Serious Fraudulent Practice – Goldcar / Europcar Malta

I had one of the worst rental experiences with Goldcar / Europcar Malta.
I booked my car online with Super Relax Cover (Full Cover) insurance — which clearly removes all excess and covers all possible damage. However, when I received the final invoice, they had manipulated the insurance type to “Medium Protection” and illegally charged me €250 for an alleged scratch that I did not cause.
During vehicle return, one of their employees pressured me to sign a damage report, even saying I wouldn’t be allowed to leave unless I signed. I only wrote “N.O.” to show my disagreement. This was an extremely unprofessional and intimidating experience.
I have sent multiple complaints to Goldcar and Europcar customer service, but they never replied.
I have now escalated the case to the European Consumer Centre (ECC Malta) and will continue to pursue it further until it is resolved.
This appears to be a serious scam-like practice, manipulating insurance details after booking and charging customers unfairly.
I strongly advise anyone renting from Goldcar or Europcar Malta to double-check their contracts and insurance type before signing anything.

Bad experience

The woman at the rental counter was friendly — but only until she realized she couldn’t sell me any extra insurance or add-ons (I was already covered elsewhere). The car had no windshield washer fluid, and the tire pressure hadn’t been checked, so the car soon started warning about low pressure. When I called to ask about the issue, it took me an hour to reach a staff member who could speak English. In the end, I spent half a day finding a place to get it fixed.

Never use this company

This is the worst rental car experience ever.
Booked thru rentalcars.com and payed here, also for extra insurance . When I should pick up car, thete suddenly an extra change on for 209 Euro. This is a very non tranperant businessmodel. The listed price is not what you can expect. Go with the bigger and more transperant companies. This is a cheaper deal. This company uses disonest and nontransperat business models + a 2 hours waiting to get the car.

Dont do it
I rentet a car in malaga at the end of July. I received a speeding ticket which ( of course) I paid. Gold

car wanted a 20 % fee for paying,which I declined and payed the ticket myself.
BuT the have charged 40 euro from my mastercard,claiming its mandatory and also says so in my contract. This is not true. My contract does not say anything about a fee if I get a fine.
It is impossible to get in contact with anyone at Goldcar and the just took the money from my mastercard. Goldcar is not worth it at all. I payed ALL the extra insurance on top of this.
Rent from some of the other car companies at the airport. Goldcar is not worth it ...way to expensive into the apparently.

SCAMMERS AVOID AT ALL COST

If it was possible to put less than 1star it should have been.

SCAMMERS and horrible service.

In Zagreb they charge you €1800 in deposit and never say a word about keeping it for ONE MONTH.

Have rented cars allover the world, yet their support people claim ‘this is how every company does it’. Clearly uneducated and pathological liars. This is FIRST TIME EVER a rental company keeps money like this.

Delivering wrong car. You drive into somebodies backyard to do the business a good bit outside of Airport Area. SUPER SHADY sales people.

They get you by having lowest price and false claims for day and then when you arrive try to pile on extra extra extra charges. Real or not. They will try to do their best to steal from you. AVOID AT ALL COST.

Goldcar are scammers

Goldcar are scammers. During pick up they charged me for 210,72 EUR (plus 48 EUR for baby seat). They told me that the payment is for baby seat and a refundable deposit. After car return I have been refunded only 106 EUR. I called Goldcar and asked them why they did not refund the full deposit. They told me, that the rest of the sum was a payment for an insurance and taxes. During pick up there was no single word about any insurance or taxes. I did not receive any document from Goldcar mentioning an insurance or taxes. I will pursue a remedy until I achieve it. Don't give up!

DO NOT USE THEM CON COMPANY -AVOID using them in split!!!! - You guys are a joke!! We were not able to pick up the car as they were closed, we phoned first thing explained we came at the time we arranged and they were closed "sorry we gave your car to someone else" we booked it for 5 days!! - would not refund us. So well claw it back as thats effectively fraud through our english bank and youll be charged. HANFA will be receiving a full transcript and i will be taking further action, even the other local car hires said they just didnt want to give you the car, the woman at reception answered and kept saying she would call back everytime i called. This is a masive con. I dont care if i take legal action here or against your uk branch, both fall under same juristiction in corporate law.

Never never rent from GOLDCAR

Never never rent from GOLDCAR. We arrived the 16 of July 2023 at Bergamo airport at 10 o clock to pick up our rented car that was payed in advance ( through BOOKING.COM). GOLDCAR made up new things we had to show besides passport, drivers license and proff of paying in advance. The "assistent" couldnt even show what Danish id she meant. I of course have complained to Booking.com 4 times WITHOUT ANSWER. So I send my complaint to the Danish Pakkerejseankenævn. This is written in English though im Danish to warm as many as possible about Goldcar.

