The actual place was fine

The actual place was fine, but there were a number of issues, doors and lights not working properly. There was nobody on the desk when our daughter arrived and she had wait outside in the cold for 30 minutes to be let in.

I typically do not leave reviews but…

I typically do not leave reviews but felt it was my duty to alert potential customers who are considering using Collectionist for their holiday rental. We travel a lot as a family and I would say that dealing with Collectionist was the most appalling experience we have had, certainly relative to their advertised brand and price.

After a long day of driving, we arrived at our rental in the south of France, excited to relax and enjoy the comforts we had been promised. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we were informed of a “temporary” electrical issue that left us without basic amenities like light, AC, a working fridge, working stove, WiFi.

Although we were told the issue would be resolved, the power went out multiple times over the next two days. Each outage required us to contact the property managers, but given there was no phone service, WiFi in the remote house, we were required to drive 30 minutes each way, multiple times, to contact the property managers to inform them that the electricity was not working. All the while I was also trying to care for our two small children.

After two difficult days with intermittent power, we decided we could no longer stay in the house without the basic necessity of electricity. Our seven day holiday by this point was ruined. Collectionist offered another property but no description of the hose and in a very different location - clearly to make make the claim they offered an alternative. I was surprised that something as basic as electricity was not checked before we arrived and why any provision couldn't be made in advance of our arrival.

Since we left our vacation early, they have refused to provide a full refund, despite the significant issues we faced. This was an appalling experience, and not what we expected from a company claiming to offer “luxury” rentals. Know that if you are using Collectionist and there is an issue with the property, Collectionist is only an intermediary, your money is with the lessor and there is really very little you can do to remedy a bad situation.

Collectionist claims to be a premier provider of high end holiday rentals. They certainly charge prices aligned with this claim. Our experience though was that Collectionist did nothing to inspect the property prior to our arrival and ultimately did very little to remedy the situation for our family.

DO NOT USE!! RUN IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION!!!!!

After a a whole day of driving in immense heat we arrived at the house only to discover that there was no electricity. Even after many visits from electricians the power would still go out every hour or so. We had also bought very expensive groceries which all went bad because the fridge was not working. On our trip we had a small baby who had to leave early as this conditions were far too dangerous from her because babies cannot regulate their body temperature. We were outraged that the house had not been checked properly and we were left without a basic need of electricity. We were promised a “luxury” house but were extremely disappointed with this experience.

Le Collectionist was fantastic, but the property description was misleading

Over all our experience with Le Collectionist was excellent. The staff were professional and prompt, and Giulia Fonte, our primary contact, was exceptional, to the point of helping us get an emergency prescription in Italy after we forgot a medication at home! So five stars for Le Collectionist. It was such a pleasure and relief to have help in finding a property that accommodates 24 people, arrange activities, order in wine, and generally make sure we had everything we needed.

The reason I did not give an overall five-star rating is because the description and amenities of the Villa Calo did not match the reality. The photos present it as a luxury, royalty-level villa, but in fact it is much closer to rustic than luxury. We loved it, and the staff were friendly and gracious, but several of the rooms smelled of sewage because of the antiquated plumbing, my room smelled musty, the furniture was "antique" in the sense of not being very functional (e.g. no handles on the dresser drawers, so I could only open them by using the key as a handle), and generally it was a bit old and run-down. Charming. Superb staff. But definitely not luxury.

Which we didn't need, but given our impression from the photos we were surprised by the reality.

We loved the chef, Francesca, but were disappointed that, despite the nice weather, we were not able to eat outside. That would have made a big difference to our enjoyment of the property.

It was also unfortunate not to be able to communicate with the chef prior to being there. Their menu is limited, not well suited to guests who are vegetarian or keeping kosher. It turned out, however, that Francesca was perfectly happy to make things that were not on the menu, so once we explained that we would like more green salad, for example, she had no problem providing it. And she was happy to make modifications to suit dietary needs.

We were also disappointed that we did not seem to be served produce from the property, which still had vegetables in the garden and lots of ripe oranges and clementines that were being harvested. I know it is not an agriturismo, but surely that would be a selling point for many guests to be able to eat the property's own products.

So overall we had a wonderful stay, and would certainly consider returning to Villa Calo, and definitely to using Le Collectionist, but I feel that the specific advertising for Villa Calo was inaccurate.

Incredible Property and Staff

Setting up the booking was very easy

Setting up the booking was very easy. The villa we stayed in was wonderful and their staff was great couldn’t speak more highly of the villa. The concierge service was absolutely horrible at Le Collectionist. The worst part however was I was overcharged $30,000 and I have yet to receive a return. Fortunately, I put the Villa on my Amex and so I have disputed the charge. They don’t seem to be able to do accounting very well.

Villa Gaïa 2024

It was our second trip to this villa with Le Collectionist. First of all: the property is hands down the nicest vacation home we have ever seen. Secondly: the level of responsiveness of the Le Collectionist was outstanding. They are super helpful and highly professional!
