On-Line Fraud

I told them I did not want auto-renewal after the trial subscription. I was charged $119.99 when the trial sub expired. All of the ads say the sub can be cancelled at any point or time. I emailed them requesting a refund. They told me that I had not been charged. I wrote back telling them that I had been charged. They wrote that I had to gather documentation and send it to them. I telephoned and they told me that the subscription is nonrefundable. I threatened them with calling the Attorney General of my state; now they say they have refunded almost all of the $119.99 We shall see.

This is my story of how the staff in…

This is my story of how the staff in New Yorkers Brussels (Belgium) dupe foreign nationals. I am from india and made purchases in your Brussels store of 150 euro and 250 euro (Total 400). I was entitled to VAT refund. Tax free. However the store staff claims that they can't do VAT refund in the store despite my bill falling under their criteria of minimum 150 euro. They asked me to send an email for the same and said in 24 hours your VAT refund form will be emailed back to u. I sent many emails for vat refund. I didn't hear anything back for 2 days, when I went back to the store they realised they had given me the wrong email ID. After which I resent the emails. I received no reply yet, more than a week after the purchases. Finally after visiting their store 3 times they said they can't do anything about it. I wanted to record the staffs behaviour. However the main store manager whose pictures I have attached, assaulted me snatched and broke my phone. Pushed me. I also have a full video recording of the assault which my 13 year old daughter had to witness and was terrified. They threatened to call the police on me and in a foreign country I didn't want any hassles. But if any one checks their CCTV footage it will be all very very clear. If u ask me I can email pics and videos of the same.

Nightmare experience

Communication with customer service is absolutely horrible, the worst I have ever experienced in my whole life. First of all they didn't answer at all. After ten days I asked if I could expect any answer soon. Then the real nightmare began. It became a Kafkaesque kind of situation. Every time somebody else is answering, using at least 90% text modules knowing nothing of the previous e-mails' content even though I included the previous communication in every single message after the first one. So you have to start from scratch each time. As someone else described it in the reviews one gets the impression that those people only read the first sentence of each message whereby they never understand the request correctly. My impression is that I am not talking to human beings but rather to some malfunctioning artificial intelligence. It took me ten e-mails to achieve absolutely nothing. On the contrary everything got even worse and completely mixed up. Usually when I contact customer service of any other company and they cannot resolve the problem after two or three messages they transfer the matter to some higher level where it is solved efficiently. That was my experience so far. But now I got to know the nightmarish customer service of The New Yorker. In their automated acknowledgment of receipt it reads:

"We understand that your time is precious, so we appreciate you taking some of it to write to us."

I very much doubt that they understand that my time is precious. I feel like this was the biggest waste of time so far in my life. I considered The New Yorker to be a reputable magazine. But after this experience I doubt that very much.

Sorry to vent, but I have given up on receiving print edition

I have been a subscriber of The New Yorker since the 1980's but since 2023 the service has fallen apart. I have phoned every 3 or 4 weeks, I have a long case history in which the representative always makes promises and I receive nothing. Some subscribers just shrug their shoulders and say "oh well I changed to digital" but I have finally called and cancelled everything and requested a total refund. They are quick on the auto-renew, but the service is non-existent. Sorry to vent, but I must! Sallie Erichson

I wish I could give this ZERO stars for…

I wish I could give this ZERO stars for customer service and incredibly disingenuous marketing methods. I paid for a special $3 per month 12 week trial which resulted in a yearly charge for over $100! The order confirmation specifically said there would be a notification email right before the end of the term as the 'rates may change'. First of all, what?? I fully planned to cancel but thought I'd wait for the notification as it's almost impossible to find the link or information to actually cancel! Never received the notification email , was charged for a full year and then was told by customer services through a badly written, copy and pasted response there was no refund even though I contacted them the minute I was charged! So I'm supposed to live up to my end of the contract but they don't have to. Never again.

The New Yorker cheats people into subscribing.

Just like the other comments, I thought The New Yorker was a high end, reputable publication. I don't recall ever signing up for it. I was investigating a charge through PayPal, that I finally traced to The New Yorker. Evidently I am told that I signed up for a trial subscription. Suddenly, I was charged for a year's subscription. I was told that it is company "policy" to hold me to subscription. If you need to cheat people to get readers you are worse that the National Enquirer. Horrible. (I apologize the The National Enquirer)

I had a similar problem like I have…

I had a similar problem like I have been reading, with The New Yorker Magazine subscription. I signed up for a free digital trial, cancelled before the time ended and still got charged. When I tried to dispute it. I could not even find a number or contact.
When I eventually got to speak to someone they told me they saw my cancellation but could not find my subscription??????? They charged my account over $100 !!!! That was crazy to me. So I called my bank to dispute it but couldn’t get a refund because THE NEW YORKER informed them they could not show when I cancelled my free trial. THIS IS A SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!! Never again will I ever read anything from them and will let everyone know not to subscribe to their magazine digital or not!!!!!!!!!!

