online!!! There is absolutely no way I would have agreed to this if he didn't lie and manipulate. I was ready to cancel the car and walk away. I had other options!
Updated 5/24/22 I wrote to the email listed below in their comment and it has been three weeks with no reply. If I receive a reply or if they correct their mistake, I will update the review.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I rented a car via Expedia with Europcar & purchased the insurance that Expedia offers. Upon arrival I was forced to purchase an additional insurance plan directly though Europcar or they wouldn’t allow me to take the car off the lot because allegedly the insurance that Expedia offers doesn’t cover the vehicle in Mexico. Mind you I have a one year old & felt pressured to pay a ridiculous amount for insurance which by the way doesn’t cover damage. Over the course of 3 days, the key wouldn’t unlock the door & they tried blaming me of forcing the lock. I waited for 3 hours for help to arrive while my babies food sat in the hot sun. Upon speaking to a supervisor America she agreed to waive the fees that they wanted to charge me due to their own vehicle malfunction as long as I kept the same car (even though the car wouldn’t lock at that point). The day we were to return the vehicle we noticed that it had been hit in the hotel parking lot. Long story short they made us pay 10% of the entire value of the car. The insurance they forced me to get didn’t cover anything, even when America said we wouldn’t be charged for the vehicle malfunction. Ulises Mauricio Perez made sure to charge us for the malfunction on top of the damage from the hit and run making sure that the value of the damage exceeded the deductible so we would have to pay 10% of the value of the car. He was absolutely unreasonable, refused to send us pictures or allow us to see the value of what was quoted insisting that it would be emailed to me, but the email never came. Since europcar already had my credit card on file he proceeded to charge a ridiculous amount to my credit card which he told me Expedias insurance would reimburse me. The same insurance told me would not cover me. Absolutely the worst experience ever. The insurance is a total scam. The employees have no people skills and show no empathy.
I will never do business with this company again & o highly encourage you to take your business elsewhere.

This review is for Europcar Downtown…

This review is for Europcar Downtown but it probably is accurate for all locations. There are ripoffs at every turn. Booked the car in advance with a Guaranteed rate only to be charged an additional amount equivalent to 50% of the rental cost for some mysterious penalty for not accepting their insurance. We returned to Merida a few days later and I asked if I could park in their space while we shopped and was told that they needed to charge us ....unbelievable. Oh but it gets better. On returning the car after we filled it the gauge showed 7/8th of tank. Apparently the service station didn't completely fill it. I was aggravated with the station. I said that I would pay for the 1/8th tank....wait for it...$31.50 . After arguing for 10 minutes in which they claimed there was nothing they could do. I clearly stated that I would dispute the charge and would never pay. Finally they said I could take the car and completely fill it....cost $3.00. BTW after filling, the tank did not register the extra fuel...did they alter the gauge. I would have been charged if I didn't have a receipt that was time stamped. This location is filled with thieves, liars, and generally a bunch of crooks. Please under no circumstances should you rent here. There are many other places in the area who may also be crooks but it is hard to believe they would be as bad.. you have been warned.

The worst experience

The worst experience. I paid everything on line. And when I got to the airport the lady was rude, she wanted to charge in my credit card almost $500 more dollars, she didn’t want to accept the insurance. I refuse to pay so She kick me out literally!!!
The service was the worst. The airport is out town and I had the last flight we were almost alone there. She refuse to give me my documentation I was worry for my safe, I couldn’t call the company and I focus to find a way to get town.
I didn’t got my full refund and also the claim service the worst!!!
Ever use this!!!

EUROPECAR CANCUN Airport flee!👎

EUROPECAR CANCUN AIRPORT :
We ' ve been completely appalled by the lack of seriousness and honesty of EUROPECAR CANCUN AIRPORT car rental company who repeatedly tried to rip us off and terribly lacked seriousness leaving us more than 5 hours on the roadside without assistance consequently to a car breakdown linked to a faulty battery. As a result we spent 72€ on calls and a lost whole day !
Moreover , upon arrival and during the return of the vehicle, the sales representatives tried to rip us off!
Arrived two and a half hours late in Cancun because of a delay from our airline, the salesman told us that our car had been given to other people in spite of the fact we had reserved and paid for it ! Consequently we had to take another car more expensive of course!!! After a categorical refusal from us , a vehicle was lent to us for the night and we had to change it for a smaller one the following day .... consequently we lost a day ..... and on the way back we had supposedly returned the car with less gasoline which was wrong ! Luckily we had taken a photo of the car meter before we left to show our honesty and the proof of their lie!!!
All this to say that all these practices are outrageous and unacceptable!
This car rental deserves all the negative opinions that can be read on the web and ours will only make their situation worse!

I've been renting for years with europcar, I don't remember any bad situation. I only have comments about the club card and the point system, it is true you get a 20% discount on the web however I was unable to claim the free extra driver insurance on site at Playa del Carmen which got denied by the guy in charge. On web site, I'm currently unable to use the points I got accumulated, the quote says they have been applied but you end up getting charged the full amount after you place your CC details.

Professional Scam..

Professional Scam... never again!

booked directly over their page a car with the information that every necessary insurance is included.

Also in confirmation mail the following "important announcement

Having booked from our official website you already have all the necessary insurance to rent a car, however, at the counter, our staff can suggest additional insurance and services that could improve your rental experience. All these extras that our staff offers are optional and not mandatory, so the delivery of the vehicle will not be conditioned by acquiring these extras, as they will always be your decision to acquire them or not. "

but at the counter there was no way to get a car without an extra insurance...first they asked for 1500USD after discussion the manager offered 1000USD - nobody cared about the statement in the mail - also the contact to the main support was no help at all.. "Hello my name is José inthis case the reserva does no include insurance for that reason is the extra charge"

comared to the other experiences here it seems like a system... unfortunaly looked to late to trustpilot... next time I will check before reservation.

paid reservation car rental but got refuse

I had a paid reservation car rental via gotrentalcars with europcar mexico in playa del carmen. When I try to get the car, they refuse to provide me the car, because I did not go for their insurance, and they refuse to give me the car. These are the employees at the time: A"lejandro Pierna Cisneros,Luis Rabelo
Francisco Javier Rincon Gopar", I went to the office, who are not willing to give the service, I paid for. They also push me out of the office, because a line was building up with other tourists, so they did not see worth to deal with me . I left without to receive the car I paid for, and have to deal to complain via the intermediate agency. This is a disgraceful service and company for this practice and who try to rip tourists abroad in a vulnerable situation. I wish Profeco or other Business goverment control agency are investigating this company. These are the persons, who treat me badly and disgraceful:
Alejandro Pierna Cisneros (Manager)
Luis Rabelo ( Sales person)
Francisco Javier Rincon Gopar (Sales person)

Europcar Mexico - NEVER RENT FROM THEM

Europcar Mexico, with it's cheating way of doing business, ruined my vacation in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Its a shame I didn't read these reviews before, I would have avoided the feeling of being robbed.
As already mentioned by many here, they basically lie to you and tell you that you cant get the car using your own insurance, like I have from American Express that I use anywhere else in the world. They even pretend to offer your three options, being the cheapest one more than USD 50 per day, for a car that doesn't cost even USD 13K. That basically doubled the cost of the rental, literally.
Since I had my family with me, waiting to get to the hotel after a long travel, I made the mistake of going through with this scam of theirs.
DO NOT RENT FROM THEM, choose anyone else that works with ethics and transparency.