They charge you for damages that you have not done

I constantly rent cars in Barcelona with different companies, but the worst experience, by far, has been with Goldcar. They have charged me for damage to the vehicle that I didn't do. I sent them the video that I made when the vehicle was returned without damage, but they still took the money from my bank account. Thieves!!! Fortunately I have my own rental-car-insurance, and they told me that Goldcar usually does this to its customers. Do not trust this company at all.

Awful

Awful. Long wait times. Horrendously slow service. Please never book here.
Edit: They were supposed to give us a nice car, but they downgraded us because they didn’t have cars of that tier. Pretty sure their base case is to give the worse car. DONT BOOK!

ZERO stars or less!

ZERO stars - worst car rental experience EVER in Alicante Airport!!! Just don´t do it to yourself. Cheating and deception from one end to another - AFTER online prebooking. Was, among oter things, claimed for damage under the car!!!!!!

Ekstrem dårlig oplevelse! (GOLDCAR Palma de Mallorca) Havde booket hjemmefra via Travellink og betalte den dyre forsikring - Til trods blev jeg tvunget til at betale en meget dyr forsikring ved GOLDCAR skranken også uden forklaring, men dette var iflg. medarbejderen en nødvendighed.
Dertil ventede jeg 45 min i kø (bilen var forud booket), og da det blev min tur var kl. 23.05 - og da billeje åbenbart stiger efter kl. 23 skulle jeg endda betale ekstra for dette også. Jeg vil klart advare imod dette selskab! Snyd og bedrag!

CHEAT COMPANY! Extremely bad experience
Extremely bad experience! (GOLDCAR Palma de Mallorca) Had booked from home via Travellink and paid the expensive insurance - Despite this, I was forced to pay a very expensive insurance at the GOLDCAR counter also without explanation, but this was according to employees, a necessity.
I also waited 45 minutes in line (the car was pre-booked), and when it was my turn it was at 23.05 - and since car hire obviously increases after 23 I even had to pay extra for this too. I will definitely warn against this company! Cheat and deceive!

Automatic cancel because of no show

Today (July 2022) I arrived at the desk of the rental company to pick up my car (the booking was for 10am and we arrived at 9pm the same day because we hadn't even planned our flight when I got the car, so I got the car from the morning to be sure it would be available). The person at the Goldcar desk was very curt saying that since we had been late to pick up the car was gone, and that we were marked as no shows (I didn't know you had to arrive at the exact time, I thought we had the whole day to pick the car up). She then continues by saying that my only option was to talk to Rentalcars people, but that even if they reinstated the rental, it would take 2h to be updated on her system, so I was better off buying another rental directly from them.
I then tried calling Rentalcars and was greeted by someone who did not speak English and could not communicate effectively in this language or Spanish, the country I was in. They told me that my best option was to cancel and pay a cancellation fee, then go to a desk at the airport and rent a car myself. Considering there were many cars of the exact category available online at the time I think this treatment of me as a customer is completely appalling, especially as there was no notification to me that the booking was or would be cancelled unless I showed up by a certain time.

At this point my 3 kids were very tired form a day travelling so we decided to take a taxi to our holiday home.

We still need to rent a car so I will have to go back tomorrow to the airport and get another car directly from one of the rental companies (not Goldcar), but I am expected to pay a cancellation fee for the first car which I did not cancel I still want it if they will give it to me!

I would also urge you to have a better relationship with rental companies and present a more united front that tries to help customers instead of leaving them stranded based on technicalities!

Also, being 2h late in an airport is very common and you should at least communicate that you are cancelling, because my rental still appears confirmed online! This is especially offensive since Goldcar had cars available of the same category being sold online while I was being told to rebook an existing reservation to pick up a car.

Please be careful.

Please be careful.
If you ask for a second driver they will try to sell you extra insurance.
If you say "No thanks - I had insurance on the original booking," they will add it anyway and charge you for it. No luck when trying to resolve issue via original booking provider. :-(

Bandits Steer Clear

This company are bandits. I was forced to purchase £225.67 of insurance cover as she insisted I had none. I payed as I couldn't take a chance. Its hard enough inspecting these vehicles in a darkened car park as it is.
I have waited to return the car and have it signed off before complaining because I know I would be victimized by such unscrupulous people. Never again would I think of using this company and will tell Easy Jet all about it as I purchased through them. I will be travelling regularly now and all my money will go to another company. You Loose.

Goldcar asurance

Goldcar forced us to take their insurance even if I already had one included with my credit card because an employee of Goldcar told us « If you have an accident, we won’t give you an invoice of the dammage. So you won’t be able to send it to your insurance ».
On top of that, when I called the customer service, they hang up 3 times, after few minutes of conversations.
