Deposit return issue

Deposits were initially sent to property link by each tenant separately. After leaving a student house I requested my deposit back. An administrator told me that the ‘lead tenant’ has to request the deposits back for each tenant in the property, and then the lead tenant has to distribute the deposits to each person (obviously for the ease of property link and not the tenants). Being that we each sent deposits separately, this didn’t sit right with me - nor were we told via the contract or by email that this is how they needed returning. I lied to the administrator and said I couldn’t get hold of the lead tenant, then after more back and forth I threatened to escalate it to small claims court. They then swiftly asked for my bank details.
