Sent same stuff several times, some orders not even sent out to us, customer service non existent - they haven’t replied to any of our emails. Lovely idea but very poorly executed. Avoid!

Unresponsive/ non-existent customer service…

Cancelled subscription was continued and I was charged.
Contacted their support email address, no response.
The recipient of this gift has now moved and doesn’t have access to the delivery address, contacted the support email again and received a response offering to change the delivery address. I responded immediately with new address only to find out now a month later the change was never made and orders have been delivered to the old address we can’t access.
Again, no response from customer support. I’m incredibly frustrated. Avoid avoid avoid.

Terrible customer service and fraudulent subscription service

Dear HMD books
I have repeatedly attempted to contact HMDbooks via email and social media regarding my account with not one response. This appears to be a systemic problem with HMDBooks. The online account system is failing to work, which is apparently the only way to cancel your subscription. It does not recognise any email address I put in despite signing up with my main email address. Therefore, I am unable to stop the payments leaving my account for the subscription that I want to cancel. I will be contacting my bank next to alert them about unauthorised payments being taken from account unless I get a reply today.
Yours sincerely
Lisa Morgans

Poor communication / customer services / late delivery

Poor communication / customer services. Ordered a subscription for a child's birthday. It stated once the order was placed the books would be sent out within the week but in actual fact it was sent out 4 weeks later. Not great as it was a birthday gift. I have emailed them twice to ask why but have been ignored twice.

Terribly slow customer service. Small issues like trying to return an order end up being much bigger if you cannot get through to an agent to resolve the problem.

Not worth it and a bit scammy

Positives: Nice packaging, nice teabag, books in fairly good condition, and customer service was relatively fast.
Negatives: The books themselves weren’t that great, and one was second in a series. The main issue was that I signed up for the ‘just pay shipping’ deal in March with the intention of cancelling after that month. I received my books, wasn’t enamoured with them, but for £3.00 it was fine.
I went to cancel, and realised they had signed me up for a 6 month subscription without mentioning this at any point in the purchasing process - this policy could only be found in their elusive terms of service, which are difficult to find on their site. I of course emailed them, and they said I could either stick with the 6 months or pay full price for my discount month to cancel. I wasn’t about to pay for 6 months, so I agreed to pay full price for month 1 (£15).
Now, HMD book club may have changed this specific policy now, but that doesn’t change the fact they cheated me out of £11, and suggests they are happy to use duplicitous methods to get more money. My advice, if you want second hand books? Go down your local charity shop, they’ll have a ton of books for 50p max, you’ll get to pick your books, you’ll be helping a charity and you won’t be risking a scam.

Subscription Trap

My partner signed up to HMD Bookclub from their recent Facebook advert, and like many others was shocked to see she had been signed up to a 6 month contract, which wasn't clearly indicated to her. Her attempt to invoke her statutory right to cancellation (within her legally allowed 14 day cooling off period), was rebuked, resulting in a report being send to Trading Standards, along with a copy of their terms and conditions - Whilst they DO state 6 month minimum term, they don't reference the 14 day cooling off period, which they need to.

A hint to others trapped in the same subscription trap is to use your rights, and make the most of your Cooling off Period under The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.

Hi Scott

Thank you for taking the time to place a review for our service. We'd like to take the opportunity to be completely transparent with our customers about what has happened and how we are now addressing it.

It's clear that we've got it wrong here. As part of our March ‘23 promotion, we introduced a commitment period to all new subscriptions which would essentially prevent a cancellation within a set period.

Based on the feedback we have received, it's clear to us that our customers were not fully aware of this when signing up. We of course accept full responsibility and we are proactively working to put this right.

As of this morning, we have cancelled all subscriptions that have requested to cancel, irrespective of their commitment period when signing up. We have also changed any other subscriptions that were subject to this commitment period to be able to be cancelled at any point, meaning the commitment period is null and void.

Going forward, all of our subscriptions will be able to be cancelled at any point. This was the model that we had always used previously and our customers always enjoyed the flexibility of being able to cancel/reactivate whenever suits them. Our terms of service will be updated to reflect this change today.

Again, thanks for bringing this to our attention and helping us to get this sorted.

Will

I got a 6 month subscription for a friend for her 40th. All the packages arrived on time and in great condition and after every shipping she would send me a photo of the books she had received with excitement. I loved the fact that these were second hand books and despite her being a voracious reader she hadn’t read any of the titles she was sent. Thank you. This is great service and I will definitely use again.

Scammy and dishonest

I subscribed to a free trial. Got a selection of random books selected by a monkey. One was the second part of a series (so now I'm expected to buy the first one somewhere else), for example. It was very underwhelming. But now apparently I am committed to 6 months? Nowhere in the subscription or check out process it was stated it was a 6 month commitment. I have written to customer service to cancel this immediately but I have a feeling I will need to report this to my bank.
