I booked a sander hire through Mammoth Hire’s website, believing I was booking for the same day, 2 January 2026, for a weekend hire. I paid in full upfront by Mastercard (over £255). I received no clear confirmation of the delivery date.
When I didn’t receive confirmation that the sander would arrive on 2 January, I contacted the company via their Zendesk live chat to ask whether it was arriving that day and to request additional sanding discs. I received no reply. I also tried calling them and stayed on hold for 1 hour, 17 minutes, and 16 seconds (position 9 in the queue) without anyone answering before I was forced to hang up.
On 3 January 2026, believing the hire was meant for the previous weekend and had not happened, I emailed to request a refund. I received no response. On 8 January 2026, I contacted them again, asking either for my money back or to reschedule the hire for the following weekend. Again, no reply.
Only on 9 January 2026 did Mammoth Hire finally respond, stating that the booking had actually been made for that day and that weekend. When I immediately tried to cancel, they refused and said no refund would be given, despite the fact that I had contacted them multiple times before this date by email, Zendesk, and phone to cancel or get my money back.
They then forced the delivery for 9 January, leaving me with no realistic option, as they were threatening to keep the full payment and even charge more for any change. Even worse, the sander did not arrive at all, meaning I wasted an entire weekend waiting for equipment that never showed up.
As a result:
I lost a huge amount of time
I experienced significant stress and frustration
I am still out of pocket, with over £255 blocked
I never received the equipment I paid for
This is completely unacceptable. The company ignored timely cancellation requests, failed to communicate, refused a refund, forced a delivery date I did not want, and then didn’t even deliver the sander. This feels unfair and contrary to basic consumer protection principles for online purchases.
I would strongly advise others to avoid Mammoth Hire unless they want to risk losing their money and their time.

Could not supply the equipment ordered. Wasted a day waiting for it.

The machine didn't work & I found it impossible to contact you about it.

But after contract time tower was left at our house for greater than 5 days causing a great deal of inconvenience having to lock away for security reasons. Contacted hire company but got very oor response. Will not use again.

We did not receive the ladder even thou we paid priority delivery

I received a non-functional machine, and reaching out to someone for assistance was impossible, yet you've managed to organize a replacement at a time that is inconvenient for me.

The hiring process was efficient, and even though it was clear they were merely brokers passing orders to actual plant hire firms, as long as it functioned well, it didn't seem to matter. However, retrieving my £500 deposit has been a frustrating ordeal; two months after returning the equipment, I haven't received any refund. Despite receiving a statement of the amount due and cheerful replies from what seems to be an AI support email, the money hasn't come through despite numerous follow-ups and promises of soon. Not recommended.

The hiring process was seamless, even if I discovered they were simply intermediaries forwarding orders to actual plant hire companies. As long as it functions properly, it doesn't really matter. However, the struggle to retrieve my £500 deposit has been frustrating. It's been two months since the equipment was returned, and I haven't received any refund. Although I've received statements showing the amount due and cheerful responses from the support team, likely AI, there's still no money despite persistent follow-ups and endless promises of an imminent return.Steer clear.

Diabolical customer service and misleading product description. We ordered indoor scaffolding for stairs, obviously checking the size. The scaffolding delivered was too wide for normal size stairs and we had it picked up for return 30 minutes after arrival. Contacted customer service for refund and after two weeks received a reply showing a supposed little clip from their small print ( which I still haven't found) stating they cannot guarantee size of any products delivered. DO NOT HIRE from this firm.

The actual hire process went smoothly and although it became evident that these guys were just a sales agent passing your order on to 'real' plant hire companies, so long as it works, who cares, right?
Getting my £500 deposit back is an ongoing nightmare though, two months since the equipment was returned and I have yet to get a penny back. Had a statement of how much is owed, always a chirpy response from a (probably AI) support email, but money none despite lots of chasing and lots of promises of 'soon'.
Avoid.

very bad experience with this company, I tried to rent three times a ladder and there are always an error, the order never arrived on the agreed date or time, even after paying extra for urgent delivery(before 1 pm).
the third time it still didn't arrive, and they marked it as the costumer's fault. They wanted to charge extra.

This is the worst company ever; they're thieves. I wanted to rent a ladder. They canceled three times, and the last time they made me wait for three hours at the front door and never showed up. After all that waiting, they sent me a message saying they canceled because they couldn't find anyone home. My front door was open the whole time. They have no shame. And now they refuse to refund my money; they're scammers.

Took my order and payment and then on the day of delivery messaged to say they could fulfil the order leaving me with trades and tools onsite and no platform. No apology either and now waiting for a refund. I wish I had looked on TrustPilot before ordering. Fortunately South West Sales and Hire in Plymouth were incredible and sorted me with an alternative and even dropped it to site there and then!!!! That’s what you call customer service.

Made my order then read the reviews and thought I was in for a disaster. But I wasn't. My hire turned up on time and was collected without issue on the day my hire finished.
Yes Mammoth or National Toor Hire are middlemen - my order was actually fulfilled by Speedy - but it all worked out fine for me.

Couldn’t deliver item on requested and stated available dates, website needs to be linked to what is actually available not just take your money and then let you down. Time is the biggest cost for the customer in this scenario. Be upfront don’t over promise and under deliver

Booked and paid about £160 to hire a floor sander for the next day having struggled with HSS availability. Receipt sent with instructions stating delivery next day between 07:30 - 5:00 next day, large window but was expecting this to be narrowed down AM on the delivery day.
Stayed at home till 9:30, no update so rang. Promised a call back but phone forthcoming, three more calls later and still no further forward.
Finally at about 12 I managed to get hold of someone who could help. There was no availability booked for the sander and they were throng their “4000” depots to source one…
…Them told that unlikely to get one for the booked day but someone would call me to offer me an alternative day.
So, what’s the point in booking something for a specific day when they haven’t got availability? The only conclusion you can draw is that they are a middle man just taking your payment and then trying to fulfill it.’
A bit crap if you ask me. Refund requested.
Scam, been waiting all day for a tower no emails, no phone calls, nothing. No one to get hold of ridiculous

You said that you could get a tower to me that day and then at 2pm said that it would come in two days. I needed it that day, so cancelled the order and picked one up locally.
Disgusting company. Kelly was useless and had no idea what she was doing . My rental never turned up and then I had to chase to find out they had got the dates wrong as well as them not having drivers . Joke of a company. Useless . Avoid like the plague
I can only advise people to avoid this company communicating is none existent numerous phone numbers are out of service . Mammoth are a glorified middle man that don't actually hold any stock they simply take your order and then try and find another hire company that has your item ! I was told by mammoth that my item was with a local firm when I contacted the local firm they said they had never had any dealings with mammoth and that it sounded like fraud