Follow Up to Earlier Review 8/22/23: Isn't this FRAUD?

Follow Up to Earlier Review 8/22/23
I called The New Yorker telephone number for customer care and was told that they showed TWO (2) subscriptions made on 8/20 and 822/23--both for the same digital + print option! The representative indicated she could not cancel my subscription because it had to be done via PayPal. In my opinion, this company is committing fraud. Why in the world would a subscriber request two subscriptions delivered to the same mailing address and email? Something is rotten at The New Yorker magazine. Do not subscribe.

The Most Horrific Interface with the Customer

I have subscribed over my life time to hundreds of journals, magazines and newspapers. I signed up for the New Yorker and paid with PayPal. I entered only my information (my email, my home mailing address). Subscription confirmation was sent not to me but to my wife. That email had no other info such as account number despite over 48 hrs passing. Without an account number I could not log onto the New Yorker website despite paying for both digital & print subscriptions. Customer service was horrific, NOT terrific. The woman I spoke to repeatedly interrupted me. Her lack of comprehension was frustrating and irritating. I had to provide the PayPal transaction for her to find my subscription. This was the most low level experience I have ever had when subscribing to any magazine, newspaper or journal. If I do not receive the promised email from the New Yorker to me in the next few hours, I will cancel my subscription. I did not; see my follow-up review.

Scam!!! do not subscribe

I applied for a subscription that included a free tote bag that never came, so I guess this is a scam. I tried to get in touch with the support staff and they couldn't even find my subscription, although I paid for it, forwarded my correspondence to the customer service and never answered me back. Don't subscribe !

Frauded me £100 and still pushing subscriptions on me while I complain

I have in the past had many successful New Yorker subscriptions. This time, I wanted to try their digital content subscription for 12 weeks for a few pounds, but once ordered I couldn’t access it. I checked my NYer account and it said it there was no current subscription. I assumed the payment hadn’t gone through.A year later I’m being told that my subscription is about to renew. Turns out they opened another account in my name on another email address, and a year ago charged £100 to my credit card. I have send about 15 emails trying to get it rectified and the New Yorker staff are ignoring what I’m saying and trying to sell me another subscription ?!?!? Insert expletives of your choice

WORST customer service on Earth, EVER!!!

They told me they wouldn't auto-renew, then went ahead and charged me 2 days later. For the last month, I have had an email thread a mile long with customer services reps who have no idea what I'm asking for and no idea how to help me. I will absolutely NEVER subscribe to this overrated magazine again because clearly they don't care at all about their customers! Don't try the free trial - you'll end up getting charged $120 you'll never get back!!

The worst service ever

The worst service ever and a stone age website. I have been a subscriber for decades; since the switch to digital, twice a year every year I have to go through the same routine: I stop receiving the magazine for reasons unknown; I try several times to log in to my account; I see that my "auto-renewal" did not renew, even though my bank account has been charged; I have to call the very unfriendly customer service who grudgingly promise to renew the delivery a month from the fate of the call.

Never recieved my refund

They renewed my subscription without sending the e-mail that they claim they send alerting one to the fact that the subscription is about to be renewed. I checked all my e-mail folders and no such e-mail was sent. They withdrew money for the subscription which was how I learned that the subscription had been renewed.
I write customer service and ask for them to refund me the money as I do no longer want their magazine.
They then claimed that an attempt was made to refund the money but the bank didnt accept the transaction. So now they claim that a refund check was sent, they then say that the check might take up to 4 weeks to arrive. Four weeks pass and still no check.
They then say that they will contact the appropriate department so the check might be traced and if necessary be re-issued.
I never recieve an update so I contact them for the 5th time.
They then say that it can take up to 6 weeks for it to arrive.
Six weeks pass and nothing.
I contact them again and get the same answer as before that they will contact the appropriate department.
They now say a refund check was issued on the 15th of august and that it can take 6 to 8 weeks for it to arrive.
The delivery time increases everytime I contact them. Feels like stalling tacticts to me used by scammers.
This is the worst customer service I have ever had to deal with.
It honestly feels more like a scam company than a magazine.
Probably wont get my money back.
