I have used their secondhand selling service several times. The process of assembling a deal list is straightforward and very easy to use. The response time is very fast and although the prices achieved are probably lower than those possible on eBay or FaceBook Market, the hassle-free experience makes it an attractive alternative. Highly recommended.

From the ease of browsing the website, purchasing stock items, pre-ordering yet-to-be-release items, handling and payment of selling items to them, and dealing with the odd issue, ‘Rails’ are a great company to deal with.
The staff are always friendly, courteous, and accommodating to your needs. I simply cannot fault them.
Just accept that, on very isolated occasions, things can go wrong with products produced by a manufacturer, which are not the fault of the retailer, so it’s a hassle for them to deal with things when product expectations may fall short.
I’ve only had once instance of having to return product due to faulty production, and it was resolved quickly and fuss free.

I ordered a Dean Goods locomotive 2308 from the brand Oxford Rail, and ordered it from the retailer Rails of Sheffield. It worked for roughly an hour, but then after a few minor derailments, it stopped functioning properly; the coupling rod was not attached to the crank pin properly, possibly binding up the mechanism because of it. Also, the wheels were dirty when I first got it, and there was no plastic cover to protect against cosmetic damage, which it should have had, and it had a scrape on the side of the tender stepladder, making me believe that it was not new and had been used and returned. There were several problems with it when it arrived. I tried to contact the retailer for a refund or replacement, and they said I would have to pay for shipping back with my own money, and they would only give me a credit card voucher for their website, rather than a prepaid shipping label. I went back and forth with them, and they would not offer any other compensation for shipping. They did not make it clear whether I would get all the shipping money back or just the cost to ship it to their facility. The shipping was roughly 18 pounds, and the train was $150, roughly after tariffs to the US and the shipping to the US. I am very skeptical about going any deeper financially into this purchase to potentially only receive store credit. I’m loath to spend 18 more pounds on top of my original purchase to merely have a possibility to get my money back on the engine and shipping with no guarantee of full restitution. It was very disappointing to have this happen, and all I want is for other people not to fall into the same trap that I was caught in by these people.

I recently sold a large collection of model railways to Rails of Sheffield and the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. They offered me a very fair price for the entire collection, and the communication throughout the process was clear, professional, and very reassuring.

One of the things that made the process especially easy was that they arranged to come and collect the collection themselves, which meant I didn’t have to deal with sending it via courier. This made the whole experience completely stress-free.

The driver who came to collect the items was extremely friendly and polite, which really added to the positive experience. It’s always nice to deal with people who are both professional and personable.

SHOCKING CUSTOMER SERVICE. 24 hours after ordering paying £4 postage - "Doubt your item would ship, we are too busy UNLESS you an additional £4.50 postage before 1PM".
Paid the £4.50 postage - 11AM and was told I would be receiving tracking - nothing. Tracking received Wednesday AM showing it won't be received until the following day.

Great prices and website let down a little by being slow to despatch. Pointless paying for next day delivery when taking 2 to 3 working days to despatch.
This has happened with all my deliveries; it is not an isolated case.
If you need your items quickly then look elsewhere.

I contacted Rails of Sheffield regarding selling my son's second hand engines. I gave all the relevant information and then was emailed to ask to send them,as they were interested. Have sent the engines now to Ben and have received payment promptly. What a great service.

I recently decided to change scale on my model railway from HO/OO to TT120 and saw that Rails of Sheffield were interested in buying pre-owned model railway stock.
