Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 3,820 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people expressed dissatisfaction with payment processing, citing issues with funds being held, constant verification requests, and delays in transfers to bank accounts. Customers frequently reported poor customer service, describing it as unhelpful, difficult to reach, and often leading to unresolved issues or blocked accounts. The service itself was often criticized for not protecting buyers and failing to provide refunds for misrepresented or undelivered products. Refund processes were a major source of frustration, with many denied refunds even in clear cases of product issues, and some accounts being blocked with funds held for extended periods. Conversely, a small portion of people felt that the service was handy for online payments and international transfers, and some even praised specific customer service interactions for resolving problems.

Unauthorized payment subscription

I want to warn others about my recent experience with PayPal. I was charged €311.75 for a yearly subscription I never agreed to. There was no opt‑in, no checkbox, no confirmation screen, and no renewal notice. PayPal refused to look at the legal side of the case and only checked whether the payment came from my device, not whether I gave consent.

This is not in line with EU consumer law or PSD2 requirements. After this experience, I closed my PayPal account and will not use it again.

If you rely on PayPal for protection, be careful their dispute system does not protect consumers in unauthorized subscription cases.

Their dispute system is also fully automated. When I talked to the agent she was convincing me I pushed the button. I went through the flow one more time and there was no button. Pay pal knows very well what they are doing.

Their executive office send me to their general terms and conditions and to the Luxemburg office, the problem-no contact details.

I became the client in 2011 and I used pay pal for many years after Domestica payment I deleted the account. I am scared that any unauthorized transaction will be debited from my account and pay pal will find every possible excuse not to refund.

"Protection" policy is a joke

"Protection" policy is a joke – do not trust them
Do not fall for PayPal's claims of buyer or seller protection. I filed a clear-cut dispute with overwhelming evidence, and they closed the case against me anyway. Their review process feels completely automated, unfair, and lazy. They do not actually look at the proof you provide; they just issue a generic decision and close the door on any appeals. They do not protect their users when things go wrong. Save yourself the headache and use a different payment method that actually backs up its customers.

PayPal deactivated my accounts without reason

My webshop is 7 years old, sticks to all the rules and laws in the EU, and I have had this paypal account for 3 years now. There was never a problem and nothing has changed over this period. Chargebacks, refunds, everything went usually smoothly and customers always received what they ordered. But then suddenly after 3 years they had deactivated both of my business accounts for 2 webshops and sent me an email with the reason "infringement of copyright". They don't show any proof of infringement, request additional information, let me clarify or share details about the case. The accounts are just blocked and no further information can be provided. I have been using these accounts for 3 years now and suddenly without any proof, explanation or further details they deactivate both accounts. When I contact customer support all I receive is "No further information can be provided" and they end the chat. Meanwhile, several direct competitors have the same business activities and have been using Paypal without any issues for years. How unfair, unprofessional and ridiculous this whole situation is. Paypal doesn't even know the rules and laws that are applicable in my country, but they don't care. They don't even give me the option to provide any additional information or explain my side of the story. They will simply just hold the funds of almost 1.000 euro in the account now for the next 180 days!!! What an insane way of doing business and treating your customers/partners like this. After reading all the reviews here it seems that I'm not the only one that has this exact issue. Will be looking for another payment provider because the customer service, business itself and even the stock is not doing so well, and for a good reason.

Don't ever rely on PayPal's "Buyer…

Don't ever rely on PayPal's "Buyer Protection" to keep your money safe. I bought custom prescription medical lenses that arrived completely defective and dangerous to wear. The seller admitted fault by sneaking an unagreed partial $80 USD refund into my account, then demanded I pay international shipping and Chinese customs duties to return them.
Under Australian Consumer Law, buyers are not liable for the return freight of a major product failure. I complied with the return anyway and mailed them back to China via Australia Post at my own expense. Even after uploading the official Australia Post tracking receipt (Tracking: LK275474606AU) proving the items were gone, PayPal's brainless automated bot instantly closed the dispute in favor of the seller claiming it was "invalid proof" because it hasn't landed in China yet.
Their system completely ignores physical documentation and legal consumer guarantees. Absolute garbage service. If you have an actual issue, bypass PayPal entirely and go straight to your bank for a card chargeback. PayPal’s automated system is an absolute joke.

They blocked my account with no reason

They blocked my account with no reason. There's no support to solve the problems. I needed the money urgently and I couldn't do nothing, just wait for days until eventually it got unlocked. Once I could access again I tried to transfer my money out of PayPal as soon as possible. But whenever I try to make a transfer I get an error telling me to try again later. Try to avoid. The app doesn't work and there is no customer service

Paypal is a scam

Paypal is a scam! Bought an item of clothing off a website which was clearly a scam because i was delivered the wrong clothing. Escalated to paypal to have the seller refund me. Because of how long their processing times are (they give the seller 2 weeks to make a response and then days in between responses) that by the time they let me get a refund they said i had to return the item in a short time frame. Because of how long the process took from paypal i had already gone on vacation. I let them know ill be able to post the item back in 5 business days after the due date and they said they dont accept that. So even though they clearly saw i was scammed, because i went on vacation and missed the return by 5 business days i was no longer eligible for refund and return even though it was clear i was scammed and they had agreed. Absolute scam themselves. Will now try to contact credit card company instead. What a joke paypal.

PayPal's rules and regulations are Trash

PayPal's rules and regulations are terrible, and their customer service has been completely unhelpful.

My employer, Patrick Brai, reported me by falsely claiming that I did not perform the work I was paid for. That is simply not true. The money in question is salary that I worked hard to earn.

Despite providing my side of the story, PayPal seemed to take their side without properly considering the facts. It's extremely frustrating to be treated unfairly when all I want is to receive the payment I rightfully earned.

Because of this experience, I have lost trust in PayPal's services and, starting today, I will no longer be using their platform.

A payment service that is unable to fulfil its core task: payments. I’m astonished that it still has users, it’s probably because it doesn’t allow them to quit.

I would give negative stars for the customer service

I would give negative stars if I could. Called customer service due a dispute I filed on a seller who never shipped the items I ordered. Spoke with "Rose" who was very condescending, offered zero help and hung up on me. The amount that was credited back to me on my dispute was 1/4 of the total$ I paid for my items. Rose advised me that I had only requested that amount. I had clicked on each of the 4 items and gave the reason I was disputing each item, I am not sure how I could have entered a dollar amount when each item had a dollar amount assigned to it. I explained this to her a couple times but all she would say is that I need to contact my credit card company and open a dispute with them, "there is nothing I can help you with". Why do I use PayPal if I now need to open a dispute with my CC. I no longer see a reason to have a PayPal account and will be closing it down. I have used PayPal for many years. I have only had to dispute a purchase I did not receive on 1 other occassion several years ago and I had no issues, but this time has been a huge hassle and I have learned that PayPal has Zero customer service. Everything has gone to AI and people who are unwilling to help.

Horrible experience

Horrible experience.
After sending documents twice to prove that I'm a coach and work legally for an online platform, they still make fuss to liberate my money, and keep putting restrictions...also to mention this business pays me aroun 100 usd weekly, so we're not talking I should be a person of distrust in terms of the money I'm getting in my paypal. Customer service won't resolve properly. It's just a really problematic platform, not to mention the HIGH FEES the charge you for their shitty service.
