We respectfully disagree with your characterisation of Gretel as a scam.

Identity verification and the collection of personal information such as address history and ID documents are necessary because we help people locate potentially valuable financial assets and must ensure users are who they claim to be. These checks also help protect against fraud and unauthorised access.

We are transparent about how personal data is used and processed. Gretel does not sell personal information to third parties. Any data sharing is strictly limited to providing the service, verifying identity, preventing fraud, and meeting legal and regulatory obligations.

Receiving no matches does not mean the service is not working. It simply means that no matching records were identified within the data currently shared by participating financial institutions. As many of the positive reviews on this page demonstrate, Gretel has helped thousands of people reconnect with lost pensions, investments and policies — in some cases uncovering assets they had no idea existed.

We're sorry Gretel wasn't able to find a match for you at this time, but that is very different from the service being a scam.

Thanks for your feedback. We understand why the timing might have raised concerns, but we categorically do not sell personal data or share email addresses for marketing purposes. If we did, we simply wouldn't be able to operate under the regulatory and data protection standards that apply to our service.

Unfortunately, spam emails are something many people experience, and a coincidence in timing can understandably create suspicion. However, we have no evidence that your email activity was connected to your Gretel registration.

We're also sorry that Gretel didn't identify any matches for you. A lack of results doesn't mean the service isn't working — it simply means no matching records were found within the data currently shared by our participating partners.

Additional response to edits:

We'd like to clarify how Gretel works. When you register, your details are not sent out to companies or third parties for matching. Instead, participating organisations securely provide their data to Gretel and all matching takes place within our own environment.

It's also important to note that email addresses are not used as a matching data point. Your email address is used only to create and manage your Gretel account and to communicate with you about the service.

We appreciate why the timing of the increase in unwanted emails has caused concern and genuinely, we are at a loss to understand why this has occurred.

On the first point, if no results were returned it simply means no matching records have been identified in the data currently shared with Gretel’s partner financial institutions. It doesn’t indicate missing or incorrect information and many users do receive matches as new providers join over time.

On data sharing, Gretel does NOT sell personal data to third parties. When you register for Gretel, we are transparent that we process personal data in order to provide the service. Under data protection law (including GDPR), this includes using your information to: verify your identity and help prevent fraud, search for potential matches with participating financial institutions, communicate with you, and support the delivery and improvement of the service. In some cases, we may also share relevant data with trusted third parties such as financial institutions, credit reference agencies, and fraud prevention agencies, specifically for identity verification and to help detect or prevent criminal activity. These activities are all carried out under strict legal bases such as contractual necessity, legal obligation, and legitimate interests, as set out in our Privacy Notice.

Any data use or sharing is strictly limited to providing the service, maintaining security, and meeting regulatory requirements.

The issue you experienced with address lookup isn’t because Gretel can’t recognise old addresses, but because we’ve recently seen extremely high demand following significant media coverage, which has unfortunately affected some address lookup functionality at busy times.

Gretel also relies on the information entered by users to match against records shared by participating financial institutions, so adding as much address history and detail as possible really does improve the chances of finding older pensions and policies. A National Insurance number alone is often not enough to identify historical accounts, particularly where provider records are incomplete or out of date.

We appreciate your patience while we continue expanding both our coverage and platform capacity, and we hope you’ll keep Gretel running in the background in case future matches are identified.

Not all pension companies are partnered with us yet, although our coverage continues to grow.

We’re sorry you weren’t able to complete registration. If you experienced a technical issue, our support team would have been happy to help resolve it.

To clarify, Gretel does not simply “pass your details on” to partner companies. We use the information provided to search against records shared securely by participating financial institutions, and matches are only returned where a connection can be identified.

While not every provider is partnered with Gretel yet, many users have successfully been reunited with lost pensions and other assets through the service, and our coverage continues to grow.

Thanks for your feedback. Gretel does not generate or store passwords created by your browser or device, so if Chrome saved a password incorrectly or auto-filled something unexpected, that can unfortunately cause login issues during verification.
